THE STORY OF SAINT FAUSTINA: Saint Faustina

was born Helena Kowalska in 1905. She was raised in a large Polish peasant family and grew up a poor girl with little education or prospects. But when Jesus appeared to her, telling her to head for Warsaw and become a nun, she secretly hopped on a train for the city. Arriving penni-less, she went throughout Warsaw and knocked on the doors of convents until the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy finally accepted her. In 1930, Sister Faustina, as she was then called, began to receive regular mystical visits from Je-sus. In these visions, He asked her to spread devotion to His Divine Mercy. Christ’s mission for Faustina was fulfilled after her death, when Saint John Paul II declared the Sunday after Easter to be Divine Mercy Sunday. Devotion to Christ’s Divine Mercy continues to grow worldwide. In April 2000, Faustina Kowalska was declared the first saint of the 21st century.

The dramatization of St. Faustina’s life and mission, and modern day reflections on Divine Mercy, can be seen at St. Paul Parish, this Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at 7:00PM. There is no cost to attend. A free-will offering will be taken. Since it is open seating no reservation is needed. It is provided to us by St. Luke Productions.

SPRING The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is anoth-er. The difference between them is sometimes as great as a month. —Henry Van Dyke

40 Days for Life is a local, peaceful vigil to educate people who are visiting Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh for abor-tions. It runs from March 1-April 9, 2017, from 7AM-7PM. The idea is to re-educate people on the reality of abortion in hopes of changing their minds and to direct them to maternity resources. A small local group will be departing Jeannette and going to Planned Parenthood in Pittsburgh on March 31st at 4:00PM. They will pray and re-educate from 5:00PM-7:00PM before returning home. What will you give up...some time.

40 Days for Life is not a stand alone event. They are active across the nation. Their statistics reveal that in 19 cam-paigns they report saving 12,668 babies from abortion; caused 141 abortion workers to convert; and saw the closing of 75 centers where abortions were performed. Their local contact is Nikki Bruni, who can be reached at 412-926-9416 or [email protected]. Our parish contact is Paul Whalen at 724-836-3096. You may contact either to get more information or become involved in a vigil.

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirst-ing one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

DID YOU KNOW ... that St. Pope John Paul II spent hours each day in Adoration before the Blessed Sacrament, especially before his mission trips and while making major decisions and writing most of his works? He stated that this was the best way to prepare ourselves, through love, for any kind of service, activity, concern, or charitable work. The partner parishes of St. Paul and St. Bruno hold Adoration every weekday from 9 AM- 3:15 PM, with extended Thursday hours until 7:15 PM, in the Chapel in the basement of St. Bruno’s recto-ry. Please drop in and experience the blessings. To sign up for your own committed hour each week (subs can be found if necessary), please call Elaine at (724) 864-6145 or visit [email protected] .
