Many people love to explore. They like to go to new places. Long ago, people went to new lands. Some were looking for gold. Others wanted lands to rule. Others looked for places to start a new life.
Five hundred years ago, European explorers went across the ocean. They explored North and South America. They called these places the New World.
Some explorers looked for gold in the New World. This Native American object was made of gold.

In 1539, they sent a monk to look for Cíbola. A monk is a religious man. His name was Marcos de Niza. Marcos and some explorers went to find Cíbola.

The Zunis lost the fight. Coronado did not find any gold there. So Coronado kept looking. He sent explorers to the east. They did not see golden cities.
