Matches are Tools for Adults,Not Toys

Each year, many fires arestarted accidentally bychildren playing withmatches or lighters. Youngchildren should learn thatmatches and lighters aretools for adults, not toys forchildren. A fun way to teachthis lesson is to have yourchildren collect picturesfrom magazines of thingsthat are safe to play with,such as dolls or buildingblocks, and things that arenot safe to play with, such as matches,lighters, and candles. Then you can playa game with the cut-out pictures byplacing them in a box, drawing them outone at a time, and having the childrensay whether the object is safe or unsafeand rewarding the children for correctanswers.

Get Out and Stay OutDuring a fire, young children often

instinctively try to hide from smoke andflames. Sometimes they even hide fromfirefighters. Let your children hear thesound the smoke alarm makes, andexplain that the sound means that theyshould get out and stay out of the

building. Also, let your children see afirefighter dressed in protective gear(either in a picture or in person) andexplain that a firefighter will help in afire.
