Exciting Group One-winning three-year-old Flying Artie (Artie Schiller) has matured since the spring and is ready to take on older horses in

Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington, according to trainer Mick Price’s bloodstock manager Luke Wilkinson.

The Mick Price-trained colt, a winner of the Coolmore Stud Stakes (registered as Ascot Vale Stakes) (Gr 1, 1200m) during the spring, is one of 16 nominations for Saturday’s Group One sprint.

Placed in the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) as a two-year-old, Flying Artie produced two dominant stakes victories in a restricted spring campaign and connections believe the light workload will pay dividends this preparation.

Flying Artie finished second to fellow Black Caviar Lightning Stakes contender Heatherly (Lonhro) in an 800 metre barrier trial on 7 February on a Heavy 8 track at Cranbourne when ridden by Damien Oliver, who replaces Hugh Bowman.

Bowman rode the colt to victory in the Coolmore Stud Stakes when Oliver was suspended.

“Flying Artie has had a great week on the training track and it’s all systems go for this Saturday,” Wilkinson told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“We are fairly confident in a good form race with lots of horses with good chances and we couldn’t be happier with the horse.

“He has improved since the Coolmore Stud Stakes. He’s come back as a bigger and stronger version of what we had last year.”

Newgate Farm and China Horse Club are part of a syndicate who has bought into the stallion prospect and the idea of Flying Artie campaigning in the UK prior to his retirement has been floated in a bid to enhance is stud value.

Flying Artie was taken to Sandown yesterday to gallop over 800 metres, sitting off stablemate Katsuro (I Am Invincible), with Oliver in the saddle and was timed to run 50 seconds for the work out.

Meanwhile, the Peter Gelagotis-trained Illustrious Lad (I Am Invincible), a winner of the Linlithgow Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Flemington on 29 October, will be tested at Group One level for the first time in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes.

The five-year-old gelding, a winner of nine of his 26 race starts, finished third behind Heatherly and Flying Artie in last week’s Cranbourne barrier trial to prepare for his autumn comeback.

"Each preparation he's matured and looking at him this time and judging on the way he's trialled I think he's taken the next step," Gelagotis told Racing.com.

"It was heart-warming to see the way he trucked up and went to the line in his trial at Cranbourne the other day.

"Anthony (Darmanin) kept him out of trouble out wide and the two horses inside of him (Heatherly and Flying Artie) shaded him by a couple of lengths but he was untested and they were asked for a little bit of an effort.”

The Michael, Wayne and John Hawkes-trained Star Turn (Star Witness), who shares favouritism at $4.50 with Flying Artie, tuned up for his tilt in Saturday’s Group One by winning a Rosehill barrier trial over 900 metres on 31 January, defeating Tango Rain (Manhattan Rain) by half a length with multiple Group One winner Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) another length and a half back in third.

Star Turn will also be resuming on Saturday having not been seen since running third by Flying Artie in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at Flemington last spring.

On the next line of betting at $5.50 is another resuming colt, the lightly raced four-year-old Spieth (Thorn Park), who will be making his comeback having not been sighted since being narrowly defeated by

Malaguerra (Magnus) in the Darley Classic (registered as VRC Sprint) (Gr 1, 1200m) at Flemington at his first Group One attempt in November.

The Bryce Heys-trained entire, who took out the Tatts Lightning Handicap (Listed, 1100m) on 15 October, left for Melbourne last night and he is, according to Heys, in good shape ahead of his run in Saturday’s $750,000 contest.

Terravista (Captain Rio), who will be ridden by Corey Brown, was beaten in the final stride by Chautauqua (Encosta De Lago) last year in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, is an $11 chance as is The Quarterback (Street Boss), last year's Newmarket Handicap (Gr 1, 1200m) winner, who has won two of his past three starts up the Flemington straight.

Trainer Robbie Laing was pleased with Missrock (Fastnet Rock) when she took part in a 600 metre gallop yesterday ahead her run in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes. Missrock, who won the Percy Sykes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Randwick last April, will have first time winkers applied with jockey Craig Williams booked to take the ride.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock (Danehill) was accompanied in her gallop by stakes-placed stablemate So Si Bon (So You Think), who is nominated for Saturday’s C S Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Flemington, but Laing has said he is now leaning towards starting the three-year-old colt in the 1200 metre handicap on the same card instead.

Extreme Choice Wins Caulfield Jump Out

Meanwhile, Flying Artie’s dual Group One-winning stablemate Extreme Choice (Not A Single Doubt) won a jump out at Caulfield yesterday in preparation for his first up tilt at the Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) on 25 February.

Ridden by regular jockey Craig Newitt, Extreme Choice won the jump out, defeating the John Sadler-trained Group Three winner Charmed Harmony (Hussonet).

“It was perfect and he’s ready to go now,” Wilkinson told ANZ Bloodstock News of Extreme Choice’s jump out.

“He jumped and settled handy to the speed with Charmed Harmony and with about 300 metres to go Craig asked him to extend and he put a length on Charmed Harmony and then cruised to the line in the last 50 metres.”

Wilkinson said the Oakleigh Plate was an ideal race for Extreme Choice to resume in after finishing fifth in the Coolmore Stud Stakes at his last start behind Flying Artie.

“Extreme Choice went shockingly down the straight and he’s better around the turn, the Oakleigh Plate is on his home track and it’s probably the perfect race for him,” he said.

She Will Reign Works StronglyGolden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) favourite She Will Reign (Manhattan Rain) galloped strongly with a partner at Warwick Farm yesterday. The undefeated juvenile filly galloped over 1000 metres with well-performed stablemate Straturbo (Stratum) ahead of Saturday’s Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Rosehill, her first start since winning the Inglis Nursery (RL, 1000m) last December. "Her work was fantastic this morning," said trainer Gary Portelli. "It was unbelievable work to watch. She's the real deal. "Her work was fantastic this morning," Portelli told Racing.com. "It was unbelievable work to watch. She's the real deal. It was just nice controlled work over 1000 metres with Straturbo.”

Trip A Concern For KhanCo-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden have voiced concerns about the 1100 metre trip when Breeders’ Plate (Listed, 1000m) winner Khan (Exceed And Excel) resumes in Saturday’s Silver Slipper Stakes at Rosehill. The two-year-old colt has not been seen since taking out the Randwick Listed race in October and Peter Snowden has said he feels the colt would benefit from a slightly longer trip. Khan, who was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock at last year’s Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $260,000 from the Glenlogan Park draft, is on the second line of betting with CrownBet, behind She Will Reign, at odds of $5.50 to land the Group Two.

Millie Fox First Up For Heavens AboveTrainer Tim Martin has his eyes set on Group One races for dual Group Three winner Heavens Above (Street Cry) this campaign, which starts in the Millie Fox Stakes (Gr 2, 1300m) at Rosehill on Saturday. "She hasn't had a barrier

trial but she's had a course proper gallop at Rosehill this morning," Martin said yesterday. "She will obviously improve on what she does on Saturday but it's a nice race to kick her off in and fits in well with three weeks to the Coolmore Classic. She's entered for the Doncaster and will be nominated for the Queen Of The Turf again.” Click here to view the Rosehill weights.

McEvoy Books Brown For Time AwaitsCorey Brown will ride the Tony McEvoy-trained Time Awaits (Nicconi) in Saturday’s Talindert Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Flemington. The two-year-old filly, a debut winner at Morphettville Parks last October, resumed with a closing one and a half lengths second in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield on 4 February, a race won by Formality (Fastnet Rock). Brown, who recently returned to Sydney after more than three years riding in Singapore, replaces Dwayne Dunn on Time Awaits.

No Decision On Fell Swoop RaceTrainer Matthew Dale is still undecided whether Group Two winner Fell Swoop (Not A Single Doubt) will run in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) or wait until next Saturday’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) at Caulfield. The five-year-old, who pleased Dale in a racecourse gallop at Canberra today, will carry top weight of 58 kilograms in next week’s Caulfield race. The five-year-old, who was purchased for $45,000 at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the Dartbrook Downs draft, has finished runner-up in three Group Ones, including the Manikato Stakes (Gr 1, 1100m) on his second start last preparation.

Nolen To Ride JukeboxLuke Nolen has been confirmed as the rider of Blue DIamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) contender Jukebox (Snitzel). The undefeated Ciaron Maher-trained colt was ridden by Craig

Williams at his two starts to date, but the rider has elected to partner the Lindsay Park-trained Catchy (Fastnet Rock) in the Group One juvenile race. Meanwhile, jockey Regan Bayliss has been booked to ride the Lindsay Park-trained Wait For No One (Lonhro) and Kerrin McEvoy will take the ride on the Tony McEvoy-trained Azazel (Snitzel).

Derby Hopeful Anaheim To Run At SandownLightly raced stayer Anaheim (Fastnet Rock), a last start winner of the Connoisseur Stakes (Listed, 1800m), will resume at the Sandown Lakeside today with co-trainer Trent Busuttin ultimately hoping to run the colt in the Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Randwick on 1 April. Busuttin, who trains in partnership with Natalie Young, has Anaheim entered for a 1400 metre race today with Noel Callow taking the ride. “Obviously it’s short of his best distance tomorrow but we’ll get a line on where we’re heading, depending on how hard he’s hitting the line. We’re pleased with the way he’s going,” Busuttin said.

Miss Wahoo Seeking Blue Diamond RunBlue Diamond Stakes-nominated filly Miss Wahoo (Master Of Design), who was placed on debut in the Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield last October, could make it up the ballot order and gain a start if she can win at Sandown Lakeside today. The Tony McEvoy-trained filly, who finished sixth in the Blue Diamond Preview (F) (Gr 3, 1000m) last start, will run over 1200 metres today against her own age with Dwayne Dunn taking the ride. will make her debut in a two-year-old maiden over 1000 metres at Randwick today. The John O’Shea-trained juvenile won her only barrier trial at Rosehill over 900 metres on 31 January when successful by one and a half lengths. Christian Reith will ride Alizee, who replaces the injured James Doyle. The Anthony Cummings-trained Ten Carat (Fastnet Rock) is the only two-year-old with race experience in the field of nine, having finished last in the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) at Flemington on 5 November. Click here to view the Randwick fields.

Nikitas Wins Rosehill TrialGroup Two-placed colt Nikitas (Snitzel), a Chris Waller-trained three-year-old who failed first up over 1400m at Randwick on 4 February, was given a solid barrier trial over 1030 metres in heat one yesterday at Rosehill. Ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, Nikitas led throughout to win by one and three quarter lengths over stablemate Chandana (High Chaparral) in 1:01.30 seconds. In heat four, Waller-trained Group Two winner Mackintosh (Pins) was given a very easy time back in the field under Hugh Bowman in his first barrier trial this campaign.

Single Bullet Second In TrialTwo-year-old colt Single Bullet (Not A Single Doubt), who finished second in heat eight at the Rosehill barrier trials yesterday over 900 metres, is set to resume in the Black Opal Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Canberra on 5 March. The Gary Portelli-trained Single Bullet, who was runner up at two starts in December and January, settled back in the field for jockey Jason Collett before running home to finish second behind the Bjorn Baker-trained Paper Trade (Written Tycoon).

Songlike Impresses At TrialsTrainer Bjorn Baker, who won three barrier trials at Rosehill yesterday, including promising two-year-old filly Songlike (Your Song) in heat five yesterday over 900 metres. A $50,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast National Yearling Sale purchase, Songlike settled third on the fence for jockey Jason Collett before sprinting quickly to win by two lengths in 53.60 seconds. Songlike finished second to She Will Reign over 808

metres at Warwick Farm in her first barrier trial on 6 February. Click here to view the Rosehill barrier trial replays.

Lord Van Percy Targets Auckland CupThe Darren Weir-trained Lord Van Percy (Sir Percy) will run in Friday night’s Torney Night Cup (Listed, 2500m) at Moonee Valley with Weir hoping he can run well and earn himself a start in the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) on 11 March. The seven-year-old import was last seen running fourth in the Mal Seccull Handicap (2400m) at Caulfield on 4 February and Weir is confident he can run well on Friday. "They are all pretty keen for the horse to go over," Weir's racing manager Jeremy Rogers told Racing.com. "He's running over 2500 metres on Friday night and if he goes alright then it's on."

Frolic To Magic NightMonday’s Inglis 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m) winner Frolic (Husson) will now be aimed at a possible tilt in the Magic Night Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) at Rosehill. The Michael Freedman-trained two-year-old filly, who was purchased for $100,000 by Blue Sky Bloodstock for owners John and Tom Kelly at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale from the Vinery Stud draft, ran second on her first two career starts will also have the Randwick carnival among her long term plans.

Pearls Dies After Race FallGodolphin-owned four-year-old Pearls (Exceed And Excel), a Group Two-winning mare who was a sister to stallion Helmet and a three-quarter sister to fellow Darley sire Epaulette (Commands), has died as a result of a race fall at Randwick on Monday. The John O’Shea-trained Pearls, who won the Tea Rose Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) as a three-year-old, was euthanised as result of multiple shoulder fractures sustained in the Triscay Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) when ridden by James Doyle.

Doyle Out Injured With Fractured WristJames Doyle, who fell from Pearls in the Triscay Stakes at Randwick on Monday, will be out for at least four weeks after suffering a hairline fracture in his wrist. Godolphin will not fly in a replacement for Doyle from the UK while

he recovers, instead the Australian-based operation will use local jockeys. "I've always said, even when we brought James Doyle down here, that there is a lot of talent in the local ranks here which I'm sure we'll be pretty happy to use," Godolphin managing director Henry Plumptre said.

Newitt Suspended At SaleJockey Craig Newitt was yesterday suspended for six days at Sale yesterday, with the Victorian rider set to miss the ride on Counterattack (Redoute’s Choice) in Saturday’s Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at Flemington. Newitt was booked to ride the Chris Waller-trained four-year-old entire in Saturday’s Group One race, but his suspension starts at midnight tonight and can return to race riding on 22 February.

New Zealand

Fitter Sacred Elixir To Run At EllerslieTrainer Tony Pike expects his New Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) hope Sacred Elixir (Pour Moi) to build on his first up fourth in the Karaka 3YO Mile (RL, 1600m) when he runs in Saturday’s Avondale Guineas (Gr 2, 2100m) at Ellerslie. The three-year-old won the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) as a two-year-old and ran second behind Prized Icon (More Than Ready) in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) on 29 October. “He will be a lot more forward on Saturday,” said Pike. “He’s going to improve again with another run and the draws will play a part, but he shouldn’t be far away.”

Oaks Placed Strada Cavallo On Group One PathNew Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) placegetter Strada Cavallo (Alamosa) will run in an open handicap over 1500 metres with a tilt at the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) at Te Aroha on 8 April on the mare’s long term agenda. The Graham Richardson-trained four-year-old was last seen winning over 1300 metres at Pukekohe Park having been unsuccessful in four starts this season. “She’s doing well and she’s going to run in the open 1500 at Ellerslie,” said Richardson.

Group Two Next For Florence JeanThe John Morrell-trained Florence Jean (Pins) will step into Group company for the first time when she runs in Matamata Breeders’ Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) on 25 February after Morell was impressed with her winning debut over 1000 metres at Ruakaka last month. “I gave her about three weeks off after Ruakaka. The short spell has been good for her, she looks a million dollars,” said Morell. “It’s a step up, but she deserves a crack at black type. You have to give them a shot. The extra distance should not be a problem and she works left handed at Te Rapa, so Matamata should be okay too. But having said that, I think she prefers the right handed way of going.”

Penthathlon To Resume In Taranaki CupGroup Two placegetter Pentathlon (Pentire) will resume in Saturday’s Taranaki Cup (Gr 3, 1800m) at Pukekura with trainer John Wheeler aiming to tackle the Auckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Ellerslie on 11 March. The five-year-old gelding, who has not been seen since running ninth in the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) at Flemington in November, will be ridden by jockey Lisa Allpress on Saturday. “He had a month off after that and he’s come back well,” Wheeler said. “He’s had a couple of jump-outs and he’s going along nicely. I’m pretty happy. There’s obviously quite a bit of improvement in him, but he normally goes a nice race fresh.”

Asia

Moore Pleased With Rapper DragonTrainer John Moore is pleased with the condition of Rapper Dragon (Street Boss) as

he prepares the gelding for his tilt in Sunday’s Hong Kong Classic Cup (Gr 1, 1800m) at Sha Tin. The four-year-old, who was most recently seen taking out the Hong Kong Classic Mile (Listed, 1600m) on 22 January, is one of three entries for Moore in the Group One the others are Australian Group One winner Eagle Way (More Than Ready) and Beauty Generation (Road To Rock). “I couldn’t be happier with these four-year-olds,” the trainer said. “I have a very talented bunch of horses going into these big races now, with a new brigade ready to take over from the old brigade.”

No Dubai Trip For Helene ParagonA planned to trip to Dubai for Helene Paragon (Polan) has been shelved with trainer John Moore saying that connections are instead planning to tackle top-class domestic races, with the Champions Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) at Sha Tin on 7 May on the entire’s long term agenda. A run in the Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) had been the plan for the last start Stewards’ Cup (Gr 1, 1600m) winner. “Helene Paragon isn’t going anywhere now,” he said. “We’d looked at going to Dubai for the turf race over 1800 metres but the owner wants to focus on the big races here in Hong Kong this season with the target being the Champions Mile.” Dundonnell Ready For Super Saturday RunTrainer Caspar Fownes will now aim Dundonnell (First Defence) at the Mahab Al Shimaal (Gr 3, 1200m) at Meydan on 4 March after he was impressed with the seven-year-old’s second place effort in the over course and distance on Saturday. Provided the gelding runs well in the

Group Three, Fownes has said he could then be aimed for a tilt in the Golden Shaheen (Gr 1, 1200m) on 25 March, Dubai Cup World Cup night. “I’d like to see him put another race like that together before we look at the Golden Shaheen because that track is tricky. If you reverse the draw and get Dundonnell on the rail, like the winner was last Saturday, it’s a different ball game.”

Duric SuspendedSingapore-based jockey Vlad Duric picked up a two day careless riding suspension after it was deemed he allowed his mount Louey Veloce (No Excuse Needed) to shift outwards when there was not enough room, causing interference to Cote De Nuits (Stravinsky) in a race at Singapore on Sunday. Duric, who pleaded guilty to the charge, started his ban on Monday and will not be available to ride in Sunday’s meeting.

International

Lucky Pulpit GoneLucky Pulpit (Pulpit), sire of multiple Grade One winner California Chrome, died on Monday at the age of 16, after suffering a heart attack while covering a mare at Harris Farms in California. From seven crops of racing age he sired 148 winners, with his sole Grade/Group One winner being the seven-time Group/Grade One winner California Chrome, while other notable progeny include the dual stakes winner and Grade One-placed Rousing Sermon, multiple stakes winner Luckarack, and stakes winner You're Late. "He was the picture of health all day," said Dave McGlothlin, farm manager at Harris Farms. "He had a perfectly normal day. He and the teaser were talking smack to one another like they always did. We're all stunned."

Catchy (Fastnet Rock) is now favourite to win what looks likely to be a highly competitive Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m)

on Saturday week following her narrow but impressive win in last Saturday’s Blue Diamond Prelude (F) division (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield.

Coming from the back of the field, Catchy powered home late to defeat the talented Limestone (Helmet) by a nose with Arctic Angel (Hard Spun) another length and a quarter back in third place. Significantly, Catchy’s winning time of 1:03.64 was faster than the 1:03.78 recorded by the gelding Property (Starcraft) in the following Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (Gr 3, 1100m).

This was Catchy’s third Melbourne victory in three starts with the unbeaten filly becoming

stakes winner 107 for her champion Coolmore-based sire Fastnet Rock (Danehill) who is enjoying perhaps his best ever season in terms of two-year-old winners with two or three others likely to oppose Catchy in the Blue Diamond Stakes.

Bred by popular Sydney identity Joy Jenkins, Catchy was sold in the Coolmore draft at last year’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale to Rob and Sylvie Crabtree’s Dorrington Farm and now looks something of a bargain buy at her purchase price of $220,000 considering her pedigree.

Catchy’s cost looks more reasonable again after her year younger sister sold to Alan Bell for $700,000 last month at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale. Their dam Cats Whisker (Fusaichi Pegasus) foaled a Fastnet Rock colt

last spring which we should see in a sale in 2018.

Unusually in this day and age Cats Whisker visited only one stallion, Fastnet Rock, in her first seven seasons at stud with all four of her foals to reach the racecourse becoming winners, three in metropolitan company (see accompanying catalogue pedigree). Last season, though, Cats Whisker had a change of partner when bred to Pierro (Lonhro) and is believed in foal.

Joy Jenkins bred and raced Cats Whisker, a very smart sprinter who scored two of her six wins as a two-year-old.

Cats Whisker won three Group races in Melbourne in 2009, the Let’s Elope Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m), Rose Of Kingston Stakes (Gr 2, 1400m) and the WW Cockram Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). She was also runner up to Gallica

(Redoute’s Choice) in the 2008 Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) and filled the same position in two Group Two races for fillies, earning a tick under $600,000 in prize money.

One of 25 stakes winners left by Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr Prospector) as a result of seven shuttle seasons (2001 to 2007) he spent at Coolmore’s Hunter Valley farm, Cats Whisker probably ranks as his second best Australasian runner after multiple Group One winner Haradasun.

Cats Whisker’s stakes-placed dam Perfect Halo (Don’t Say Halo) was also bred and raced by Joy Jenkins and clearly clicked well with Fusaichi Pegasus as he was also sire of her stakes-placed sister Cat’s Pyjamas, a good winner in Melbourne and in Ireland.

The somewhat highly strung Fusaichi Pegasus has left 74 stakes winners throughout the world and his daughters have a good record as producers both in Australia and in the United States.

Mares by Fusaichi Pegasus have worked well with Fastnet Rock and other sons of Danehill (Danzig) and it should be noted that Albany Reunion (Fastnet Rock), winner of the ARC Easter Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m) is bred on the same cross as Catchy while the wider Danehill/Mr. Prospector (Raise A Native) cross has achieved much success.

Catchy is linebred to Danzig (Northern Dancer) 3m x 4f and also carries a duplication of the three-quarter brothers Nijinsky (Northern Dancer) and The Minstrel (Northern Dancer), two horses who differed greatly as types.

Her dam Cats Whisker is linebred 3m x 4f to the influential sire Halo (Hail To Reason) so Catchy’s pedigree is one which fits her well to become a Group One winner in the future.

and the hotel is due to open in January,” Webster said, ‘It’s an exciting time and lot of planning has gone into the development including consultation with vendors as to what they want.”

Webster says the project has been quite a learning curve. “There were no plans to relocate, let alone build a hotel when I joined Inglis in 2007. I’ve learned a hell of a lot,” Webster said.

He says that the right facilities are part of the service expectation. “While buying a yearling might hinge on science and selection criteria and budgets there is also an emotional element and you want your clients in the right frame of mind. They expect a level of service and it’s important to show your level of appreciation for their custom,” he said.

That has been emphasised in the design of Warwick Farm and one of the motivators behind the proposed renovation of the Oaklands facility. Commercial realities will demand that the Warwick Farm complex is multi purpose.

“Ii will be used for sale purposes for 15 per cent of the year so a lot of detail has gone into the planning to ensure it will be suitable for weddings, expos, conference, food and wine festivals. The hotel will be 100 per cent owned by Inglis but managed by hotel specialists which is the norm,” he said.

Classic Overview“We were obviously delighted with the

results from Classic,” Webster said. Across the board but especially from the Gold Riband session which averaged $130,000. I’d have been happy with $90,000….hoping for $100,000 but tried not to say that beforehand.

The 2017 Inglis Classic Sale, which concluded Monday with a record average yet again, will not be the last horse auction conducted at

the famous Newmarket complex but the 2018 version will be the first conducted at Inglis’ new Warwick Farm headquarters.

It is going to be a momentous 150th anniversary year for Inglis. The move to Warwick Farm is scheduled for December. And imagine, for a moment, that next year you’ll be boarding a seaplane at Rose Bay and flown to the Chipping Norton Lake to attend the sales at Warwick Farm.

In the interim - aside from Premier in Melbourne and the final hallowed Easter Sales at Newmarket - the inaugural Chairman’s Sales will be held in Sydney with plans to follow suit in Melbourne, if Sydney works, plus there’s a scheduled rejuvenation of the sales complex in Melbourne.

OK, the seaplane may not be right at the top of the priorities for this extraordinary $140,000,000 development but Mark Webster, Inglis Managing Director, assures me that it is something the 150 year old company is examining.

Perhaps that is because Webster concedes that the Warwick Farm vision has been, until recently, a ‘hard sell’ to some industry participants. “However, I believe there’s very little negativity now as people have seen the plans and the photos and seen construction under way.

“It’s hard to imagine that any sales company, anywhere or anytime and even allowing for inflation, would have spent this amount of money ($140,000,000) on a sales complex. The Inglis family and other shareholders could have simply taken the money (from the sale of Newmarket) but instead have committed this huge sum to this Warwick Farm project for the benefit of the industry,” Webster said.

The Newmarket complex, purchased by Inglis in 1917, is believed to have sold for more

than $250,000,000. A confidentiality clause demands the speculation.

Inglis first sold a horse there in 1906 and for many in the business it’s a case of struggling to let go of the old girlfriend. “But we’ll all move on. It will be business as usual,” says Yarraman Park’s Arthur Mitchell.

Warwick Farm trainer Mark Newnham says he’s astounded at the rate of progress at the site which he drives past each day and is happy to assure people the commute is not so bad. “I think it’s going to be fabulous,” Newnham said.

The old barn, the homestead and the famous fig tree which has seemingly guarded the sales arena ‘forever’ will be all that remains of the existing sales complex which will become the 650 dwelling residential complex ‘Newmarket Green’.

The key elements of the new complex will be a 144 room hotel with integrated air conditioned sales arena, which will accommodate 1000 guests. Plus, of course, the new stables - re-using the hardwood from the existing Newmarket stables - and, importantly, well shaded parade areas given the issues which could have arisen from the extreme temperatures last weekend.

In deference to the past - the pre-parade ring adjoining the sales arena will feature two metallic fig tree sculptures and either side of the hotel will be two Moreton Bay fig trees, which have been grown from saplings of the famous Newmarket Fig Tree over many years in readiness for the move.

“We’ll be packing our desks in December

Steve Reviews The Classic Sale And Talks To Mark Webster About The Move To Warwick Farm

“The increase in the overall average was pleasing. It was probably just right. Too great a rise from one year to the next could potentially scare off buyers. At the same time, breeders and vendors don’t want to be in the sale which is seen to ‘bargain basement’ and I think this year we achieved a better balance for buyers and sellers. I think Classic has grown in quality and standing as well as by the numbers.”

Webster said that the upcoming Chairman’s Sales were part of on-going innovation. “Obviously the concept is not entirely new and we’ve taken aspects of other sales around the world and launched it here. We’ve had a strong level of interest including from Melbourne owners and trainers and if it goes well here, we’d look to do something similar in Melbourne through the spring,” he said.

These sales may not necessarily be held at the traditional venues. “We have considered selling at the Theatre of the Horse at Randwick but the lack of a roof there is some concern. Who knows, in Melbourne, we could have a sale

of elite racing or breeding prospects at Crown. There’s much to play out yet but these are all things which can be considered,” he said.

While buoyed by the success of the Classic sale, Webster acknowledges that there is a ‘delicate balance’ required to ensure continued growth in each of the house’s three major sales.

“Who’s to say if there’s a ceiling? But while prize money continues to increase and while the best colts command premium prices, pre and post racing, the market looks certain to remain strong,” he said.

Brief HistoryRenowned racing historian Andrew Lemon,

working on the history of Inglis, says the first horse sold at Newmarket was in 1867 and that the first Inglis sold horse at the venue was in 1905, not 1906.

He says: “The first yearling sales at Newmarket were in 1867 but not by Inglis who did not run the sales there until 1905……the Inglis company also began in business in 1867

- but they did not at that stage sell racehorses. “The first sales at Newmarket (run by

auctioneers S C Burt) consisted of exactly eight yearlings - but there was a crowd of a few hundred potential buyers including some big names from Victoria. The best horse sold at that sale was The Duke who won the 1868 AJC Derby.

“Various yearling sales were held at Newmarket in later years but not every year - sometimes sales were held at Randwick, sometimes in the city. Several auctioneers ran their own sales.

“Inglis took over the Newmarket sales in 1905 (you will read 1906 in some sources, but 1905 is the correct date) and have sold there ever since. Perhaps the best horse sold at the first Inglis yearling sale in 1905 was Melodrama who won two Epsom Handicaps at Randwick.”

HOOFNOTE: The Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale (April 10 - 12) will be the final sale held at Newmarket.
