Direct From Dawson National Library Week: April 7-13 The Lester Public Library is
repeating its popular
campaign encouraging all
to shop locally AND support
your local library. We have
partnered with more than 60
area businesses to make the
week-long celebration
special (and beneficial!) for
everyone.
And once again, Manitowoc
Public Library and its business
partners are joining in to offer
more great deals and prizes!
During National Library Week
April 7-13, visit one (or many!)
of the business community
partners in Two Rivers,
Mishicot and Manitowoc,
show your library card–any
library card from any library
in the world–and you’ll get
anything from a free ice
cream cone to 20% off a
purchase. Each business is
offering up something
special. Don’t have a library
card? No problem. You can
always get one at your local
public library.
After you’ve shown your
library card, made a
purchase and received the
advertised deal, bring the
receipt or raffle entry you got
from the business you
patronized back to the
Lester or Manitowoc library.
Lists of participating
businesses, their special
deals, and (cont. on page 3)
“We hope you’ll visit our
business partners and
offer them your support
in response...”
When the Civil War gripped the
nation, Two Rivers was a community
of barely 1,000 people, yet almost
200 of its men served in the Union
Army. The impact of the war did not
end when the last shot was fired. It
had a permanent effect on
community memory, resulting in the
erection of a monument
memorializing those who served.
Civil War reenactor and researcher
Mark Gotstein and retired professor
of history Patrick Gagnon recount
Two Rivers’ participation in the war
and the eventual procurement and
placement of the Old Soldier.

Thurs, April 4 ▪ 6:00 PM Networking to Win for Everyone (Introverts, too!)
Networking can be nerve-racking, even for seasoned professionals.
Learn tips to change your approach to networking so that it
successfully impacts your business endeavors and perhaps your life.
The featured speaker is Ryan Kauth, lecturer of entrepreneurship for
the Austin E. Cofrin School of Business at UW-Green Bay. His
background is in small-business advising and business banking. He
enjoys working on local and regional initiatives. And despite
considering himself an extreme introvert, he has served as officer,
mentor, board and committee member, advisor and administrator in
a myriad of organizations from a local Habitat for Humanity to
Google’s European Innovation
Academy.
Meet in the library’s Community Room
for the presentation—and of course,
networking!
For more information or to RSVP, visit the
Two Rivers BizStarts Facebook page or
call the Help Desk at (920)793-7114.
Harker is instrumental in helping keep the busy youth-area book shelves neat
and well organized. She has also assisted with newspaper indexing—gleaning
old newspapers in order to find and record marriages, births and deaths in our
area. Such notices used to be placed randomly throughout newspapers rather
than appearing together in one section, so our indexers were careful to comb
every issue in order not to overlook information. Harker enjoyed the many
unusual, amusing and weird-but-true articles she came across, and even
archived her own collection of interesting and odd local stories.
The former teacher is an avid reader and especially enjoys political thrillers. She is a native of Cuba City,
but needing an adventure, lived in Los Angeles for a few years. She enjoys traveling, and has visited
Europe and traveled extensively in Canada. She said she appreciates the respectful customer service
she sees offered here. And the biggest benefit of volunteering? “It keeps me young,” Harker said.

LEARN A LANGUAGE A new resource free to library users
Want to learn a language? With
your library card, select from more
than 100, from Afrikaans to Zulu.
Transparent Language Online is
considered among the best
software for learning or brushing
up on a language. Innovative
technology and methods enable
faster and more reliable
language learning outcomes for
anyone intent on becoming
proficient in another language.
The software is welcoming; “My
Learning Path” guides you
through the lessons, automatically
moving you to the next section as
appropriate. Each unit contains
multiple lessons and ends with an
assessment. Each lesson contains
about eight or nine sets of
exercises, grouped together by
what kind of learning is involved,
such as writing, reading,
speaking, listening, or generating
language.
How quickly you complete lessons
and units is up to you. Each lesson
takes 10 to 15 minutes, less in the
early lessons and more in later
ones.
If you enable a microphone,
there’s a feature that provides
immediate feedback on the
accuracy of your pronunciation.
Various categories within the
languages are targeted for
different ages, and for those in
the business or medical worlds.
Some languages include more
than one dialect; in Spanish,
you can select between Latin
American and Castilian.
It’s a great resource if you’re
planning a trip; in Norwegian,
for example, units include
“organizing your trip,” “getting
around in the city,” “eating out”
and “dealing with money.”
To get started, go to
www.lesterlibrary.org, click on
“Research Resources,” and look
for the Transparent Language
Online logo.

Join an exciting community
reading event sponsored by
the Lester Public Library and
the other five libraries of the
Manitowoc-Calumet library
system.
The book selection for this
event is The Death and Life
of the Great Lakes by
Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reporter Dan Egan.
Threats to the Great Lakes are real & urgent.
Egan deftly portrays an ecological catastrophe
We live on the shores of the world’s largest
freshwater system, the Great Lakes. The lakes are
home to complex and changing ecosystems.
Building on the stories in The Death and Life of the
Great Lakes, UW Sea Grant Institute’s fisheries
outreach specialist Titus Seilheimer digs deeper into
the issues affecting us today and into the future.
The Great Lakes: Changing Lakes in Changing Times
happening right before our eyes, blending the epic
story of the lakes with an examination of the perils
they face and the ways we can restore and
preserve them.
Pick up a copy of the book, give it a read, and
attend the community discussion hosted by Jeff
Dawson at 6:30 PM Tuesday, March 5. Even if you
haven’t finished (or started) the book, join us!
The following week at 6:00 PM March 13, Dr. Titus
Seilheimer, fisheries outreach specialist for the UW
Sea Grant Institute, kicks off our Scholar for Life series
and delves further into issues raised in the book.
Seilheimer holds a
doctorate in biology
from McMaster
University in Ontario,
where he studied fish
habitat in Great Lakes
coastal wetlands.
Before he came to
Wisconsin Sea Grant, he
was a research
ecologist for the U.S.
Forest Service in St. Paul, developing water quality
models for the Western Great Lakes.
This public lecture series is in partnership between
UW-Manitowoc and the Lester Public Library. The
series meets the mission of both institutions: providing
access to lifelong learning that enhances our lives
and community. No registration is required.

Babies Bloom & 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten reading programs
Plant the seed to your child’s success! Learning to read begins long before kindergarten. Sharing
books together strengthens your child’s foundation for learning and creates a long-lasting
relationship with their favorite teacher-YOU! The library offers two reading programs to get you
started and BOTH offer new books as incentives to keep going. Stop by the Help Desk for details!
Every Child Ready to Read
Early literacy and the Lester Public Library
Help your child get ready to read with these simple
activities.
Singing - Songs are a wonderful way to learn about
language. Singing also slows down language so
children can hear the different sounds that make
up words. This helps when children begin to read
printed language.
Sing the alphabet song to learn about letters.
Sing nursery rhymes so children hear the
different sounds in words. Don’t know any
nursery rhymes or looking for something new?
Visit the PLAY neighborhood for suggestions!
Clap along to the rhythms in songs so children
hear the syllables in words. The library has a
music collection geared specifically for young
children-ask at the Help Desk to find them!
Attend a children’s program at the library-
we’re always singing!
The Lester Public Library offers classes for all its
earliest learners to help them get ready to read.
Each six-week class focuses on how YOU can
share the five early literacy practices with your
child.
