Father, As we join together today as Rotarians and as friends, We acknowledge that wherever we go, we are always in Your Presence. We pray that our Actions may reflect this awareness For whatever our future will bring. If we must face disappointment, help us to learn patience. If we must face sorrow, help us to learn sympathy. If we must face pain, help us to learn strength. If we must face danger, help us to learn courage. If we must face failure, help us to learn endurance. If we achieve success, help us to learn gratitude. If we attain prosperity, help us to learn generosity. If we win praise, help us to learn humility. If we are blessed with joy, help us to learn sharing. If we are blessed with health, help us to learn caring. And as we stand before You today, Help us to learn the value of Service Above Self. May your Radiant Spirit Guide us and our loved ones, all our days,

And let us say AMEN.

GSE WELCOME HOSTING, A SIGNIFICANT TAKE OFF

PP Danny K. Villena District GSE Chair

The Rotary Club of Metro Lipa successfully hosted the welcome party for

the Inbound GSE Team from District 5220, Central California in the evening of July

7, 2011. In effect, it was a whole day activity because it all started when the Team

arrived via Philippine Airlines at Ninoy Aquino International Airport on that very

day as early as 5:00 in the morning, and ended with a fellowship night right after

the Welcome party program in the evening which lasted at around 11:30 in the

evening. President Ollie Bollozos together with PDG Onye Reyes, DGN Danny Ona

and District GSE Chair, Danny Villena personally went to the airport to meet the

Team and initially welcomed them to the Philippines, particularly to Rotary

District 3820. They themselves carried heavy loads of baggage and luggage of the

Team and brought them inside PDG Onye’s Toyota Grandia which also

transported the Team to Lipa City and billeted them to Anfa Hotel which was

arranged by PP Eric Nario and PP Dennis Oco who were already there when the

group arrived. A breakfast was arranged for the Team and after sometime

exchanging conversations and pleasantries, GSE Chair Danny briefed the Team on

the welcome party in the evening.

The hosting of a welcome party for the GSE Team from District 5220 was

indeed a significant take off project of the Rotary Club of Metro Lipa. From

Page 8: RCML Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 02

Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 2 July 12, 2011 Page 8

the very beginning, when the club knew that it had been assigned by District

Governor to be the host club of the welcome party for GSE Team, it did not plan

for any other take off project and made such hosting as its initial project for the

new Rotary Year 2011-2012. For one thing, preparations for this project had been

underway for a couple of months already even before the club had its turn over of

leadership in June 28, 2011. Planning took a lot of requirements because not only

did the Club plan for the just the welcome alone but for other requirements like

turning over the Team to its first Area stop which is Area III, Quezon. Since the

District GSE Chair comes from RCML, it seems to appear that the whole club has

been involved in whatever plans he has to pursue as regards the itinerary of

programs and activities that the Team has to undergo while here in the district.

The Immediate Past President himself, IPP Ankie and current President Ollie had

been very much involved in all the planning activities relative to the hosting of

GSE welcome party.

It can be told that the very successful welcome party for GSE Team could

very well be attributed to the over-all support and cooperation and involvement

of everyone in RC Metro Lipa under the leadership of its new President, Oliver

Bollozos.

KUDOS to RCML! KUDOS to Pres. Ollie!

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL 2011-12 THEME

My dear brothers and sisters in Rotary!

All of us in Rotary are looking to change the world – why

else would we be Rotarians? We believe that our world

can be happier, healthier, and more peaceful, and that

we can create that better world through our service.

In 2011-12, I will ask Rotarians to Reach Within to Embrace Humanity .

I will ask you to search first within yourselves, to understand that all of

us, everywhere, have the same dreams, the same hopes, the same

aspirations, and similar dilemmas. When we understand, and truly feel,

that others’ needs are the same as our own, we begin to understand

how important our work is. In the year ahead, we will have three

emphases in our Rotary service.

Our first emphasis in this Rotary year will be the family. The family and

the home are at the core of all our work – all our service begins here.

And through the family, we approach all of our community and indeed,

all of humanity, as an extended family, in which all members care for

each other. In times of joy and in times of need, no one is ever alone.

Our second emphasis will be continuity – finding the things we do well

and taking them to the next level. We must build on our successes,

expand on them, and strive to do even more. Of course, our greatest

obligation is to PolioPlus, where success is now so close.

Page 10: RCML Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 02

Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 2 July 12, 2011 Page 10

And our third emphasis will be change. We must understand that true

change can only begin with each of us, and start within us. We cannot

share peace with others if we do not have it to give. We cannot look

after the whole world without first looking after those closest to us: our

families, our clubs, and our communities.

Mohandas K. Gandhi said, “You must be the change you wish to see in

the world.” In Rotary, we endeavor to live ethically and honestly, to

share friendship and fellowship, to see equal worth in every human

being. We are not interested in the lowest common denominator, for

Rotary is anything but common. Instead, we work to elevate ourselves,

elevate others, and thereby embrace the world.

Together, we will Reach Within to Embrace Humanity . And in peace, harmony, and friendship, we will bring change – and a more joyful world.

President’s corner First and foremost, I would like to extend my thanks to all RCML

members who attended our first regular meeting for RY-2011-2012.

Although we have a few absences for various reasons of their own, we look

forward to perfect attendance in the next gatherings. More heads mean

more ideas.

As in any initial meeting of new “administration”, matters regarding

the conduct of our regular meetings were outlined. Once established,

procedures would ensure smooth flow of business. Discussed also is the

proposal for weekly collection of dues. Incidentally, remaining funds were

properly turned over by PP Eric Nario to incoming treasurer PP Lito Mojica.

In our discussion last meeting, we finalized plans for GSE team from

district 5220, Central California, USA as can be seen in the calendar of

activities of their stay not to mention several behind- the-scene

accommodations and adjustments. On Thursday, July 7, we successfully

held the welcome party for our inbound GSE Team. Special thanks to PGD

Onye Reyes, DGN Danny Ona & PP Danny Villena who coordinated with

the people concerned to come up with the schedule. To PP Eric Nario, PP

Dennis Oco, PP Lito Mojica who went out of their way to give full support to

this event and to the rest of RCML members who attended and showed

their assistance, I salute you.

Tonight, we will proceed with an extensive discussion for the

implementation of our club plans and programs and hoping to resolve the

time frame/ schedule for its proper implementation. Please also take note

Page 12: RCML Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 02

Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 2 July 12, 2011 Page 12

of the immediate implementation of collecting our rotary annual dues

spread weekly for a period of 8 months. This will facilitate 100% collection

but will not be such a burden to members than one-time payment.

Also in the agenda is the final schedule of RCML members who are

going to visit South Korea and Malaysia. The compositions of Team Korea

and Team Malaysia have to be decided so that there will be enough time

for those chosen to prepare.

More or less, this week’s meeting is generally on laying out plans,

discussion on how we can better implement them and other matters that

may crop up along the way. I anticipate the whole-hearted participation and

cooperation of all members as you always do.

The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along, they passed some people who remarked, "it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding". The

man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Later, they passed some people that remarked, "What a shame, he makes that little boy walk." They

decided they both would walk! Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride. So they both rode the donkey! Now they

passed some people that shamed them by saying "how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey". The boy and man said they were probably right so they decided to carry the donkey.

As they crossed a bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned.

Management Lesson: If you try to please everyone, you will eventually lose your ass.

A little bird was flying south for the winter. It was so cold, the bird froze and fell to the ground in a large field. While it was lying there,a cow came by and dropped some dung on it. As the frozen bird lay there in the pile of cow dung, it began to realize

how warm it was. The dung was actually thawing him out! He lay there all warm and happy, and soon began to sing for joy. A passing cat heard the bird singing and came to investigate. Following the sound, the cat discovered the bird under the

pile of cow dung, and promptly dug him out and ate him!

Management Lesson: 1) Not everyone who drops shit on you is your enemy. 2) Not everyone who gets you out of shit is your friend. 3) And when you're in deep shit, keep your mouth shut!

WELCOME, GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE TEAM FROM D – 5220, CENTRAL CALIFORNIA, USA

Led by its Team Leader, Dr. Ellen Hancock, the team has three lady members in the persons of Aimee Campiotti, Christine, Cecilia Martinez, and Christine Knight, all of whom are teachers involved in K – 8 education in Central California, USA. The team arrived at NAIA via Philippine Airlines, flight PR at around 5:00 in the morning on July 7, 2011. From the airport, the group was transported to LipaCity and was billeted at Anfa Hotel where the Welcome Part was scheduled in the evening of the same day. GSE Chair Danny V. briefed the team upon arrival at the Hotel. After taking breakfast , the group was advised to take some rest and to prepare for the Welcome Party for them in the evening.

The occasion was graced by Rotary leaders and personalities in the District including Immediate Past District Governor himself, Tato Dimayuga, PDG Paeng Tantuco, TRF Chair, PDG Onye Reyes, PP Val Castillo, District Secretary for Administration, PP Mandy Napenas, District Secretary for Operation, District Governor Nominee Danny Ona, Assistant Governor May Anne Katigbak, PP Lewi Tolentino, District Secretary for Area III and GSE Chair for Area III, and a number of Embracing President and Rotarians from the other Rotary Clubs in the district. RCML President, Olie Bollozos formally welcomed the Team and all other guests

and visiting Rotarians and officially opened the celebration. DGN Danny Ona formally introduced all guests and visiting Rotarians. The program was moderated by PP Arnold Capuloy, who was himself a GSE Team Member to Colorado, USA several years back.

The formal introduction of the Team through a power point presentation was made by GSE Chair, PP Danny Villena. Team Leader, Ellen Hancock did a very comprehensive presentation about the Team and its District 5220, including the team’s goals and objectives for GSE Program in District 3820, while the team members took their turn in presenting interesting subjects regarding their history and culture, economics and education and highlighted some of their place’s tourist attraction and interests. PDG Paeng Tantuco Sr., delivered a short but meaningful message to the delight of the Team. PDG Onye Reyes delivered a closing remarks which was immediately followed by the adjournment of Pres. RCML Projects: A Second Look Assessing what has been accomplished in the six areas of focus of Rotary, that is, disease prevention and treatment, water and sanitation, basic education and literacy, economic and community development, peace and conflict prevention/resolution, maternal and child health, it can be generally stated that those areas are being attended to, that we have projects and activities addressing on those categories. Considering the demographic situation of the Rotary Club of Metro Lipa, what has been done is no small feat. In water and sanitation, basic education and literacy and economic and community development, there are projects to the different barangays trying to cover a wider area and multiple sectors. In so doing, the outcome is thinly spread projects and the recipient barangays still feel the need for some other areas. The impact on the accomplishment is somewhat diminished.

This points to us that we need to have a second look on what we are doing and the processes involved particularly in selecting grantees for particular projects. How do we decide to grant projects? Is this the most effective way so we can achieve the impact we are looking for? Can we not change the paradigm that confines us from doing more effectively?

Another concern is medical mission activities. We have our medical missions that are organized for general and common medical needs. We have yet to initiate medical missions and/ or activities targeting solely on the needs of mother, child bearing and child rearing and care. Maybe one of the drawbacks in being involved in this kind of activity is the apprehension that the Rotary might be accused of taking sides on the issue of Reproductive Health Bill. The question is: do we have to wait for the fate of that Bill to avoid being in the firing line of the controversy? Where do we really stand as an organization? Believing in the Rotarian qualities of being not only resourceful and constructive but also being creative, imaginative and decisive, with managerial know-how, we know these questions will be resolved in no time at all.

Rotary information Changes you should know about for the new Rotary Year

The Changemaker Award will recognize clubs that make an extraordinary impact through their work in the Avenues of Service. Rotary International on Facebook

A new Rotary year is set to begin, and with it several programs aimed at supporting and strengthening clubs and districts. In addition, a fresh slate of leaders will take over at the club, district, and international level.

Kalyan Banerjee, of the Rotary Club of Vapi, Gujarat, India, will become Rotary's 101st president, and the third from India, on 1 July. Read a profile of Banerjee from The Rotarian. William B. Boyd, of the Rotary Club of Pakuranga, Auckland, New Zealand, will take over as Rotary Foundation trustee chair.

John Hewko will become Rotary International’s 12th general secretary on 1 July. He has said his priorities include improving Rotarians’ connections with the Secretariat and increasing awareness about what the Secretariat can offer. Download Hewko's speech from the 2011 RI Convention.

Other changes include: Four pilot programs will begin 1 July, designed to improve

recruitment and retention, allow for flexibility in club operations and structure, and give clubs an opportunity to explore new and innovative ways to promote member diversity -- all goals of the RI Strategic Plan. For each of three pilot programs – corporate member, associate member, and innovative and flexible Rotary club -- 200 clubs have been selected to participate, and about 125 will take part in a satellite club pilot program. Learn more.

The Changemaker Award will accompany the Presidential Citation during the 2011-12 Rotary year. The award will encourage Rotarians to focus on change and will recognize clubs that make an extraordinary impact through their work in the Avenues of Service. Learn more.

Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 2 July 12, 2011 Page 21

The World Community Service and Rotary Volunteers programs will be phased out as of 30 June, replaced by a new model designed to expand the resources available to clubs for connecting and partnering with one another. The RI Board approved a shift to a resource and support model for RI programs to reinforce the priorities and goals of the RI Strategic Plan.

Efforts to enhance Rotary’s public image will be undertaken by 49 Rotary public image coordinators (RPICs) working in partnership with their zone’s RI director, regional Rotary Foundation coordinator, Rotary coordinator, and district governors. RPICs, who are selected by the RI president or Rotary Foundation trustee chair, have professional expertise in public relations, journalism, or communications and will help support the RI Strategic Plan by conveying effective public relations practices to district leaders.

The Rotarian magazine launches its digital edition with the July issue. Subscribers can now choose to receive either the print or digital edition, or both. This would be a good time to buy a subscription for your Interact or Rotaract club, to inspire them with Rotary’s breadth. Learn more.

Rotary clubs’ annual per capita dues to Rotary International will increase to US$51 in 2011-12. The 2010 Council on Legislation also set dues at $52 for 2012-13 and $53 for 2013-14.

The RI Board of Directors will seat nine new directors 1 July, along with RI President-elect Sakuji Tanaka, of the Rotary Club of Yashio, Saitama, Japan. The new directors for 2011-13 are: José Antonio F. Antiório, of the Rotary Club of Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil; Kenneth R. ROTARACT/ INTERACT UPDATES PP Danny K. Villena

RAC Metro Lipa Conducts General Assembly Projects and Activities Line Up for RAC Year 2011-2012

In preparation for RAC Year 2011-2012, newly installed President of the Rotaract Club of Metro Lipa, Elvin Endozo, called the club’s first general assembly on June 26, 2011 at the Mabini Academy, Lipa City. Eighteen Rotaractors responded to the invitation and participated actively in the discussion of various topics and agenda under the guidance and facilitation of PP Danny K. Villena, Rotarian counselor of the c-0lub’s sponsored Rotaract Club. The assembly was an opportunity for the current leadership to give a comprehensive orientation to new and prospective Rotaractors about the basics of Rotary International and those of Rotaract Club. In effect, the orientation served as a refresher for the old Rotaractors. The assembly’s major activity was a brainstorming of the club’s possible projects and activities which the club may adopt for the current service year. At least five major projects and activities have been identified and lined up for the first semester of RY 2011-2012. These are the following:

Computer Literacy for Teachers and Students in selected public elementary schools in Lipa City which is expected to take off beginning July 2011. Coordination among target school beneficiaries has started;

“Piso Mula Sa Puso Para sa mga Batang Pinoy” , a social awareness and fund raising project at the same time which aims to raise the level of awareness and consciousness of the public regarding the need to provide help and assistance

Page 33: RCML Metropolis Vol. 16 Issue 02

to many young people who because of poverty have not been able to go to school or have become drop outs from school. Through its fund raising component, the amount to be collected from voluntary contributions from the general public, more particularly, from those who are economically well off, can be used by the club in undertaking projects and activities that would benefit these underprivileged young people;

Academic Subjects Tutoring. A weekend free tutorial lessons in different academic subjects for elementary pupils who have learning difficulties in their lessons, particularly in English, Math and Science.

Paligsahan sa Sabayang Pagbigkas. An inter-high school competition in Lipa City in observance of the annual Buwanng Wika during the month of August. This activity will be in collaboration with the Department of Education, Division of Lipa City..

Clean Up Campaign. A social awareness project which aims to raise the level of social responsibility of Lipenos in responding to environmental issues and concerns. A clean up brigade will be organized by RACML involving also the participation of barangay residents in pursuing clean up activities in their respective barangay vicinities.

The leadership of RACML hopes to undertake and

accomplish the above-mentioned projects and activities in collaboration with both the public and the private entities. Side by side with these projects is the club’s continuing effort to recruit more young people to join the Rotaract Club.

ThoughtS to ponder

Whose neglects learning in his youth,

Loses the past and is dead for the future. Euripides (484 BC - 406 BC)

We learn by example and by direct experience because there are real limits to the adequacy of verbal instruction.

Malcolm Gladwell

He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches. George Bernard Shaw (1856 - 1950)

The whole art of teaching is only the art of awakening the natural curiosity of young minds for the purpose of satisfying it afterwards.

Anatole France (1844 - 1924)

The past is a source of knowledge, and the future is a source of hope. Love of the past implies faith in the future.

Stephen Ambrose (1936 - 2002)

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; but remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.

Epicurus (341 BC - 270 BC)

It’s laff time

Tom, Dick and Harry went to a party. After the party they returned to the hotel. The hotel was 600 stories high. Unfortunately for them, the elevator was not working. They made a plan for the first 200 stories, Tom will crack jokes. The second 200 stories Dick will tell a happy story and lastly Harry will tell a sad story. They then started up the steps After 2 hours it was Harry's turn. He turned to the other two and said "Ok guys, here's my sad story. I forgot the keys downstairs.

Community singing

All My Life All my life, without a doubt I give you

All my life, now and forever till the Day I die, you and I will share

All the things this changing world can offer

So I sing, I'd be happy just to Stay this way, spend each day, with you

There was a time, that I just thought

That I would lose my mind You came along and then the sun did shine

We started on our way I do recall that every moment spent

Was wasted time but then I chose to lay it on the line

I put the past away I put the past away I put the past away

All my life, I will carry you through

All my life, between each hour of the passing days

I will stay with you

There was a time, that I just thought That I would lose my mind

You came along and then the sun did shine We started on our way

I do recall that every moment spent Was wasted time then I chose to lay it on the line

I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life I want this all my life

I wanted this all my life
