Ellsworth to Become ANA’s 61st President

Voting members of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) have cho-sen five new candidates and four incumbents to the ANA Board of Governors for the 2019-21 election term. Col. Steven K. Ellsworth, Ret. was selected for the President’s role.

New members Muriel Eymery, Mary Lynn Garrett and Shanna Schmidt; return-ing members Michael Ellis and Clifford Mishler, will join current members Greg Lyon and Paul Montgomery on the Board of Governors, along with President-elect Col. Steven Ellsworth, Ret. and Vice President-elect Dr. Ralph Ross.

In the event that a board member can-not fulfill their term, the runner-up will fill the vacant seat for the remainder of the two-year term.

The new board will be sworn-in at the annual ANA Banquet on Friday, Aug. 16, at the World’s Fair of Money® in Rosemont, Ill. Ellsworth will become the Association’s 61st president, suc-ceeding current President Gary Adkins, who will serve as a non-voting, ex-offi-

cio member of the board.Donald Kagin and

Thomas Uram, having lost their bids for President and Vice President respectively, will be leaving the Board, as will John Highfill. Brian Hendelson did not seek re-election.

ANA members had the option to vote by either electronic or paper ballot. Out of 6,131 total votes, 4,283 were cast by paper

ballot while another 1,848 members voted electronically, representing over 30 percent of votes cast.

The election was conducted and tabu-lated by Election Services Corporation of Hauppauge, New York. Overall, 19,737 ANA members were eligible to vote in this election; 31.06 percent of eligible voters participated. To be eligible to vote, members have to be at least 13 years old and a member of the Association for at least one year as of March 31 of the elec-tion year. In 2017, 19,425 members were eligible to vote; a total of 5,371 votes were cast, representing 27.65 percent of eligible members.

Senate passes legislation seeking Christa McAuliffe silver dollar

Congress is moving forward in honor-ing Christa McAuliffe, the schoolteacher who, along with six fellow crewmem-bers, was killed when the space shuttle Challenger exploded in January 1986, with a commemorative silver dollar.

S. 239, the Christa McAuliffe Commemorative Coin Act of 2019, was passed by voice vote of the full Senate on July 9.

The bill directs the Department of the Treasury to mint and issue a maximum mintage of 350,000 silver dollars honor-ing McAuliffe, who would have become the first teacher in space had the mission been successful.

All surcharges received by the Treasury from the sale of the coins shall be “paid by the Secretary to the FIRST robotics program for the purpose of engaging and inspiring young people, through mentor-based programs, to become leaders in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.”

The bill will be moving on to the House of Representatives for approval next. Given that there is also a House ver-sion of the bill, which currently has 305 co-sponsors it’s looking positive this com-memorative will be moving forward.

COIN CLINIC BY RICHARD GIEDROYC

How rare are the 1981 SBA dollars?

E-mail inquiries only. Do not send letters in the mail. Send to [email protected]. Because of space limita-tions, we are unable to publish all questions.

■ What is the weight of the thick copper Russian ruble of 1771 that you mentioned some time ago in this column?

The 1771-dated Sestroretsk novedel rouble, struck in 1845, weighs more than 4 pounds. It is 77.6 mm in diameter, 26 mm thick and round, in contrast to the rectangular plates used by Sweden.

■ The Isle of Man uses the Triskeles as its symbol. Is this the first such use?

The Triskeles or Triskelion, consisting of three legs, arms or branches, is called by several different names. The Isle of Man is a latecomer in the history of this symbol as the first use was by the Greek city of Phlius in the sixth century B.C.E. Later it was used in Sicily where it was called the Triquetra.

■ About the “rare” 1981 SBA dollars: just how rare are they?

It’s a bit difficult to associate the term “rare” with a coin that had a mintage of more than 3 million at each of three mints. The proof mintage is more than 4 million, so any way you look at it the coin is not rare,

even if it may be hard to find.

■ Is it possible to get a listing of the rarity scales used by some of the old-time researchers? I want to use them to determine the value of my coins.

There is no direct relationship between rarity scales and current market values, so there is no way to use them to determine the exact value of a coin. Some of the older references attempted to establish values based on the scale used, but they are outmoded by discoveries of hoards of coins that in many cases have altered the rarity factor. Many new varieties have been discovered since the rarity scales were established, so you would be better off to use the Coin Market published in Numismatic News to determine general values and then consult with some of the specialty groups for information on the numerous die varieties that aren’t listed in the regular price guides.

■ I have a 1918-SM quarter. Why the “SM” mintmark?

You are confusing two different, and

separate, parts of the design. The ‘S’ is the San Francisco mintmark. The ‘M’ that appears on Standing Liberty quarters is designer Hermon A. MacNeil’s initial.

■ Why don’t they go back to large mintmarks like the ones on the war nickels so a collector doesn’t need a microscope to see where a coin came from?

A good thought, but one that is not likely to get much support from the Mint. Although they have been inconsistent over the years, varying mintmark sizes seemingly on a whim, the present policy is to tolerate the mintmark as a means of identifying or tracing a coin to its origin. It has been only under extreme pressure from collectors that they have retained the tiny letters in use. The monsters used on the 1942-1945 nickels were among the largest mintmarks in the history of world coinage.

ANNOUNCEMINTS

What I find most interesting are the San Francisco Mint Reserves, particularly the gold coins like that Double Eagle 1857-S with 970,000 minted. I’m also curious about how many nice pieces will be returned to the collector market and how it will affect prices. Not that I can afford one mind you.

Wesley EllisPortland, Ore.

It is a truly remarkable thing that these once lost and now found items were recovered to be appreciated and maintained for future numismatists around our world. A huge amount of praise and remembrance should be given to the courageous souls who ascended into the depths where the great ship had sunk and recovered what they were able to get for future generations.

The United States Mint’s communications department shared some photos this week from the Pride of Two Nations launch event held on July 3. Mint Director David Ryder welcomed Royal Canadian Mint CEO, Marie Lamay, to the Mint’s Philadelphia facility to launch the 2019 Pride of Two Nations Limited Edition Two-Coin Set™.

The set commemorates the nationhood of both countries with coins that capture their rich history, pride, and their close rela-tionship as neighbors and friends. This unique product is a joint coin set between the two Mints.

“Not only do the United States and Canada share a border, but we also share history and many cultural values that have resulted in an enduring relationship,” Ryder said. “This coin set is a fitting tribute to our abiding friendship, strong alliance, and commitment to cooperation.”

Mintage of this historic set has been set at 110,000 units. Orders will be limited to five units per household for the first 48 hours of sales, after which the Mint will remove the limit. As of July 9, the Mint reported initial sales of 95,294. (U.S. Mint photos by Sharon McPike)

A “Boring” Revelation in West Virginia

This Series of 1929 $10 note issued by the First National Bank of St. Albans is from the author’s collection. All notes from this town are scarce, with large notes virtually unknown.

Left: First National Bank of St. Albans, W.Va., as it appeared in a circa 1925 postcard view. Right: building as it appears today.

Mark Hotz

A couple of interesting small towns south and west of Charleston, West Virginia caught my attention for this month. A note intrigued me in my col-lection from the Oil Field National Bank of Griffithsville, W.Va. I had no idea that West Virginia had been an oil producer, and decided that would be a worthwhile basis for one of these articles. So let’s journey to the Mountaineer State and check out not only Griffithsville, but also nearby St. Albans.

We will start with St. Albans, a city of 12,000 located in Kanawha County, W.Va, at the confluence of the Kanawha and Coal Rivers. It is easily reached via Interstate 64 and US Route 60, west of Charleston, the state capital. I learned that St. Albans was not really involved with West Virginia’s short-lived oil boom, but it was on the way to Griffithsville.

Fort Tackett once stood near St. Albans. Ft. Tackett was built in 1786 on land that originally belonged to George Washington and was deeded to him for his service in the French and Indian War. It was named for the first white child born in the Kanawha Valley.

The James River & Kanawha Turnpike passed through St. Albans, so many inns were established. A covered bridge once crossed the Coal River, but was burnt during the Confederate retreat following the Battle of Scary Creek in 1861. Eleven locks and dams were con-structed on the Coal River in 1855 and continued until after the Civil War.

St. Albans has also gone by the

names of Ft. Tackett, Coalsmouth, Phillipi, Village of Jefferson and the Village of Kanawha City. It was incor-porated in 1872 and was named St. Albans by the chief counsel of the C&O railroad, H. C. Parsons, in honor of his hometown in Vermont. The town became prosperous in the early 1900’s due to the numerous sawmills in the town and the shipping of coal on the railroads. With that prosperity came the founding of the town’s only nation-al bank.

The First National Bank of St. Albans, W.Va., was organized at the very end of 1909 and received charter #9640. It operated for 23 years until the receiver closed it in December of 1933 for mismanagement. During its two decades of operations, it was never a large bank, and had a total issue of $337,000. It left $19,000 outstanding at close, with just $250 of that number in

large size notes.Notes from this bank are just plain

hard to find. Just a single large note is known, with two uncut sheets and five individual small notes reported. The uncut sheets are the Type 2 Serial No. 1 sheets of the $10 and $20 denomina-tions. These have never been cut and are unlikely to be cut, leaving a mere five small notes available to collectors. These are rarely available. I was fortu-nate enough to purchase a small size $10 note on this bank at the FUN Show about 10 years back, as I have seen few others for sale.

The old First National Bank building still stands in St. Albans today. I have included a 1925 postcard view of the building, then housing both the bank and the U.S. post office, along with a view of the building as it appears today. Little has changed and it is still quite impressive.

This postcard view circa 1915 shows oil-drilling equipment being hauled through the streets of Griffithsville, W.Va. Little is left of the town today, and none of the houses shown in the photo still stand.

This is the “heart” of Griffithsville, W.Va., today - a small modern post office and the boarded up abandoned Oil Field National Bank building.

Virginia is an interesting one. It actu-ally began as an outgrowth of the salt industry. In the early 1800s, oil and gas had no importance, and though salt makers frequently hit oil or gas in their drilling, they considered it a nuisance. In fact, salt manufacturers diverted so much oil to the Kanawha River that it was long known as “Old Greasy” to the boatmen. Gas was first struck in a well

drilled for salt at Charleston in 1815. Once the value of oil and gas was real-ized, the Great Kanawha Valley region became a pioneer in the discovery of petroleum by boring and in the use of oil and gas on a commercial scale.

On the Little Kanawha River, near the Hughes River, was a stream called Burning Springs Run, named because there were two springs at its mouth from

which natural gas escaped. As early as 1781, Thomas Jefferson described the bril-liant flame, which could be produced by thrusting a lighted candle into the escap-ing gas at this site. Because gas and salt brine were often associated, the Rathbone brothers bored a salt well near these springs. However at a depth of 200 feet they hit petroleum. Although petro-leum was not the treasure that the Rathbones sought, they were encouraged by their find and drilled a second well, which yielded 1,200 barrels of petroleum daily in 1859. News of the Rathbone broth-ers’ discovery spread rap-idly and created tremendous excitement. By 1861, a town with several thousand inhab-itants had sprung up. All of

the light in the newly formed town, including that for a brilliantly lit hotel, was provided by natural gas. The wide-spread use of gas in this town marked the beginning of the era of gas devel-opment in West Virginia. Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of barrels of oil were being floated down the river to Parkersburg where they were then sent to other cities by rail or river. The Burning Springs oil field was one of only two oil fields in America prior to

the Civil War. But by 1876, there were 292 wells in the state, producing a total of 900 barrels daily.

The Volcano oil field was discovered in 1860, and the heavy lubricants produced led to the development of West Virginia’s first oil pipeline, from Volcano to Parkersburg, in 1879. Also at Volcano, in 1874, W. C. Stiles, Jr., invent-ed the “endless wire” method of pumping many wells from a central engine. Using wheels, belts, and cables, perhaps as many as 40 wells could be pumped by one engine. In 1889, large iron pipes were inserted to prevent clogging of the wells by crumbling walls, and with this discovery much deeper wells could be drilled. With the discovery of deeper oil sands, the Doll’s

This attractive large size Series of 1902 $20 from the Oil Field National Bank of Griffithsville, W.Va. , hails from the author’s collection. Just a handful of banks

nationwide have reference to oil in their titles.

Here is a Series of 1929 $10 note from the Oil Field National Bank. It isn’t very pretty, but few small notes are known from this bank. (Photo courtesy Heritage Auctions.)

Run, Eureka, Mannington, and Sistersville fields were found and developed.

Thus, from its early begin-nings at Burning Springs in 1859, the oil industry in West Virginia grew to reach its peak production of 16 million barrels in 1900. Although the oil indus-try then started a decline, natu-ral gas production was grow-ing. From 1906 to 1917 West Virginia was the leader in gas production in the United States.

Griffithsville, W.Va. was located at the southern end of the oil fields, in Lincoln County, about 17 miles as the crow flies south of St. Albans, and about 9 miles east of the county seat, Hamlin. During the period from 1905-1925, Griff ithsville was a small boomtown, with continuous oil drilling and the increased population associated with it. This prosperity led to the founding of a national bank.

The Oil Field National Bank of Griffithsville, W.Va., received charter #10097 in October of 1911. It was one of just three national banks nationwide to have an oil related title. (The others are the Oil Belt National Bank of Oblong, Ill., and the Oilfields National Bank of Brea, Calif.) The bank issued $444,000 in large and small size notes, of which eight large and 10 small are currently known.

I wish I could relate to you all sorts of interesting information about Griffithsville, but sadly, not only is there virtually nothing available about its history (other than it was first settled in 1854 and named for an early set-tler, Alexander Griffith,) but also there is virtually nothing left of the town. Griffithsville was clearly boom and bust, framed by the rise and fall of local oil production. A vintage postcard view, accompanying this article, shows oil pipes and drilling equipment being hauled through town, circa 1920. Not a single building or house shown in that postcard view remains today.

Griffithsville, or what is left of it, is located on State Route 3 as it winds

its way north towards Hamlin, the seat of Lincoln County. This is an incred-ibly sparsely populated subdivision with just 22,000 residing in the entire county. As the oilfields dried up and closed down, Griffithsville just melted away. It is just a speck on a map today; Lincoln County has used some of the more than available land just south of the “town” to build the Lincoln County Middle School.

Griffithsville itself is nothing more than two buildings: the modern corru-gated-tin roofed post office, and the abandoned Oil Field National Bank building, the only masonry building ever erected in this town. It stands gaunt and boarded up next to the post office. There are no other commercial buildings of any kind, nor even a cluster of homes that would resemble a town, though there are residences scattered throughout the area.

I have included a photo that shows all that is currently left of Griffithsville. The bank building still proudly boasts the name OIL FIELD NATIONAL BANK engraved on the façade. If it weren’t for this, no visitor would ever know that oil was once king in the area.

As you know, an abandoned national bank in a non-existent town is what excites me about national currency. I was delighted to add a large note from this bank to my collection, and even more thrilled to see the derelict vacant building from which it emanated.

I hope your summer will be one of relaxation and serenity, and that you can fill some winsome hours studying your own national bank notes and their history.

Readers may address questions or comments about this article or national banknotes in general to Mark Hotz direct-ly by email at [email protected].

Pride of Two Nations Charges AheadReleased on July 3, the Pride of Two

Nations 2019 Limited Edition Two-Coin Set has come and gone. The product limit was listed at 100,000 and this week’s sales report from the Mint shows 95,308 sold. Checking the product page today, the product has been listed as currently unavailable. At $139.95, that’s a pretty big chunk of change for just a few days in the shop.

Bullion on the other hand, is not charg-ing ahead. Last year the gold Eagles took

off the first week of the month with 6,500 one-ounce coins taken by the Authorized Purchaser network, however this year no sales have been r eported for the first week of July for the one-ounce coin. Half, quarter and tenth ounce, however are all reporting more sales than was reported for the full month of June.

No “giant leaps” for the Apollo 11 coin offerings. Collectors bought 1,763 proof silver dollars this week and 268 of the uncirculated silver dollar. The clad

half dollar proofs increased by just 190, while the uncirculated clad half dollar sold 321.

Other items of note include the 2019-W proof silver Eagle recording total sales of 288,107, 2019 clad proof set climbing to 363,043 and 2019 silver proof set adding another 3,098 and reaching 271,198 overall.

The rest of the Mint’s offerings show little movement at all, so really not much to spend any time perusing.

When the Apollo 11 Lunar Module landed on the Moon on July 20, 1969, three facilities located in Gladstone, Calif., Camberra, Australia and Robledo de Chavela (Madrid, Spain) guaranteed the monitoring of the inter-planetary spacecraft 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, covering 120 degrees each of the airspace of the Earth.

To commemorate man’s arrival to the moon and the contribution of the Spanish facility to this event, the Royal Spanish Mint is releasing on July 1 a special 8 reales .925 silver coin.

The reverse of the coin depicts one monitoring antenna based in Spain, the Lunar Module, and as a background, the Moon. The obverse depicts a portrait of His Majesty King Don Felipe VI.

The Royal Spanish Mint reached an agreement with the US Mint to develop a joint product of two coins in the same package. One coin will be the 8 reales coin from Royal Spanish Mint and the other one will be the curved half-dollar clad coin. The maximum mintage of the set of two coins will be 5,000 units. The Spanish 8 reales coin will also have a mintage of an additional 5,000 sold in a single case.

For more information visit https://tienda.fnmt.es/fnmttv.

The U.S. half dollar coin in the lower left depicts the iconic first step on the Moon’s surface with the inscription MERCURY GEMINI APOLLO. The Spanish coin in the upper right celebrates the contribution of the Spanish facilities to the historic Moon landing.

Both coins come packaged together in an attractive box

with certificate of authenticity.

An incredible Gold Certificate rarity, a “Triple Signature” 1882 Gold Certificate is one of just three pieces extant and the only such note remaining in private hands. The face of this note has the portrait of Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton (nicknamed “Old Bullion”) to the left and the denomination in two conjoined rosettes at right. Gold overprints include “GOLD” at the top center and backgrounds to the serial numbers. The back is printed in a rich orange-gold and has an eagle at the center. After Dec. 17, 1878, gold coins and paper currency were exchangeable at par in general commerce. Accordingly, these are the first of the Gold Certificates that saw wide use. The engraved signatures of Treasury officials Bruce and Gilfillan are stacked in the lower right corner. To their left is the large engraved signa-ture of Thomas Acton, Assistant U.S. Treasurer at New York. In fact, these notes were payable at the office of the Assistant U.S. Treasurer there.

A large brown scalloped Treasury Seal is at bottom center, while the serial numbers, also in brown, are at the bottom left and top right. This riveting Gold Certificate exhibits just the lightest signs of circulation while displaying vividly printed inks and bright well-margined paper. The orange-gold back is brilliantly colored and free from fading. The grading service makes men-tion of “Minor Edge Restorations” on the holder but those are minor in scope, skillfully executed and very difficult to detect. The note has long been recorded in census records as Choice About Uncirculated and while the eye appeal certainly suggests that, fold count requires a technical grade a bit lower. That said this is the only example of the catalog number available to the collecting community. The other two notes known reside in the collections of the Federal Reserve Banks of New York and San Francisco. This is another exceptional rarity that can trace its

pedigree back to the legendary collection of Albert A. Grinnell. It last traded publicly for $822,500 in a January 2014 auction. It is no less rare now than it was then. However demand for ultra-rarities such as this has only increased.

The 1882 $100 Gold Certificate will be presented in the Stack’s Bowers Galleries Official Auction at the ANA World’s Fair of Money, Friday, August 16, 2019 at the Donald E. Record prices fell at Legend Rare Coin Auctions’ June 2019 Regency Auction as multiple advanced Registry Set collectors fought it out to add the finest known issues to their top ranking sets on the PCGS Registry. Besides the Finest Known coins, the action was as hot as the sum-mer sun in the Las Vegas desert (it was a balmy 101 outside). Again, the explosive bidding activity proved that collectors of all areas were out in force to buy quality coins.

As usual, PCGS/CAC coins garnered the most attention and most active bidding, realizing solid to extremely strong prices. The Regency Auction 33, which is the official auc-tion of the PCGS Members Show, proves that even smaller sales get the same draw and attention of the larger conventions. While attendance was not strong at the show, pre-internet and live-during-the-sale internet bidding was the most active of ANY auction we have ever had. The top selling lots were a pair of Top Pop Mercury Dimes, which three very advanced col-lectors drove to shocking world record prices: lot 211, a 1931-S in PCGS MS67+ FB CAC realiz-ing $270,250 and lot 220, a monster toned 1938-S PCGS MS68+ FB CAC sold for $364,250. All prices real-ized include the 17.5 percent Buyer’s Premium.

“Opening the sale was the Hunter Collection,” said Julie Abrams, president of LegendRare Coin Auctions. “For the first hour and a half of the sale, it was standing room only with a huge crowd in the auction room. Collectors fought it out over and over, driving prices higher to take home th e great-est prizes. The current market is as quality conscientious as ever, and Premium Quality coins (especially toners) are bringing premium bids!”

“Bidders on the phone, in the room, and online fought fero-ciously to bring home the prizes for their collections,” said Laura Sperber, founder of LRCA. “Julie, Jessica, and I were on the phone with bidders who really desired the absolute best coins.

Clearly, Legend Rare Coin Auctions has built a clientele of the strongest buyers, especially for the finest PCGS/CAC coins in the world and monster toned examples. We consistently

sell top pop toners for world record prices that no other auction firm can

touch! However, not everything had to be a pop 1 wildly toned piece to attract loads of bid-der and realize strong prices. Even PCGS NO CAC coins performed especially well ($20 1904 PCGS MS67 real-

ized $73,437). A small group of exceptional Proof Barber dimes

and quarters performed exception-ally well. Another area that performed strongly: Morgan Dollars. Legend is a rising star among auction companies when it comes to selling the best qual-ity Morgans.” “Auction after auction, our boutique

auction program gets the biggest buyers’ attention and they return,

every auction, knowing that we sell the very best coins on the market,” Julie Abrams stated. “That is why the consignors keep coming back. We offer much more than just auctioning

your coins. If you have not yet consigned to our record-breaking

sales, now is the time to do so. We are now accepting consignments for our September Regency Auction, so contact one of our consignment specialists today. Take a look at these highlights (to name just a few) and let us do the same for you!”

By Richard Giedroyc

The gap between buying and selling coins of intrinsic value continues to nar-row as gold bullion firms up its new trading range at about $1,400 an ounce. The gap between the buy and sell on silver bullion coins remains wider, but is also narrowing. Morgan silver dollar retail prices for better grade, but less than rare dates, continue to slowly decline. It appears there are a surprising number of Bust silver dollars currently available, with interest in this area likewise underperform-ing. Indian cents, always a popular area,

have lost some of their luster except for the exceptional examples that are primarily appearing in auctions. Sales of gold coins, regardless of their age or scarcity, remain anemic. Collectors continue to ignore the low mintage and challenging availability of Platinum American Eagles, now adding First Spouse gold coins to the list of scarce coins that are under-collected. On the flip side of the coin, there is surprising strength in the better grade Walking Liberty and Franklin half-dollars. Coin prices remain strong at auctions. The trend of offering coins from long time collections through auctions rather than through dealers con-

tinues. Mint sales of commemorative and collector coins remain strong, but as always the secondary market for Proof and Mint sets can be disappointing for most issues, excepting the modern silver issues. Anyone who has been collecting in recent years could likely realize a profit if they sold today, but it remains a collector mar-ket with a long way yet to grow.

Commemorative and Collector Coins Remain Strong

Since I have seen so much German notgeld denominated in Hellers, I never cared to go in that direction. One nice aspect of a

collection of Hellers is that they tended to the be lowest cir-

culating denomination, almost all struck in

bronze or copper, where it is pos-

sible to get coins from the early 1700s some-times for less than $5.

A collection that is more pop-ular over time is

assembling the worst quality set,

especially coins that have been certified in

the lowest possible con-dition.

Imagine trying to assemble a collection of coins with your

name on it. It would be a quite extensive collection if your name was Elizabeth. But there are many monarchs’ names like George, Edward, William, and so forth that could be challeng-ing. There are several currency collectors that enjoy searching for obsolete notes or national currency that have their first or last names in the title.

I have also, like many other collectors, assembled collec-tions of currency and exonumia from cities of interest to me. A long time ago, one of my company’s employees had to purchase a Michigan obsolete note because one of the names in the issu-ing company was a direct ancestor.

Here are some “outside the box” collections to consider: World coins issued in your birth year An example of coins of as many different languages as you can find

Coins or paper money with all different monetary units (dollar, peso, franc, drachma, dinar, ducat, penny . . .)

Coins or paper money that feature a word such as “freedom” (one formed around issues with the word

‘liberty” would probably be too easy) Coins or paper money depicting religious figures of your faith

Coins or paper money of as many different monetary units as possible (one obsolete bank in Michigan issued notes in the denomination of $1.25, $1.50, and $1.75)

One coin of each numeral from one through twelve to use to make a clock, or just a specimen from as many different numerals as possible

Paper money of extremely high denominations such as the Zimbabwe $100 Trillion note

Coins and currency depicting monarchs who were declared saints

While there are a number of collectors who special-ize in a specific kind of animal such as dogs, horses, or elephants, how about assembling a collection with one for the first initial of each letter of the alphabet (albatross, bison, cougar, donkey . . . zebra)

A type set of coins that not only includes a representative piece of each type, but also an example from each mint that struck each type, though this could be expensive

At least one specimen from each country that existed at one time, but not today

As many different coins as you can find with the denomination of “2”

Coins from as many different nations as possible that depict a queen

Coins and paper money that depict the same per-son on both the obverse and reverse like a Lincoln Memorial Cent, Series 1976 and later US $2.00 Federal Reserve Note, or a Roman Emperor Nero Gold Solidus

Issues of a particular coin or currency designer, or perhaps a designer of medals

As issue from each geographic area where Roman Emperor Hadrian issued his travel series of the silver denarius

The final coin or currency issues of a country before it collapsed

Paper money of one particular ink color Topical issues such as ships, palm trees, butterflies, maps, food, space, and so forth

National bank notes of banks that were robbed by John Dillinger

A coin from as many different shapes or metal com-positions as possible

Coins of the Great Lakes region or any other regional area

Instead of a type set or a first year of issue type set, how about a last year of issue type set

Coins of the “Greats” of history such as Alexander the Great, Darius the Great, Justinian the Great, Catherine the Great, Peter the Great

Use your imagination in coming up with a theme to collect for fun. By stepping beyond the bounds of your current col-lections, you open yourself to meeting new people and having more adventures.

Oh, and a follow-up for last week’s column (find it online if you missed it). The other three people specifically depicted on US paper money who were not born in what is now the United States of America are: Sir Walter Raleigh, born in Hayes Barton, England who is on the reverse of the $2.00 National Bank Notes from the First Charter Period, Hernando de Soto, born in Jerez de los Caballeros, Badajoz, Extremadura, Castille (now part of Spain), who is on the reverse of the $10.00 National Bank Notes from the First Charter Period, and General John Burgoyne, born in Sutton, England, who is on the reverse of the $500.00 National Bank Notes from the First Charter Period.

NGC and eBay Partner on Expert Review ServiceSARASOTA, Fla. (July 9, 2019) – Numismatic Guaranty

Corporation® (NGC®) and eBay have partnered to launch NGC Expert Review, a low-cost service that provides a preliminary review of coins by NGC experts. The service is available for coins on eBay that have not been certified by a third-party grad-ing service.

NGC is the world’s largest third-party authentication and grad-ing service for collectible coins, tokens and medals. It is an approved grading company of eBay, a leading online market-place that connects buy-ers and sellers around the world.

NGC Expert Review offers two services for US, world and ancient coins on eBay:

• Authenticity Review ($5 per coin): An NGC expert examines the pho-tos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the coin’s authen-ticity. The preliminary opin-ions of authenticity are:

Likely Genuine, Likely Not Genuine or Inconclusive.

• Authenticity and Grade Review ($10 per coin): An NGC expert examines the photos from the eBay listing and provides a preliminary opinion of the coin’s authenticity and, if it is Likely Genuine, a preliminary opinion on its grade range. For US and world coins, the preliminary opinions of grade range include Likely Low Circulated (1-35), Likely High Circulated (40-58), Likely Uncirculated (60-70), Likely Proof (60-70) or Inconclusive. Similar opinions are given for ancient coins.

NGC will provide the results within two business days. An authenticity opinion of Inconclusive will result in a full refund. A grade of Inconclusive will result in a $5 refund.

To use this service, eBay buyers should look for the NGC Expert Review link near the bid or buy section on the eBay list-ing page for an uncertified coin.

As an added benefit, NGC will give the person who pur-chased the NGC Expert Review service a voucher toward NGC’s full authentication, grading and encapsulation services. The voucher is equal to the amount paid for the review and is valid

for 90 days from the date the NGC Expert Review service was purchased. An Associate or higher NGC Collector membership is required to submit collect-ibles to NGC for its regular grading services.

“We want every eBay buyer to have confi-dence that the coin they are purchasing is exactly what they believe it to be, and we are able to reinforce that peace of mind in partnership with NGC,” said Mark Flaa, Category Director of Arts & Collectibles at eBay. “This new service is

another step in eBay’s efforts to ensure the integrity of the items we offer. Our trusted marketplace and wide selection of inventory, coupled with NGC’s expertise, makes eBay the ideal destination for those searching for authentic, rare collectibles.”

“We are honored to work with eBay to help make it safer, easier and more educational to buy coins in its marketplace,” said Mark Salzberg, Chairman of NGC. “This is a great example of how NGC has leveraged technology to launch a new service that benefits the hobby.”

The events, held in conjunc-tion with ANA conventions, is intended to honor individuals who have profoundly influenced the hobby and to give listeners some insight into their lives, personali-ties and achievements.

Successful Coin Grading and Conservation Seminar in Poland

On Saturday May 25, 2019 for the first time in Poland and only the sec-ond time in Europe, a coin grading class based on NGC grading standards was held. The seminar was jointly hosted by the Michigan based PANS and PTN. The nine stu-dents now are the core of modern coin grading, conservation and storage knowledge in Poland and they will be sharing what they learned in their local organizations. The lead instructor was ANA past president Bob Campbell from Salt Lake City, Utah who was named an NGC Numismatic Ambassador in honor of the occasion. Supporting Bob as assistant instructors were PANS president, Lester Rosik, that also acted as the Polish translator, CSNS vice president and PANS treasurer, Brett Irick, and PANS past Secretary Joe Beaupied. The students included PTN president Przemysław Ziemba and PTN Treasurer Szymon Bereska.

According to PANS president Les Rosik, “the seminar idea came from a 2016 discussion with Szymon Bereska about mod-ern coin grading standards on the 1-70 Sheldon scale that was held in the back room of a Warsaw coin dealer during a ten-day numismatic tour of Poland.”

In Poland, the traditional 1-5 grading scale is still used that has large steps between grades that can make coins hard to value or compare without viewing in person. PANS and PTN worked

together to organize the event.

PANS founding member, Les Rosik, also noted that when the PANS society was formed in 1981 “we wrote into our constitu-tion that we would sup-port the development of Numismatics in Poland.”

And, that “nearly forty years of hard work were required to develop our 100+ table semi-annual international and regional coin shows in Troy, Michigan, USA. And, that these shows generated the money that made this and future events with the PTN possible.”

Thanks go out to the sponsors of this event. In the United States, the Polish American Numismatic Society, NGC Numismatic Ambassador, All About Coins dealer and owner Bob Campbell and the Numismatic Guarantee Corporation presi-dent Mark Salzberg. And in Poland, the Polskie Towarzystwo Numizmatyczne, PTN president Przemysław Ziemba and PTN treasurer Szymon Bereska.

In addition, Gabinet Numizmatyczny owned by Damian Marciniak is also thanked for inviting the instructors and their guests to an outstanding dinner buffet in downtown Warsaw after the seminar that was held in conjunction with a numismatic auction. And, finally, the auctioneer Antykwariat Numizmatczny owned by Michał Niemczyk located in Warsaw, Poland.
