Good morning and welcome to Sunset! Whether you are still worshiping from home or you decided to come to the building today, we are so glad you’ve joined us! May God be glorified and we be edified by our worship together to-day!
Happy Father’s Day to all our dads out there! Many of us have been profoundly shaped by the fathers in our lives, and today we say thank you. Thank you for the ways you serve, provide for, and spiritual lead your family. I also realize days like today can be difficult for some who don’t have a good relationship with their father, or maybe recently lost their father. If so, we want you to know that we love you and you certainly have a family at Sunset!
As things are beginning to open up and get back to normal, let’s all remember how it felt being separated from each other and cooped up at home for several weeks. I’ll bet for most of us it got old rather quickly! However, this has been and continues to be a way of life for many of our shut-ins. Can we let this very special part of the Sunset family know we love them and think about them of-ten? If you have the directory app, there is a list under “groups” that lists all 40 or so of those shut in and unable to get out. Whether it is a call or card or something else, let’s encourage this group!

CONTINUING PRAYER
YOUTH AND FAMILY Ephesians 4:26-27
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.
As I recognize this is not the perfect Father’s Day devotional, it is rather a contin-uation of our Youth Summer Class on Reflect. Our topic this week was anger. We learned no matter our personality, we handle frustrations, problems, and threats differently. We can bury our anger and let little things build up until they explode. We can ignore our anger, essentially doing anything to avoid conflict. Or we can let anger and frustration live right at the surface, where it is basically our first response. Obviously, our formative years have conditioned and shaped us and we’re likely some combination of these.
Consider what makes you angry and frustrated. Is it always one thing? Does it slowly build up? Or would you say, you rarely get angry or frustrated? Now con-sider how you have seen anger modeled by your parents. Any similarities? Are these similarities good? In the heat of the moment, maybe there are areas where we are still being shaped.
Our faith has transformed us. We are being molded into who God wants us to be. But that doesn’t mean his work in us is finished. Remember the prophet Jo-nah when he became angry still recognized God as gracious and compassion-ate, slow to anger, and abounding in love. Jonah really struggled with this be-cause he had been consumed by his anger. We often try to justify our anger with comparisons to Jesus’ anger in John 2, where he makes a whip and drives eve-ryone out of the temple courts. However, there is a stark difference between the two situations. One is anger that leads to sin while the other is anger that is right-eous. Jonah wanted the people of Nineveh destroyed even though they had re-pented. But Jesus was chasing thieves out of his Father’s house.
I’ll leave you with Romans 12:21, “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Chris Livingston
