Alaska Dreams, providing unparalleled excellence in innovative building solutions

Company approaches 10-year safety milestone while working in some of the most remote areas and harshest climates

Q. What is the official name of your company? A. Alaska Dreams, Inc. Q. What do you most want people to know about your

company? A. If it can be imagined, AKD can build it. AKD is Alaska’s lead-

ing supplier and erector of steel-framed, fabric covered buildings. AKD has the ability to provide building solutions tailored to fit our customers’ needs.

Q. Where is your company lo-

cated? A. Our headquarters are in Fairbanks, AK along with a sales of-

fice in Anchorage, AK. Q. What year was the company founded? A. AKD was incorporated in 1994. Q. What is your company’s primary business activity?

A. Design, sales and construction of commercial and industrial buildings.

Q. Who are your primary customers? A. AKD’s customers are many of the oil producers on the

North Slope, the U.S. Military, municipalities, the mining industry along with many general contractors and private customers.

Q. How many employees does your company have? A. AKD employs an average of 15-30 employees - depending

on the season. Q. Describe the tools and equipment your company uses. A. AKD utilizes a variety of custom and industry-standard tools

and equipment. We use our own tools and equipment and sup-port other local businesses by renting specialized equipment in-cluding man lifts, fork lifts, cranes, plant lights, heaters, etc.

Q. Is your company expanding any of its operations or

locations?

A. AKD has no concrete plans to do so at this time, although we are always evaluating opportunities to expand and improve our ability to better serve our clients.

Q. Is the company changing any of its services or products? A. In Alaska – and in the oil and gas industry predominantly –

innovation is critical. AKD is always looking for ways to improve our products and services. Over the past few years, we have de-signed and introduced two new building lines that are now being used throughout the state of Alaska. Over the years, we have de-veloped multiple components, tools and methods that are now widely used in the fabric building industry.

Q. What is your company’s main strength or its edge over the

competition? A. The foundation of our long-term success is our client-centric

approach to doing business. AKD’s goal is to build loyal and last-ing partnerships. These relationships - with vendors and clients – allow us to provide products and services that meet, and often exceed, client expectations. These relationships have allowed AKD to partner with clients to construct approximately 3 million square feet of industrial and commercial buildings. AKD is an Alaska based company – we live and work in Alaska – and we want our fellow Alaskans to succeed with us.

Q. What new markets and/or opportunities has your com-

pany seen in the past few years? A. Due to our experience – and the versatility and durability of

fabric buildings – AKD is often the first and most common-sense choice for both new and established businesses. We have seen continued support from the oil and gas industry and expanded opportunities in mining along with the US Military.

Q. What is the most challenging work/contract the company

has undertaken? A. One of our most challenging and rewarding opportunities

was the design and construction of the Seward Ship’s Drydock (pictured). Multiple engineers and other experts considered the project impossible and – if completed – believed it would only “last a few weeks”. Alaska Dreams, Inc. constructed the 110’ wide x 210’ long x 100’ tall structure in 2001 and it is still performing without issues to this day.

Q. What are the biggest obstacles to completing work your

company undertakes? A. At times, as it is for most businesses, finding skilled team

members can be a challenge. Another challenge is the consistent increase in freight costs – both into and within the state.

Q. What do you see as your company’s biggest challenge in

the next five years? A. As a small business in Alaska, the biggest challenge for AKD

is maintaining our competitive advantage. We have played a pri-mary role in introducing and developing the fabric building in-dustry in Alaska for over 20 years. With this growth, comes intense interest from out-of-state competitors looking to capital-ize on our success. Alaska Dreams, Inc. is rooted in this great state and committed to Alaskans. We will accept this challenge and use our experience to continue to develop new and innovative prod-ucts and building designs to stay ahead of our competitors.

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other land-mark event coming up?

A. AKD is fast approaching a safety-related milestone; 10 years without any lost time due to an accident. The safety of our em-ployees - and those of our clients - is our #1 priority. This January AKD has been in business for 26 years.

Q. Does your company hire locally? A. Yes, we do. We primarily hire Alaskans for full and part-time

team members for office and field positions. Currently, over 30% of our team members have been employed with AKD for 10 years or longer.

Q. What is your company’s safety record? What steps does the

company take to ensure a safe work environment? A. AKD is approaching 10 years without lost work time due to

an accident. AKD’s safety culture instills a ‘Safety First’ mindset and supports it with regular training and updates.

Q. Has your company been involved in any community proj-

ects or charity events? A. AKD has been involved – and continues to be involved – in

many community projects, local sponsorships and charity events. We love being part of the community and giving back.

Q. What is the address of your company’s Website? A. www.alaskadreamsinc.com

ConocoPhillips ATO, AK Cargo Port, and FBX Utility Services Secu-rity installations.

Q. How many employees does your company have? A. LONG currently has 28 employees in Alaska, with a total of

430 throughout seven states. Our number of employees continues to increase each year.

Q. Describe the equipment your company uses and are there

any new equipment purchases planned? A. We carry Distech, Belimo, Milestone, S2, Openeye, Bosch, and

Honeywell, among many other supporting manufacturers. You can visit our website for a more detailed list of manufacturers in Alaska, and throughout LONG.

Q. Is your company expanding any of its operations or loca-

tions? A. Yes! LONG is officially opening a shop in Juneau, AK in 2020. Q. Is the company changing any of its services or products? A. LONG Security Solutions has just expanded its security offer-

ings to systems and hardware tailored to financial institutions (banks, credit unions). We aim to keep up to date on the latest inno-vations and are always looking to add new products or manufactur-ers to our list of offerings.

Q. What is your company’s main strength or its edge over the

competition? A. At LONG, we believe our depth of experience, the relation-

ships we cultivate with those we work with, and our solution-dri-ven approach sets us apart from the competition. We treat each building as if it were our own, and always do what is right, not what is easiest. You can expect us to communicate seamlessly, which ensures we provide holistic solutions to your needs.

Q. What new markets, clients or projects did your company at-

tract in the last year? A. Oil and gas, healthcare facilities, financial institutions, local

government, and native corporations were amongst our largest clients in 2019. These are also the markets we strive to expand our reach to within the coming years.

Q. What is the most challenging work/contract the company

has undertaken? A. Energy management and building performance upgrades for

30 buildings at the US Coast Guard base in Kodiak, AK. This project incorporated a multitude of systems and centralized management. The complexity derived from the scope of the project, as it is our largest to date, and the need to mitigate issues with older equip-ment while maintaining the workflow. LONG retrofitted many of the buildings and upgraded the DDC technology on older mechan-ical hardware, as well as added DDC where it did not originally exist.

Q. What are the biggest obstacles to completing work your

company undertakes? A. Working in Alaska generates unique obstacles we contend

with daily. These are typically travel and scheduling related, as we do much work in remote villages and outlying areas that can be dif-ficult to reach. There are also circumstances beyond our control that contribute to these obstacles, such as weather. Though these

obstacles are often uncontrollable, we work hard to mitigate their impact.

Q. What do you see as your company’s biggest challenge in the

next five years? A. With an increasing workload each year, our biggest challenge

ahead is finding skilled, talented technicians to perform the work and to improve and expand their abilities through continual train-ing so we can always provide the best service for our customers.

Q. Does your company have an anniversary or other land-

mark event coming up? A. In 2020, we will proudly recognize our 55th anniversary. Q. What is the average length of time employee’s work for the

company? A. With a turnover of less than 7%, our average employment is 9

years in Alaska. This does not include the 6 new positions that opened within the last year.

Q. What is your company’s safety record? What steps does the

company take to ensure a safe work environment? A. We believe in safety first, because people come first. Safety is

one of our core values and is embedded in our workflow. All em-ployees are expected to stop work if an unsafe environment is identified and are empowered to remedy the situation before con-tinuing the work. We conduct weekly, monthly, and annual meet-ings and trainings to ensure everyone goes home without injury. In Alaska, LONG has not had a reportable incident in several years.

Q. Has your company been involved in any community proj-

ects or charity events? A. LONG encourages volunteer work and fundraising in all our

locations. The LONG Endowment Committee allows employees to nominate local charitable organizations to which we contribute a portion of our profits each year. In Alaska, our 2019 endowment collectively donated $6000 to the Hope Center, Fairbanks Youth Ad-vocates, and Beacon Hill. LONG’s Alaska location continuously raises money or goods to give to local charities. Additionally, in 2019, clothing and toiletries were donated to the Hope Center and we hosted a toy-drive for children at a local hospital, among other events.

COMPANYNEWS in brief

Fugro awarded contract for KrisEnergy’s Apsara field

Fugro said Jan. 28 that it has been awarded a geotechnical con-tract for Apsara oil field in block A, offshore Cambodia, as part of the nation’s first hydrocarbon development. The Apsara field lies over the Khmer Basin, an unproduced geological basin in Cambo-dian maritime waters in the Gulf of Thailand.

Fugro will carry out a geotechnical investigation to support the design and installation phases of the Apsara mini phase 1A develop-ment. The work will be performed using their dedicated drill ship, the Fugro Mariner, and will comprise shallow gas pilot-hole drilling, and geotechnical sample boreholes and cone penetration tests.

“It is a pleasure to return to Cambodia, where our involvement in the block A exploration goes back to 2006, when we supported the drilling of the initial exploration wells,” said Jerry Paisley, Fugro’s business line director, Asia Pacific Region. “KrisEnergy has been our valued client since their establishment in 2009 and part of our success is owed to our unique ‘Triple A’ approach, where we acquire, analyze and advise on Geo-data across the full project life cycle”.

Vladimir Lavie, Senior Geophysicist for KrisEnergy, commented: “We thank our colleagues at Fugro for working with us on this his-toric project. This site investigation will be yet another milestone in the 2020 realization of the Apsara oil field. We’ve already completed our geophysical surveys, and Fugro’s geotechnical investigation will provide the final set of geomechanical information needed to de-risk the design, installation and operation of our project.”

Udo Cassee appointed Nordic Calista general manager

Calista Corp. said Jan. 15 that it has ap-pointed longtime employee of Nordic-Calista Services Udo Cassee to fill new role as gen-eral manager. Cassee has filled several man-agement roles with Nordic Calista since he started with the company in 2003.

Before Nordic Calista, Cassee spent 11 years of his oilfield career with Schlumberger where he worked through different field, en-gineering and management positions in the Netherlands, Norway, United Kingdom and

Alaska. He has extensive experience in the rig and service industry, offshore, onshore and Arctic operations.

Cassee holds a Bachelor of Science in oil and gas technology from the University “Noorder Haaks” in Den Helder, the Nether-lands.

He is an active member with the Civil Air Patrol, working prima-rily with young cadets and the glider program. Cassee has volun-teered as an active pilot with the Iditarod Air Force since 2012 and can be found along the trail supporting the Last Great Race.

Calista Corp. acquires interest in Delta Constructors

Calista Corp. said Jan. 6 that it has acquired a 25% interest in Delta Constructors, a leading oil and gas construction firm operat-ing in Alaska, Canada and the Lower 48.

Calista’s minority, non-controlling stake in Delta Constructors is owned by Bektuq Holding LLC, a holding company for Calista sub-sidiaries working in the energy, engineering and environmental sector.“Delta Constructors’ strong performance in Alaska and else-where will complement and diversify Calista’s current investments for the benefit of our Shareholders. I am excited about working with our new partner to expand our services to current and future customers in the resource development sector,” said Calista Corp. President/CEO Andrew Guy.

Delta Constructors was founded in Anchorage, Alaska, in 2007 and subsequently expanded to Canada and the Lower 48.

Calista also recently acquired its JV majority partner Nordic Well Servicing Inc., thereby acquiring full ownership of Nordic Calista Services, a drilling and workover company that primarily operates on the North Slope.

Calista Corp. acquires Nordic-Calista Services

Calista Corp. said Jan. 3 that it has acquired Nordic-Calista Serv-ices, a drilling and workover company, operating primarily on Alaska’s North Slope.

Calista took full ownership of Nordic Calista by purchasing Nordic Well Servicing Inc., the company’s founder and majority owner. Calista had participated as a 20% Nordic Calista joint ven-ture partner alongside Nordic Well Servicing since 1985.

“This is Calista’s first major acquisition since 2013 and we are very pleased to create new value for our Shareholders by increas-ing our investment in Alaska’s North Slope,” said Calista Corp. Presi-dent/CEO Andrew Guy.

Alaska’s North Slope is experiencing an upsurge in construction and drilling due to recent oil discoveries and development in new and existing oil fields. Nordic Calista owns five drilling rigs and five camps available for projects on the North Slope.

Calista’s last major significant acquisition was its 2013 purchase of STG Inc. and its subsidiaries Alaska Crane, Gambell Properties and Terra Foundations. STG specializes in heavy construction proj-ects in Alaska including the installation of wind energy and telecommunication towers, bulk fuel systems, bridges, pile founda-tions and other infrastructure needs in rural and urban areas.

Lynden celebrating 20 years of improvements at Red Dog Mine

As reported by Lynden News Dec. 27, 20 years ago, NANA/Lyn-den Logistics LLC successfully bid and took over the onsite truck-ing services for Red Dog Mine near Kotzebue, Alaska. The services include hauling ore concentrates, freight and fuel for the mine, which is one of the largest zinc mines in the world. In the past two decades, a core team of 50 drivers and mechanics have hauled over 57 billion pounds of zinc and lead concentrates, 320 million gallons of fuel and 1 million tons of freight between the Red Dog Mine and port site 52 miles away.

“When we took over in 1999, we inherited tractors and trailers from the prior contractor and immediately saw an opportunity to improve the equipment to a more stable, environmentally safe and productive design,” explains General Manager Mark Tatlow. “We switched from a nine-axle tractor trailer set with a dolly to an 11-axle trailer set with the rear trailer connected directly to the lead trailer. This allowed us to increase our payload from 170,000 pounds to 280,000 pounds. We eliminated the dolly and pintle hitch between the two trailers so they are connected by a single connection point for increased stability. We also added a solid lid to the trailers and eliminated the side dump doors to reduce dust es-caping during transport.”

In 2008, NANA/Lynden improved the trailer design again to in-crease payload. The 91-foot train with 12-axle tractor trailer sets al-lows hauling of 295,500 pounds of concentrate - 15,500 pounds more than the seven-axle sets and a 74% increase in payload over the last 20 years. “We’ve probably got the best ton-mile-per-gallon numbers of anyone in the country, even though the return trip is empty,” Mark says. For more information visit www.lynden.com.

Lynden ranks No. 4 in Alaska’s Top 49ers As reported by Lynden News Dec. 19, Lynden ranked fourth

among all Alaska companies in Alaska Business Magazine’s annual Top 49ers listing. Lynden employees attended the luncheon this fall in Anchorage to accept the award. Members of the Lynden team are pictured accepting the award.

Lynden also participated in a fundraiser during the event to sup-port the nonprofit Alaska Resource Education group whose mis-sion is to teach students about Alaska’s natural resources. “We appreciate Lynden’s generous donation,” said Ella Ede, executive di-rector. “Our curriculum encourages students to seek careers in en-ergy fields in Alaska like oil and mining.”

LTI, Inc. delivers container homes for Impossible Roads Foundation

As reported by Lynden News Dec. 12, LTI Inc. drivers delivered 13 containers from Seattle to Ferndale, Washington, in November to assist the nonprofit Impossible Roads Foundation with a special Vet-erans Day project. The containers are retrofitted as homes for dis-abled veterans and will be distributed in the Whatcom County area.

“You guys truly are lifesavers,” writes John Hope of the Impossi-ble Roads Foundation. “We do not know how we could build and provide these tiny homes to veterans without the kindness and generosity of you delivering them to us.”

Matson donated the 40-foot high-cube containers and LTI Inc. contributed transportation to support the project. The containers are built specifically for the veterans’ needs with ADA access. “We dubbed every tiny home we create ‘The Impossible Tiny Home’ be-cause it is a small miracle that all of the materials, insight, design, labor, and personnel came together to build them,” Hope said.

UAF leads project to map hydrocarbon seeps on seafloor

The University of Alaska Fairbanks said Nov. 21 that researchers from the university are mapping oil and gas seeps off Alaska’s coast to better understand hydrocarbon resources and seafloor ecosys-tems. The work is being funded by the U.S. Bureau of Ocean En-ergy Management.

At hydrocarbon seeps, fluids leaking from the Earth’s surface carry hydrocarbon gases, primarily methane but also ethane and propane. The fluids, which sometimes include crude oil, may ooze out slowly or bubble vigorously into the ocean. On land, seep loca-tions have traditionally been used in prospecting for petroleum de-posits. In the ocean, they can also be used to help assess oil and gas resource potential, and their chemistry can provide an environ-mental baseline to distinguish natural environmental conditions from oil spills.

UAF oceanographer Jennifer Reynolds is leading the project in collaboration with Fugro, a geo-data specialist company with decades of experience in Alaska and a global expert in seeps map-ping. Fugro’s participation on the project is being led by geologist Kelley Brumley, a UAF alumna and seeps expert. Brumley and Reynolds are using the geology of the region to identify likely areas of additional seeps. They hope to check their predictions in future fieldwork at sea.

To map seep locations in the continental shelf off Alaska’s coast, the team is reviewing a century’s worth of reports, publications and data. Source information extends from the first days of Alaska oil and gas exploration a century ago through modern charting and fisheries surveys in Alaska waters. “Every seep is important,” said Reynolds. “We’ll put all of them on the map and rate how confident we are about the accuracy of each location.”

“Fugro is thrilled to partner with UAF on this project. We share a long record of collaboration with the university on both public and private-sector projects,” Brumley said. She also noted that mapping natural seeps allows industry to focus their oil and gas exploration activities on the most promising areas, thereby reducing the need for large-scale 3D seismic programs. Fluor’s Gordie Howe International Bridge Project wins gold

Fluor Corp. announced Nov. 18 that Bridging North America has won gold for project financing in this year’s National Awards for Innovation and Excellence in Public-Private Partnerships. Bridging North America is a partnership with Fluor, ACS Infrastruc-ture Canada and Aecon Group Inc., which is constructing the Gordie Howe International Bridge Project for Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority. The award was presented by the Canadian Coun-cil for Public-Private Partnerships at its 27th annual conference in Toronto.

“The Gordie Howe International Bridge project further solidi-fies Fluor’s expertise in North America and as a leader in P3 devel-opment and the delivery of infrastructure megaprojects,” said Terry Towle, group president of Fluor’s infrastructure and power business. “We are honored to be recognized with this award and to partner with WDBA to design, build, finance, operate and maintain such a vital international link between Canada and the U.S. and the Windsor-Detroit region.”

The Gordie Howe International Bridge project is a planned bridge and border crossing spanning the Detroit River and con-necting Detroit with Windsor, Ontario, Canada by linking Inter-state 75 and Interstate 96 in Michigan with the new extension of Highway 401 (Rt. Hon. Herb Gray Parkway) in Ontario. It is the first new major trade link under construction between the United States and Canada in 40 years. The international crossing, which will be the longest cable-stayed bridge in North America, repre-sents one of the largest recent private financings of a P3 in Canada with a total project cost of CAD $5.7 billion.

Fluor awarded engineering services agreement

Fluor Corp. said Oct. 31 that its consortium with the Branch of KMG Engineering LLP KazNIPImunaigas was awarded a three-year engineering services agreement, plus two potential one-year exten-sions, by Karachaganak Petroleum Operating B.V. for projects at its Karachaganak Field in Kazakhstan. Fluor booked the undisclosed contract value in the third quarter of 2019.

“This important award will allow Fluor to build a long-term rela-tionship with KPO and to expand our capabilities and presence in Kazakhstan,” said Mark Fields, group president of Fluor’s energy and chemicals business. “Our involvement in the early stages of the project means we can work with KPO across a range of work to optimize the Karachaganak field with a focus on achieving an out-standing safety performance and operational excellence.”

Fluor’s scope of work includes feasibility studies, front-end engi-neering design and other engineering services. Fluor plans to open an office in Aksai for dedicated project personnel with scalable ac-commodation to meet all engineering requirements.

An engineering team in Fluor’s Farnborough, United Kingdom, office as well as global subject matter experts will also support project needs.

To the maximum extent possible, Fluor will leverage local engi-

neering talent to execute its scope of work. Fluor will also provide training and knowledge transfer to increase local talent on the proj-ect during execution as project needs dictate.

Colville completes milestone fuel delivery to Prudhoe Bay

Colville, an Alaska-based company providing logistics and fuel transport services for the North Slope oil fields, said Sept. 16 that it received a barge delivery of 3.5 million gallons of ultra low sulphur diesel fuel ahead of another busy season in the oil fields. Crews of-floaded the fuel into storage tanks at Colville’s Deadhorse tank farm, completing what is believed to be the largest-ever delivery of fuel to Prudhoe Bay by barge.

This barge delivery follows a similar operation in 2018 that suc-cessfully delivered 2 million gallons of USLD. Fuel for North Slope oil field operations is typically delivered via the 500 mile Dalton Highway aka “the haul road” from Fairbanks. Colville trucks make 2,000 such trips each year, each hauling nearly 10,000 gallons of diesel. The barge delivery is equivalent to 370 round trips each sav-ing 1,000 miles of overland transit.

The barge fuel delivery was prompted by the increased demand due to exploration and other activity in the North Slope oil fields. “This operation is a reflection of broader communication with our oil field customers, allowing them to proactively develop their ex-ploration and operational plans. We listened to our customers and responded,” said Dave Pfeifer, Colville president & CEO.

Pfeifer says that Colville will continue to consider additional barge deliveries of fuel in the future, however, they will not replace the trucking operation.

Lynden Air Cargo completes Hercules fleet modification

Lynden Air Cargo said Oct. 4 that it has completed another Her-cules modification this summer, installing a “Short-POD APU” to en-hance the reliability and performance of its aircraft. According to Lynden Air Cargo President Rick Zerkel, the size of the project re-quired Federal Aviation Administration approval.

“It took about a year and thousands of hours to take the military data and convert it to an FAA-approved package, conform the kits, convert an existing auxiliary power unit, modify the airframe, in-stall and test, then compile and finalize over 1,000 pages of reports and manuals,” Rick explained. The project required support from multiple groups inside and outside Lynden Air Cargo, such as the staff from the FAA aircraft certification office, engineering repre-sentatives, personnel from Lockheed and Kellstrom Defense, KF Aerospace and Lynden Air Cargo’s quality control team, engineer-ing, publications, maintenance and special projects.

The upgrade kit provides aircraft operators with increased relia-bility, quicker engine starts, and reduced maintenance and operat-ing costs by replacing the out-of-production gas turbine compressor/air turbine motor with a modified APU that will help standardize the fleet with the other APU-equipped aircraft.

Denali Universal Services receives safety award

Denali Universal Services said Oct. 1 that it is honored to an-nounce that its security division at the Chevron Phillips Chemical sites in Texas has been awarded the Contractor Safety Excellence Award, a safety award for outstanding safety accomplishments.

The award is presented annually to contractor companies that achieve superior safety performance while working for Chevron Phillips Chemical during the award year. There are several eligibility requirements to include cumulative hours worked and meeting Chevron Phillips Chemical total recordable incidence rate safety target.

“On behalf of our leadership team, I congratulate the security di-vision at the Chevron Phillips Chemical sites for their commitment to high standards of safety every day,” said Corey Parrent, director of health safety and environment for Denali Universal Services. “We’re proud to receive this award because it shows our commitment to safety performance and honored to have been selected as a recipi-ent two years in a row.”

Lynden training center first to conduct rescue course

The Lynden Training Center recently conducted a six day course in Kodiak for the Kodiak Fire Department. “We are ex-tremely proud that the General Technical Rescuer class is the first of its kind to be taught in Alaska for State of Alaska certification,” says Tyler Bones, director of HSSE.

The Fairbanks based Training Center has been working with the Alaska Fire Marshal’s office for the past six months to become ac-credited to instruct the course. “It’s rare that new courses are added to the state’s accreditation list, so our training center being the first shows what a great working relationship we have with the state,” Tyler explained. In 2015, the Center received accreditation from the state of Alaska Training and Education Bureau as the first third party provider to offer state of Alaska hazardous materials training, a designation usually reserved for state agencies and fire departments.

The Kodiak Fire Department has received Lynden training for the past two years. Last year, after the department completed the Confined Space Rescue course, firefighters put their skills to the test when responding to a rescue on a fishing vessel.

For more than 20 years, the Lynden Training Center in Fair-banks, Alaska, has provided training to individuals, businesses and government employees all over Alaska and the Lower 48. Experi-enced Lynden instructors educate, train and prepare people from all industries to work safely, prevent accidents and to respond to disasters like chemical spills, train derailments and other emergen-cies. Professional development courses with classroom instruc-tion are followed by hands-on exercises and drills in simulated response situations.
