GODOLPHIN THREE-YEAR-OLDS IMPRESS AT WARWICK FARMWell-Bred Pair Give James Cummings First Winners Of New Season

Alizee ran second to subsequent Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) third Tulip (Pierro) in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Rosehill in March, and she showed her class to circle the field and quicken clear under a hand ride to score by three quarters of a length from Songlike (Your Song).

Trainer James Cummings was delighted with the daughter of Sepoy’s (Elusive Quality) victory, following on from a comfortable barrier trial success at Rosehill on 18 July, and she is likely to step back up in class in the hunt for a stakes breakthrough.

“Both horses are very promising, particularly Alizee, she was able to break 34 seconds for the last 600 metres which was a really commendable effort having had a fairly light, preliminary preparation going into her first up run,” Cummings told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“There seems to be a fair bit of improvement in her. I’m delighted, she is bound to take plenty of confidence from that win.

“She had an impressive, three-run two-year-old campaign that was a good foundation for her three-year-old season.

“With a strong black-type performance in the Magic Night against the Slipper placegetter, it would be no surprise if she was to take the next step this season and we are looking forward to giving her that opportunity.”

CrownBet rate the filly a $17 chance to follow in the footsteps of her half-brother Astern in the Golden Rose Stakes on 23 September, but her trainer has earmarked the Princess Series as a more likely route, starting with the Silver Shadow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) on 19 August.

“We have got colts for (the Golden Rose) but certainly with the sort of feel she is giving me the Princess Series could be a nice circuit for her to tack on to,” said Cummings.

Winning rider Schofield was similarly impressed with the performance of Alizee, whom he believes has a promising career ahead.

“She only had the one trial coming in and James just wanted me to be more conservative than bold early on. He told me she would be very strong late and that’s exactly what she was,” he said.

“Having had my first sit on her today she was quite fresh in the (yard). There is a lot to like about how she finished off and she relaxed so sweetly for me even though she was fresh.

“When I popped her to the outside I could really sense that she wanted to run. There is a lot in store for her.”

Cummings was equally pleased with the attitude shown by Piracy, with the Exceed And Excel (Danehill) gelding quickening into the lead from just off the pace at the 200 metres before fighting on well to open his account.

“He has turned his attitude right around. We saw the beginnings of that when he ran (second) first up at Hawkesbury a month ago, but he did head back to Kelvinside to continue to iron out some of his manners at the barriers and we have just treated him like a normal horse since,” Cummings told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“The horse has responded beautifully. He is a good looking son of Exceed And Excel and he is bred to continue to (progress).

Thursday 3 August 2017 Godolphin Three-Year-Olds Impress At Warwick Farm

“For now, we will just take him through his grades, but he has come a long way from his first start in the Breeders Plate. He looks ready to go on now, and he beat a field full of quality opposition (yesterday).”

Flemington Jump Out For Hartnell Cummings also gave a positive update on dual Group One winner

Hartnell (Authorized), who is set to take the first steps of his 2017-18 spring preparation in an 800-metre jump out at Flemington tomorrow.

The gelding is set to face Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Redkirk Warrior (Notnowcato) and Group Two-winning mare Heatherly (Lonhro) in the opening heat of the day.

The six-year-old has been off the track since running second to the champion Winx (Street Cry) in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Randwick in April, one of four occasions last season on which he chased the Chris Waller-trained mare home.

This spring, Hartnell will be campaigned exclusively in Melbourne, with the weight for age P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) on 19 August at Caulfield confirmed as his starting point.

“Kerrin McEvoy is just going to put him through his paces in a jump out as a preparation for his first up run on 19 August,” Cummings told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We are happy with him, he has got a good foundation and he just wants to be kept ticking over ahead of his return in the P B Lawrence, where we expect him to run well all things being equal.

“He had to chase home Winx a number of times too many last year, so the opportunity to campaign in Melbourne exclusively looks like an attractive option.

“Not to take for granted the strength of the opposition in Melbourne, but hopefully he will be at his best and can fight off the emerging four-year-olds.”

Le Romain Draws EightMultiple Group One winner Le Romain (Hard Spun) has drawn barrier eight for Saturday’s Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Randwick, with Glyn Schofield booked to take the ride. The Kris Lees-trained five-year-old gelding ran second to Tivaci (High Chaparral) in the All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Randwick in April at his last start and he will line up alongside the Peter and Paul Snowden-trained pair, Tattersall’s Tiara (Gr 1, 1350m) winner Tycoon Tara (Written Tycoon) and That’s A Good Idea (Flying Spur), who have drawn barriers one and seven respectively. Meanwhile, last start Randwick winner Boss Lane (Dubawi) has drawn barrier three for apprentice jockey Andrew Adkins.

Tough Task For Memes In MissileTrainer Jason Coyle is aware that in-form mare Memes (Time Thief) faces the stiffest challenge of her career when she takes takes her chance in the Missile Stakes at Randwick on Saturday. The four-year-old mare has won five of her last seven starts and placed in the other two and she has drawn barrier nine with jockey Rachel King booked to take the ride. "The plan was to win a maiden and hopefully graduate to metropolitan level," Coyle said. "She's obviously come on

leaps and bounds from that. When you've won five out of seven you've got to give them that opportunity to step up to a better level of racing. The biggest concern is stepping up to a weight-for-age Group Two race. It'd be nice if Kris Lees could scratch Le Romain to give us a fair chance." Click here to view the Randwick acceptances.

Frankel Colt To DebutTrainer Robbie Laing has high hopes for Frankel My Dear (Frankel) when he debuts over 1000 metres at Flemington on Saturday. The colt was purchased by Laing with long time clients Ray and Susie Montague at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $500,000 from the Cressfield draft, and Laing says he is contemplating aiming for some big spring targets with the son of champion racehorse Frankel (Galileo). "Frankel himself only won up to 2000 (metres) but this horse is steeped in stamina on the dam side," Laing said. "He's not a nuggety sprinting type. He's an elegant athletic sort of a horse. He's bred to stay but he's got a good turn of foot and goes into the race very fit.”

Arrowroot To Run At FlemingtonTrainer David Bourne rarely debuts a youngster at a city track, but he believes three-year-old

Morning Brief

Arrowroot (Red Arrow) is up to task. The unraced three-year-old will take his chance in the VRC Members Pavilion Handicap (1000m) at Flemington on Saturday and Bourne is hopeful he can put in a bold showing. "Sometimes you sort of shy away from Melbourne, but at this time of the year there may not be a lot of difference between city and country," Bourne told Racing.com. "From day dot, he showed natural ability and he trialled super the other day, he went great. He appears to have a really good cruising speed. He didn't jump out and lead them by five or anything. He just built the whole way and the best part of the trial was the last 50 metres. He looked so good at the end of it."

Spanish Reef Eyes Hat-TrickTrainer Ken Keys hopes Spanish Reef (Lope De Vega) can continue her good form as the four-year-old mare looks to stretch her winning sequence to three when she lines up in the Domain Handicap (2000m) at Flemington on Saturday. Spanish Reef goes into the race having won a Benchmark 70 (1600m) at Sandown second up on 28 June before posting a win in the Rivette Series Final (1600m) at Flemington on 8 July at her most recent start. "I think she's better suited over the 2000 metres and further,” said Keys. “I guess that's what she's bred to do and that's how it looked in the

Rivette. She looked to be quite strong on the line so you'd be hopeful that she could do the same again on Saturday." Click here to view the Flemington acceptances.

Lankan Rupee Gallops At SandownMultiple Group One winner Lankan Rupee (Redoute’s Choice) tuned up for his assault on Sunday’s rescheduled Bletchingly Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Sandown Lakeside with a gallop at the track yesterday. The Mick Price-trained gelding worked with stablemate and fellow Bletchingly Stakes entrant Duke Of Brunswick (Magnus) and jockey Craig Newitt, who will ride the gelding on Sunday, said he was pleased with the way Lankan Rupee quickened. "When we got around the 400 metre mark I picked him up pretty quick," Newitt said. "I was surprised how the old boy quickened down. On the line the other horse had the measure of me, but I reckon it was fitness that gave way in my bloke. If he gets a good gate and a pretty good run I think he'll be a really good chance, if not his fitness may give out.”

Yankee Rose To Resume In MemsieDual Group One winner Yankee Rose (All American) will resume in the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield on 2 September, after pleasing trainer David Vandyke in a gallop at the Gold Coast yesterday. Yankee Rose, who was one of six barrier trial winners for Vandyke yesterday, and he said she will now head to the Cranbourne trials on 21 August, before beginning her spring campaign, which contest the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m)

at Flemington on 16 September and the Underwood Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) at Caulfield on 1 October. "The programme fits in nicely no matter which way we go - the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate," Vandyke said. The trainer also confirmed that Dean Yendall will ride the mare during the spring.

Lawrence Return For Abbey MarieTrainer Mick Kent has said that Group One winner Abbey Marie (Redoute’s Choice) will kick off her four-year-old season in the P B Lawrence Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) at Caulfield on 19 August. The mare won the Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (Gr 1, 2000m) in 2016 and had a year off the track after the win due to injury. She was brought back last February and failed to make the frame in four starts. "I think we'll go to the Lawrence and then the Dato' Tan Chin Nam Stakes, which will be the fork in the road to decide whether we go to the either the Sunline Stakes against the mares or the JRA Cup," Kent told Racing.com. "She hasn't been beyond a mile since she won the Oaks and she's a horse that really needs 2000 metres.”

Saracino Close To ReturnGroup Two winner Saracino (Per Incanto) is close to making his first appearance for new trainer Michael Moroney. The four-year-old has been transferred from the Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman stable, for whom he won the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m), the Danehill Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Wellington Guineas (Gr 2, 1400m). “He'll probably kick off in an 1100 metre Listed race at Caulfield in

about three weeks' time,” Moroney told www.theinformant.co.nz. “He seems to have come up nicely. He's had a couple of gallops up here and he looks terrific.”

First City Win For CunninghamTrainer Clare Cunningham saddled her first city winner when Tenorino (Galileo) landed a Benchmark 71 (1400m) at Warwick Farm yesterday. Cunningham, who used to run Peter Moody's Sydney satellite stable, said she was thrilled with the win. "What a thrill. Thank you to (owners) Frank and Vicky Marino for sending me this horse,” said Cunningham. "Frank wanted the horse to go to a smaller stable so I'm very grateful he came to me.”

Bishop Rides City TrebleJockey Krystal Bishop rode her maiden metropolitan treble at Morphettville yesterday. Bishop got off the mark in the first race when on board the Greg Lesnikowski-trained Xaarian (Reaan) before guiding his stablemate Hilumiere (Artie Schiller) to victory two races later. The hat-trick was brought up on the Barry Brook-trained Sasun (Haradasun) in a Benchmark 64 (2025m). “It was super,” Bishop told Racing.com. “It’s a big thrill and to do it for trainers that really support me as well.”

Collett SuspendedJockey Jason Collett was suspended for 13 meetings after pleading guilty to careless riding for an incident that ended in Rachel King falling from her mount as it passed the winning post at Warwick Farm. The apprentice admitted to the offence after King’s mount Puppet Master

(Foxwedge) clipped the heels of Collett’s mount Al Mah Haha (Al Maher) when the colt shifted out after finishing second to Piracy (Exceed And Excel). Collett admitted he had shifted out when not sufficiently clear of Puppet Master but felt Al Mah Haha contributed to the collision. "He has come out quite abruptly," he said. Racing NSW stewards imposed a 20-meeting ban reduced to 13 meetings after his record, plea and the fact the suspension includes two Group meetings, was taken into account. He is banned until 2 September.

King Stands Down After Farm FallAfter the incident, Rachel King choose stand down from riding for the day. Although King walked away unscathed, and initially told stewards she was keen to take up her two remaining rides, she changed her mind after talking to Gai Waterhouse. "On Gai's recommendation, she didn't want me to keep riding for the rest of the day, just to make sure I'm right for the rest of the week," King said. "I was a little bit winded when I first got up but I feel fine.”

Schofield And Adams Cop BansJockeys Glyn Schofield and Josh Adams also picked up bans at Warwick Farm yesterday. Glyn Schofield was suspended for six meetings after pleading guilty to a careless riding charge stemming from interference caused in the early stages of race two while riding eventual winner Alizee (Sepoy). His ban starts on Sunday and he can resume riding on 18 August. Meanwhile, Adams looks set to miss four meetings between

9 August and 16 August after he was deemed to shift his mount, Sir Barb (Pins), when not sufficiently clear in race six at the meeting.

Rawiller BannedJockey Brad Rawiller will miss the first two metropolitan meetings of the season, after incurring a seven-meeting suspension at Warrnambool on Tuesday for his winning ride on Prince Ziggy (Monaco Consul) in the Melbourne Marriott Maiden Plate (1400m).

Vale Loses Cobalt Appeal Trainer Ricky Vale has lost an appeal against his conviction and the severity of a 12-month disqualification on three charges relating to cobalt. Queensland Racing Integrity Commission stewards charged Vale after cobalt above the allowable levels was detected in urine samples taken from three horses in March 2016. The prohibited substance dexamethasone was also detected in the urine sample of one of the horses, Prince Dan (Bel Danoro), taken at Rockhampton in February 2016, for which Vale was also fined $5,000. An inquiry which began in March was adjourned until July. When it resumed, stewards were satisfied all four charges could be sustained and Vale was found guilty. Vale is one of Queensland's most successful provincial trainers and has been operating on a stay. He will now take his case to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal with the case to be heard later this year.

Trial Date ChangesMonday’s trials due to take place at Cranbourne Training Complex have been rescheduled

while a set of jumps trials the following week have been transferred to another venue. The course proper at the training centre has been used throughout the winter to compensate for works being carried out to upgrade drainage on the inside grass track at the complex. Following a track inspection, Racing Victoria and the Cranbourne Turf Club (CTC), decided on a venue change for Monday's trials. A set of 11 trials will be held at Moe on Monday while 1000 metre and 1200 metre trials, exclusively for three-year-olds rated 70 and above and four-year-olds and older rated 80 or above, have been programmed for the Cranbourne racecourse the following day. Both Racing Victoria and the CTC will monitor the state of the turf training tracks before deciding if trials on 21 August go ahead.

New Look Management Team For AquisAquis Farm has appointed a new senior management team, including the appointment of Racing NSW executive Paul Weekes to the position of chief financial officer. Justin Fung will move from chief executive officer to managing director, with current deputy CEO Shane McGrath being appointed CEO. Nambok Intharangsy will remain as chief operating officer, and will be joined on the management team by Weekes. "We have built a significant operation over the last two years that now spans two properties in different states and more than 120 employees," said Aquis chairman Tony Fung "We need a management team with the breadth and depth of experience that will allow us to take the business to the next level.”

Radio Appeal Raises $30,000A radio appeal to raise funds for the National Jockeys Trust (NJT) has reached almost $30,000. The appeal was run by Brisbane-based RadioTAB which covers Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory and were joined on Monday by premier Brisbane trainer Tony Gollan and Sky Racing's Bernadette Cooper to head the appeal which passed its $25,000 target. The appeal was backed by wagering company UBET which pledged $10,000. There were also interviews with many racing industry participants who had been helped by the NJT, including Ben Saunders and Wade Clasohm, who were both left paralysed after a trackwork accident at Toowoomba.

New Zealand

Tarzino Trophy Start For GingernutsCo-trainers Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards have said they were pleased with dual Group One winner Gingernuts’ (Iffraaj) 1000 metre barrier trial at Te Teko yesterday and he will likely begin his campaign in the Tarzino Trophy (Gr 1, 1400m) at Hawke’s Bay on 2 September. The New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) winner was given an easy trial by Opie Bosson, where he eventually finished seventh. “He had a nice day out and he’s a lot bigger this year,” said Richards. “He’ll probably trial again and kick off in the Tarzino Trophy at Hawke’s Bay. He’ll be entered for the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, and whether he runs on the last two days at Hawke’s Bay before he goes, we’re not sure just yet.”

Volkstok'n'barrell To Run In Foxbridge Co-trainers Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs have said they plan to start multiple Group One winner Volkstok'n'barrell (Tavistock) in the Foxbridge Plate (Gr 2, 1200m) at Te Rapa on 19 August. The six-year-old gelding added a fourth Group One to his CV in his final race last season when he took out the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at Te Rapa in February. "Volkstok'n'barrell is looking at the Foxbridge Plate and that will then set him up for the last two Group Ones at Hawke's Bay," Logan said.

Wyndspelle To Join Kent YardMeanwhile, co-trainer Donna Logan also revealed yesterday that Group Two-winning four-year-old Wyndspelle (Iffraaj) will join Mick Kent’s Cranbourne stable. A winner of the Waikato Guineas (Gr 2, 2000m), Wyndspelle was most recently seen finishing sixth when resuming over 1200 metres at Ruakaka last month. But Logan said yesterday that connections have withdrawn the son of Iffraaj (Zafonic) from the Tarzino Trophy and will instead send him across the Tasman.

Racing Welcomes New LegislationThe governing bodies of the New Zealand racing industry are united in their support for the new Racing Amendment Bill, introduced by the minister for racing David Bennett. The New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB), New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing, Harness Racing New Zealand and Greyhound Racing New Zealand see the introduction of the bill as a major milestone in the process of bringing a welcome increase in funding to the industry. The proposed legislation addresses the rapid and broad growth of online betting and the loss of potential industry income to overseas bookmakers. “We are delighted to see the recommendations from the Offshore Betting Working Group progressing through to legislation,” said NZRB’s Glenda Hughes.

23 For Danehill Dancer

Here Comes When (7 g ex Quad’s Melody by Spinning World) ran out a shock winner of the Sussex Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Glorious Goodwood yesterday to provide the late Danehill Dancer (Danehill) with his 23rd Group One winner. The Andrew Balding-

trained seven-year-old, a dual Group Two winner as a four-year-old, narrowly got the better of odds-on favourite Ribchester (Iffraaj) in testing conditions to win by a neck, with Lightning Spear (Pivotal) a further three quarters of a length behind in third. Former champion sire Danehill Dancer died at the age of 24 earlier this year.

Battaash Heads 12 For King GeorgeThe progressive Charles Hills-trained three-year-old Battaash (Dark Angel) heads a field of 12 runners for the King George Stakes (Gr 2, 5f) at Glorious Goodwood tomorrow. The gelding ran out a wide-margin winner of the Coral Charge (Gr 3, 5f) at Sandown at his last start and will race from barrier one under Jim Crowley in the £312,100 feature. Profitable (Invincible Spirit) ran second in the King’s Stand Stakes (Gr 1, 5f) at his last start and is dropped in class, while admirable ten-year-old Take Cover (Singspiel) will bid to win the Group Two sprint for the third time since 2014. Here Comes When RACING POST

The seven-year-old Here Comes When (Danehill Dancer) caused an almighty shock when landing the £1,000,000 Sussex Stakes (Gr

1, 1m) under stamina-sapping conditions at Glorious Goodwood yesterday.

Persistent rain in the south of England turned the track from good to soft, and the mud-loving son of the late Danehill Dancer (Danehill) relished the testing surface to score at odds of 20/1.

The task ahead of triple Group One winner and odds-on favourite Ribchester (Iffraaj) looked to have been made more straightforward following Aidan O’Brien’s decision to scratch Churchill (Galileo) on account of the drastic change in going.

The Godolphin-raced colt towed the field along under William Buick, but he was swamped approaching the final furlong and it was Here Comes When who prevailed in a bunched finish under Jim Crowley, with Ribchester to his credit rallying gamely to finish a neck behind in second.

Qatar Racing-owned Lightning Spear (Pivotal) loomed up but could only finish third by a further three quarters of a length.

“He is here for a reason. We were obviously praying that we got the rain, and it has come in time,” winning trainer Andrew Balding said.

“He is a very decent horse on this sort of ground. If you look back through his form, he has won two Group Twos before.

“He deserved to be in the field, he was fourth in this race a couple of years ago on

ground quicker than ideal. It’s gone well, Jim gave him a great ride.”

Hampshire-based Balding said Heres Come When has returned this season in good form, winning the Hambleton Handicap (Listed, 1m) in good style at York at his penultimate start.

“I think he has come back this year in better form than ever. When he won at York, he was very impressive and he did it in a good time-figure,” he said.

“On this ground he is just stones better than he is on quicker ground.”

Richard Fahey was proud of the performance of Ribchester, who was only narrowly foiled in his bid to land three straight Group Ones.

“William (Buick) felt he was dropping away two (furlongs) down and he came back again,” Fahey said.

“They were extreme conditions out there. It’s not really for Flat horses to be racing - it’s ground for (jumps) horses. He’s run a mighty race and he showed good heart to nearly get back up again.”

Here Comes When (7 g Danehill Dancer - Quad’s Melody by Spinning World) has won eight and placed in six of his 29 career starts for prize money earnings of £840,133.

One of eight named foals out of the Group Three-winning mare Quad’s Melody (Spinning World), Here Comes When is a half-brother to three winners, including the progressive Melodic Motion (Nathaniel) who is among the favourites for today’s Lillie Langtry Stakes (Gr 3, 1m6f) at Goodwood.

His second dam Fab’s Melody (Devil’s Bag) produced seven winners from ten foals to race, including American Grade Two winner Bonapartiste (Kendor) and stakes-winning pair Sablier Noir (Marchand De Sable) and Go Got (Solid Illusion).

Here Comes When’s third dam is the Grade One placegetter Distinctive Moon (Distinctive), while this is also the family of Brazilian Grade Two winners The Buteler (Pioneering) and Wigmund (Pavillon).

Earlier in the day, the Karl Burke-trained Havana Grey (Havana Gold) made all the running against the stands rail to land the Molecomb Stakes (Gr 3, 5f) at Glorious Goodwood.

The progressive colt, who had won twice at Listed level previously, forged clear in the closing stages under P J McDonald to beat Invincible Army (Invincible Spirit) by a length and three quarters, with To Wafij (Kodiac) a nose further behind in third place.

By Tweenhills Stud first-season sire Havana Gold (Teofilo), the colt had only raced on ground described as good to firm prior to yesterday’s Group Three and Yorkshire-based Burke said the testing underfoot conditions gave him cause for concern.

“He has got a great turn of foot. He obviously shows that to better effect on faster ground and it was a bit of a concern there today,” Burke said.

“I walked the track earlier this morning and it was beautiful ground, I couldn’t believe how quick it was, and I thought if the rain could hold off it would have been ideal.

“But there is a lovely strip of ground on the rail and I was adamant that P J (McDonald) try and get on that.

“I was a bit worried after the first 50 yards. He looked as though he was just caught for toe which is unusual for him, but once he got into his rhythm he has done it well.”

last year, said Havana Grey would now step up in class for the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) at Deauville on 20 August.

“He was entered in the Morny this morning and the owners have alway been very keen to go for that so he will go there now,” he said.

Havana Grey (2 c Havana Gold - Blanc De Chine by Dark Angel) has now won four and placed in one of his six career starts, amassing prize money earnings of £76,221.

He is the first foal out of unraced Dark Angel (Acclamation) mare Blanc De Chine, whose half-sister Fast Act (Fast Company) finished placed in the 2014 Molecomb Stakes.

His winning second dam Nullarbor (Green Desert) has produced eight winners from 11 foals to race and is a half-sister to the 1996 Prix Eugene Adam (Gr 2, 2000m) winner Radevore (Generous).

Further back, his third dam is a half-sister to champion filly Al Bahathri (Blushing Groom), whose three stakes winners as a broodmare include dual Group One winner Haafhd (Alhaarth), while this is also the family of Group Two winner Richard Pankhurst (Raven’s Pass) and Group Three winners Lateen Sails (Elmaamul) and Crazy Horse (Sleeping Indian).

of Ryan Moore and quickened clear just over a furlong out to beat the previously unbeaten Dance Diva (Mayson) by five lengths, with Musical Art (Dutch Art) a further length and three quarters behind in third.

The daughter of the late Arch (Kris S) now looks likely to head to the Lowther Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at York on 24 August next up.

At Deauville on Sunday, the Shadwell-raced Tantheem (2 f Teofilo - Riqa by Dubawi) ran out a similarly impressive winner of the Prix De Cabourg (Gr 3, 1200m).

The daughter of Teofilo (Galileo) broke her maiden at the second attempt at Deauville in early July, and she took the step up in class in her stride when making all the running under Mickael Barzalona to secure an emphatic victory.

The filly was able to bag the stands rail shortly after the start and quickened clear to

win by three and a half lengths from Darkanna (Dark Angel). Mister Picnic (Penny’s Picnic) was another half a length away in third.

Trainer Freddy Head has earmarked the Prix Morny (Gr 1, 1200m) at Deauville on 20 August as her next target.

The Karl Burke-trained Raydiance (2 c Mayson - Iridescence by Dutch Art) won the Pat Eddery Stakes (Listed, 7f) in testing conditions at Ascot on Saturday afternoon.

The progressive colt travelled smoothly into contention under champion jockey Jim Crowley and knuckled down well to fend off Another Batt (Windsor Knot) by a neck, with Alba Power (Fast Company) a further two and a quarter lengths further behind in third place.

The promising Tajaanus (2 f Arcano - Rayaheen by Nayef) led in the final strides to win the Star Stakes (Listed, 7f) at Sandown last Thursday for trainer Richard Hannon.

The winner’s stablemate Billesdon Brook (Champs Elysees) looked sure to win when moving clear approaching the final furlong, but she began to tire and was run down by Tajaanus and Capomento (Casamento), who were separated by nose at the line, with Billesdon Brook a further neck behind in third.

Izzy Bizu (2 f Kodiac - Dame Hester by Diktat) won the Prix Six Perfections (Listed, 1400m) at Deauville on Saturday to give Yorkshire trainer Mark Johnston a stakes double on both sides of the English Channel.

The filly battled on well to beat Model (Mastercraftsman) by a short-neck under Ioritz Mendizabal, with Hergame (Motivator) just a short-head further behind in a close third.

The Mark Johnston-trained Nyaleti (2 f Arch - American Nova by Verglas) ran out a wide-margin winner of the Princess Margaret Stakes (Gr 3, 6f) at Ascot on Saturday.

The progressive filly had finished second to a pair of smart Aidan O’Brien-trained runners in both the Chesham Stakes (Listedtant, 7f) at Royal Ascot and the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes (Gr 2, 6f) at Newmarket at her last two starts and she proved far too strong for her six rivals last weekend

individual Group winners in Australia in 2016/17 were bred in Europe

The dual Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) winner Enable (3 f Nathaniel - Concentric by Sadler's Wells) ran out a hugely impressive winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot on Saturday.

The John Gosden-trained and Juddmonte Farms-raced and bred filly was sent off the well-backed 5/4 favourite and travelled powerfully throughout in the hands of Frankie Dettori on rain-softened ground as the Godolphin-raced

Maverick Wave (Elusive Quality) towed the field along.

Enable and Jack Hobbs (Halling) moved into a share of the lead at the top of the straight, but the brilliant Enable left that rival trailing with a sharp turn of foot and shot clear to beat Ulysses (Galileo), who moved strongly for a long way, with Idaho (Galileo) running on to take third.

Defending champion Highland Reel (Galileo) struggled on the testing ground and could only manage a fourth place finish under Ryan Moore.

The daughter of Nathaniel (Galileo), who won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes himself in 2011, is now likely to head to the Yorkshire Oaks (Gr 1, 1m4f) at York on 24 August, with the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr 1, 2400m) in October her end of season target.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained Roly Poly (3 f War Front - Misty For Me by Galileo) continued

on her upward curve when battling on gamely to win the Prix Rothschild (Gr 1, 1600m) at Deauville on Sunday.

The filly, who won the Falmouth Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Newmarket last month, set even fractions on the front end under regular jockey Ryan Moore.

She looked vulnerable approaching the final 200 metres, but she dug in bravely to repel a cluster of late challengers to win by a short-neck from Via Ravenna (Raven’s Pass), who was a short head in front of Siyoushake (Siyouni) in third.

The Jean-Claude Rouget-trained favourite and defending champion Qemah (Danehill Dancer) was another short neck away in fourth, having closed strongly up the stands rail from the tail of the field.

Vue Fantastique (3 f Motivator - Exit The Straight by Exit To Nowhere) took out the Prix de Psyche (Gr 3, 2000m) at Deauville on Saturday afternoon.

The Fabrice Chappet-trained filly, who ran second behind the Charlie Appleby-trained Sobetsu (Dubawi) in the Prix Saint-Alary (Gr 1, 2000m) at the same track in May, beat Listen In (Sea The Stars) by half a length, with Onthemoonagain (Cape Cross) just a short-neck further behind in a close-up third.

The previous day at Ascot, the William Haggas-trained On Her Toes (3 f Kodiac - Dancing Jest by Averti) ran out a game winner of the Valiant Stakes (Listed, 1m).

The Cheveley Park Stud-raced filly, who was also a Listed winner as a two-year-old, was well positioned in a steadily run race by veteran jockey Joe Fanning.

She was produced to lead around a furlong from home and had enough in hand to fend off the late challenge of Pirouette (Pivotal) by half a length, with the front-running Tisbutadream (Dream Ahead) keeping on well to finish a further neck behind in third place.

The Hans-Jurgen Groschel-trained Iquitos (5 h Adlerflug - Irika by Areion) returned to winning ways in the Grosser Dallmayr-Preis - Bayerisches Zuchtrennen (Gr 1, 2000m) at Munich on Sunday.

The five-year-old entire, who won last

season’s Grosser Preis von Baden (Gr 1, 2400m) at Baden Baden, was confidently ridden towards the tail of the field by jockey Daniele Porcu.

The son of Adlerflug (In The Wings) began to creep closer approaching the 500 metres, and once asked for his effort he picked up well to run down the Godolphin-raced three-year-old Best Solution (Kodiac) by a length and a half inside the final 200 metres.

Potemkin (New Approach), who ran third in the €155,000 feature 12 months ago, filled the same finishing position again for trainer Andreas Wohler.

Iquitos was campaigned overseas last year, running seventh in the Japan Cup (Gr 1, 2400m)

in November, and he could be considered for a Melbourne spring campaign.

Irish raider Success Days (5 h Jeremy - Malaica by Roi Gironde) made all the running to win the York Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2.5f) in determined fashion at York on Saturday.

The Ken Condon-trained entire was allowed to dictate at a steady tempo on the front end in the early stages, and jockey Shane Foley began to increase the pace as the seven-runner field approached the final three furlongs.

Dual American Grade One winner Mondialiste (Galileo) threw down a stiff challenge inside the final furlong, but Success Days held on bravely to win by a nose, with the patiently ridden Hathal (Speightstown) a further length and a quarter behind in a never nearer third.

ToursMurray Baker &Andrew Forsman

Eleonora (4 m Makfi – Sopra Tutto by Van Nistelrooy)

She is going to head to Melbourne and she might attack some of those mares’ races early on, rather than going to the big races, as she has been off the scene for a little while. We will work our way up to what will hopefully be the cup races. She was meant to go Sydney in the autumn and she won a Group Three race at Ellerslie and then pulled a muscle behind, so we had to pull the pin on that plan.

Francaletta (5 m High Chaparral – Snow Peak by Arazi)

We want to run her in the Foxbridge Plate first up, but she is only a lightly tried horse and she has no black type qualifications to get into the race, so that is the worry there. There is a bit of a wait and see if she can get in the Foxbridge Plate. We are going to try and pick our way through and get some black type with her.

| 16 | @anz_news anzbloodstocknews.com

Bonneval (4 m Makfi – Imposingly by Zabeel)

We are very happy with how she has come up so far and an obvious targets for an Oaks winner are the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, so that is what we are heading towards. She will probably go to Melbourne later in the month, all going well. The Memsie might be a bit sharp for her first up, so we might look at the Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes or the Makybe Diva. First up at a mile might be more suitable for her. You never know until you try them, but she has good size and scope, so I would be surprised if she didn’t make the step up from a three to a four-year-old.

Camino Rocoso (4 g Shocking – Our Centasea by Centaine)

He has been in work for a while now and he will stay in New Zealand for the spring. Hopefully he can end up in Australia in the autumn.

Coldplay (5 m Savabeel – Forty Two Below by O’Reilly)

She is going to stay in New Zealand, at least for her first few runs this preparation. Her first run back could be in the Foxbridge Plate, which is in two weeks, and then to the first couple of races at Hastings, the two Group Ones there. She trialled at Te Teko on Tuesday over 1000 metres and will go to the Foxbridge Plate after that.

Thursday 3 August 2017 S T A B L E T O U R S W I T H T I M R O W E

Cambridge-based Murray Baker and training partner Andrew Forsman enjoyed a tremendous past season, regaining the New Zealand trainers' premiership after notching up 107 winners for the season, with the biggest wins provided by their three-year-olds, dual Oaks winner Bonneval and Australian Derby winner Jon Snow. Those two, who are now four-year-olds, will spearhead the stable's spring team, with a number of high-class horses aimed at feature races in New Zealand and in Australia.

Highlad (4 g High Chaparral – My Lady’s Chamber by Arena)

His form was a bit indifferent in Melbourne last spring, but I think we rushed him a bit. He trialled up and won at Te Teko on Tuesday. He seems to best with the sting out of the ground, so he will kick around in New Zealand for the next couple of months until we know how he has come up before we make any plans with him.

Honey Rider (4 m Pins – Southern Heights by Align)

She is going to have a jump out next Monday. She didn’t have that much of a break as she raced into our winter. We will see how forward she is after the jump out and she could also run first up in the Foxbridge Plate.

Jon Snow (4 h Iffraaj – Orinda by O’Reilly)He will head over with Bonneval to

Melbourne at the same time and more than likely contest the Memsie Stakes first up. He can jump and put himself there, so 1400 metres will suit. We are very happy with him and he is big and strong and has strengthened up a lot since his last preparation.

Lizzie L'Amour (5 m Zabeel – Sabia by Sadler’s Wells)

She is a Zabeel mare who is a Group One weight for age winner, so we are going to send her to Melbourne with the others and try and sneak her into a Caulfield Cup or something like that. She is a Group Three winner over 2400 metres and, being by Zabeel, she can stay a bit.

Luna Rossa (4 m Written Tycoon – Wild Promises by More Than Ready)

She will stay in New Zealand for her first few runs in a similar manner to Coldplay, kicking off in the Foxbridge Plate.

Mime (5 m Mastercraftsman – Maidjeu by Montjeu)

She is going to be aimed at the last two Group One races at Hastings, the mile and the 2000 metre race, and then if she is going well enough in those races, then we can look at Melbourne later on.

Nicoletta (4 m Savabeel – Celtic Crown by Doneraile Court)

We gave her a bit of a longer break just to give her time to mature and she will probably

target races later in the season and then maybe look at Australia in the autumn.

Stolen Dance (6 m Alamosa – Songbird by Black Minnaloushe)

She will probably go first up into the 1400 metre Group One race at Hastings at the end of the month. The key for her is to try and win one more race with her before she goes to stud this season.

We have got the biggest and best yearlings we have had through. Most of ours aren’t really precocious types of two-year-olds, so they have all done their little bit of education and are out having a break now, so we won’t be getting anything up and running too early. We tend to aim towards the autumn with our two-year-olds.

In an otherwise competitive season, the juveniles of 2016-17 failed to earn a Timeform rating of 120 for only the second time this century.

The ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) winner Invader (Snitzel) [119] and the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) [119] finished the season sharing top billing on the Timeform two-year-old ladder.

With the table looking similar to 2013-14 when Mossfun (Mossman) [119], Earthquake (Exceed And Excel) [119] and Rubick (Encosta De Lago) [119] shared top billing - the only time this century the top juvenile was not rated higher than 119.

But in defence of this year’s stock was the fact that they had to contend with heavy tracks over the Sydney Autumn Carnival, affecting the Golden Slipper Stakes, ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes and the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m).

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained colt Invader raced seven times during the season and as well as his Sires’ Produce Stakes success, he was second in the Champagne Stakes.

While the Gary Portelli-trained filly She Will Reign had five starts for four wins, which included a brilliant win in the Inglis Nursery Stakes (RL, 1000m) at Randwick.

Not surprisingly, the highest rated horse of the season was the champion mare Winx (Street Cry) [134] who clearly headed the five-year-old and older Timeform table.

Seemingly invincible since winning the Sunshine Coast Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) in May 2015, Winx has now taken her winning sequence to 17, which includes the W S Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) of 2015 and 2016.

She reached a new level with a Timeform figure of 133p in winning the Cox Plate last year but finished the season with new peak rating of 134 in beating a strong field in this year’s George Ryder Stakes (Gr 1, 1500m) at Rosehill.

Only one horse has achieved a rating higher

than Winx this century, the unbeaten champion sprinting mare Black Caviar (Bel Esprit) [136] who headed the Timeform five-year-old and older table in 2011-12.

Other seasonal leaders for 2016-17 were Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) [127] who headed the three-year-old table and Humidor (Teofilo) [125+] and Le Romain (Hard Spun) [125] who shared top ranking in the four-year-old table.

In the final race meeting of the season in Sydney on Saturday, the Kim Waugh-trained gelding Shiraz (Zariz) [109] returned to the winner’s list after almost two years in taking out the Winter Challenge (Listed, 1500m) at Rosehill.

After enjoying a good trip just behind the leaders, Shiraz, ridden by Jason Collett, got along the rails to take the lead and then fought back to score by a short head from the Gary Moore-trained Classic Uniform (Al Maher) [109].

The recent Winter Stakes (Listed, 1400m) winner at Rosehill, Slightly Sweet (Charge Forward) [101] was just over a length further back in third place.

It was Shiraz’s first win since the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Randwick in September 2015 and he returned a Timeform figure of 109, which was his highest since running to 110 when a close-up sixth in the Eye Liner Stakes (Listed, 1350m) at Ipswich in June.

Shiraz is the equal highest winner of the Winter Challenge with Foreteller (Dansili) [113] in 2011, while last year’s winner Marenostro (Duelled) rating 108, suggesting Shiraz is close to par for winners of the race, which commenced in 2011.

The runner-up Classic Uniform ran to a new career-peak of 109, three pounds above his previous best, while third-placed Slightly Sweet maintained her form by rating 101, two pounds above her Winter Stakes success.

The last juvenile race of the season saw the Chris Waller-trained colt D’Argento (So You Think) [103] record his second win in as many starts with a smart performance in taking out the two-year-old handicap (1500m).

After being back in sixth place, D’Argento had a good battle over the closing stages before getting the upper hand of the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained colt Runaway (Manhattan Rain) [101] to score by a neck.

Running to 89p when winning a two-year-old maiden (1200m) on debut at Newcastle on 15 July, D’Argento advanced his rating significantly on Saturday, returning a Timeform figure of 103.

The son of So You Think (High Chaparral) looks to have plenty of improvement to come especially over longer distances and is one to keep an eye on going into his three-year-old season.

The second-placed Runaway, also lightly raced, fought gamely after leading and he too looks set for better things running to 101, eight pounds above his previous best.

In the three-year-old plate (1400m), his Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained stablemate Arbeitsam (Snitzel) [106] continued his strong form with a good win looks a horse on the rise.

Taken straight to the lead by Tim Clark, Arbeitsam fought back well when challenged to defeat the Gerald Ryan-trained The Pharaoh (Snitzel) [95] by score by a length.

Arbeitsam conceded 3.5 kilograms to the runner-up and he returned a new career peak Timeform figure of 106, three pounds above his previous best rating.

With only 11 starts to his name and now a four-year-old Arbeitsam appears a versatile gelding going forward in what looked a competitive and relatively strong three-year-old race for this time of the year.

Thursday 3 August 2017

OverviewDual Group One winner Palentino (Teofilo) will stand at Sun Stud in

Victoria for the 2017 breeding season. The Darren Weir-trained four-year-old ended his career with a record

of five wins and three seconds from 18 starts including the Australian Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) last season and the Makybe Diva Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) in September.

Palentino continued his consistent career by winning the Blamey Stakes (Gr 2, 1600m) at Flemington on 18 March, ensuring the entire won a stakes race in every preparation.

An $85,000 Magic Millions Tasmanian Yearling Sale purchase by his trainer in 2014 from the Macleay Thoroughbred Stud draft, Palentino possessed an excellent conformation, according to Weir.

“He is just such a striking individual,” Weir said. “From the moment I laid eyes on him he impressed me: a great temperament and he just kept rising to the occasion.”

Out of winning Palace Music (The Minstrel) mare Palatine Hill, who is a half-sister to Listed winners Sublimity (Testa Rossa) and Rather Grand (Grand Lodge), Palentino is by Darley shuttle stallion Teofilo (Galileo).

Sun Stud secured a 50 per cent share in Palentino after the then three-year-old won the Australian Guineas at Flemington in March 2016.

He retired with prize money totalling $1,305,110.“In the spring he then won the Makybe Diva and won the Blamey

Stakes this prep,” Sun Stud operations manager David Grant said.

“He will be our headline new stallion in Victoria this year. A lot of good judges rate milers as the best stallions and that’s why Guineas winners are sought after around the world.”

Palentino will stand for an introductory fee of $17,600 (inc GST).

Last-start Flemington winner Super Haze looks a good buy for Louis Le Métayer’s Astute Bloodstock (FBAA).

And if trainer Tony McEvoy is any judge, the Banjo Paterson Final (2600m) won’t be the Irish import’s last victory at headquarters. “We thought a fair bit of this horse but he lost his way early this year,” McEvoy said. “He loves the galloping room at Flemington and was unlucky not to win a race on Melbourne Cup day last year.”

Le Métayer bought Super Haze as a foal at an Arqana Deauville Sale in December 2012. He was acting on behalf of a syndicate that includes Nigel Austin (Cotton On Flyers), Wayne Mitchell (Pipeliner Bloodstock) & Anthony Mithen (Rosemont Stud).

Super Haze (High Chaparral – Silver Haze by Pivotal) was bred and sold by Haras d’Etreham for €62,000 (AUD 76,575). His dam is a half-sister to German-bred Seville (Galileo) who was runner-up in the 2011 Irish Derby prior to emigrating out here to win a G1 Metropolitan for Lloyd Williams.

Calypso Bay was another High Chaparral in Le

Métayer’s sights at the 2014 NZB Karaka yearling

sale. Purchased for Queensland-based owners

Ron & Judy Wanless, he won at Canterbury last

month and the dominance of that victory indicates

he has a very bright future.

Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) farewelled one Group 1 winner and celebrated another elite galloper a world away this month.

In California, Craig & McCall Rounsefell remembered the highs and lows with iron-horse Obviously who has bowed out after an amazing career. The Irish-bred son of Choisir won his first Group 1 in the 2013 Shoemaker Mile when trained by McCall’s father Mike Mitchell.

After Mitchell’s death, assistant-trainer Phil D’Amato took over the reins and prepared him to win last year’s G1 Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Santa Anita. “Not a sad day but a happy one

as the horse who has done so much for our family,” the couple tweeted. “He’s a warrior and will live out his days a happy horse. That’s what he deserves.”

Obviously was purchased by Rounsefell for 130,000 guineas at the 2011 Tattersalls October Sale and he banked over $2.30 million for owners Joe Scardino & Tony Fanticola.

“I had him 90% fit and almost ready to go, but we found some bone bruising coming out of his last work,” D’Amato confirmed. “It’s a very minor injury but, at his age, we decided it’s time.”

In Western Australia, Boomer buy Scales of Justice is on track to defend his G1 Railway Stakes crown at Ascot on Saturday, November 25.

Scales of Justice (Not A Single Doubt) signed off a short winter campaign with Group 3 victories in the Hyperion Stakes (1600m) & Strickland Stakes (2000m) at Belmont. “He runs great sectionals and has such a tremendous cruising speed,” trainer Lindsey Smith explained. “Melbourne is also on the agenda after our summer carnival.”

Smith mentioned the G1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington in March as a viable target over east. He won the 2002 Australian Cup with Old Comrade.

Rounsefell snapped up Scales of Justice for $180,000 from the Millford Thoroughbreds draft at the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale. The 4yo gelding has earned over $1.35 million for owners Chris Wells & Bill Andrews with his best seasons still ahead.

Winter winners have kept the till ticking over for Bill Mitchell Bloodstock (FBAA) while waiting for spring prospect Curdled to return in the new season.

His yearling buys Invincible Knight (I Am Invincible) and Special Missile (Smart Missile) both scored stylish wins for the Chung family and trainer John Thompson.

Invincible Knight came from the back of a capacity field to blitz a Rosehill Benchmark 78 with 61kg. Mitchell bought him for $140,000 at

the 2014 Inglis Melbourne Premier Sale and his rise through the ranks began this time last year with a hat-trick at Kembla Grange, Wagga and Canterbury.

Special Missile won a Warwick Farm maiden to pay the first instalment of a $180,000 price-tag at the 2015 Gold Coast Magic Millions. “He’s been knocking on the door,” Thompson explained. “He's been getting that little bit better each run and hopefully this gives him a bit of confidence.”

While Thompson’s stablemates were saluting, Mitchell was examining the spring carnivals in his role as racing manager at Segenhoe Thoroughbreds. The Scone stud and its Randwick stables have an exciting team in search of 3yo scalps including last-start stakes winner Curdled.

“He’s a progressive type and should develop into a better horse with a spell,” Mitchell predicted after the LR Winning Edge Stakes at Doomben. “We’ve put him away and look for the right races next season.”

Analysis: The Godolphin-raced three-year-old Piracy followed his promising first up second in a 2YO Maiden (1000m) at Hawkesbury on 6 July with his first win in four starts here. He began well, settled nicely in fourth place on the rails, before getting through to challenge on straightening. He got to the front at the 100 metres and then held on gamely to score well, albeit in a photo. Chris Waller-trained colt Al Mah Haha settled near last in the seven-horse field, got along the rails at the home turn, challenged at the 100 metres and then battled on well for a close second in a nice effort at only his second race start.

Then followed: State Of Play (AUS), Magic Moment (AUS), Sweet Deal (AUS), Kaffka (AUS), Milanese Girl (AUS), Take Time To Chill (AUS) & Miss Jenny (AUS), last.

Analysis: Godolphin-raced filly Alizee, who had shown promise in stakes races at her last two runs, broke through here for her first win in four starts with a very smart, first up effort here. She settled in sixth place (wide with cover) before moving up (deep) at the home turn. She then came with a strong run, hit the front at the 50 metres and went on to score, seemingly with plenty in hand. She looks a very smart filly with a bright future. The promising Bjorn Baker-trained filly Songlike was smartly away, went straight to the front and travelled really well. She held a nice advantage at the 200 metres and then fought well for a good second, just finding the really talented winner a bit too good.
