Patrick grew up in Bridge street. He recalls as a small boy coming to Crumlin on the bar of his dads bicycle. His father came to fish in the quarry pools in the area, but went to Mass on the way in the old St. Agnes Church. Like any small boy he wanted to attend Mass in one of the galleries in the church, in particular the galleries overlooking the altar where he could look down on the priest. He told me there were only two rows of seats in the galleries to the left and right of the sanctuary. There is a model of the old church just inside the entrance to Father Kitt Court. Very little of the old church built in 1726 has survived, except for a few furnishings — a chalice, a font now inside the entrance where the shrine to St. Martin de Porres is in the present church and the sanctuary lamp which is one of the two lamps to the left and right of the tabernacle. Our baptismal records go back to 1840 which are today in the Parish Office. As time passes people with memories of being in the old church fade away. I very much regret that I was not more active in this regard when I arrived as Parish Priest of St Agnesthirteen years ago. This is the last chance perhaps to interview people with recollections of being in the church or perhaps making their First Holy Communion prior to 1935 when the new church opened in February of that year. I have never seen a photograph taken inside the old church. It is possible that some still survive and with your help we might recover such, or talk to some elderly people who have recollections of the old church like Patrick Cronin. When we celebrated the 75th Anniversary of the opening of the present St Agnes’, with your help we managed to discover the first person who was baptised in St Agnes’. She lived in Greystones. I am now asking for your assistance again. Please contact me if you can help. Father John 4550 955. Amen. Prayer on the Road to Knock. On August 30th we had our Annual Pilgrimage to Knock. It was a very successful event, blest with good weather. A number of people asked me if they might have a copy of the Morning Prayer which I said at the beginning of the journey. Copies are now available in the Parish Office. Fr John. Forty Hours Adoration. This annual occasion takes place this year on the coming weekend. On Monday September 17th Adoration will continue all day and conclude with evening Mass and Benediction at 7.00pm. We hope people will make the effort to attend and spend some time during the Forty Hours Adoration in St. Agnes Church. Health and Safety. It has come to our notice that a little girl had her hair singed while lighting a candle at the end of the church. However it highlights the need for vigilance and the importance of making sure that no child may light a candle unless under the direct supervision of a parent or guardian.
