The Cavern Liverpool

BACKGROUND INFO:

Inspired by the jazz cellar clubs of Paris and in particular Le Caveau Français, Alan Sytner found the disaffected cellars of an old warehouse at 10 Mathew Street which he turned into Liverpool's first major jazz club. The basement consisted of "three parallel barrel vaults, each of them being about a hundred feet (33 meters) long and ten feet (3.3 meters) wide and joined by six-foot archways." Improvements were made to the floors and "the brickwork, in keeping with the cavelike atmosphere he hoped to create, was painted black… He was looking for a basic name like 'Cave,' something that typified the basic nature of the club, and the name 'Cavern' seemed to fit the bill perfectly." (Thompson 1994)

The club opened in January 1957 and for a few years only jazz and skiffle bands performed here. At the end of 1960 the first rock groups started playing there and it was here that the rock revival in Britain, the so-called "Liverpool Sound," was launched in the early 60s with The Beatles in 1961, Gerry & the Pacemakers, The Mersybeats (named after the Mersey Estuary), and many other less famous groups. Photo from Liverpool Echo – Mid-1960s

At least six albums of live recordings are known to have been made at The Cavern. The live presentation by the disc jockey and master of ceremonies on The Big Three EP gives some idea of the animation and excitement at one of these concerts – Hi there, all you cave dwellers, this is Bob Wooler, saying welcome to the best of cellars …

The original building and The Cavern were torn down in 1973 to make room for a parking lot. Just down the street a museum at 18 Mathew Street, The Cavern Mecca, was opened in 1981 where a mock original Cavern interior is on display. (Watson 1981) This section has been divided into three parts. The first part deals exclusively with The Beatles albums and songs that were recorded in The Cavern Club. In many cases only one or two songs on a bootleg CD were

actually recorded in The Cavern. So these songs were grouped by title and all the bootleg CDs that carried that particular song are listed beneath. The second part presents all the albums by other rock groups that recorded in The Cavern Club. And finally, the third part lists all the rock CD albums that were recorded in The Cavern Mecca, which opened in 1981.

There are no cave songs as such on nearly all these albums. Actually, only two cave-inspired songs are found here: “Cavern Stomp” by The Big Three and “An American Sailor at The Cavern” on the Cavern Sound single in 1965.
