AbstractInthisprojectthemainclientisSusi, anadultwheelchairuserwithamentalandphysicaldisability, and her assistants. The purpose of this project is to recommend a possiblesolution to using a wheelchair in rainy environments. The recommended design is anautomaticfolded&attachablepopupumbrellasystemthatisanintegrationofmultipleexiting solutions.Theanalysisof thedimensionof thedeignhasbeen conductedusingANSYS software. System analysis tools have been used to analyze the feasibility of thedesign.

1.0IntroductionThemainclientofthisprojectisanadultwheelchairusernamedSusiwhohasmentalandphysical disability. Susi and her assistants often struggle in the rain, with an umbrellacovering either the assistant or Susi. In this current process, protection from the rainand/orwindisinadequateandneedstobeimproved.
The design outcome of this project is an automatic folded & attachable wheelchairumbrellathatwillensurecoverageofboththewheelchairuserandtheassistantduringthebadweather.Thedesignoutcomeiseasytouseandaffordablefortheconsumers.

Insufficientcoverageaswell as equipmentmalfunctionplagueusersofwheelchairs aswell as theirassistants.CurrentlySusi, theclientof thisproject, strugglesparticularlyas she isbeingtransferred from car towheelchair in this environment.Designing a shelter that coversSusi, andthepersonwhoassistsher, whileitisrainingisthemainfocusofthisproject.

We then focused in on umbrellasspecifically as a design teamwe believedwe can provide an easy solutions than otheralternatives available in themarket. As such, our researchquestionbecame; "How canumbrellas be used to ensure that people with disabilities, as well as their assistants, remaindryinpoorweatherconditions."It isthisproblemthatthedesignteamtriedtosolvewiththisdesign.3.2SurveysandInterviews

4.0Solution:(KeyFeaturesoftheNewDesign)Thefinalsolutionistheautomaticfolded&attachablepopupumbrellasystemthathasbeen created by integrating several existing solutions. The umbrella system can bedividedintothreedifferentsubsystems;thedimensions, theautomaticfoldingoperationmechanismandtheattachmentmechanism.
4.1DescriptionoftheDimensions
Todeveloptheproduct, thedesignteamconsideredthecustomerrequirementsrecordedduring the interview. Client expectation of the product is to provide shelter fromrain/windand,atthesametime,beconvenienttouseandtohandle.
The main focus is given to particular dimensions in designing automatic folded &attachableumbrellasystem.Thosedimensionsareheightoftheproductwhenitattachedtothewheelchair,widthoftheumbrellaandtheweightoftheoverallproduct.
An automatic folded & attachable umbrella is designed to be high enough toaccommodateapersonofaverageheightandgiveextraspace ifneed formovement invertical direction such as lifting hands. Also the product has specific shape in form ofelongatedumbrellatoprotectbothusersfromtherainandatthesametimewideenoughto protect them from the wind (compare to conventional umbrellas), see Figure 1&2.Although,thesedimensionsaredrawnfromavailabledataonhumananthropometrics,athree dimensional prototype should be constricted and verified against a threedimensionalhumanmodel.

4.2AutomaticFoldingOperationMechanism
Theautomaticfoldingumbrellawillincludeamainrod,canopysupportingumbrellaribs,aslideelementandahandle.Atthetipoftherodtheumbrellaribsarepivotallyinstalled.Under the tip of the main rod the primary link rods are installed [Multi-folded full-automatic opening-closing umbrella, 2014]. Corresponding umbrella rib and eachprimary link rod are coupled using a secondary link rod. Themain rod also holds theslidemechanism, andthehandle installedatabottomendof themainrodholdsa linkmechanism[Ni,2014].Adiagramofthisset-upisincludedintheAppendixasFigure3
Themainrodincludesalinkelementandalinkmechanismcoupledtotheslideelement.Elasticallystretchableelementscoupletheslideelementwiththeprimarylinkrod.Thelinkmechanism isdrivenby the linkelement to slide the slideelement.Theelasticallystretchable elements are pulled to drive the primary link rods to unfold or fold theumbrellaribs[Chang,2014].
This will allow the umbrella to fold out like a normal umbrella but with a few smalldifferences.Duetothegeometryofthisumbrella, thefoldingmechanismwillconsistofan extra set of ribs on one side of the umbrella. This will allow for the automaticdeploymentoftheumbrellaandallowforonesidetobelargerthantheother.AdiagramoftheumbrellafoldingmechanismisshowninFigure4oftheAppendix.
4.3AttachmentMechanism
Theattachmentoftheumbrellaissupposedtobestableandeasytoinstall.
In our design, the umbrella is attached to one handle of thewheelchair by the 'Quickrelease mechanism' Figure 6 [Annette, 2015], which is inspired by the adjustment ofbicycle seats. As shown inFigure5 in theAppendix, theattachmentmechanismcanbefoldedatthebottomoftheumbrellawhennotused.Whenit’srainy, theuserjustneedsto unfold themechanism, and attach the umbrella to thewheelchair handle by ‘Quickreleasemechanism’.

5.2Anthropometrics
The need to understand anthropometrics crosses many technology interfaces(Wheelchair Measurements, 2016). Anthropometrics refers to human measurementsbeing taken into consideration when designing a system. Our system in this problemconsistsof2humanbeings.Firstpersonbeingthesubjectonthewheelchairandsecondone is theassistant.Theheightof theumbrella isdesignedsuchthat itcan fitahumansubject that is 2.25552m tall (Height of wheel chair+ height of umbrella =0.76+1.5m=2.26m) [Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2016]. According to AustralianBureau of Statistics 220 people out of 7296 had a height greater than 190cms(approximately0.0301),thiscoversover99.969%spectrumofhumanheightrange.Thewidth of the umbrella is 1.33m at thewidest point [WheelchairMeasurements, 2016].Thiswaschosenby taking intoconsideration theaveragewidthofawheelchair that is0.76m.
