“Recreation Revival”

Philanthropist Joan B. Kroc gave $1.8 billion to The Salvation Army to build and operate state-of-the-art community centers in cities across the country. In association with GRA Architecture in Sacramento, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture was commissioned by The Salvation Army Western Territory to plan and design The Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center in Suisun City, California.

Sited proximate to Hall Park and the Suisun City Library, the Kroc Center provides worship and performing arts education, family life and personal development, and recreation opportunities to the underserved residents of Suisun City. The Kroc Center is a reclamation gem. Originally built as a city-owned recreation center and then leased to the YMCA, the property was purchased by The Salvation Army in December 2009 and has been converted into a state-of-the-art worship, community, education and recreation center. The building includes a 299-seat theater and a 130-seat multipurpose event space for banquets, meetings, weddings and community events. The family life and personal development component houses a lounge, short term child watch room, party room, café and commercial kitchen. The project complies with the State of California Green Code for sustainable design and energy efficiency.
