President’s Message 2019

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the ROCHESTER DENTAL STUDY CLUB I would like to welcome you to our ninety-third annual session! It has been a wonderful and grateful experience helping put together such a great program the last few years.

Drs. Marc Malatesta, Michael Molisani, Nicholas Schellati, and I have done our very best to put forward an excellent program this year. Our committee has strived to diversify the lec-tures and have chosen an assortment of topics that we found pertinent to the practice of dentistry today. We feel this year’s topics will be engaging and believe they will contribute to the betterment of our everyday practices. In addition, we have sought out a variety of advertisers in the hopes of developing meaningful relationships that will also enhance our practices. Please remember to join us for happy hour to celebrate another successful year. It will be held at Next Door and is expected to be another amazing evening of good food and great camaraderie.

This year we are excited to introduce a new venue for our meetings. We would like to extend a special thank you to Dr. David Lawrence and Monroe Community College for graciously hosting our meetings, at their first-class facility. We are excited to embark on this new relationship together!

As the program has evolved over the years, we have built this year’s program on the foun-dation laid by the dedication and contributions of the previous officers and executive coun-cils. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to them for all their hard work in helping to shape this program into what it is today. A very special thank you goes to all the speakers that volunteer their time in the middle of the week to lecture on such cold winter evenings. We know it takes a lot of time and effort to put together the presentations.

Lastly, this year’s ultimate success could not be achieved without the hard work of Marc, Michael, and Nicholas and I would like to personally recognize and thank them for a job well done.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Dr. Matthew [email protected]

Medical Cannabis: Oral Health Implications and Strategies

January 8, 2019 – 6:30pm and 7:45pm

Lecturer: Dr. Marc Rossow Medical and recreational cannabis use is increasing nationwide, obligating dentists to understand the science behind cannabinoids and their effects on the endogenous cannabinoid receptor system, in order to most effectively manage risk for cannabis using patients, irrespective of use rationale. Simple protocols and strategies will be discussed for evaluation and education to reduce risk for motivated patients in this population

Dr. Marc Rossow graduated from SUNY Buffalo School of Dental Medicine in 1995, after graduating from The Pennsylvania State University in 1991. He completed a one year General Practice Residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, and has been practicing at 2971 Culver Road in Irondequoit since the summer of 1996. Unique life events (a family member’s cancer diagnosis) motivated Dr. Rossow to learn as much about medical cannabis and its medical and dental effects as possible, within the limitations of research, due to cannabis’ current Schedule I classification. Dr. Rossow electively took and passed the 4.5 hour continuing medical education course required of NYS physicians for qualifying patients in New York, just to see how his knowledge compared to the state requirements, and submits (humbly… really!) that he is among the leading medical cannabis oral health experts (for whatever that’s worth). Dr. Rossow enjoys activities outside of dentistry including time with friends and family (especially walking the dog), reading, playing drums in the local band “Rugburn”, and skiing in the winter.
