Rotary’s founder, Paul Harris, believed that serv-ing humanity is ―the most worthwhile thing a per-son can do,‖ RI President-elect John F. Germsaid, and that being a part of Rotary is a ―great op-

portunity‖ to make that happen.

Germ unveiled the 2016-17 presidentialtheme, Rotary Serving Humanity , to incoming dis-trict governors on 18 January at the International

Assembly in San Diego, California, USA.

―I believe everyone recognizes the opportunity toserve Rotary for what it truly is: not a small oppor-tunity, but a great one; an opportunity of a lifetimeto change the world for the better, forever through

Rotary’s service to humanity,‖ said Germ.

Rotary members around the globe are serving hu-manity by providing clean water to underdevel-oped communities, promoting peace in conflict ar-eas, and strengthening communities through basiceducation and literacy. But none more importantthan our work to eradicate polio worldwide, hesaid.

After a historic year in which transmission of the

wild poliovirus was stopped in Nigeria and all of Africa, Germ said we are closer than ever to end-ing polio.

―We are at a crossroads in Rotary,‖ he added. ―Weare looking ahead at a year that may one day beknown as the greatest year in Rotary’s history: theyear that sees the world’s last case of polio.‖

Last year’s milestones leave just two countries, Afghanistan and Pakistan, where the virus still cir-culates. Polio would be only the second humandisease ever to be eradicated.

When that moment arrives, it’s ―tremendously im-portant‖ that Rotary is ready for it, said Germ. ―Weneed to be sure that we are recognized for thatsuccess, and leverage that success into morepartnerships, greater growth, and even more am-bitious service in the decades to come.‖

Germ, a member of the Rotary Club of Chatta-

nooga, Tennessee, USA, encouraged attendeesto return to their clubs and communities and

spread the word about Rotary’s role in the fight foa polio-free world.

―People who want to do good will see that Rotaryis a place where they can change the world. EveRotary club needs to be ready to give them thatopportunity,‖ Germ said. Enhancing Rotary’s image isn’t the only way toboost membership. ―We need clubs that are flexible, so our service will be more attractive toyounger members, recent retirees, and working

people.‖

He added: ―We need more willing hands, morecaring hearts, and more bright minds to move ouwork forward.‖ —————————————-

The question we face almostfrom the time we are old enoughto talk is ―What do you want to

be when you grow up?‖

It’s a question most often put tous by our parents, teachers, andfriends. When we are young, weare content to keep our answerspretty vague or even whimsical.When I was 10, I wanted to be aCowboy Astronaut Zookeeper!!Sometimes I wish I was one, ifonly to see the look on the faceof Rotarians who ask me what

my vocation is.

The word ―vocation” gets bandied about quite a lot inRotary circles. When I saw the word for the first time insome dusty old Rotary manual, I thought to my-self “someone keeps misspelling vacation” !

Vocation really means “a calling,” a strong desire tospend your life doing a certain kind of work or occupa-tion.

Vacation and vocation don’t have to be that far apart if

you are doing what you love. Honestly, I think a lot ofpeople confuse the word vocation with what we actuallydo to earn a buck. But vocation really means ―a calling,‖a strong desire to spend your life doing a certain kind ofwork or occupation. In other words, spending your lifedoing what your mind and heart feel called to do.

When you’ve found your calling, you know it. You aredriven by a passion that fills your life with fulfillment andsatisfaction. And it’s that kind of passion that drives Ro-tary members to celebrate serving through their voca-tion.

Someone who has a gift for fing things and working with thhands might be passionate abobuilding. They might use th

vocation to build outdoor toilto improve hygiene in a thworld country with help from flow Rotary members and a grafrom the Rotary Foundation.

A person whose gifts are in etrepreneurship and who is pasionate about working at homight use their vocation to d

velop web projects to assist dabled people in their local co

munity.

Whatever your vocation or true calling is, Rotary chelp you grow and develop as a person, and reach yofull potential.

Your unique gifts and talents can be applied to Rotaservice. And in Rotary, you can find opportunities tallow you to exercise your talents and use your capabties to the fullest extent possible.

Ultimately, whatever your vocation or true calling is, R

tary can help you grow and develop as a person, areach your full potential. And that is something would all like to accomplish, isn’t it?

Obstetricians from England use their vocational skills to train medi-cal staff on emergency care for pregnant women and newborns aspart of a vocational training team to India in 2013 organized byDistricts 1120 and 3240.

This is the complete Dictionary of Occupational Titles (DOT) revised fourth edition, as supplieelectronically by the US Dept. of Labor. Under each of nearly 1,000 occupational categories tinclude specialized fields of engineering, medicine & health, law & jurisprudence, education,agriculture, social sciences, religion & theology, for examples, there are Professional, Technic

and Managerial types of work in each of those fields.

In a typical size Philippine organization, there would be about 100 or more specific job titles.

We have found the DOT to be an indispensable reference for our practice in the field of compensation management at the Makati-based managementconsulting firm where the undersigned used to be connected as a principal.

Although all vocations and occupations are viewed as “useful” in Rotary, in all private and non-private organizations including conceivably the RI, somejobs are worth more than others as reflected in the differing compensation brackets for job holders. As a general practice, jobs and positions are first evaated and ranked according to content (Importance to the organization, difficulty, work conditions), then priced considering job market trends. Actual com

In May 2013, four science teachers from thePhilippines were preparing to return home aftera visit to the United States as part of a voca-

tional training team (VTT). They’d spent 30 daysobserving classrooms, visiting science muse-ums, meeting with policymakers, and makingpresentations to Rotary clubs in Massachusettsand New Hampshire.

It was an emotional time for all of us, as we hadlearned much more than science instructionalstrategies. We had learned that, no matter whatcountry we hail from, we all want the best for ourstudents. We want them to succeed. And asteachers, we want to make a difference in their

lives.

As hosts, we were very proud of what we hadaccomplished. The teachers returned to theirschools in the Philippines and immediately made animpact. They won regional and national teaching com-petitions, they were promoted to master teacher, andthe performance level of their students improved signifi-cantly. They were making a difference.

I was in the Philippines last month and made a point toreconnect with the members of this vocational training

team. I was able to visit two schools and see the teach-ers implementing the hands-on techniques they hadlearned during their VTT experience. I saw young girlsconduct an experiment and then explain why theythought the results had happened. I watched studentswork collaboratively to complete assigned tasks. Stu-dents were excited and engaged in learning science. Ittook me back to our original conversations, but thistime, they were not abstract ideas or comments orthoughts.

Had the visit ended there, it would have been worth thetime and effort. However, Manny Sy Peng, the governorof District 3770, had arranged for an intercity meetingwhere we got to hear from the team members about lifeafter they returned home. They told us about the impactthe VTT had on them professionally and personally. Weheard the following:

“Thank you, (District Governor) Terri Kidder, youchanged the life of a simple teacher.”

“I came out of myself, I became more self -confident.The VTT journey has never ended.”

“My dream is to create a teacher resource center in myschool.”

“Julia, you told us to come back and make a differencin our schools and communities and we have.”

Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to these andother comments. How many times have I called on Rotarians to “make a difference?” These teachers took mwords to heart and did just that. I was bursting with

pride, not only as an educator but as a Rotarian, atwhat we had collectively accomplished.

The impact was truly what Rotary leaders had envi-sioned when they designed the new grant model. Wewere asked for long-term impact. Here it was, right infront of me.

Teacher and U.S. astronaut Christa McAuliffe said, ―Itouch the future, I teach.‖ This sentiment was evident the classrooms I visited and in the lives of the fourteachers who were members of this vocational traininteam.

New Zealand Rotary members are putting food on thetables of low-income families this holiday season byteaming up with the Salvation Army to collect and dis-tribute fresh produce from local growers.

Starting several years ago, the Rotary Club of Drury,Auckland, NewZealand, annu-ally contactsgrowers to setup a time in mid-December tocollect producefor distribution,and then coordi-nates with theSalvation Army.

The club linesup three largetrucks, each with a crew of three Rotary members, todrive to different regions to collect the produce, whichthe Salvation Army then distributes to families duringthe holidays.

This project is just one of many that Rotary membershave shared on Rotary Showcase. Four others of note:

Rotary members in Amman, Jordan, hold an an-nual Dinner in theDark, at which guestsexperience what it’slike to eat in com-plete darkness. Blindand visually-impairedvolunteers guide theguests, serve themeals, and dine withthem to discuss thechallenges they face.

All proceeds go tothe club’s community projects and raise awarenessof issues facing the visually impaired.

The Rotary Club of Makati Central, Metro Manila,Philippines, sup-ports a PediaFair twice a year,in July and De-cember, organ-ized by the De-partment of Re-habilitation at thePhilippine Gen-

eral Hospital, to raise awareness of the needs disabled children. The club also supplies art aeducational materials for the children to use durtheir weekly therapy to enhance their growth aemotional development.

First-person account from January 2016 issue of The Rotarian.

On Christmas Eve 1988, I picked up my son Steve at the air-port. He always kept himself in good shape, but he was soskinny it was really beyond the pale. I didn’t say anything, butChristmas morning I asked him, ―Are you right?‖

He said, ―No, actually, I’m not well at all.‖ At first, he said hehad Kaposi sarcoma, which is a manifestation of AIDS. Yousee, he didn’t want to say the word. Finally he said, ―When Iwas at UCLA I got this virus.‖

Now I knew it was AIDS.

We were devastated. And inmy case, it was followed bymonths of depression. Oh, myGod. I was so tired all thetime. I was trying to hide mydepression, too, and that waskilling me. And as I thoughtthrough it, I said, ―I’ve got to

do something with this.‖ I de-cided to tell my Rotary club. Iwanted to see if we could getan education and awarenessprogram going.

My kids were dead set againstit. They wanted to protectSteve. His concern was the

stigma associated with AIDS. But I kept going back to him. Isaid, ―If we could save a life or two, wouldn’t that make it wortht?‖ I said, ―Anyone who really cares about us will support us.‖He finally bought into the idea.

The day I was going to tell the club, it felt a little lonely. I didn’tknow what the response would be. But here’s the thing: I didn’tcare. I had to tell them about my son.

Because of my background in athletics, I sort of treated it asgame day.‖ I knew what the game plan was. I didn’t want to

go into some big melodramatic scene. I just wanted to tell mystory and ask if there would be interest in setting up an AIDSask force.

I got up and spoke, and really I’m kind of amazed that I dchoke up when I mentioned Steve’s name. No quivering cWhen I told everyone that I had a son who had AIDS, thwas a collective gasp. Guys like me don’t have kids who AIDS. That was the perception. So, yeah, I guess that shocthem. I could see it in their faces.

If no one had come forward to volunteer for the task forcthink I would have died. But thank God, people did. They caup to me in tears. We had some very important people sforward, including most of the past presidents of our club. Oof them was so ultra-conservative he made Attila the Hun like a flaming liberal.

And you know the amazing thing? Telling that secret got rimy depression almost immediately. What a relief it was! I dthink I ever told that group what they did. Not only did tlaunch the Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project. They eliminateddepression. I’d gone six months trying to hide those feelinsix months carrying around this secret. No one should havcarry something that heavy alone – not those afflicted by A

or their loved ones.

Steve died in November 1989.

Six months after I told my story, another member of our cluvery popular member, stood up at a meeting and announthat he had AIDS. That really won over a lot of the doubThomases.

After I told my story, a lot of people came up to the podium told me what a gutty call it had been. I said, ―Anybody wisoul would have done the same thing.‖ They didn’t believe But it’s true.
