Hi-Tor will soon begin publicizing the “naming oportunities” for the new shelter. This information is already available on the Rebuild Hi-Tor website. Individuals or families can purchase anything from a cat cage or dog kennel to the entire shelter itself, and have their name proudly displayed across the building! With the way the shelter looks now, it often deters potential families from adopting because they feel uncertain of where these pets are coming from, which is a shame. Franchino states, “I want people to drive up to this facility and think, ‘I want to adopt an animal out of there.’” Some have inquired about how the new facility will be maintained, with all of the extra costs involved such as added electricity. Franchino answers that the building will be solar powered, an eco- friendly, “green” building, and that all of the current fundraisers will continue over time. “There are many innovative things that can be done to keep funds coming in,” he said, “a golf outing, carnival, events like our 3-mile run/walk...these fundraisers will stay in place as permanent annual events.” To answer the concerns of others about how this impressive building will even come to fruition, Franchino informed the crowd that he already has a list of contractors willing to do the construction and also noted that it will all be done under one General Contractor. Big names like Home Depot have agreed to partner with Hi-Tor by donating items like cement and chain link fencing. A construction committee will be formed down the road. A final concern of some skeptics is the clearing of parkland to build the shelter. Franchino told the group, “This county currently has 131 acres of parkland. We’re asking for five. We want this building to be up front and center, where it can be seen, not buried far back the way it is now.” Also to be considered is room for parking, handicap accessibility, walking trails and more. Rockland County is full of animal lovers who are determined to build a shelter that we can be proud of and that our pets deserve. No one is more determined than Franchino, who ended the meeting by saying, “We will not stop until this building is built.” DeDICATeD TO THe ReBuILDING eFFORTS OF ROCkLAND’S ONLy ANIMAL SHeLTeR rebuildREP ORTER the Here We Go! The final of five town meetings for Rebuild Hi-Tor took place in Ramapo last week. Chair of Fundraising Don Franchino says he plans to revisit each of the towns for a followup meeting when needed. Franchino kicked things off by reminding everyone of the need for committee members and stressed that “the more people we have on the committees, the less tasks each person has to do”. Volunteering for even the smallest tasks can be a help because it takes that task off someone else’s list who may already have their hands full. Volunteers can visit the Rebuild Hi-Tor website for more information about the different committees.

There are many ways that families can get together and pitch in for this cause. The Brick Pavers, which are explained in greater detail later in this newsletter, are a wonderful way for families to get together and honor a special person or pet, or give special recognition to anything they choose, by making it a permanent mark at the new Hi-Tor shelter. Another way families can help is by sponsoring buckets in local businesses. Find out more about how easy this helpful task is later in this issue. Last, families can attend events and support fundraisers by eating at local establishments on “Hi-Tor nights,” attending our 3-mile run/walk on October 28th, and supporting other upcoming initiatives such as Cuts for Mutts, a day in which local hair salons will donate a portion of their proceeds to the rebuild efforts.

Franchino states, “I want people to drive up to this facility and think, ‘I want to adopt an animal out of there.’”

Some have inquired about how the new facility will be maintained, with all of the extra costs involved such as added electricity. Franchino answers that the building will be solar powered, an eco-friendly, “green” building, and that all of the current fundraisers will continue over time. Big names like Home Depot have agreed to partner with Hi-Tor by donating items

like cement and chain link fencing.

No one is more determined than Franchino, who ended the meeting by saying, “We will not stop until this building is built.”

A SucceSSful Volunteer KicK-off Meeting in nAnuetMany eager volunteers came out to Nanuet High School on October 2nd for the organizational meeting for Rebuild Hi-Tor volunteers. Donald Franchino, Chairman for Rebuild Hi-Tor, spoke to the crowd about how the project is coming together. Paver orders are coming in, the volunteers who man the table at the Palisades Mall are getting the word out to the community, and our newsletter is keeping everyone up-to-date and informed.

This first step in getting organized was naming committee chairs. Volunteers were asked to head committees. Catherine Planeta volunteered to Chair the Grants Committee, while Claudia Rothman will be overseeing the Correspondence Committee. Many thanks to these volunteers! To the volunteer who agreed to chair the Fundraising Committee - we didn’t get your contact info! Please contact [email protected]. And thank you so much for volunteering.

A new committee was also formed by volunteer Magdalena Truchan: the Social Media Committee, a very important one in this digital age. Other committees include Public Relations, events, Political Outreach and Corporate Outreach (Chair is Kathleen Brennan).

Committee Chairs received their volunteer lists following the meeting, and will be contacting those volunteers in the nearfuture to present opportunities. (If you would like to volunteer for a specific committee, please email [email protected].)

Franchino also announced at the meeting that he and Roberta Bangs, President of the Board of Directors for Hi-Tor Animal Care Center, would attend a meeting at the County executive C. Scott Vanderhoef’s Office the next day on October 3rd. At press time, Franchino reported that the meeting went well. At issue is the land that is wanted for the new shelter which is currently parkland. Franchino says there should be no problem with de-parking the land that is needed to make way for a new shelter.

Franchino explained that a decision has to happen now, because so many donations are on the line. Companies and people want to be sure that this project is going to happen before they commit thousands of dollars to it. He assured the group that he already has over $200,000 of promised donations if he can secure the land.

People have asked what would be done if this project didn’t come to fruition; if the new shelter isn’t built. Will the donated money be returned? Franchino replies to them, “everything is coming together to get this thing built; it never even entered my mind to need to return the money.” Plans are coming in for the new shelter, being submitted by various architects. And there are so many people and groups in the community who want to see the new shelter built.

Franchino stated that he would go back to all of the five towns of Rockland after the first of the year to hold another series of town meetings, to update the public about the progress of the Rebuild effort. He stressed that one of the easiest ways the public can become involved is by adopting a business: placing a Rebuild Hi-Tor donation bucket in a store and then going back weekly to collect the funds and then send a check to the Rebuild P.O. Box. All volunteers who place buckets, as well as the businesses where they are placed, will be recognized on our website and in our newsletter. All you need is an empty coffee can or other suitable container. Please go to the “Forms” link on www.RebuildHiTor.org to get the labels for the canisters and the letter to approach businesses with.

A final item on the agenda was to announce that Rebuild Hi-Tor is starting a matching gifts program and will be creating an employee matching form so that employers with donation matching programs can give to Rebuild Hi-Tor. Look for it soon on our website!

SPOTLIGHT ON...awesome volunteer works suffern farmers’ market

elyse manning her pet-friendly table at the Suffern Farmers’ Market.

Volunteer Elyse Stoller, with her mother Sheila Stoller and her friends, including Candice Ruppert, Meg Wilson and Meagan Phillips, have been manning a table at the Suffern Farmers’ Market for the past couple of weekends for Rebuild Hi-Tor. The Suffern Farmers’ Market is a family friendly market with dozens of vendors, children’s activities and live entertainment weekly. The market takes place weekly on Saturdays from 8:30am–1:00pm, June 9–November 17, rain or shine. It is located in downtown Suffern, Ny, parking lot A at the bottom of Lafayette Avenue on the corner of Orange and Wayne Avenues. This past weekend they have expanded to Tuxedo on Saturday and Haverstraw on Sunday. Rebuild Hi-Tor thanks the Stollers and all the volunteers for their dedication to Rebuild Hi-Tor!

Would you like to get involved? We would like to expand to other markets. Possible markets pending permission and manpower include:

Saturday: Mahwah, nJSunday: Piermont Thursday: nyack

if you would like to volunteer, please email Elyse Stoller at [email protected]. This is a short-term volunteer opportunity, as we only have a few weeks more until the markets close, usually around Thanksgiving. But it is a great way to help Rebuild Hi-Tor!

MALL RATS! (And cAtS...And dogS...And More!)

Volunteer Liz Steele reports, “I relieved quite a crew at the Palisades at 4:00 on Saturday. Lori Elia and andrea Doak took the 2:00–4:00 shift with lots of help from young volunteers Jenna, Hannah and Rebecca Doak, Madelyn Elia, Christiana nisco and nicole McGuire. These young helpers were tireless in their efforts of handing out flyers and collecting donations. The four hour total was over $350!”

The table at the Palisades Mall for Rebuild Hi-Tor will be suspended temporarily after Thanksgiving, in order to give other non-profits a chance at the location. Rebuild Hi-Tor will return to the mall in January 2013.

We want to have a major presence outside stores the day after Thanksgiving. Please volunteer to promote Rebuild Hi-Tor on this important day. Contact Mary Lenahan at [email protected] with your availability. Thank you so much for your help!

If you’ve volunteered your time at the mall, we’d love to see your photos. Please send to [email protected] so we can get the word out about our wonderful helpers!
