2 | ARMA METRO NYC 2016 SPRING CONFERENCE
Dear Members, Colleagues and Friends,
Welcome to the 20th Anniversary of our annual ARMA Metro NYC Spring Educational Event, and once
again, we are happy to present our program at the Executive Conference Center in Times Square, the
crossroads of the world. Our special keynote speaker this year is the Emmy and Edward Murrow award
winning CBS News correspondent Michelle Miller. Ms Miller has anchored the CBS Evening News in
addition to providing significant reporting on the celebrated programs CBS This Morning and CBS Sunday
Morning with Charles Osgood.
Once again, this year’s lineup features many renowned presenters, timely and thought provoking topics
grounded in the Generally Accepted Principles developed by ARMA International. Our theme this year is
“Innovation & Inspiration, RIM & IG – The Time is Now!” I am particularly excited to dive into the data lakes
presentation by Ron Hedges and Galina Datskovsky.
Our programming has been underwritten by the generous support of our many sponsors, but most
especially our Empire State sponsor Iron Mountain, our Broadway sponsor Nuix, and our Wall Street
sponsors Access/Archive Systems, AdLib, Constellio, HPE, iManage, FileTrail, Zasio, and Zia Consulting/
Alfresco. Please be sure to visit them at their tables, and have your Raffle Cards stamped for the exciting
prizes to be raffled at the end of the event.
None of this would be possible without the army of ARMA volunteers from the tri-state area chapters who
have worked diligently under the guidance of event managers Mary Sherwin and David Smythe. Thanks
to the Presidents of our partner ARMA chapters, Lucy Rieger & Ann Gorr of NNJ, Matt Fisher of CT and
Deborah Tamborski of Long Island and their assigned member volunteers for helping us make this event
extra special. Finally, my eternal thanks go out to the Metro NYC Board and our dedicated and high-
achieving committee members who have given their time and resources so generously not just for this
event, but throughout the year. As this is my last Spring Conference as President, my opportunities to
express my gratitude to them for their dedication are dwindling, so let me do so once again.
The event has been pre-approved for 5.5 CRM and 4.5 IGP maintenance credits, and in keeping with
tradition, a special edition of our bi-monthly Newsletter exchange will be published and distributed at the
event. For more information on our upcoming activities, check out the chapter website at www.armanyc.org
All my best,

WELCOME!
Dear Chapter Members, Colleagues and Friends,
Welcome to the 21st Anniversary of our annual ARMA Metro NYC Spring Conference, hosted in collaboration with our partner chapters from New Jersey, Connecticut and Long Island. For the third year we are thrilled to host the event at the Executive Conference Center in Times Square, “The Great White Way” and “Crossroads of the World”.
Our keynote speaker this year Barbara Mistick, co-author of S T R E T C H: How to Future-Proof Yourself for Tomorrow’s Workplace. What better topic for us as we make our way in our ever-changing worlds of Information Governance and Records Management?Once again, we
are hosting a stupendous line-up of well-known speakers and hot topics this year. Our topics focus on the conference theme of Records and Information Management and Information Governance, Today and Tomorrow. Many thanks to our VP of Professional Development, David Smythe, for leading the charge in arranging our educational sessions. Our speakers include, but are not limited to, not one but two magistrate judges (Ron Hedges and Andrew Peck), several lawyers (Ken Withers of Sedona Conference fame, Sabrina Guenther, and Brian Corbin); two book authors – Barbara Mistick & William Saffady, as well as the CEO of ARMA International, Bob Baird.
Our topics are too numerous to mention here, and can be found in our Program Agenda. Our aim is to present practical and thought provoking educational sessions with something for everyone, including RIM and Leadership basics, case studies and strategic thinking, on highly relevant topics such as Email Management, Cybersecurity, the retention management of commonly held business records, the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Preservation, Spoliation and Information Governance.
Our programming has been generously underwritten by our many sponsors, especially by our Empire State sponsor Iron Mountain, our Broadway Key Note Sponsor Shred-It, and our Wall Street sponsors Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, enChoice and Gimmal. Without the generous support of all our sponsors, we would not be able to put on such an exciting and comprehensive event. Please be sure to visit all of our sponsors, and have your Raffle Cards stamped for the exciting prizes to be raffled at the end of the event (you must be present to win). My heartfelt thanks to Cindy Zuvich, VP Sponsorship and her team for coordinating all of the sponsor logistics.
Make sure to end the day in a magical way at our Networking Reception at the Crowne Plaza Hotel next door, and be wowed by the tricks of Eric Lerner, roving magician.
None of this would be possible without the army of ARMA volunteers from the Tri-state area chapters who have worked tirelessly as event planners to make sure it all comes together for all of us to enjoy this wonderful day. Thanks to the Presidents of our partner ARMA chapters, Lucy Rieger & Ann Gorr of NNJ, Emily Robertson of CT and Deborah Tamborski of Long Island and their assigned member volunteers for helping us make this event extra special.
I am honored to be working with the many savvy and dedicated members of the ARMA NYC Board and the other chapters who volunteer their time and provide their amazing talent to this event and throughout the year.
The event has been pre-approved for 5 CRM and 4.5 IGP maintenance credits, with CLE Credit Pending. And, in keeping with tradition, a special edition of our bi-monthly Newsletter exchange will be published and distributed at the event. For more information on our upcoming activities, please be sure to check our chapter website early and often: www.armanyc.org
Come enjoy our fantastic Conference!
Warm Regards,

This discussion between a federal magistrate judge and in-house practitioners of Information Governance will focus on some of the basics of IG, including its primary facets, operational considerations, and cross-border concerns for implementing IG programs across global organizations. The program will include a primer on two recently amended Federal Rules of Civil Procedure which are having a measurable impact on legal discovery and preservation obligations, which in turn factor heavily into decision-making and risk balancing by key IG stakeholders. Finally, the panel will discuss the practical implications of building and applying IG principles at large organiza-tions, including education, partnerships between disparate functions, culture change initiatives, and relevant metrics and reporting tactics.

ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY IN FINANCIAL SERVICES REGULATORY RECORDKEEPING
There is currently an unprecedented emphasis on security, accountability and transparency in global markets. Regulators are paying particular attention to secure data accountability, requiring data be stored in immutable form. Global SEC / MiFID / GDPR rules require highly secure records be stored in Write-Once Read-Many “WORM” compliant storage. This course will present real examples of highly secure data handling flops where fines have been in the billions of dollars! We will detail for you real-world corporate challenges and the very heightened scrutiny of business conduct for data held in immutable form.
PresenTer / JAMES F. dAWSONJames Dawson is a Director in the New York office of KPMG LLP’s Information Governance and Strategy Advisory Services practice. James has over 30-years of experience in supporting information governance for corporate legal departments, regulatory recordkeeping,

He has helped firms assess enterprise content management solutions, manage complex information lifecycle issues and navigate the processes and systems to control information assets and meet defensible data reduction for corporate general counsel. James has been responsible for information governance in several industries and verticals including several multi-terabyte data investigations, global privacy assessments, cyber investigations and cross country records management assessments. James has supported global risk mitigation and has assessed datasets and performed diagnostics for defensible dispositions.

OPERATIONALIZING THE NEW FEDERAL RULES ON DISCOVERY AND ELECTRONIC EVIDENCE: WHAT THEY MEAN FOR RIM, IG, AND IT
Businesses, institutions, and government entities create, use, and store information -- paper and electronic – on a regular basis and in accordance with Records and Information Management (RIM), Information Governance (IG), and Information Technology (IT) policies. Such policies should be designed to anticipate and respond to the duty to preserve information relevant to government investigations and civil litigation. In December 2015, the United States Federal Courts implemented new rules governing discovery in general, and eDiscovery – the preservation and production of Electronically Stored Information (ESI) in civil litigation – in particular. These rules were intended to reduce costs, speed up the legal process, and mitigate the downside consequences of lost data. It’s been a little over a year, and now the questions are: How have these new rules been working? How do these new rules translate into day-to-day RIM, IG, and IT operations?
PresenTers / RONALd HEdGES KEN WITHERSRonald J. Hedges, JD is the principal of Ronald J. Hedges LLC. He has extensive experience in e-discovery and in the management of complex litigation and has served as a special master, arbitrator and mediator. He also consults on

While a magistrate judge, he was the Compliance Judge for the Court Mediation Program, a member of the Lawyers Advisory Committee, and both a member of, and reporter for, the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Committee.

Since 1989, Ken has published several widely-distributed papers on electronic discovery and given presentations before more than 500 judicial, legal, records
management, and technology industry audiences. Ken is co-author, with Hon. Shira A. Scheindlin (ret.) and Prof. Daniel J. Capra, of the most widely-used law school textbook on electronic discovery and evidence.

INFORMATION GOVERNANCE – A PROGRAM, AN APPROACH, THE PEOPLE-CENTRIC REALITY
Launching an Information Governance (IG) Program is no small undertaking – in fact, it can seem like an exercise in boiling-the-ocean. Though the importance of managing information effectively is clear to most practitioners, how do we even get started? What does it mean to have senior management support? Is that enough? How do we craft the appropriate relationships with Legal, Compliance, Security, Privacy and IT.? Will they accept their new roles?
In this case study session, key workable components of an IG program will be shared along with an over-arching approach and some lessons learned.

WHAT GENERAL DATA PROTECTION REGULATIONS (GDPR) MEANS FOR RECORDS MANAGEMENT
Companies around the globe will face more expansive data protection obligations as the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect in May 2018. The GDPR raises the stakes for compliance by imposing new and more stringent data protection requirements and significantly higher fines for noncompliance. Many of the changes under GDPR will directly impact records management teams, for example through explicit record keeping, privacy by design, and other provisions. Nonetheless, companies should look to their records management teams for support even beyond GDPR’s explicit records-related requirements. Those teams will be integral as companies assess their day-to-day operations, processes and systems and develop a comprehensive GDPR compliance program in advance of May 2018.
