KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS In Service To One – In Service To All Richard Council #788 LANSING COLUMBIAN DECEMBER 2012 - Volume 1007 #6 Monthly Available at: kofc788.org A Message From Your Grand Knight . . . . . . My Brother Knights and Families: Vivat Jesus!! I would like to start by thanking all of you who attended the Major Degree at St. Mary’s Cathedral on November 3 rd . Although the numbers were not what we expected Council 788 was well represented and I welcome our new first degree Knight’s. On that note - I am taking this opportunity to challenge every brother Knight to bring in a new member. I am sure that we all know someone who is Catholic; whether we sit next to them in church, work alongside them daily or know them as family or friend. I ask that you take a minute and tell them about being a Knight or bring them to a council function and then ask them to become a Knight. As an incentive I am extending this proposal to all the Knights of 788; bring in two new members by the end of June 2013 and I will waive your dues for one year. We cannot become a stronger, more charitable organization without growing our order so please take the challenge and invite someone to join the Knights of Columbus. On another note - I would like to address the council participation of Brother Knight’s and their families. It seems for a while now that it is the same people who are stepping up to volunteer and the same people who come out to support our council events. I am well aware that our economy is still not in great shape and that probably won’t improve anytime soon, BUT, we need the support of ALL of our members. I am not talking about making donations, I am talking about coming out to the fish fry’s, the monthly dinners or the special events we have here at the council. These activities are not expensive and it is a great way to meet new friends or hang out with old friends and support your council at the same time. We need a greater participation of our members to keep the council growing; to continue the charitable work we do locally and on a state level and it is essential to keep our council open and operating. **We have many events coming up this month so please check the newsletter calendar and save the dates. In closing - The council hall will be open on New Year’s Eve for some fun and fraternalism. There is no entry cost and the bar will be open. Bring your favorite snack food or just come and have a good time with the Grand Knight and his wife!! We would love to see you there to help us bring in the New Year. Wishing everyone a Happy and Joyous Holiday Season!!!!! God Bless Mike Schaefer Grand Knight, Council#788

Richard Council 788 Honor Roll

From The Corporation President Jay G. Corey

Our WESTERN NIGHT was a huge success and we received many compliments not only on the food, but also on the great sounds of the Kathy Ford Band. My thanks to Don Ruthruff for his assistance in preparing the food, and to John & Sherrie Drzik for all of their help in the kitchen, serving, and cleanup. Also, to Kathy Stoffer for her great potato salad and to Colleen Schmitz, Ann Clark, and Sherrie Drzik for assisting her. Finally, a thank you to PGK Bill Chasse and DGK Dane Jurkovic for their assistance in setting up the room and to R. Jay Kussmaul for assisting on the ticket sales. A great time was had by all, and everyone is looking forward to the same event next year.

Our LCA meeting which is normally the third Wednesday of the month, is moving in December only, to Wednesday, December 12th. This is to accommodate St. Gerard’s Men’s Night Out which is going to be held at our hall on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 beginning at 7 pm. Father Pieter VanRooyen will be addressing the group and everyone is welcome. The event lasts only one hour, and refreshments will be served afterwards at 8 pm. We hope to have a large attendance so please mark this on your calendar and plan to attend.

Our WILD GAME DINNER preparation is in high gear for this annual event which will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at St. Gerard Father Weber Hall. This is a great event with all sorts of wild game to taste, guns, rifles, and the like to win, and a big money maker for us. Tickets are now on sale for $30.00 each, with raffle tickets available for the Early Bird Gun Raffle. We are also going to have a squirrel hunt on January 5th, and a rabbit hunt on January 13th. You may purchase your tickets at the club, or by calling R. Jay Kussmaul at 323-2922. This is always a sellout, so get your tickets now !!!!!!!! A big thank you goes out to Jim Baker who recently donated four chair storage/movers for our chairs in the banquet room. This helps us store our chairs on movers, and move them around where we want without having to physically carry them. Thanks a lot Jim !!! I also want to thank the Ladies Auxiliary for their donation of $100.00 recently for the use of the banquet room for the Don Quixote party. Though they did not have to make this donation, it is appreciated for our continuing expenses for operating the club. Thank you ladies !!!!

I want to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Remember to keep CHRIST in CHRISTmas and to attend the many events we have scheduled at the club for you and your families.

From Your Editor Jay G. Corey

Sickness & Distress

Prayers and recovery intentions continue to be needed for Brothers Rod Shangle, Fr. William Luger, Mary Klein, (Father Klein’s mother), Nolan Cook, son of Advocate Ron Cook, Don Ruthruff, Louie McKenna, Jack Pratt, Mike Sparks, and Fr. Matt Fedewa. If you know of someone that is ill and recovering, or has passed away, please contact our Grand Knight, Mike Schaefer, at [email protected] or at home at 517-242-4961. You can reach our Financial Secretary, Jim Warner at [email protected] or at home at 321-1507 or by cell at 719-6794.

From The Council Financial Secretary Jim Warner

It’s that time of the year again . . . dues billings will be coming out in the next 30 days! I’m going to try a couple of new processes this year which are being used by other councils and have proven to be very successful.

First, those of you for which we have valid e-mail addresses will be receiving the first billing electronically. Simply print out the billing and mail back with your dues payment. This will save the council the costs associated with billings (paper, printer ink, envelopes, and postage) we will be issuing the first round of billings via e-mail. Please keep in mind that any funds we can save during the billing process reflects directly on our operating expenses which could be passed onto the deserving charities we support – so please consider using the e-mail process.

Please - Please - Please . . . If you have a new e-mail address, or just want to verify that we have your current address, drop me a quick note at [email protected] so we can update our records. Secondly, we will be separating the dues billing from the voluntary contributions sections of the yearly invoices. Many members have asked for this so we will make a trial run at it this year. This should also help to eliminate any confusion and make it easier to identify what you owe vs. your contribution options. Please note that, while your Knights of Columbus dues ARE NOT tax deductible, many of your voluntary contributions are “pass through” funds which go directly to the charity and are tax deductible – more information to follow.

If, for any reason, you have concerns about your dues payment, or are having difficulty in paying due to financial concerns or illness, please do not hesitate to contact our Grand Knight Mike Schaefer or myself so we can work it out. All billing information is kept confidential so don’t hesitate to ask. Please respond in a timely manner and do not just ignore your billings.

Also, all of our billing and member records now are on Supreme Council’s computerized Member Management System. In order to keep your records current, please update or add any missing information on the form enclosed in the billing statement, (e.g., telephone, email, employment, address – especially you snowbirds). Remember, the FS address, telephone number, & e-mail are on the back of your membership card, so you have no reason to say that you did not know how to contact me.

Please contact me immediately of any change in your information. You may contact me at 517-321-1507 (home), 517-719-6794 (cell/text), mailing me at 2120 Cumberland Road, Lansing Michigan 48906, or by e-mailing me at [email protected]. Thank you all and see you at the next Council meeting on Tuesday, December 11th at 7:30 pm.

From The Ladies Auxiliary By Vice-President Pattie Schaefer The past couple of months have been busy ones for the Ladies Auxiliary and December continues the pace with many events and projects.

Our biggest (and funnest) fund raiser is our annual CHRISTmas Dinner and Craft Auction. This one event allows us to support numerous local charities as well as our own Council 788; so PLEASE plan on attending on December 8, 2012 and bring an item to auction off. Doors open at 5:30 pm with appetizers; dinner will be served at 6:00 pm and the auction to start at 7:00 pm. See you there and bring a friend, or two, or three.

We will be decorating the hall for CHRISTmas on Sunday, November 25th at 12:00 noon. Any help would be appreciated.

It is once again that time, the Francis O'Donnell CHRISTmas project is swinging into high gear so anyone who would like to assist in shopping for, or wrapping the gifts for our 25 families please contact Marion Boucher at 517-882-5118. Information about the families, their wish lists and funds will be provided to the shoppers.

Octobers’ Don Quixote Halloween party for the handicapped was held on October 28 and it was a resounding success. This year’s party was dedicated to the party’s founder, Frieda Knapp. Her son Ronnie “Wron” Knapp did the DJ honors for us again and the music was great. We had 112 guest this year who enjoyed food, music, dancing and friendship. A special THANKS to Eric Wegener for donating the chips and pretzels; and thanks to all of those who helped out by decorating or cleaning up, preparing food, serving our guest, taking pictures etc…you made this event a success. The appreciation and smiles from our guest said it all.

I would like to close by wishing everyone a blessed CHRISTmas season and a healthy and Happy New Year.

From The Knights Daughters By President Haley Schaner

At our last meeting, we discussed our Christmas party, donating to shared pregnancy, and donating to the Francis O’Donnell project. We also discussed our past breakfast held in November. I’m sorry to say due to the rising cost of food, the prices per person for our breakfast will raise to $6.00.

We have decided that it would be a nice gesture to our community to host a food drive. We will place a decorative box in the K of C hall for donations. We are looking for non-perishable items such as canned soup and vegetables, mac & cheese, noodles, cereal, etc. We will be donating the food to a local food bank. If you are able, please drop off your food in the box to help out those in need.

We are always looking for new members. If you are a female between ages 10-18 you are welcome to join. Our meetings are held on the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 pm. I hope to see you there.

Lansing, Michigan 48906

27th Annual Francis O'Donnell Christmas Project

Brother Knights and Families: December 2012

Christmas time will be here before we know it and I am starting to get organized to get this project underway. This will be our 27th year of providing food and gifts to 24 families of the working and unemployed poor. With our economy in critical condition, we will probably be assisting more who have been laid off or lost jobs with companies that are cutting back or going out of business. The O’Donnell project is totally funded by donations of cash from our membership. The Knights and Ladies Auxiliary work with me to pack food boxes and purchase and wrap Christmas gifts for the 24 families we adopt. The families are assigned to us by the Capital Area Community Services who provide data sheets giving info about sizes needed and the children’s age and sex. Special needs are sometimes required. I do all of the shopping for food and bulk food donations. Our only expense for this project is for the postage and supplies needed to print and send this appeal out to you. I also provide the workers lunch and refreshments after the work is done. Can you help or donate ? Call me if you want to help. My cell number is 243-3107. We need your financial support to make this project a success once again. Remember the first and foremost principal of our order is Charity. It is our Christian and Fraternal duty to help our brothers and sisters who are in need. Remember, Jesus said, “Whatever you do for the least of my brothers you do unto me”. God Bless us all, and please pray for the success of this project. To donate, write a check, made out to the Council and note on the memo line O’Donnell Project. Mail or drop off your donation at the Council. Please, also, note on the envelope the O’Donnell Project. This will aid in separating donations from other mail such as dues or other council business.

PGK Al Boucher, Francis O’Donnell Project Chairman
