The carrier said it had worked with creative director Marc Newson to examine each element of the design and aesthetics of the experience. The system involves a special RFID frequent flyer ‘Q card’ which acts as a permanent boarding pass and is simply waved at a Q Card Reader to check in. Rex Boeing deal REGIONAL Express’ wholly owned Australian Airline Pilot Academy (AAPA) has signed a new agreement which will see it train pilots for Boeing offshoot Jeppesen in Australia. The three year deal will see more than 80 student pilots drawn from China, India and the Middle East each year coming to Wagga Wagga to learn to fly. Jeppesen is a leading provider of aviation training services, and is a subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services. New Indian operator UPMARKET India travel operator Peirce & Leslie has entered the Australian market this week, offering a range of tailor-made tour products to suit local needs. The firm provides destination management services to a select group of travel and tour consultants around the world, including the Virtuoso network. MD Shonali Datta says by limiting its operations to the luxury sector it can “provide a dedicated focus and deliver an experience that will exceed expectations”. See www.peirceandleslie.com. ACCC probes Stella/JTG THE Australian competition regulator has given the travel industry just over fours weeks to submit its support or opposition to the planned merger of Stella Travel Services and the Jetset Travelworld Group (TD 12 May). The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission released a ‘Statement of Issues’ paper today which provides preliminary views of “competition concern”, and identifies lines of further enquiry which the commission may wish to undertake in the future. The commission said issues that may “pose concerns” include the retail supply of leisure travel and product services, the wholesale supply of travel packages and tours, along with the supply of air ticket consolidation services. The competition watchdog said it’s concerned the pact would mean competition from Flight Centre may not “effectively replace the vigourous competition between the Jetset and Stella retail networks, and that post- acquisition competition at the retail level may become muted”. The result of which may lead to higher commissions, higher prices, reduced choice and/or poor levels of service for customers. It also said that the growth in online and direct channels may provide an effective competitive constraint to the merged firm. Qantas’ stake in the alliance (currently at 58% in JTG) was also flagged as a “barrier” as it “may have some ability and incentive to restrict access to some or all of its products” for those agents not affiliated with the group. The commission is calling for submissions by no later than 12 Aug, and a final decision on the acquisition is expected on 02 Sep. Go to accc.gov.au for more info. Big Embraer order BRITISH carrier Flybe, whichlast week signed a major newcodeshare pact with Air France(TD 14 Apr), has placed an orderfor up to 140 Embraer jets. At Farnborough overnight Flybesigned a firm order for 35Embraer 175s, as well as optionsfor a further 150 of the aircraft, with the first e-Jet set fordelivery in Sep next year. The aircraft are similar to theEmbraer jets operated by VirginBlue on lower capacity routes.

TravelManagers up 82% THE TravelManagers networkhas recorded a sales increase of82% for the six months to 30 Jun,with ceo Joe Araullo attributingthe strong performance to acombination of the quality of thegroup’s members and “thestability and breadth ofTravelManagers’ seniormanagement team”. Araullo said all segments of thebusiness had grown, with airtickets up 93%, accommodation up

88%, insurance increasing 78%,cruising up 76% and touring andpackages rising 74% overall. The top sales volume wasrecorded in New South Wales, with the largest growth inpercentage terms being the ACT,followed by South Australia. Four of the top ten sellingtravel managers members arebased in Victoria, which recordedthe largest dollar growth. Araullo said the increase wasdirectly benefiting groupmembers, with the number ofpersonal travel managersachieving more than $50,000commission more than double thefigure for the correspondingperiod last year. TravelManagers currently hasmore than 250 travel consultantmembers who work from homeacross Australia, supported by adedicated team at the company’sSydney office.

More BA strikes? BRITISH Airways may be set toface yet more industrial action, after the ongoing bitter disputewith cabin crew saw unionmembers vote to reject a finalpay offer from the carrier. 67% of those who voted wereagainst the deal which includedtwo years of guaranteed pay risesfrom Feb next year. The union will “discuss the nextsteps” with crew today.

AA/BA/IB approval THE US Department ofTransportation has grantedantitrust immunity to AmericanAirlines, British Airways and Iberiato allow them to implement ajoint transatlantic business. Under the ruling all oneworldpartners can work together acrossthe North Atlantic to more closelycoordinate international services. The dept found that on balancethe alliance was pro-competitive,providing lower fares in somemarkets as well as new non-stoproutes and better schedules. BA/AA/IB must make four pairsof London Heathrow slot pairsavailable to competitors for newUS-London services.

NOW this is what we call a lie-flat premium cabin. During a private tour of QatarAirways’ Boeing 777-300ER at theFarnborough Airshow TD waslucky enough to be shownthrough the crew rest area. Located above the cabin at therear of the aircraft, the area(pictured below) comprises eightprivate sleeping cubicles whereflight attendants can reallystretch out - as long as theydon’t try to stand up.

THERE are certainly some nicheareas in aviation publishing. At the Farnborough Air Showthis week in the UK one of themany magazines being handedout to attendees is the aptly-named Stainless Steel Focus. The publication (pictured) hasa lead story on the “positiveoutlook for stainless steel in thefirst half” alongwith an image of astainless steel planewhich looks like aset of pan pipes.

Etihad seeing strong recovery ABU DHABI-based EtihadAirways overnight reported itsstrongest ever first half, withlarge increases in both cargo andpassenger traffic. Overall passenger numbers wereup 11% on last year to almost 3.3million, with seat factors also up 1point to 72.5%. Hogan said that yields out ofEurope are still weak due to theeconomic situation, but someregions including Australasianflights from Sydney andMelbourne are doing well. He emphasised the challengeswhich Etihad was continuing toovercome, and the ongoing rapidnetwork growth which has seen itexpand to more than 60destinations in just six years. The traffic growth came in spiteof the major disruption to globalaviation during Apr due to theIceland volcano, with recenthighlights also including thelaunch of services to Tokyo,Baghdad and Erbil. “Despite the continuingeconomic challenges faced by allairlines, our investment ininfrastructure and in our serviceoffer is paying off,” he said. EY will operate a daily returnSeoul service using three-classA330-200 aircraft on the route. AND Etihad also formally tookdelivery of a new aircraft atFarnborough, as the launchcustomer of a new freighterversion of the A330. The A330-200F will enterservices with Etihad Crystal Cargoin Sep this year and will “make amajor contribution to building thestrength and network of our cargobusiness,” Hogan said. Travel.com.au’s takeon booking fees ONLINE travel companyTravel.com.au has weighed in onthe debate over booking feesfollowing Expedia’s comments (TDTue) saying it “remains the priceleader”, even with a booking fee. The firm says it “stronglyrecommends” that Australiantravellers should focus on thetotal cost of an airfare and notthe size of the booking fee. According to Travel.com.au gmBrand, Lisa Ferrari the firm hasdone numerous airfarecomparisons, and its researchindicates that even with a $14.95booking fee included, its priceswere below those of other onlineagents, whether they charged abooking fees or not. “Travel.com.au has neverneeded to resort to marketingcampaigns that shout about nobooking fees or price matchguarantees,” said Ferrari, referring to Expedia’s remarks. “It’s not the size or existence ofa booking fee that matters, butultimately the price you pay atthe checkout,” she said.

Earlier this month PacificFlierrequested authority to increaseservices on the route to thriceweekly (TD 07 Jul), however CShas claimed that PI has alreadybegun promoting the extra flighton its website without authority. Continental Micronesia says itdoes not object to PI’s application“so long as the Departmentinsures that PacificFlier’soperations comport fully with theDepartmant’s regulations andother legal requirements.” However, PI told the DoT that itwould like to start promoting thethird service once approved. “In fact, however, PacificFlierhas already marketed scheduledservice seats. Until recently,PacificFlier’s website was activelyselling scheduled service betweenGuam and Palau, the Philippinesand Australia despite the fact thatPacificFlier holds only Guam-Palaucharter authority,” CS alledges.
