Jim Gunnells has found a love in his second career as an acute care practitioner.
“I don’t look at this as a job. It’s a career,” he said. “I know this is where God has me.”
Gunnells, who previously worked in banking, returned to his love of medicine 12 years ago, working in emergency rooms and providing critical care in Birmingham and Wedowee. But nine months ago, Gunnells returned to Calhoun County, where he was born and raised, to help lead The Oxford Clinic.
At the clinic, Gunnells provides primary care for patients, helping treat everything from the common cold to minor injuries to chronic illnesses. And he said he loves
working with his patients.“I think once you’ve found your calling,
you’re content and happy in your environ-ment,” he said.
But Gunnells doesn’t think he’s all that different from other care providers in town.
“I think we’re all concerned about our patients,” he said. “I don’t see myself as
being extraordinary in any way.”
Gunnells, though, has an enthusiasm for his work that comes through the moment you meet him.
“I think what’s important as far, as what I do now,” he said, “is the desire to help people, to care for people.”

Although many people don’t consider working out to be the most fun part of their day, Jennifer Scruggs is try-
ing to change that. Scruggs, who owns
Bodymechanix Per-sonal Training Services in Oxford, started out in the fitness industry more than 20 years ago and has been helping others get in shape ever since.
“I was 19 and couldn’t afford a gym membership,” she said of her begin-nings. Before she knew it, others were asking her for workout advice.
Since then, Scruggs has been licensed and certified in many different training areas, and she teaches aero-bics and fitness classes at the Golden Springs Community Center. She also trains clients at the Calhoun County YMCA or can even go to clients’ homes
for a more personal and private train-ing experience.
Scruggs said the personal relation-ship she builds with her clients is essential to a good training environ-
ment.“You have to have that
special relationship with them because you do get so close to them,” she said. “It’s hard to moti-vate someone that you don’t have a personal connection with.”
But the relationship goes both ways, and Scruggs tries to open up about her personal life with her clients as well.
“It’s nice to know I am making just as much impact on my clients emo-tionally and therapeutically as they have done for me,” she said. “It’s been just as rewarding for me to know that I’ve had a little impact on their lives, if not a big impact.”

Dr. Marvin Poland knows how people feel about den-tists, and he’s trying to help put them at ease.
“Many patients come in and they’re afraid,” said Poland, who is a dentist at Oxford Dental Care. “Often times, they’re already in pain. We try to not only get them treated, but to make them feel better when they’re here.”
Poland knew he wanted to become a dentist in elementary school, and for the past 33 years, that’s exactly what he’s been doing. Poland spent 20 of those years in the Army Dental Corps, and worked at Fort McClel-lan before the base shut down.
When asked what sets Poland apart from other dentists in the area, Poland immediately starts to think about how he relates to his patients.
“Primarily, empathy,” he responded. “I know pretty much what most proce-dures feel like.”
Poland said he also has a great deal of respect for his patients, and that he is always honest with them and tries to help them avoid long waiting-room
delays.“I treat the patient the way I’d want
to be treated,” he said. “That’s been my motto, and it’s seemed to work. We appreciate our patient’s time as much as our own.”
Poland said he enjoys the variety his job brings, with a new or different task always waiting for him.
“That just keeps it interesting all day,” he said.

Steve Stevens’ day starts earlier than most – at 3 a.m. to be exact.
“And trust me, this does not look pretty at 3 a.m.,” he joked.
But no matter how early Stevens has to get up to do his half of the Steve and Julie Show on 97.9 WVOK in Oxford, he’s willing to do it.
“All I’ve ever wanted to do was radio,” he said.
Stevens started working in the radio business at the age of 14 in Georgia. For the past 10 years, he’s been the voice that listeners of 97.9 wake up to during the week.
Without a doubt, Stevens says his favorite part of his job is the audience.
“Instead of listeners, we have family,” he said. “Even though we may never have met the people, they feel like they know us, and we want to get to know them.”
Stevens said the listeners mean a great deal to him per-sonally as well.
“I’m the one that is very blessed,” he said. “They’ve seen me through a lot. Every day is like a dream come true, honestly.”
Stevens is realistic about the show and what he can accomplish with it, but that doesn’t make him any less dedi-cated to his job.
“I’ve always said that our show will never be one to cure cancer,” he said. “But, hopefully, it will be one to help someone who is suf-fering from it feel better.”

Keith Kelley never stops learn-ing from his job.
Kelley, who works at Centu-ry 21 Harris-
McKay Realty in Annis-ton, has been in the realty business for more than 20 years. Kelley transitioned to the business from his background in construc-tion, which he said has helped him understand commercial properties and clients better. But that isn’t what he enjoys most about his job.
“Honestly, it’s working with people, which sounds cliche, but it really is,” he said. “Nothing is the same from day to day.”
And although the economic challenges require real estate agents to have patience and understanding in the current market, Kelley still looks forward to going to work
every day.“Who else gets to go to work every
day and try to help people achieve the American dream of own-ing a home?” he said. “It doesn’t get much better than that.”
Kelley also said the realty business has allowed to him to com-bine his passion of local and state politics as well, especially since there is
a lot of overlap in government regulation and the realty property.
And although Kelley is honored to be recognized, he said he does not deserve all the credit.
“You can’t look at one person. It’s really those I get to work with every day,” he said. “We all learn from each other. You don’t ever quit learning.”

Sean Perez, of Perez Plumbing, didn’t always want to be a plumber like his father and grandfa-
ther. But over time, he gave in.“I tried to stay away from it,” he
said. “But it’s something I’ve got a knack for. It’s some-thing I’m good at.”
Perez enjoys helping people in the area,
especially in a field where people often have no idea how to fix the problem themselves.
“It’s the challenge of doing some-thing that not a lot of people can do,” he said. “It’s helping people and the
smile on their face when you do it right.”
Perez runs most of the company himself, employing only one other person.
Perez said that, in an area where a lot of plumbers try to run busi-nesses without being insured or cer-tified, his honesty, loyalty and dedi-cation to training sets him apart.
“When I say I’m going to be there, I’m there,” he said. “And I do what I say I’m going to do.”
Perez said that although keeping up with the new technologies in the field can be a challenge, the people he gets to work with make the dif-ference.
“Everybody has got their own story,” he said. “I like to get friendly with my customers, and a lot of them are like family.”

Fidel Sanchez is a humble person, and maybe that’s why he’s such a great waiter. Sanchez doesn’t even
like using the term “Best Waiter.”’ He deflects such hyperbole, saying he sim-ply works hard to put forth his best effort.
“I always try to do my best,” he said.
Sanchez started working at Los Mexi-canos when it was still on South Quintard Avenue. Now, Covalli’s satisfies resi-dents’ cravings for Italian food at that location, while Los Mexicanos found a different location and opened a second store, too.
Sanchez moved to Tuscaloosa for a few years before returning in 2006, just in time to be on board when Los Mexicanos III opened up on Highway 78 East.
“We’re all like family,” he said. “We try to help each other out.”
In some cases, workers at the restau-rant literally are family. For instance, Fidel’s brother works at the Los Mexi-
canos restaurant on Hamric Drive. When asked about the best part of
being a waiter, Sanchez said, “It’s get-ting to know the customers.”
Los Mexicanos III has customers who come in regularly and become
like family. Being able to connect with customers in such a way makes him feel more connected to the Anniston community. It’s only through cus-tomers that he knows
he’s doing a good job.“Sometimes you just know when
you’ve done a good job,” Sanchez said. “People just tell you when you’ve done a good job.”
The hardest part of being a waiter is when customers come in all at the same time and the restaurant is cha-otic. It’s hard to do everything perfectly in such a scenario.
Sanchez wants to thank everyone who voted for him.
“I’m grateful they appreciate the job that I try my best at,” he said.

Josh Forrest wasn’t the type who had always dreamed of becoming a fire-fighter from the time he was a little kid. He went to Jacksonville State
and majored in animal biology, but after college he felt called to become a firefighter.
Forrest started his job with the Anniston Fire Department in May of 2007.
“Being a Christian, I’m all about serving people,” he said.
Forrest attends Leather-wood Baptist Church and credits any praise as a fire-fighter to his faith.
He has several family members who are also firefighters, including his uncle, Larry Tillison, who also works for the Anniston Fire Department.
His experience as a firefighter is defi-
nitely helpful, even though the job is always unpredictable.
“You’ve got your set things that you do every day,” Forrest said. “But every day is different.
“I wouldn’t say I feel comfortable because that leads to complacency.”
However, experience has helped him become more aware, given him a stronger idea of what to possibly expect, and helped raise his sense of responsibility.
When the department receives a call, he tries to run through the many dif-
ferent scenarios in his head before they actually go out so he’s better-prepared.
“You never know exactly what’s going to happen until you get there,” he said.

Covalli’s Italian Kitchen is defi-nitely a family operation.
Husband, wife, sons and daughters-in-law all work
at Covalli’s. According to Gloria Covalli, one of the managers, it all came about while her husband was helping family appropri-ately enough. While Mr. Covalli was traveling to Gadsden to help family, he continually passed by the space where Covalli’s is now and wondered.
Mr. Covalli had gotten burned out with the restaurant business after the family had owned a restaurant in Villa Rica, Ga., for around five years. If you know anything about the restaurant business, you know such a sentiment isn’t uncommon. It’s a tough business.
But the Anniston community has made the transition back a smooth one.
“We feel very welcome,” Gloria Covalli said. “Everybody seems very appreciative to have us here.”
The location of Covalli’s is on a busy strip of South Quintard Avenue, sort of in between Oxford and downtown Annis-ton, and surrounded by a swarm of car dealerships.
The building itself has an interior of red brick and a tasteful shade of red blinds and walls of a matching color to closely blend with the brick.
Black-and-white photos along the wall are of the family from their restaurant in Villa Rica,
showing them working in kitchens and hand-tossing dough.
The menu is full of traditional Ital-ian dishes like baked ziti and manicotti, along with other Italian staples like pizza, calzones, meatball subs, and eggplant parmesan, with plenty of marinara sauce.
Just be careful: While the marinara sauce is delicious, if you’re not careful, your clothes may eat some of it, too.

A milkshake from Cecil’s Place will take you from 100-degree summer heat to being cooler than a Chi-
cago blizzard.County residents agree that you
won’t do much better than Cecil’s Place when it comes to milkshakes. Their milkshakes are the thickest, creamiest and most flavorful in the area.
“We still do it the old-school way with the metal mixers,” owner Tyler Marbut said.
Another key to the quality of the milkshake is the quality of the ice cream, which at Cecil’s Place includes a variety of flavors of hand-dipped ice cream.
“You don’t cut the corners on your signature products,” he said. “I’m all for getting a good deal on paper towels.”
Marbut was born and raised in Jacksonville. His dad, Cecil, first opened the restaurant in 1980. Tyler started working there in 1986, and took over as owner three years ago when his dad retired. Times have
changed since Tyler’s father first opened the restaurant.
“When he opened this place, the only thing in this town was McDon-ald’s, us and Hardees,” he said. “He had the market cornered. It was a gold mine.”
While operating costs have risen and dozens of other fast-food chains
offering milkshakes on their menus have cropped up through-out the area, such places aren’t locally owned. Also, those places don’t have flavorful milkshakes
made with hand-dipped ice cream, such as the peanut butter milkshake that’s loaded with generous portions of peanut butter.
Tyler estimates the most popular milkshake is the hand-dipped cookies and cream, but there are plenty of other flavors, just some of which include cookie dough, rocky road, black wal-nut, as well as cherry, grape, banana and pineapple for those with a pen-chant for fruity flavors.

Nestled between a Texaco and a Subway is an unlikely site for a bakery, but that’s where you’ll
find a cornucopia of sweets in Oxford at Too Nice to Slice.
Too Nice to Slice is one of the few places in the area where you can find homemade fudge in a variety of flavors, as well as sugar-free cupcakes, brownies and cakes.
They also recently started selling red velvet cake ice cream, which has quickly become a popular item on the menu. Employees estimate the red velvet cupcakes are still their best-sell-ing item. If all of that isn’t enough red velvet for you, they also sell red velvet brownies and red velvet cake.
Too Nice to Slice also offers custom cakes made to order. Party supplies may also be found in the store, from cards to candles.
For those just dropping in to satisfy a sweet craving, they have cheesecake, pies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, muffins, fried pies and cream horns.
For those looking for variety, they have a multitude of cupcake flavors.
Just some of the flavors include: Swiss mocha, banana pudding, Ital-ian cream, butter pecan, chocolate with peanut butter, funfetti, Elvis and watermelon. Too Nice to
Slice uses buttercream icing and cream cheese icing, depending on the flavor.
A creative sign in the window urges customers to “cool down with our summer sweets.” The letters in “sum-mer” have flames; the letters in “cool” are covered with snow and the first “O” in “cool” is wearing green sun-glasses. Customers would likely want to sample some of the many varieties of Blue Bell ice cream if they need to cool down.

In such a serious time of eco-nomic upheaval and financial uncertainty, knowing who to trust when planning financially
or investing is important. Providing that trust for local clients
on their investment decisions is Mike Poe, financial advisor at Wells Fargo Advisors in Anniston.
Poe began working for A.G. Edwards in 2000 before it was purchased by Wachovia in 2007. Wachovia was bought by Wells Fargo a year later. Although the company has gone through several acquisitions and name changes since Poe started, the service for his clients remains the same.
Poe said he “prefers to take a holistic approach to investment planning” and works with clients in many ways on their long-term investment goals, including retirement income planning, funding college, estate planning and other objec-tives important to the client.
“I try to explain investment con-cepts in a manner that clients can easily
understand,” he said. “I get a lot of sat-isfaction when I sense that a client has a ‘light bulb moment.’ I put the client’s interests first and I treat others the way I would expect to be treated.”
With so many investment and bro-kerage firms in the county, Poe said the key to his successful relationship with his clients is communication.
“I try to serve as an unemotional third party that can help guide clients through prosperous times and the stressful times,” he said. “I make an extra effort to make sure clients understand what they’re investing in so they’re not surprised down the road.”

Golf season is in full swing. Here to help golf enthusiasts select the right club to hit that solid, straight drive is Seales Golf in Oxford.
The discount store has been providing golfing accessories by top name brands like Callaway, TaylorMade and Ping for 12 years.
Owners Will and Brandi Seales said they are just a family business offering customers the best prices, quality fittings and knowledge about golf-ing equipment. Employed at a golf course when he was just 12 years old, Seales said the knowledge comes from being exposed to the sport at such a young age.
With a demo golf course in the back to test swings for his customers, custom fittings and special orders are an important part of Seales’ job.
“You have to get the right kind of club for the person and we analyze their swing when we fit the club,” Seales said. “We try to make their bad shots better to save strokes and help them have their best game. If you can save five or 10 strokes, that’s worth it.”
While custom fittings and giving customers the best prices have helped to keep Seales in business, Seales said the main reason for their longevity is the customers. And Seales gets customers all the way from Birmingham and Atlanta to Sylacauga.
“It’s just the local mom-and-pop strategy, and we’re only as good as our last customer,” Seales said. “The only reason we’re here is because of our repeat customers over the years, because without customers, a store is useless. In business, you can’t make everyone happy, but we certainly try our best.”

It may be hard to believe that tucked away in a warehouse among industrial buildings is an “insanely chic and unique” boutique with a stylish assortment for women and children.
But the juxtaposition of the hard exterior and deli-cate interior of Sweet Peas Boutique in Oxford is why residents have come to favor the off-the-beaten-path shopping experience.
Owner Val Winfrey said she and her husband took the warehouse and turned it into an entirely different look for customers when they walk into shop.
The airy space is filled with dan-gling chandeliers, antique furniture and wire stands. Sweet Peas Boutique also boasts a wide assortment of clothing, including denim, dresses, blouses, shorts, jewelry, purses, shoes and even Oxford Yellow Jacket apparel.
“We search for the upcoming styles and we try to be ahead of the trends,” Winfrey said. “You’ll see things that you won’t see at other stores, and our customers
like that.”Not only does Winfrey scout major cities like New
York and Las Vegas for unique finds, but she also tries to give her customers high-end quality and brands that will not break the bank.
“We have a wide price range,” she said. “You can be trendy and contemporary, but everything is afford-
able.” Winfrey insisted the customer ser-
vice is what has kept the customers coming back to shop for almost three years. With a small staff of just two employees, Haley Elders and Abbey Gilchrist, Winfrey said they work hard to get to know the customers on a one-on-one basis.
“You can’t judge a book by its cover when looking at the outside because it’s sort of like our hidden secret,” she said. “Once you come in, meet the staff and look at our products and price points, you’ll be addicted and fall in love with our store.”

Among a myriad of auto and tire shops in the county, one stands above the rest
in helping customers navigate through the challenge of picking the best tires for their vehicle and their routine maintenance needs.
Brothers Steve and Andy Davis have owned and operated Mike’s Tire & Auto Ser-vice in Anniston for nearly 20 years, deliver-ing quality auto service at the best prices, according to Steve Davis.
Davis is humbled and honored to have the community recognize his business for its tire service and said Mike’s Tire & Auto stands out because of its excellent customer service.
“We try to treat each person with respect,” he said.
Offering the top brands in tires, such as Michelin, BFGoodrich
and Uniroyal, Mike’s Tire & Auto also specializes in alignments, oil changes, brake services, tire rota-tions and balances, and tune-ups. The auto shop’s website allows customers to request services and quotes online as well as receive coupons.
With summer temperatures steadily rising, drivers may be working their car overtime to stay cool. Davis said Mike’s Tire & Auto also provides A/C service and inspec-
tions.Anniston resident and long-
time customer Albia Smith said she comes to Mike’s Tire & Auto to have service done on her vehicle frequently.
“They are the friendliest people when they talk to you,” she said. “I love it here. They’re just good people.”

Miller Florist and Gifts in Oxford offers some of the same services other local florists do, but with
a twist. Upon walking into the charming shop, on the left sits a table full of cher-ubs and angel wings. Directly across are monogrammed blankets, porcelain dishes, stuffed playmates for gift sets, and, of course, a wide array of floral arrangements from live to artificial plants. In business for nearly three decades, Miller’s provides for local residents in their time of bereavement, celebrations and joyous occasions.
Lisa Lovelady wears a lot of hats for Miller Florist, but her main job is creating unique pieces for the Dudley Miller-owned business as the floral designer. According to Lovelady, creat-ing beautiful arrangements for custom-ers is important, but it is their customer service that makes them stand out in the community.
“We go the extra mile to give custom-ers what they want, especially when it
comes to funerals, because that’s the last thing you’ll get to do for people,” she said.
In addition to providing arrange-ments for funerals, Lovelady said Miller Florist also designs custom arrange-ments and centerpieces for weddings, births, anniversaries, graduations,
birthdays and other spe-cial functions.
“There’s really nothing we can’t do and we like to offer our customers a variety,” she said. “We cover a big area. If we
can’t handle it, then we call someone who can.”
While summer is generally a slow time for the shop, Lovelady said things will pick up in October, just in time for football season, and they will be back to providing that “special touch to every order for their customers.”
“We specialize in unique design and one-of-a-kind arrangements,” Lovelady said. “We make everybody feel special because every order is special to us.”

From the waiting area, one could get used to the sound of dogs barking and cats purring at Long Animal Clinic. Owned and operated by Dr. H. Wayne
Long, the small animal practitioner has serviced local residents’ beloved pets for almost 25 years.
Wendy Feazell, a technician at Long Animal Clinic, has worked for Long for 15 years. She said she has always loved and enjoyed working with animals.
“We’re just like a big family here, and I think it shows in the care we give to our patients,” she said.
A small staff of eight employees provides qual-ity pet care for the community as well as surround-ing counties. Fea-zell said patients have traveled as far as Tennessee and Georgia to receive treatment for their pets.
“We truly care about the animals,” she said. “We try to give good, quality care at a price that’s reasonable and what people can actually afford.”
Long Animal Clinic performs various services for pets, including surgeries, yearly routines and vaccinations. The clinic also has a lot of boarding clientele, Feazell added.
Ensuring pet owners that their sick cat or dog will be taken care of can be challenging. And Feazell said the staff works hard to treat a lot of the sick animals they see daily. But she insisted customer service is their top priority, and their service keeps them at the forefront in Anniston.
“The hard work definitely pays off when the community appreciates you,” she said.
