I can’t think of a more positive way to celebrate summer than with a celebration of your own Washington Talking Book & Braille Library. WTBBL was just recognized as the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped Network Library of the Year for 2016. This is our second time winning the award since 2009. We were selected for our commitment to mission, creativity and innovation, as well as patron satisfaction. It is an incredible honor to be recognized for our work. I couldn’t be more proud of the staff, appreciative of the volunteers, and thankful for the support from patrons and friends of WTBBL. We wouldn’t be nearly as successful without you.

The Network Library of the Year award highlighted work in three key areas. We exceeded by far the standard for outreach and public education as defined by the American Library Association Revised Standards and Guidelines for Service. A team of three staff members completed a targeted outreach effort to older adults by visiting 90 care facilities in 53 cities. We also gave numerous presentations and hosted informational tables at community events. The statewide effort accomplished multiple objectives, including assessing existing organizational library accounts, raising public awareness

of the library, and creating opportunities for individuals to register for library service. We increased our efforts to provide services and programming for youth. Our weekly multisensory story times incorporated accessible play and early literacy skills, serving hundreds of children and families in the library. We were awarded a 2016 Teen Tech Week grant from the Young Adult Library Services Association, and an accessible gaming lab for our youth patrons was created. The gaming lab has given us even more opportunities to travel around the state, perform outreach, meet new teachers and students, and help our youth patrons feel welcome.

Finally, WTBBL expanded its outreach to the Hispanic community through public service announcements on Spanish radio stations, partnering with a local provider of health services to Latinos and the Washington State Commission on Hispanic Affairs, exhibiting at Fiestas Patrias, and placing a half-page ad in the local Hispanic directory. As a result, Spanish-speaking patrons who were registered for service increased by 33 percent last year.

We will continue to do all we can to expand WTBBL’s reach and effectiveness with innovative initiatives to increase our overall user population, establish and strengthen borrower relationships, and promote high quality, accessible library and information resources. Enjoy your summer, and thank you for being a part of our award-winning library family.

Danielle Miller and Washington State Librarian Cindy Aden

From Cindy Aden, State Librarian The Washington State Library builds prosperous and informed communities by providing technology, access to information, resources, and professional support.

Hot off the press — the new vision and mission statements for the Washington State Library! Staff created these statements as part of the State Library’s five-year plan, which is required to remain eligible for approximately $3 million each year in federal funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The staff worked hard to craft a statement that extends to all that we do in the state, from serving the Legislature and prison libraries to providing services and training to public

libraries, and, of course, to supporting the Washington Talking Book & Braille Library. We emphasized access to underscore all that WTBBL does to make sure citizens who have difficulty using standard print have access to reading.

The five-year plan includes goals specifically for WTBBL that include focusing on populations the library plans to target: veterans, the elderly, and Spanish speakers. Additionally the plan will continue the great work it has already undertaken to serve youth, and finally, it will do even more to reach out to underserved populations in Washington state. From Cindy Aden, State Librarian (continued)

And while we are speaking of federal money, the 2018 budget is being decided now, and the future of IMLS is not certain. If you would like to help, please contact your U.S. senators and U.S. representative to encourage continued support of the essential library funding provided by IMLS, which is targeted for elimination under the current administration’s budget proposal. IMLS has been providing funding to the state of Washington — and to WTBBL — since its inception in 1996. For more information, go to everylibrary.org or ala.org. Fact sheets that tell the story of how this money is spent in our state can be found on the Washington State Library website, sos.wa.gov/library.

Last, but certainly not least, it was a huge honor to receive the Network Library of the Year award from the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Library of Congress. WTBBL Director Danielle Miller and her staff are so deserving of recognition and I couldn’t be prouder. Despite being the first NLS library to win the award twice, WTBBL staff are not resting on their laurels. The five-year plan makes it clear there are more strategies to reach potential users

and to make sure the service is known around the state.

Thank you for all you do to support WTBBL. We are proud to serve the citizens of this state, and we look forward to serving more people with more services in the months and years ahead.

Have a great summer!

THANK YOU to the dozens of work groups at WTBBL, who in 2017

have donated more than 1,100 hours!

Youth Services Update by Marian Mays

Summer in the Youth Services Department is heating up! Our Summer Reading Program kicked off in July, and the WTBBL youth who enrolled will receive a weekly packet in the mail with suggested booklists and fun activities to promote literacy skills. We’re excited to help our youth patrons challenge themselves, try new things, and grow with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) activities, great books, and shared stories through our 2017 program, “Build a Better World.”

April at WTBBL was a fun month as we hosted our second “Experience Art” Multisensory Youth Art Exhibition. Students from across Washington had the opportunity to submit their artwork for judging and prizes in various categories. Families who were able to attend the event in person enjoyed tactile arts-and-crafts stations and viewed a wide variety of art. I am looking forward to the next youth art exhibition!

One of my favorite parts of my job is outreach, and I had the opportunity to visit the Medical Lake, Federal Way, Issaquah and Yakima school districts with our adaptive gaming lab over the past few months. In addition, I was able to

present on sensory story times and BARD Express at events held by the Washington Library Association, the Pacific Northwest Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired, and the Infant and Early Childhood Conference. In addition, 41 of our Washington students were able to connect with new friends with our spring Pen Pal Program, which wrapped up in May.

During the first week of June, we said goodbye to our graduate student from the University of Washington, Elena Garcia, who completed a directed fieldwork course in the Youth Services Department. “I got to admire everyone’s Experience Art 2017 entries, go to story time, and work on the Summer Reading Program,” Elena said. “Now I am thinking about my own summer reading!” Here are some children’s and young adult books on Elena’s list: Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Sáenz (DB 76122 / BR 19825), We Are Okay by Nina LaCour (DB 87287), and The Girl Who Fell Beneath Fairyland and Led the Revels There by Catherynne Valente (DB 77845).

Local Books on BARD Reflect Diversity!by John Pai

In addition to recording, reviewing, and editing new titles for the audio book collection of the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, we are constantly revisiting our archived books to unearth many classics as well as favorite current reads. Check out these new WTBBL additions to the BARD website at nlsbard.loc.gov:

DBC 326 A Chinaman’s Chance: One Family’s Journey and the Chinese American Dream by Eric Liu. From Tony Hsieh to Amy Chua to Jeremy Lin, Chinese Americans are now arriving at the highest levels of American business, civic life and culture. But what makes this story of immigrant ascent unique is that Chinese Americans are emerging at just the same moment when China has emerged — and indeed may displace America — at the center of the global scene. What does it mean to be Chinese American in this moment? Provocative, often playful but always thoughtful, author Liu breaks down his vast subject into bite-sized chunks, along the way providing insights into universal matters: identity, nationalism, family and more. Narrated by Kevin Lin. 2014.

DBC 360 We Were Here by Matt de la Peña. Haunted by the event that sentences him to time in a group home, Miguel breaks out with two unlikely companions, and together they begin their journey down the California coast hoping to get to Mexico and a new life. Strong language and violence. High school and older readers. Narrated by Brian Padgett. 2009.

DBC 379 Ka-mi-akin: The Last Hero of the Yakimas by A.J. Splawn. Historical sketches of Indian tribes and their leaders of Oregon, Washington and Idaho, as encountered and researched by the author. The author seeks to present the Indian side of their conflict with settlers and the U.S. government. Narrated by John Ogliore. Originally published in 1917.

DBC 474 Wangari Maathai: The Woman Who Planted Millions of Trees by Franck Prevot. Wangari Maathai received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her efforts to lead women in a nonviolent struggle to bring peace and democracy to Africa through its reforestation. Her organization planted over 30 million trees in 30 years. For grades K-3. Narrated by Kate Loitz. 2015.

DBC 596 No Excuses: Growing Up Deaf and Achieving My Super Bowl Dreams by Derrick Coleman, Jr. The author describes his early life as a deaf person, and describes his rookie year, when the Seattle Seahawks went to the Super Bowl in 2014. Narrated by John Gahagan. 2015.

DBC 391 Cast of Characters: Lost and Found Encounters with the Living God by Max Lucado. A companion volume to Cast of Characters: Common People in the Hands of an Uncommon God (DBC 390), delves into the lives of more than twenty of the Bible's most compelling characters through inspirational selections from the writings of bestselling author Max Lucado, and features a whole new cast and the encouragement from their stories. Narrated by Jim Weston. 2012.

Additionally, some of our Northwest-themed books have emerged as new additions to the BARD collection. They include:

DBC 598 The Bully of Order by Brian Hart. Washington State. Late 1800s. Duncan Ellstrom, son of a disgraced father, lives in Harbor, a corrupt and violent mill town. The only hope in his life is his love for Teresa Boyerton, a mill owner's

daughter. Told from various points of view, this is a vivid story of hard people living on the edge of civilization. Narrated by Rick Sipe. 2014.

DBW 540 Until Proven Guilty by J.A. Jance. The beautiful woman who came to the little girl's funeral was irresistible to detective J.P. Beaumont. Beau won't rest until he finds out who killed the little girl and what is going on at the religious cult in Ballard. Narrated by Carter Bentley. 1985.

DBW 504 Trial by Fury by J.A. Jance. A body is found lying naked and dead in a dumpster. The victim, a high school coach, was lynched, leaving behind a very pregnant wife with a very dangerous secret. A sixth sense developed over twenty years on the job tells homicide detective J.P. Beaumont that this investigation is going to the lethal extremes of the wrong kind of love and the worst kind of justice. Narrated by Carter Bentley. 1986.

It all distills down to a summer of good reading. Watch out for more new titles and other favorites from the past. Call WTBBL at (800) 542-0866 to get these and other books!

Romance is one of the most versatile genres we offer at WTBBL. There are sweet romances, with only a kiss at the end, or torrid romances that leave little to the imagination. Settings range from contemporary small town America to medieval Europe to worlds that wouldn’t be out of place in science fiction or fantasy. The only thing required in a romance is that the couple achieve an emotionally satisfying happy ending by the last page.

Here are a few romances we’ve acquired over the last couple of years that I’ve enjoyed and would recommend.

DB 80368 I Want It That Way; As Long as You Love Me; The Shape of My Heart by Ann Aguirre. This is a trilogy of romances about three young people as they navigate college life. My favorite is the second book, As Long As You Love Me, which features a girl who figures out that college isn’t for her and her best friend’s older brother, who never quite felt like he was good enough for anybody. Aguirre is a versatile writer who has tried her hand at many different genres, and she handles all of them well. I loved how contemporary her characters felt and that they all grappled with conflicts that could really face young people today.

DB 79631 The Captive Hearts Trilogy by Grace Burrowes. Grace Burrowes writes cozy historical romances. I call her the “Lay’s potato chip” of romance — I can’t read just one of her books. Her characters are always likeable, and she’s good at showing her couples becoming friends along with falling in love. If that isn’t enough, there are lavish descriptions of food. This trilogy features three men who are scarred by their experiences in the Napoleonic Wars and the heroines who heal and are healed by them.

DB 78316 Romancing the Duke by Tessa Dare. This is a completely different kind of historical romance. Izzy has a lot to contend with as the daughter of a renowned author of fantasy stories, all of which are about an idealized version of herself. When she inherits a castle that is still occupied by its previous tenant, a duke named Ransom, she’s not pleased. This book is a love letter to fandom in all its forms. It’s lighthearted and funny, and Dare handles the duke’s vision impairments perfectly.

Of course, this barely scratches the surface of the romances available. For further reading recommendations, feel free to call WTBBL’s Reader’s Advisors at (800) 542-0866.

Volunteer Spotlight on Gregg Porter

I’ve worked at Seattle’s NPR affiliate, 94.9 KUOW, off and on since 1984. I was a production manager, producer of national programs and live events, digital archivist, and am currently the station’s weekend announcer. I also worked at WTBBL for a few years, working alongside John Pai in running the now-closed Evergreen Radio Reading Service. When John returned to manage WTBBL’s production of talking books, I saw that as an opportunity to become a volunteer reader.

Ever since the quiz show “Says You!” first began airing on KUOW, I have been a regular listener, and I’ve lost count of the times when I said how much I would love to play that game myself. Creator-host Richard Sher noted that the idea for the show came when he was visiting Seattle in 1990 and was in the audience for “Potluck,” a radio show I produced. In February 2015, Richard passed away, and one of the panelists took on temporary hosting duties.

Later that year, they were recording in Seattle, and one of the panelists took ill between the Saturday and Sunday tapings. I was called on to be a guest panelist that day with about four hours’ notice. It went so smoothly that they asked me on as

an occasional guest panelist, which led to shows in Utah, Indiana and Illinois — the last of these presenting me with the opportunity to be the guest host for one show. It seems I was unofficially being auditioned, and as of April 2017, yours truly has been named as the new host of “Says You!” I’m thrilled at the opportunity and am looking forward to many years of being able to lead “the smarties at the party.” Better yet, I can keep living in Seattle, work weekends at KUOW, and still read for WTBBL. I’ve done a wide range of books, including science volumes for kids, biographies of Puget Sound residents, and fiction from local authors, as well as annual reports for WTBBL, and the audio version of Washington state voter guides.

Says Me: Keep reading and listening!

Gregg Porter

Thanks to the more than 100 donors who gave to WTBBL through Give BIG this year on May 10th!

We surpassed our $10,000 goal, and also received a $2,500 Dollars for Change grant!

WTBBL receives many donations in memory of a loved one or friend as a meaningful way of celebrating their life. We are honored by these gifts and will forever remember these dear friends, patrons, family members, donors, partners and colleagues.

Questions? Please contact Laura Mott at (360) 902-4171 or [email protected].
