STARTING FROM SKETCH“It can take more than six months to create a new topiary,” says Eric Darden, Horticulturist for Epcot® Park. “Each one is a unique work of Disney art. And each one starts with the Disney Character Artists who create dozens of sketches of poses. They are key to everything.” The sketches include 360 degree views so that every angle is clearly defined. From the final approved pose, a Disney sculptor creates a maquette (a small sculpture). From there, a casting of the Character is made to use as reference for the next step in the process.

FRAMING THE VISIONNext the welders go to work creating a steel understructure. “Our welders have a keen sense of artistry,” Darden says. “They work very closely with the Character Artists making sure each crook of an arm, fold in a skirt and turn of a head is perfect. There’s a lot of bending, cutting and starting over. Getting the steel structure right can take three to four months.”

PAINTING WITH PLANTSAfter the structures are complete, they are stuffed with sphagnum moss and the gardeners begin the intricate task of planting hundreds of thousands of plants ranging from succulents to vines and flowering plants. The planting process takes about two weeks. “Basically we are painting with the plants, using plants with different shades to create dimension and modeling,” Darden explains. “We have about 10 to 15 ‘go-to’ plants that we use frequently, but we are always looking for new plants to create the effects we want. It’s not uncommon for our gardeners to come in with suggestions inspired by plants they have seen in nearby nurseries. We’re open to trying anything.” EVER GREEN, EVER BEAUTIFUL“Topiaries take a long time to create,” Darden says. “So we take very good care of them. There are about 20 topiaries that we keep growing all year round and bring out to display for other festivals and shows. As for the others, we strip the plants, wrap the frames carefully and store them until it’s time to start preparing for the next Flower and Garden Festival. This year, many favorites, which have been on hiatus for several years, will be returning including a 14-foot-high Goofy at the entrance to Epcot® Park. Also this year, the Characters are going to be celebrating color,” Darden adds, “so the topiaries will be surrounded by beds of vibrant hues. It’s going to be a very vivid Festival this year!”

COLORFUL COLLABORATION“To me, the Guests don’t see the best part of the Festival—and that’s the teamwork it takes to get it all done,” Darden says. “Most of us have other projects going on simultaneously, but we all love working on the Festival. Our job year round is to keep the Parks beautiful and pleasant to be in, but during the Flower & Garden Festival our work is front and center. It is so gratifying to see Guests getting excited about what we do. It gives us all a tremendous sense of pride.”

“Each topiary is a unique work of Disney art.”

— Eric Darden, Horticulturist Epcot® Park

Upscale meets convenience at the newly-refurbished Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel® & Spa at the Disneyland® Resort.

How do you take an upscale hotel that is already “grand” and make it even more so? You start by asking Guests what they need and want according to Dan Coleman, General Manager, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel® & Spa.

“Our Guests told us that they love the hotel, but we also learned that their expectations have changed since the hotel opened in 2001,” Coleman says. “One of the critical things we heard was the need to stay connected easily. So we’ve upgraded the Wi-Fi system, replaced televisions with new models and increased the number of outlets for Guests’ personal electronic devices.” Guests will also appreciate the extra storage space, centralized beverage stations and additional lighting.

“We realized we needed to refresh the overall room environment, so we have brightened the décor,” Coleman says. The spacious lobby has also been refurbished for a more family-room like environment.

If you’re ready to lounge by the pools, you’ll find new decking and pool interiors, as well as six larger cabanas that you can rent for the day, complete with new furnishings and larger televisions that can be seen from poolside. You can dive in and indulge!

And what could be better than stepping from the hotel straight into Disney California Adventure® Park for the Food & Wine Festival this spring? Hotel Guests also enjoy early morning entry every day of their stay at Disney California Adventure® Park or Disneyland® Park during Extra Magic Hour (valid Theme Park admission and hotel key card required).6 And if great dining is on your vacation menu, you’ll enjoy Cardmember savings of 10% off select dining locations most days, including a laughter-filled Character Breakfast at the Storytellers Café.2

“Basically the refurbishment has been about creating a comfortable place with all the conveniences of home and still keeping the beauty of the Arts and Crafts style for which the hotel is known,” Coleman concludes. “I hope Guests will feel as if Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel® & Spa is their home away from home.”

Celebrate Lā Makuahine at Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa, Ko Olina, Hawai‘i.

For the third year, Aulani Resort is saying a big “mahalo” (thank you) to moms with a full month of special events and experiences designed especially to honor and celebrate them.

“Honoring our mothers is a big part of the Hawaiian culture,” says Kahulu De Santos, Cultural Advisor for Aulani Resort. “Even the name of this celebration, ‘Mahalo Mama,’ has a special meaning. Mothers are the foundation of any family. They connect us from generation to generation by passing on family stories and traditions.”

From breakfast in bed to luxurious spa treatments, make May the month of celebrating mom. Start by treating her to dinner at one of Aulani Resort’s amazing restaurants. Then give her more happy memories by treating her to these additional special experiences. All this pampering is a perfect way to say “mahalo” to mom.

Say Mahalo Mama!

CONNECT THROUGH DANCE “At the ‘Ohana Hula Program’ we celebrate our bonds,” De Santos says. The keiki (children) can make a card for their moms using Hawaiian designs and words, as well as craft a lei po‘o (head lei) to crown mom. (Sounds like a perfect picture-taking opportunity.) Then the family learns to dance the “Aulani Hula” together. “It’s lovely to see the moms wearing their lei and dancing with their children,” De Santos says. “It’s a beautiful moment of celebrating the joy of being together.”

CRAFT A KEEPSAKE At the Pau Hana Room, kids can craft a Hawaiian-inspired photo frame or other keepsake with objects natural to the islands. “The Pau Hana Room is an enjoyable place of coming together to play and learn and be enriched by the Hawaiian culture,” De Santos explains. “It’s a place to play music, sing, create crafts and art and just enjoy being together.” Just to be sure mom has a special photo to put in her new frame, Disney PhotoPass® offers exclusive discounts to mom during May.

PAMPER HER PERFECTLY Mom does so much for everyone every day! During May, she can be on the receiving end of relaxation and pampering with the “Mahalo Mama” Spa Package at Laniwai—A Disney Spa. The package includes Aulani Resort’s signature Lomilomi Massage, Cinderella Facial and Yummy Mummy Organic Pedicure. And if breakfast in bed sounds like a great way to start mom’s day, sign up for an exclusive private dining breakfast featuring delicious fresh fruits and other treats.

SNORKELING AND SUNNING A snorkeling adventure for mom at Rainbow Reef lets her experience the spectacular variety of native Hawaiian fish and ocean life. “From the native mountain plants used in our spa to snorkeling in our beautiful waters, we offer mom a Hawaiian experience which takes her from the mountains to the sea,” says De Santos.

When socially awkward Meg Murry, her brilliant younger brother, Charles Wallace and friend Calvin O’Keefe are summoned to find Meg and Charles’ missing father, the three embark on a perilous quest across the universe aided by a trio of guides with unusual powers: Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Who and Mrs. Which. “I loved these characters when I read the book as a child,” says producer James Whitaker. “They made an indelible impression on me. They’re funny, they’re wise and above all, they’re engaged in seeking out the good, fighting the darkness spreading across the universe and bringing back light and hope.”

Mrs. Whatsit—The Newbie “I was a huge fan of this book when I was growing up,” says actor Reese Witherspoon, who portrays Mrs. Whatsit, the youngest of the three celestials. Clocking in at only 60 million years old (give or take a few years), Mrs. Whatsit is thrilled to be on her first mission. “She’s giddy with excitement,” says Whitaker. “Reese is so spirited and humorous, she was the perfect choice to capture Mrs. Whatsit’s energy and spirit,” adds Ava DuVernay, the film’s director. “I wanted to capture a sense of innocence

combined with great power and precision. Reese is perfect.” At times the vivacious and lively Mrs. Whatsit’s relative youth makes her a bit more overly enthusiastic and more impetuous than the other celestials, but there’s a serious side to her as well. “Perhaps because Mrs. Whatsit is the youngest of the celestials, she is able to connect with Meg on a very personal level,” Whitaker says. “She is the one who finds ways to push Meg to get beyond her fear and self-doubt. And she

introduces the young girl to the power of her faults and helps her to understand that she can actually harness her impatience and temper and use them as strengths.”

Mrs. Who—The Most Quotable “Mindy Kaling was the first person DuVernay had in mind when she began casting,” Whitaker says. “She loved Mindy as a comedic force.” Kaling uses that witty talent to great effect as Mrs. Who, a guide

who speaks almost exclusively in quotes ranging from serious and penetrating to wildly offbeat and humorous.” For someone who is incredibly chatty off screen, being limited to expressing my character mostly through quotes was a bit challenging,” Kaling admits with a laugh.

“Mrs. Who is connected to all the great warriors against the darkness—the artists, musicians, poets and philosophers of all humanity,” Whitaker explains. “She helps Meg and the others see that there are others who have fought the darkness before them and that they are not alone.”

Mrs. Which—The Wisest “There just was no other possible choice to portray Mrs. Which, the charismatic leader of the three celestials, than Oprah Winfrey,” says Whitaker. “As the most senior of the threesome, Mrs. Which is the most knowledgeable with a greater understanding of the universe. Because of her experience, she has a longer, wider view.”

Readers of the books will recall that because of all the time she has been amongst the galaxies, Mrs. Which has a bit of trouble materializing in human form. “We held onto some of that in the film,” Whitaker says. But curious audiences will have to wait to see for themselves how her transformation takes place. “Oprah is such a soulful human being herself, she brings depth, soul and dimension to the role. It’s a beautiful performance,” says Whitaker. “I had the best time I can ever remember having on a film,” Winfrey says. “Who wouldn’t want to be cast as the wisest woman in the universe?”

“Creating the worlds and characters author Madeleine L’Engle first gave all of us was an incredible journey and adventure,” Whitaker says. “It has been both challenging and inspiring. It offers some great messages about empowerment, hope, joy and love that I think speaks to us all.”

“I hope audiences will take away a deep sense of the

healing power of love from the film and all the hope

that brings.”

— Ava DuVernay, Director

was write more music for the character of Kristoff,” Lopez says. But the strong, sardonic character comes into his own on stage singing “What Do You Know About Love?,” a groove-based duet for Kristoff and Anna as they clash philosophically about the nature of love. In Act II, the song reprises as a rustic lullaby and becomes “You’re What I Know About Love,” when Kristoff realizes he has fallen in love with Anna.

“COLDER BY THE MINUTE”“Action sequences like chases tend to bea challenge when translating to the stage,”Anderson-Lopez says. “We had to figure out how to handle the final chase scene across the ice. There was no way to create a literal storm on stage. It seemed like such a huge, crazy undertaking and we put it off for as long as possible until we couldn’t delay any longer,” Lopez adds. “Somehow, thankfully, the ball got rolling and this huge musical sequence we’d been puzzling and procrastinating over for months got drafted in one evening of writing and recording. It was a really intense and rewarding thing to be a part of. And it’s one of our favorite parts of the show.” Anderson-Lopez has another favorite moment as well. “My new favorite song is a quiet moment with Anna, called ‘True Love.’ Night after night, Patti Murin, who plays Anna, has unlimited access to her own vulnerability and she helps me see Anna’s super power as a regular, fragile human being.”

From a lighthearted dual of words between Kristoff and Anna to Elsa’s soul searching musical revelations, FROZEN the Broadway Musical takes the world of Frozen to new musical heights. “People who love the movie will want to buy a ticket to the musical, but once they are in the theatre, they are going to come away having seen—and heard—something unique and inspired by a story they know and love,” says Levy. “It’s a wholly new work of art. I think it is going to shatter expectations about what Frozen is.”

Experience New Heights in Musical Storytelling Songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez talk about expanding the beloved film score of Frozen for the new FROZEN the Broadway Musical.

Shimmering visual beauty. Unforgettable characters. A story that touches the heart. And music—a lot more music. If you and your family are among the millions who love Disney’s animated film Frozen, you’ll be astounded by the richness of FROZEN the Broadway Musical opening this February.

Adapting an 85-minute film into a Broadway production is a challenging task, and music plays a critical role. The songwriting duo of Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, who wrote the songs for the animated film, knew they had a veritable “North Mountain” of work ahead. But it was also an exciting opportunity to bring more depth and insight to the characters’ personalities and to the story.

“The songs help reveal so many more emotional layers that can only happen in live theatre,” says Caissie Levy (Elsa). “They emphasize the ‘beating heart’ of the story.”

“DANGEROUS TO DREAM”“It’s challenging to pull off a close-up of a character like you see in an animated film in a live stage performance. The best equivalent is giving the character a song to communicate all the subtle emotions that a film can give in a few seconds of a close-up shot,” Lopez explains. “‘Dangerous to Dream,’ which Elsa sings at her coronation, communicates her anxieties. It’s also what we call the ‘I want’ song, which tells the audience more about the character’s dreams and desires. Elsa’s whole life has been about concealing her powers and trying not to accidentally harm her sister with those powers. This song lets us learn what Elsa would want if she had a normal life.”

“WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT LOVE?”Because of the length of an animated film, sometimes theresimply isn’t time to give everyone their own musical moment.“One thing we wished we could have done in the animated film

“Musical, emotional storytelling is the most powerful tool you have on stage.”
