INTRODUCTION
Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority health care needs of the population; thus should be easily available in adequate quantities and in suitable dosage forms. The Essential Medicine List [EML] is a tool that can help manage the purchasing and distribution of medicines and the selection of quality assured and cost-effective products and thus one of the vital tools needed to improve and maintain health. The NEDL was formulated after consultation with all the stakeholders in the health care industry and based on the Ministry of Health’s (MOH) Drugs List, which serves as the essential drugs list for the Ministry of Health since 1983 [1].
The NEDL price list currently consists of 288 NEDL items from 28 different types of pharmacological grouping and 299 items of different packaging and volume. The list was extracted from the Private Sector Medicine Wholesale Price Survey 2011 publication. The prices were reported in minimum, median and maximum price. From 288 NEDL items, only 173 items have Recommended Retail Price (60.01%). The list can be used as reference or tools for price negotiation in the public and private sector procurement process.
