WE RECYCLE!

STARK COUNTY DISTRICT #100 belongs to the Funding Factory Recycling Program. Bring your empty inkjet cartridges and old cell phones to any school offi ce, and we will earn points, which can be redeemed for new technology equipment or cash for our schools. Cell phone adapters and bag phones not accepted.

Stark County High School is now offering free, after-school tutoring

opportunities for interested high school students.

Each weekday afternoon from 3:15 to 4:15, a teacher will be scheduled to work with interested students in the HS library on questions, homework, credit recovery, etc. At the end of each tutoring session, if needed, transportation home will be provided for students. The program is being funded through a federal grant called the 21st Century Community Learning Center Grant, and there will be no cost to the students that participate.

This federal grant was written and secured by our local Regional Offi ce of Education in Atkinson. The three-year grant will provide resources to pay for tutors, a site coordinator and eventually, additional after-school programs for students and parents.

Bryan Blanks, a graduate of Wethersfield High School and

Monmouth College, has been hired by the Regional Offi ce in a partnership with District 100, to serve as site coordinator at SCHS. It will be Bryan’s job to survey students and parents, and to determine which after-school (or summer-time) programs might be of most interest and most benefi t to them. According to Bryan “the 21st

Century program is an excellent way to increase academic performance and to build upon skills students can take out into the workforce and community.” After-school tutoring is just the fi rst phase of a program.

Because one of the goals of the grant is to develop programs for students AND parents, Bryan is

already working with teachers and peers to come up ideas for potential night classes for parents to increase skill levels in regards to computer programs, iPads, etc.

During the week of Jan. 9th, surveys from Bryan were sent out to SCHS parents. If you received a survey form and have already fi lled it out and returned it – thank you. If you have not returned your survey, please fi ll it out and return it to Bryan Blanks at the High School, 418. S. Franklin, in Toulon. We look forward to your input and your participation as this new program develops and evolves.

And once again, thank you for helping to make our schools, “a place where everybody is somebody.”

Why the i?New technology is available every day. Sometimes

it is hard to keep up with what’s what. Hot items on students’ Christmas lists this year included many new electronic devices such as iPhones, iPods and iPads. Some of you are probably already taking advantage of Apple’s new devices, but you may not be aware that schools around the world are, too.

One useful device is the iPad. The iPad is a tablet computer designed by Apple primarily for use of audio-visual media (i.e. books, periodicals, movies, music, games and web content). It was introduced on Jan. 27, 2010 by Apple’s then-CEO Steve Jobs. Its size and weight fall between a smartphone and a laptop computer, and it runs the same operating system as the iPod Touch and iPhone. This device is controlled by a multi-touch display with a virtual onscreen keyboard and uses Wi-Fi connection to access the Internet.

Are you wondering why schools are turning to iPads? Well, they offer a variety of benefi ts that may surprise you…

The 4 C’s– Students can do it all. They can connect to the world, communicate using technology, collaborate with peers and create products. Teachers can move past rote learning of content to include communication, collaboration, complex thinking, information gathering as well as processing and building strategies.

Learning with technology can happen anywhere. It can happen in a classroom, at the dining room table, on a bus, on a fi eld trip. With a battery life of eight to ten hours and a weight of just over a pound, the iPad offers more portability and less startup time than laptops or netbooks.

Ease of operation. Young children fi nd the touch screens easier to use than a keyboard or mouse. The larger screens and icons are easier for children or students with disabilities to hit than those of the iPod Touch or iPhone.

Improved Organization. The iPad can become the textbook, the worksheets, the schedule and the assignment notebook. It functions as

an e-reader of textbooks and allows for students to produce work utilizing word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations and submit work via email.

Enhanced Books. iPad tablets are capable of offering enhanced ebooks featuring images, video and audio. These elements are impossible to include in print or in a standard ebook. Students can highlight text, take notes in the margin and access a dictionary directly within the book itself. This offers more that a traditional book and can be kept current without the purchase of new texts.

Student engagement. The most important factor in learning is student engagement. iPads create highly interactive classrooms. That makes for a more engaging learning environment.

Differentiated learning. Students work at different levels and develop at different rates. Teachers can easily adapt curriculum through use of apps that provide varied levels of instruction. Apps help personalize instruction for students whether gifted or remedial. Apps? That’s short for “applications” or specialized computer programs.

Learning Styles. There are three learning modalities that students work through: visual, auditory and kinesthetic (or touch). All technology options provide fantastic visual and auditory learning opportunities. However, only the iPad addresses all three.

Preparation for the future. The National Education Technology Plan, a federal plan for applying advanced technologies to improving education, recommends that every student have 24-7 access to a device that can tap the Internet. We live in the “Age of Technology.” Students need to utilize technology in school to be prepared for future careers.

iPad technology is changing education. Technology is not a thing of the future, it’s happening today.

Agriscience students (from left) Christian Morrissey, Ian Davis, and Blaze Porter conduct an experiment on using the inclined plane during a recent class at Stark County High School.

In December, we read many Christmas-themed books, and students were able to work on a Christmas packet of activities. One of the books the K-2nd grades read was The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg. We visited the Polar Express web site, and students each received a Polar

Express packet of activities to do.

Since the weather has turned colder, we have been reading some books about snow and some of the things that can happen during the winter months.

The K-2nd grades have read books such as: The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats, Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson, Snowballs by Lois Ehlert, and Old Bear by Kevin Henkes.

Flat Stanley has been on a few interesting trips this month. The third graders have enjoyed hearing about his adventure to New York City and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade with some of the

SCHS cheerleaders. He also went to see “The Nutcracker” in Chicago. Some of you may be planning a get-away this winter. Please remember that Flat Stanley would love to go along on your adventure, and our students would love to hear all about it. If you would be willing to take Flat Stanley along on a trip, please contact the SCES library at 695-5181 or [email protected]

Mrs. Smith’s class is just finishing up Stanley Flat Again and will be voting on which of the Flat Stanley books they will read next. Mrs. Strode’s class has voted to read Stanley and the Magic Lamp.

The fourth grades have

started reading A Friendship f o r Today by Pa t r i c i a McKissack. It is the story of fourth grader, Rosemary Patterson, who is among the first African-American students in her town to enroll in what had once been an all-white school. It teaches us about the struggles Rosemary has at her new school and her determination to make a friend.

The fifth grades are still enjoying Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great by Judy Blume and reading about all the adventures Shelia Tubman has when she spends her summer in Tarrytown.

The date has been set for the Blue Stem award party

in the library! On Feb. 23 students in third-fifth grades who have read four or more books from the list of books that have been nominated for the Illinois Blue Stem Award will be invited to attend a party in the library where we will have snacks and vote for our favorite book from the list. Our votes will be tallied and sent into the state to be counted with the votes of students from all over the state. We will also announce the winning book for our school.

This month the students who have met the requirement to be invited to the party are: Shai Draminski, Christopher Roark, Madison McDermott,

Faith Rucker, Tori Lomelino, Dane Williams and Patrick Crowley.

The cold and snowy weather is the perfect time to curl up with a good book. On a snowy day, make your way to the library.

Mary Beth KellySCES Librarian

As always we are having a lot of fun in the elementary library!
