A NOTE FROM BISHOP ZARAMA During the pandemic we the faithful have made every effort in the Diocese of Raleigh to exercise charity and compassion while safeguarding the health and welfare of one another. As we begin to emerge from the pandemic, we have a unique opportunity to give even greater witness as a Catholic community of believers. May our continued return to Mass provide us with even greater

awareness of the beauty and wonder of our faith and the importance of our relationship with one another as the body of Christ. Bishop Zarama has continued to dispense the faithful from their Sunday obligation. While this dispensation is applicable to all, it is continued primarily for the elderly, sick, those with pre-existing health conditions or other vulnerable people.

SAINTS OF THE DAY Nov 1 All Saints Day Fir st mentioned in the 4th century Eastern feast of All Martyrs (May 13) and attested to by St. Ephrem of Edessa, this feast came to be celebrated on other days as well in the East (e.g., Easter Friday and the Sunday after Pentecost, the day of its observance in some places in the West. In 609 or 610, the Roman Pantheon was dedicated on May 13 under the

title S. Maria and Martyres. Many see in this the origin of All Saints Day. For reasons which are unclear, Pope Gregory IV (827-844) transferred the feast from May to November1, adopting perhaps the English-Gallican practice dating from the first quarter of the 8th century.

Nov 2 Commemoration of all the Faithful Departed (All Souls’ Day) Rooted in ancient Chr istian tradition (2nd century and Tertullian), St. Odilo of Cluny established a memorial of all the faithful departed in 988. It was accepted in Rome in the 13th century. Nov 3 Martin de Porres Died in 1639; born in Lima of a Spanish father and a black slave mother; OP lay brother who humbly ministered to the poor and the sick, especially African slaves; devoted to the Holy Eucharist; patron of social justice and of peoples of mixed races. Nov 4 Charles Borromeo Died in 1584 at age 46; cardinal and secretary of state at age 22 for his uncle, Pope Pius IV; implemented reforms of Trent in his diocese of Milan; founder of seminaries; held 5 provincial councils and 11 diocesan synods; patron of catechists and of catechumens.
