•An effective, high performance and easy to build, two way loudspeaker system for high performance in a relatively compact and portable enclosure.
•An “already optimized” passive crossover network greatly simplifies the system setup.
•The 15W700 woofer has been combined with the ND1460 Neodymium Compression Driver, mounted on a XT1464 horn in order to obtain a smooth frequency response, precision directivity control and high power handling.
•Unique 18 Sound Elliptical-Spheroidal waveguide technology assures constant coverage at mid and high frequency with precision and stability, and good array-ability if used in multiple units.
•A crossover frequency set in the 1.5kHz range, yields very good power handling and operation reliability while not sacrificing directivity control and mid-range sound quality.
•The 15ND830 woofer is the perfect option if equivalent sonic performaces are required while greatly reducing system weight as well.

•The enclosure should be made out of Baltic birch plywood (15mm thick).
•The vents can be made with standard PVC plumbing pipe connections with internal diameter of 96mm, as described at page 13.
•All the used bolts should be the M5 type (5mm diameter), 35mm deep. “8.8” steel type or better is strongly suggested.
•M5 T-Nuts are recommended to be used in conjunction with M5 bolts.
•It’s strictly necessary to provide for proper cabinet internal acoustical damping with absorptive material.
•High density damping material, such as Dacron or other synthetic fibers, is required for best performance.
•The following example image show the proper damping material disposition.

Basreflex 15"
Inleiding:
De inhoud van de kast is 80 liter. De baspoorten zijn afgestemd op 45Hz. De weergave is strak door een combinatie van een kleine behuizing en een luidspreker met een redelijk lage Qts. Door zijn geringe afmetingen is
de kast makkelijk te vervoeren. De kast is zo ontworpen dat de weergave strak midlaag tot laag is, zodat deze beter te combineren is met deze 8"/1" topkast.
Luidsprekers:
De behuizing is speciaal ontwikkeld voor een B&C Speakers 15PZB40 luidspreker. Het is sterk aan te bevelen
om onder de afstemfrequentie van de poort een high pass filter te gebruiken. Dit voorkomt dat de 15" luidspreker onder de resonantiefrequentie van de poort te grote uitslagen gaat maken.
Constructie:
De figuren hieronder zijn getekend voor gebruik van 25mm dik hout. Wanneer gebruik wordt gemaakt van 15mm berken multiplex zijn extra verstevigingen noodzakelijk. Elke baspoort heeft een oppervlakte van 50cm˛ (vierkant
van 10x10cm gehalveerd) met een lengte van 33cm. Op de voorkant kan tegen de baspoorten een rooster gemonteerd worden.

Choice of timberWe recommend multi-layer 18mm Birch plywood as the best materialto withstand the rigours of intensive ‘life on the road’ or likelyexposure to damp conditions. Alternatively, 18mm Medium DensityFibreboard (MDF) offers good acoustic properties with the advantageof being less expensive ( although heavier ), and may be used wherethe cabinet will be permanently installed in a dry environment. Bothmaterials accept any type of paint finish extremely well.
Construction techniqueAll joints should be totally airtight, liberally glued with PVA adhesiveand screwed at 200mm (8”) centres with 4.2mm or 4.8mm (No.8 or No.10) x 50 mm (2”) self-tapping screws.The bracing panels are designed to ensure rigidity of construction,making the cabinet as free as possible from panel resonances causedby the internal forces generated by the loudspeaker drive unit andresulting in unwanted vibration and colouration of the sound. Again,these joints should be glued and screwed using the same method.
Porting The length of the ports as specified in the drawing should be strictlyadhered to. The cut-out size for the port is 100mm (4”). Plasticdrainpipe is ideal for this task, but as there could be slight variationsin pipe diameter we suggest the cut-out is made after purchasing.The port when fitted should be airtight, which can be achieved bysealing the joint with silicone sealant or polyurethane mastic.
Acoustic insulationTo aid panel damping and prevent internal reflections and standingwaves, all internal panels of the cabinet ( with the exception of thefront baffle ) should be lagged with acoustically absorptive material. We recommend the use of acoustic foam wadding, glassfibreinsulation or rubber carpet underlay which should be glued, stapledor tacked to the inside of the cabinet, taking care to ensure that porttubes are not obstructed.
Crossover networkBoth the Colossus 12MB and the Crescendo 12MB will give superbperformance when used with appropriately matched custom designedpassive crossover networks. The recommended Fane crossovernetwork for this design incorporates a substantial heatsink to protectthe HF unit from overload. All the crossover components should bemounted as far away as practical from the magnets. Major damage toboth the crossover and drive units could result should the boardbecome loose during transit, therefore the crossover should bemounted firmly to an inside wall of the cabinet, ideally secured usingself-tapping screws in screw cups to reduce the pressure exerted onthe circuit board, and spaced with rubber grommets between thecircuit board and cabinet wall. It must however be pointed out thatdue to the high power handling capabilities of these drive units, someusers may wish to employ an active crossover in order to utilise thefull potential of these drivers.
Internal wiringWiring should be kept away from moving loudspeaker parts andfastened to internal panelling to avoid buzzing. We encourage the useof colour coded wiring to identify polarity (red for +ve and blackfor -ve), and recommend carrying out a phase check before firstusing the cabinet. This is achieved by applying the positive terminalof a battery to the positive cabinet input which should result in thespeaker cone moving forwards if in phase (or by using a dedicatedpolarity checker).
Drive unit fixingThe drive unit should be front mounted to the baffle using T-nuts andfixing bolts, and is supplied with a length of self adhesive foamsealing strip which should be fitted around the front edge of thespeaker cut-outs to guarantee airtight conditions.
Loudspeaker protectionThe exposed front of all speaker drive units is of course vulnerable todamage, necessitating some means of protection which must berobust but acoustically transparent. Cloth/foam type grilles arefeasible for fixed cabinets, but a metal mesh grille is certainly thepreferred and superior option. It is recommended that a foam gasketmaterial is used between the wooden cabinet and the metal grille toprevent any unwanted resonances.
Cabinet hardwareHandles, terminal panels, protective corners, pole mountingaccessories etc. are readily available from many different sources. Fane Acoustics will be pleased to recommend approved suppliers ofall associated components.
Cabinet finishingCabinet finishing is largely a matter of personal preference and assuch, detail of this is omitted from the drawing. Generally cabinetsare either painted or covered in carpet or vinyl material. If a carpetmaterial is chosen it is recommended that a very dense tight piletype is used and that metal corner protectors are fitted. Cornerprotectors will have a defined radius that the edges of the cabinetshould be finished to. The cabinet shown on the first page of thisdocument has all the external edges routed with a 13mm radius andcoated in a hard wearing textured epoxy paint. A single top rearmounted carrying handle has been fitted. There are various types ofhandles and terminal panels available and again details of these havebeen omitted. It is recommended that these be purchased and cut-outs be made in an appropriate position in the panels before finalbuild. Be aware that handles and terminals are not necessarilyairtight, which will be detrimental to performance but can be easilyremedied using a silicone sealant or polyurethane mastic to seal all joints.

T he ‘Fane Constructor Series’ of documents is intended
to provide guidance in the construction of loudspeaker
cabinets specifically optimised for Fane components. Each
enclosure has been designed and rigorously tested to
ensure optimum performance from the recommended
components. The construction guide and panel cutting lists
provide sufficient information to enable any moderately
experienced woodworker to build their own enclosures.
Alternatively, Fane Acoustics will be pleased to
recommend approved cabinet manufacturers. Designs for
other enclosures and drive unit combinations are

Choice of timberWe recommend multi-layer 18mm Birch plywood as the best material towithstand the rigours of intensive ‘life on the road’ or likely exposure todamp conditions. Alternatively, 18mm Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)offers good acoustic properties with the advantage of being lessexpensive ( although heavier ), and may be used where the cabinet willbe permanently installed in a dry environment. Both materials accept anytype of paint finish extremely well.
Construction techniqueAll joints should be totally airtight, liberally glued with PVA adhesive andscrewed at 200mm (8”) centres with 4.2mm or 4.8mm (No.8 or No.10) x 50 mm (2”) self-tapping screws.The bracing panels are designed to ensure rigidity of construction,making the cabinet as free as possible from panel resonances caused bythe internal forces generated by the loudspeaker drive unit and resultingin unwanted vibration and colouration of the sound. Again, these jointsshould be glued and screwed using the same method.
Porting The length of the ports as specified in the drawing should be strictlyadhered to. The cut-out size for the port is 100mm (4”). Plasticdrainpipe is ideal for this task, but as there could be slight variations inpipe diameter we suggest the cut-out is made after purchasing. The portwhen fitted should be airtight, which can be achieved by sealing the jointwith silicone sealant or polyurethane mastic.
Acoustic insulationTo aid panel damping and prevent internal reflections and standingwaves, all internal panels of the cabinet ( with the exception of the frontbaffle ) should be lagged with acoustically absorptive material. We recommend the use of acoustic foam wadding, glassfibre insulationor rubber carpet underlay which should be glued, stapled or tacked tothe inside of the cabinet, taking care to ensure that port tubes are notobstructed.
Crossover networkBoth the Colossus 15B-600 and the Colossus 15B will give superbperformance when used with appropriately matched custom designedpassive crossover networks. The recommended Fane crossover network for this design incorporates a massive heatsink to protect the HF unit from overload. All the crossover components should bemounted as far away as practical from the magnets. Major damage toboth the crossover and drive units could result should the board becomeloose during transit, therefore the crossover should be mounted firmly toan inside wall of the cabinet, ideally secured using self-tapping screws inscrew cups to reduce the pressure exerted on the circuit board, andspaced with rubber grommets between the circuit board and cabinetwall. It must however be pointed out that due to the very high powerhandling capabilities of these drive units, some users may wish to employan active crossover in order to utilise the full potential of these drivers.
Internal wiringWiring should be kept away from moving loudspeaker parts and fastenedto internal panelling to avoid buzzing. We encourage the use of colourcoded wiring to identify polarity (red for +ve and black for -ve), andrecommend carrying out a phase check before first using the cabinet.This is achieved by applying the positive terminal of a battery to thepositive cabinet input which should result in the speaker cone movingforwards if in phase (or by using a dedicated polarity checker).
Drive unit fixingThe drive unit should be front mounted to the baffle using T-nuts andfixing bolts, and is supplied with a length of self adhesive foamsealing strip which should be fitted around the front edge of thespeaker cut-outs to guarantee airtight conditions.
Loudspeaker protectionThe exposed front of all speaker drive units is of course vulnerable todamage, necessitating some means of protection which must berobust but acoustically transparent. Cloth/foam type grilles arefeasible for fixed cabinets, but a metal mesh grille is certainly thepreferred and superior option. It is recommended that a foam gasketmaterial is used between the wooden cabinet and the metal grille toprevent any unwanted resonances.
Cabinet hardwareHandles, terminal panels, protective corners, pole mountingaccessories etc. are readily available from many different sources. Fane Acoustics will be pleased to recommend approved suppliers ofall associated components.
Cabinet finishingCabinet finishing is largely a matter of personal preference and assuch, detail of this is omitted from the drawing. Generally cabinetsare either painted or covered in carpet or vinyl material. If a carpetmaterial is chosen it is recommended that a very dense tight piletype is used and that metal corner protectors are fitted. Cornerprotectors will have a defined radius that the edges of the cabinetshould be finished to. The cabinet shown on the first page of thisdocument has all the external edges routed with a 13mm radius andcoated in a hard wearing textured epoxy paint. A single top rearmounted carrying handle has been fitted. There are various types ofhandles and terminal panels available and again details of these havebeen omitted. It is recommended that these be purchased and cut-outs be made in an appropriate position in the panels before finalbuild. Be aware that handles and terminals are not necessarilyairtight, which will be detrimental to performance but can be easilyremedied using a silicone sealant or polyurethane mastic to seal all joints.
Warning!There are safety regulations regarding the installation of loudspeakersystems. This document is intended as a guide to construct asuitable acoustic enclosure for our components. Fane Acoustics canhold no responsibility for the structural integrity of the finishedsystem. The system will be no stronger than the material it is madefrom and the joinery techniques used to assemble it. Suspending thefinished system will require additional hanging hardware. There arecompanies who specialise in the manufacture and correct use of thishardware. They are experts and must be consulted if overheadsuspension of the finished system is intended.
