Third Sunday in Lent, March 4, 2018 Exodus 20: 1-17; Psalm 19; 1 Corinthians 1:18-24; John 2:13-22
The story goes: A man promised himself that he would never say “No” to his children. He kept that promise. One beautiful sunny day, this man and his daughter went out for a walk. They strolled down the street, hand in hand, enjoying each other’s company. After a while the little girl let go of her fa-ther’s hand and began to skip ahead of him. Just a little ways ahead, she saw something sparkling on the sidewalk. She be-gan to run to get closer to see this sparkling thing. When her father recognized what his daughter saw, he shouted “NO!” But since she had never heard this word and didn’t know what it meant, she kept running. Her dad kept shouting NO, NO!” She kept running. The little girl arrived at the sparkling thing before her dad reached her; she bent down and picked it up. It was a live electrical wire. When God says “NO,” it is ALWAYS out of love for us. It’s time to listen to people who you trust because God uses their voic-es to speak to us. Lenten Blessings, Rev. Julia

The Mission of the Mount Carmel Baptist Church
is to teach, preach and interpret the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. Through the Power of The Holy
Spirit, we will strive to convert the lost and build
up the Body of Christ. We will further endeavor
to eradicate miseducation, prejudices, and all
forms of discrimination and their effects.
In order to accomplish this as a community of
faith, we must collectively strive to holistically
meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, social
and economic needs of our membership and
community. “Until the kingdoms of this world
become the Kingdom of Our Lord”, and Savior
Jesus Christ... “And He shall reign forever and
ever.”
Amen

Greetings Mount Carmel,
In the beginning of my pastorate this generous congregation embarked on a six month “Footsteps of Faith” financial campaign in order to pay off our air conditioner loan two years early, and to begin aggressively paying down the balance on our mortgage. For the first year of the campaign, I made weekly announcements about the amounts you had contributed. When that particular campaign was concluded, I reduced the frequency of my announcements about your giving, and I realize now that by giving you less frequent updates I may have mistakenly communicated that we have reached a state of financial sufficiency. Mt. Carmel, we still need your generous giving in order to be faith-ful to the ministries that to which God has called us. Therefore, in an effort to ensure that you are consistently informed about our financial health as a con-gregation, I have decided to include a monthly financial update in the Sunday bulletin.
Our operating budget for 2018 is $1.2 million dollars. Of that, $16,000 dollars every month is allocated for capital expenditures (also know as “capital expan-sion”), which is comprised of: our mortgage plus an additional mortgage pay-ment; our piano loan payment; and our monthly investment contribution.
During the month of February we gave $9,266 toward capital expenditures, which left us with a $6,734 deficit. Mount Carmel, I recall with great joy the indi-vidual and collective success we achieved during “The Footsteps of Faith” 2016 giving campaign—so I am confident that we can eliminate this deficit. Our prior efforts have proven that “we can do all things” when we set our minds to work together.
I humbly ask that as we give towards the work and ministry of the church, we do so generously and gladly, knowing that we are giving back to God a portion of what God has given to us. This will ensure that we will be able to be effective in our efforts to be “The Hearts and Hands of West Philadelphia.”
One Church Working Together,
Pastor
P.S. I understand that due to a logistical error some members may not have received their 2018 gift giving envelopes. If you have not received your enve-lopes, please contact the Church Office so we can make any needed updates to our database.
