Healing God reach out to us now
and make us well.
Heal our hearts and the hearts we have hurt
by our faithlessness and neglect.
Through the gift of your Spirit awaken us to the new life you offer,
rooted in your compassion, justice and love,
so that we may become instruments of
your healing goodness. We make this prayer through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Look What Blew into Town Did it really happen the way the story is told? Who would not
give anything to have been there? But maybe we have been
there. Maybe we have met people who were so open to the
mysterious power of the Spirit of God that they were able to
accomplish things they never thought they could. Maybe at
times even we, too, have been so moved by that mysterious
Spirit. Is it possible that we are mistaken about what is truly
mysterious or Spirit-driven? Is it possible that we fail to see the
mystery of God in everyday life?
This is not to say that nothing extraordinary happened on that
Pentecost day. It certainly did! People who kept a low profile
out of fear of facing the same deadly fate as their leader seemed
to rush out onto the street and proclaim that leader’s mighty
acts. What has happened to them? How is such a reversal of
behavior to be described? It happens that when something won-
drous occurs we often use exaggerated images and superla-
tive language in an attempt to capture the astounding char-
acter of the event. To embellish language does not mean
that the event was not amazing. It means that it was so
amazing that we are at a loss to describe or explain it. We
are, after all, talking about the dynamic Spirit of God that
can completely change people. This is the same Spirit we received at baptism. Are we open to have it
change us?

A Word from Pope Francis As he did on Pentecost, the Lord wants to work one of the greatest miracles we can
experience; he wants to turn your hands, my hands, our hands, into signs of
reconciliation, of communion, of creation. He wants your hands to continue
building the world of today. And he wants to build that world with you.

Cemetery Collection: June 7
The upkeep of our cemeteries, the final resting place of
our loved ones, is the duty and responsibility of all
Christians. The Cemetery Collection provides the
funding to maintain the five Catholic Cemeteries
(Belvedere, Mt. Carmel, Holy Sepulcher, Kilbride and
Gate of Heaven). The aesthetic presentation of these
sacred grounds are directly dependent upon
contributions received.
WHERE IS GOD IN THE MIDDLE OF
THIS PANDEMIC?
If you have been asking questions about how to
make meaning in these uncharted waters that we
are in, you are not alone. If you've asked where
God is, or how you might hear God's voice, others
are asking the same questions.
If you would like to take part in an online discus-
sion about your own experiences and how it all
relates to God and faith, the Redemptorist Adult
Faith Formation Team (Fr. Tony Bidgood, CSsR,
Fr. David Louch, CSsR and Anne Walsh) would
like invite you to a virtual Zoom gathering of
people who want to share their thoughts, questions
and faith.
Simply email us at the following address:
and the Redemptorist Adult Faith Formation Team
will contact you about how to connect to the
virtual discussion. We look forward to hearing
from you. Peace!
Dear Parishioners,
I want to extend a word of thank you for your
moral and monetary support of my participation in
the recent “Heads Without Bed’s” campaign
for The Home Again Furniture Bank. The goal of
the campaign was to raise $15 000.00; as of today,
I am delighted to say that the campaign exceeded
that goal and raised, $16 305.00! More donations
are still coming in. So far, you and I raised $990 of
that amount … congratulations on making this a
success!
Just so you know, I did indeed sleep on the floor
last Friday night, in my sleeping bag and on a thin
camping air mattress, it was a good, albeit fitful
sleep … ha ha! We have helped ensure that people
will get a bed and needed furniture in our city. We
have also helped the Home Again Furniture Bank,
which is a local and ecumenical organization, be a
source and sign of God’s grace at work in our
community to help those in need.
Thank you and God bless you!
Sincerely,
Fr. Tony

Dear Parishioners, Greetings on this solemnity of Pentecost, the birthday of the Church.
Some months ago, when the news came that the World Health Organization
had declared the outbreak of Covid-19 to be a pandemic, we entered a time of uncer-
tainty, panic, stress, confusion and chaos. Companies, schools and churches were
closed, and we were required to stay home in self-isolation. The leaders of countries
had differing attitudes and reactions and came up with different approaches to dealing
with the pandemic: some were more political; some worked in collaboration with scien-
tists and medical officials; some focussed on the economy; some simply carried on as
usual. There was controversy. People were afraid or angry or sad.
But after a time, as we became better informed about what was going on, we began to feel
more settled and the situation began to stabilize. Many countries (including Canada) are dealing with
the COVID-19 crisis very well. As a result, gradually we are beginning to be able to go out, and busi-
nesses are re-opening, and so on. We see light at the end of the tunnel, and discover hope in our hearts!
Our experience in this time of the Covid-19 pandemic calls to mind the experience of Jesus’
disciples after his death. The disciples were devastated, afraid, sad, in panic, confused; they didn’t
know what to say, what to do, where to go. Then suddenly, on the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit
came upon them like wind and fire – and everything changed. They could understand one another;
they felt full of joy and hope; they knew what to say, what to do, where to go! This was a new begin-
ning; the disciples were on the verge of a new normal.
But who is this Holy Spirit who brought about such a dramatic change? How can we describe
the Holy Spirit and the mission of the Spirit? How does the Holy Spirit work? Is this same Holy Spirit
at work in the world now, in this time of pandemic? We can begin to find answers if we look to the
Scriptures.
In the Scriptures, there are some images used to describe the Holy Spirit: wind, water, tongues,
fire and dove. The Spirit is that Paraclete (a Greek word that is translated as Counselor, Comforter,
Helper, Encourager, or Enabler), who quietly works in us and through us every day behind the scenes
in the basic activities of our lives and the lives of the people around us. The Paraclete fully present
wherever people worship and pray in the name of Jesus. When we believe and trust in Jesus, we have
Faith through the Holy Spirit’s work in us, for the Holy Spirit is filling us. The Holy Spirit leads us to
turn away from our sinfulness and reassures us that we are still loved in spite of our sin.
We see the presence of the Holy Spirit in the sincere concern of a friend for our health; in the
generosity of those who give us so much help; in the inner strength we discover in times of crisis; in all
people who are working hard to face this pandemic; in those moments when we admit that we have
been wrong; in the making of a tough choice; in the resilience of people who face one difficult thing
after another without turning away; in the times when we have dared to love even though it was hard to
do so.
The Holy Spirit changes our lives, helping us to be more patient and forgiving, to seek new be-
ginnings in our relationships with one another and to let the power of God’s love have the final say
over the conflicts we get into. The Holy Spirit is available to us every moment of every day as we face
the choices between being self-centred or being the God-centered people whom God has created us,
and the Spirit has called us, to be in Christ.
Happy Pentecost Day. Many blessings to you and your families.
Fr. Ciro A Perez, CSsR
