!   Technology  is  beneficial  for  students  with  reading  disabili=es.    It  helps  alleviate  the  cogni=ve  load  that  readers  experience  as  they  read.        

!   Students  with  reading  disabili=es  experience  a  lot  of  cogni=ve  stress.    The  stresses  are  caused  by  three  challenges:  

Comprehension   Reten=on  Decoding  

Cogni=ve  Stress  

Decoding  

!   Inability  to  break  down  words  into  phonemes  !   Common  challenge  among  students  with  dyslexia  !   Cogni=ve  stress:  can’t  get  beyond  the  

pronuncia=on  and  composi=ons  of  words      

Comprehension  

!   Inability  to  understand  what  has  been  read.  !   Common  challenge  among  students  with  dyslexia  !   Cogni=ve  Stress:    can’t  understand  what  the  

contextual  meaning  of  words  on  the  page      

Reten=on  

!   Inability  to  remember  what  has  been  read.  !   Cogni=ve  Stress:    doesn’t  remember  what  was  read  

immediately  or  shortly  aIer  reading  

!   By  using  technology  to  assist  with  reading,  students  who  have  reading  disabili=es  will  experience  less  cogni=ve  stress.

!  Apps,  like  Speark  It!  can  read  text  aloud  !   Readers  can  follow  along  as  the  text  is  read

!   Computer  reading  programs,  like  the  Kurzweil  3000,  can  define  words  to  clarify  meaning  of  a  given  text.

!   Reading  devices,  like  a  kindle,  allows  readers  to  make  notes  while  they  read.    This  will  help  struggling  readers  reflect  on  the  text.
