LAST weekend, 10 junior teams were crowned champions for 2016 after winning their respective Grand Final matches.
It was a fantastic day at both Junior Finals venues, with large crowds supporting all teams.
While it was great to see so many happy and ecstatic faces
when the final siren sounded, it is also important to note that all teams can’t win the premiership.
There were plenty of tears after games and people looking back at what could have been, but instead of Grand Final day being about who wins or loses, it should be a celebration of footy.
All juniors should be proud of their achievements this season and should hold their heads high.
Tarneit’s Under-12 coach Leigh Gallop said it best when he said his team were already winners in his eyes, regardless of whether or not they win or lose on Sunday.
The story of Tarneit’s Under-12 team is an inspiring one.
The team was one of the club’s foundation teams back in 2014 and over the past couple of years have battle their way through each season.
After winning just three games last year the team now finds themselves playing in the Under-12C Grand Final on Sunday.
The Titans finished fifth on the ladder and have overcome teams in the first three weeks of finals to get to this position.
It is a story that I am confident will motivate and encourage not only junior teams but seniors teams to never give up.
I wish them and all of the other junior teams playing in Grand Finals the very best of luck.
In senior news, this weekend marks the last home and away game for Divisions 1, 2 and 3.
Eighteen rounds have come and gone with the 2016 Finals Series kicking off across the west next weekend.
The Division 1 Grand Final will be played on September 11 at Whitten Oval, the Division 2 final will be at Avalon Airport Oval in Werribee on September 4 and the Division 3 Grand Final is on September 3 at Wootten Road Reserve.
It is shaping up to be a cracking four week series. I hope to see many of you out and about supporting #TheBestOfTheWest
Finally, if you take any photos from Week 4 of Junior Finals and would like it to be featured online or in the next edition of the Footy Record, please email it to [email protected]
The WRFL Footy Show will also be continuing over the junior and senior finals series. I will be out and about interviewing players, coaches and volunteers who are a part of the finals series.
Make sure to check out the WRFL website or the WRFL’s Facebook page to stay up-to-date with all the latest news.
See you at the footy.

TARNEIT’S HISTORY MAKING UNDER-12 TEAMBy KRISTEN ALEBAKISREGARDLESS of Sunday’s Grand Final result, Tarneit’s Under-12C side are already winners, according to coach Leigh Gallop. Gallop’s side is the first team in Tarneit’s three-year history to reach a Grand Final.
Most of the juniors playing in the Under-12C team were part of Tarneit’s foundation team in 2014.
After a difficult first two seasons, including winning just three games in 2015, the team now finds themselves preparing for a Grand Final showdown with the Flemington Juniors.
“In Round 1 we played Flemington and we knew they were a team expected to do well and they defeated us and we thought we could be in for another long year,” Gallop said.
“We lost two of our top players, one of our 10-year-old players tore his hamstring off the bone, so we had our backs to the wall.
“But credit to the players, they have worked extremely hard and now we are in a Grand Final.”
Tarneit finished the regular season in fifth position and have overcome Point Cook, West Footscray and St Bernard’s over the first three weeks of finals to earn a spot in the final game of the year.
The Bulldogs, Roosters and Bernard’s all defeated the Titans during the 2016 season.
Gallop said he was extremely proud of what his young side has been able to achieve.
“I have always said that on our best day we could give the top sides a run for their money,” he said.
“It is amazing at such a young age how much of a mental battle it is.
“What has changed over the past four weeks is that our players have mentally found the confidence to play against these teams.
“The feeling among the players, coaches and families after that first elimination final win against Point Cook was incredible.
“I don’t think there has been a dry eye in the house over the past three games.”
Gallop said he will tell his players what he has told them for the past three weeks, to do your best.
“They are winners in my eyes already, no matter what they result.”
Tarneit will take on the Flemington Juniors at Galvin Park on Sunday at 8.45am.
TWO of the WRFL’s junior rising stars were named in the School Sport Australia Under-15 All-Australian team after impressing at the national carnival last month.Altona Juniors star Emerson Jeka and St Bernard’s young gun Jeremy O’Sullivan were both picked in the All-Australian team after standout performances for Victoria during the week-long event. The dynamic duo have had some experience playing alongside each other, they both represented the WRFL at the Junior Metro Championships. Vic Metro claimed the school title, going through the carnival undefeated. Emerson was the standout forward in the competition, kicking 19 goals in five games. “It was an unbelievable experience for me,” he said. “To play with so many talented kids was a huge highlight and winning the championship was the best. “I was happy with my performances and was so glad
when I was selected for the All-Australian team. “I’m very proud to be in the team, but more happy that we won as a team.” Spotswood’s Ethan Bentley and Werribee Districts’ Lachlan Rzanovski were also involved in the Under-15 Victorian team.Emerson said he has made some great friends with his new team-mates and said the overall School Sport Australia experience was a positive one. This year, Emerson has also had an incredible season with the Altona Juniors, booting 59 goals. He said his next footy goal was to make the 2017 Under-16 Brad Johnson squad. “I want to play well and be selected for the Vic Metro team to play in the National Championships, my dream is to be drafted in a couple of years’ time,” Emerson said. Williamstown Juniors player Matthew Payne was also involved in the Under-12 Victorian team who claimed the School Sport Australia title.

41 WRFL JUNIOR FOOTY RECORD
BEHIND the goals last Sunday was a group of four young footballers watching the action in one of the WRFL junior finals’ games. Each of them proudly wore the colours of their own team.
They, themselves, had played earlier in the day and from their enthusiasm and chatter it was hard to believe that their team had actually lost and been eliminated from the finals.
As the siren sounded to end the quarter, each of them jumped the fence and instantly began a kick-to-kick session near the big sticks.
They were passionate about their football and had said that they enjoyed winning but obviously it was not the end of the world for them.
Kicking a football around with their mates was the most important thing that they were doing right then and there.
The social aspect of football clubs, in fact, any club or association, is a very important part and often drives a club as it goes about fielding teams on match days.
Often you hear stories about those great clubmen and women who spend a lot of their time doing a host of menial tasks, some large and some small, for the benefit of their club and its members.
The annual WRFL Unsung Heroes Award is a fitting tribute to one individual each season, but there are many others throughout each of the WRFL clubs who work tirelessly in order for their own teams to get on the park.
The umpires are the same. There are many tasks that certain individuals do continuously throughout the footy season within the umpiring fraternity.
These may be at training, in the social rooms or during match day. Often these things are done behind the scenes without fanfare and often without accolades or thanks.
Hopefully some people reading this might be inspired to say thank-you to the hard workers at their own club.
And as the junior finals are completed and the senior ones are about to get underway, let’s hope that everyone can enjoy the excitement and the atmosphere of good football. And when the pressure and the tension begin to rise just take a deep breath and remember those four young innocent kids kicking the football.
They too play to win, but as we all know everyone can’t be on the winning team. So, it’s important to be able to calmly move on, pick up your ‘own football’ and go have a ‘social kick’ with your mates.
