Alabama Butterfly Atlas | alabama.butterflyatlas.org Red-banded Hairstreak Red-banded Hairstreaks are widespread and common in Alabama, probably occurring in every county. They are multi-brooded and, at times, may be encountered in large numbers. These hairstreaks are habitat generalists. They gather at puddle clubs. Females are often seen crawling on the ground, where they deposit their eggs. Ventrally, sexes are similar. Dorsally, males have solid gray wings. Female dorsal wings are gray with swaths of iridescent blue. Portions of dorsal wings are seen when wing-rubbing occurs. Female dorsal wings appear as flashes of blue when in flight. Width and color of postmedian band varies: may be red, orange, or orange-red. May be confused with Early Hairstreaks. Red-banded Hairstreaks have a light brown ground color; ventrally, they have a solid red/orange band rather than a loose orange spot- band. © Vitaly Charny
