INTRODUCING

Dr. Michael N. Franks BDS (WITS), Cert Endo (U Penn)

Dr Michael Franks graduated from TheUniversity of Pennsylvania School of Dentistry inPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania (1979) with aCertificate in Endodontics.

Being Past President and Founder of the SouthAfrican Endodontic Society, Dr Franks haslectured extensively - both in Australia andoverseas - on various topics.

Dr Franks was one of the first clinicians in Australia to adopt rotaryinstrumentation techniques, which in the meantime have revolutionizedendodontics both in terms of operator precision and in terms of patientexperience. For the past 20 years he has offered treatment with i.v. sedation(with the help of a registered specialist anaesthetist) for the particularlyanxious patient. Dr Franks’ particular interest lies in the revision of previouslyfailed endodontic treatment, and in the salvage of “terminal” teeth.

Prior to his residency in endodontics, Dr. Franks graduated from the BDSprogram at the University of Witwatersrand (South Africa) and spent six yearsin General Practice.

Dr Torsten H Steinig D.D.S. (MHH) Dr. med. dent. (MHH) MS (BCD)CERT. ENDO. (BCD)

Dr Torsten H Steinig graduated from BaylorCollege of Dentistry in Dallas, Texas (2004) witha Certificate in Endodontics, and an M.S. degreein Oral Biology. Prior to joining “Endodontics OnGeorge” in Sydney, Dr Steinig worked as anEndodontist in private practice in Dallas, Texas.

Dr Steinig has published numerous scientificarticles and presented at international conferences, and in 2003 was awardedthe first prize by the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) for hispresentation on the use of MTA® in apexification cases. His research on the topicof “Pain in Endodontics” was supported by a grant from the research foundationof the AAE.

Prior to his residency in endodontics, Dr. Steinig graduated for the DDSprogram at the Medical College of Hanover, West-Germany (1989), andcompleted a concurrent post-doctoral degree in 1990 (Dr.med.dent.). Heworked in general dental practice in Melbourne for ten years, and held publicoffice with the Australian Dental Association.

Dr Steinig is a member of the scientific review committee of the Journal ofEndodontics (USA)

Dr. Shalin V. Desai (B.D.S., Grad Dip P.H. (UNSW), D. Clin. Dent.(Otago))

Shalin graduated with Doctor of Clinical Dentistry(Endodontics) from the University of Otago in2009. Prior to specialization, Shalin spentconsiderable time practicing general Dentistry inpublic and private sectors in Sydney.

Since returning to Sydney, he has been inspecialist practice in Sydney as well as workingpart time as clinical educator for final year dental students at Westmead dentalhospital.

Shalin has published scientific papers in national and international journalsand his doctoral thesis on endodontic immunology was presented at Europeanendodontic society’s biannual meeting at Edinburgh. Shalin is actively involvedin endodontic teaching and has enjoyed presentations and hands-on coursesfor study club meetings and local dentist groups.

Endodontic therapy has come a long way. Few would disagreethat procedural based Endo techniques currently on themarket lend themselves to faster results and more predictabletreatment outcomes. However it would also be generalconsensus that Endodontics is right up there with the moststressful daily activities. Add to this the patient perception ofEndo and possible short to medium term failures and flare-ups- this mix makes for a challenging few hours for both, patientsand practitioners alike.

We will breakdown the procedures into a set of patientoriented strategies – from the first phone call to the firstconsultation, from the first file to the finished obturation andbeyond, our endo toolbox.

At the outset – being able to ‘see’ and then understanding‘what is seen’, is fundamental in Endo. We would encourageyou to bring magnification and lighting on this full day course. The toolbox will consist of the following learning objectives.

The learning objectives for our participants are:

● The initial telephone call to the critical consultation. What we doand why. From ‘pre- and postoperative events’ to the ‘Do I reallyneed a crown?’ questions. Clear Concise Communication.

● Assessment of Case Difficulty. Opening Limitations, RadiographicInterpretations, extensive coronal destruction – all can becomeissues that can increase frustration and stress, and may have animpact on the prognosis. Accessing degree of difficulty will directyour time allocation and operative requirements accordingly.Should this case be done in a single visit or in multiple visits ?

● Technical issues – Diagnosis, Prep, Shaping, Irrigation andObturation. A well sealing restoration with a good endo will providethe best conditions for treatment success.

● Is the tooth ready for filling? Obturation steps and skills will bepresented as well as the nuts and bolts of restoring anendodontically treated tooth, as equally important factors of longterm success of the procedure.

All attendees will be required to bring 3 extracted teeth with access pre-cut. If you have any specific non-latex glove requirements or otherrequirements – please bring these to our attention before the course. The Hands on component will include our classic methodologies forcleaning and shaping the root canal. Irrigation protocols and anatomicconsiderations will be presented. The obturation technique used will be‘warm vertical condensation’. This course carries six ContinuingProfessional Development hours.
