RE: ENERGIZING NEWARK
Serving as a major business and transportation hub Newark should be a prosperous city. On a large scale Newark can be seen as a functional city, with a busy airport and a bustling downtown center. The quality and value of housing are rising, and most schools’ graduation rate is comparable to major cities nationwide. However Newark is home to high crime, unemployment, and poverty. The crime rate is one of the highest in the nation. Over one third of the people are in poverty and the best paying jobs don’t belong to Newark’s own residents. Most neighborhoods are bound physically by highways, major roads, transportation - but the real boundaries are not the physical. There are social boundaries that are invisible to the naked eye and are less apparent in surveys and data sheets.
Looking back on its history we see Newark has always been an active city. Settlement along the Passaic river begins, churches are built, there is growth. The era of church and colony helps spark the beginning of the township of Newark. The location draws industry, railroad, and trade. The port of Newark becomes one of the most active on the east coast. People are once again drawn to Newark for opportunity. This era of industry and trade causes growth in the new city, and it expands once again. The inland areas on the outskirts of the city become highly residential. These areas become suburbs. Inward migration of people begins to slow resulting in an era of commerce and sprawl within the city. These Newark suburbs don’t last long as they become townships of their own or annexed to a neighboring one. The city is in decline, riots break out, people begin leave. However the backbones of the city, the fi nancial downtown, the airport, the railroad, the port, help to keep the city alive during an era of urban decline.
In recent years there have been attempts at re-energizing the city. New sports venues, face-lifts to various infrastructure, all addressing the large scale. The issues at hand can only be seen through a smaller microscope. The unemployment rate at 11% is higher than the national average, as is the rate of crime at 5% and poverty level at 33%. There is a lack of motivation developing throughout the city. Rentals take up 70% of housing. Single parents make up 1 out of every 3 households. Over 20% of population hasn’t completed high school. The people of this city need a new plan for success, a little bit of guidance to kick off the era of Re: Energizing Newark.

IN CONCLUSION...
WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?
“...newark’s successful past slowly created the social problems it now faces...”
-resident of a neighboring city name withheld
Issues at hand:
30% of the population is in poverty
70% high school education or less
1 out of every 3 households is a single parent
16% of housing units are not occupied
5% of industrial buildings are abandoned
500 acres of land are taken up by empty lots
70% of housing is rented
Solution in mind: A self suffi cient system specifi cally targeting the
residents in need and areas that will re: energize the city.
Separated into stages to provide necessary elements for
each part function.
