When pro kayaker Rafa Ortiz makes the decision to paddle over Niagara Falls, he sets in motion an incredible series of events that eventually takes on a life of its own. To prepare for this mission, Rafa enlists the help of world-renowned paddler Rush Sturges and a tight team of their friends. Together they go on a remarkable three-year journey from the rainforest rivers of Mexico to the towering waterfalls of the U.S. Northwest. Their journey concludes in Canada where the team plays a cat-and-mouse game with local police before Rafa’s mission comes to a heart-stopping climax at the iconic Falls.

Mitu Monteiro, Cape Verdean multiple kitesurfing World Champion, attempts the first-ever solo crossing of his native archipelago’s twelve volcanic islands. With a wingspan of three meters, the Andean Condor is a master of flight who feels truly at home in rugged mountain terrain. Using thermal winds alone, the bird covers hundreds of kilometers a day and soars up to a height of nearly 5,000m above sea level. It’s capabilities make the condor a fascinating subject not only to biologists but to thermal pilots as well. If a bird can fly this way, can a paraglider do the same? This is the question that longdistance paragliding champions Hernán Pitocco and Horacio Llorens seek to answer. Steeped in myth and history, the Kashmir Himalayas are also an area of conflict between nuclear powers India and Pakistan. Snowboarders coming to the small border ski resort of Gulmarg need both guts and great guides. Ace adventure photographer Florian Wagner takes pros Elis Elhardt, Knut Eliassen and Marc Swoboda on an exciting heliboarding trip to taste the fresh powder on the ‘Roof of the World’. Wagner has built a quadcopter that lifts his camera to 4,000m (13,123ft), but he is as deeply interested in the war-weary people who live on the ‘line of control’ as in the sublime wilderness. The highlight of a journey full of contrasts is a helicopter trip to a face called the ‘Cathedral’ where the snowboarding trio draw endless lines into exquisite powder. Six years ago, Australian fishermen saw huge waves breaking at Pedra Branca, the southern-most land mass of Australia’s Continental Shelf. Local surfers investigated and the pictures made the surfing world shudder. It’s not just a rock. It’s not a just a wave. It is a monster at the edge of the world. Only six people have surfed it ever since. The wave is so powerful that the last two people to surf it broke their legs and were knocked unconscious. Twenty-two sailors and scientists have died there. As if that wasn’t enough to deal with, the area is also a permanent seal colony patrolled by great white sharks. Now one man, Alastair McLeod, wants to windsurf to the white rock, ride the biggest waves of his life, and windsurf back home. In the Pacific Ring of Fire, half-way between Kamchatka and Hokkaido, an icy and uninhabited island called Onekotan is found. In the south of this island there is a small volcano which rises from a circular caldera and Freeskiing pro, Matthias Mayr, has decided he must attempt its first ever descent. He persuades fellow pros Matthias Haunholder and Phil Meier to join him. Their journey commences and it’s not easy - the only way is a 30-hour boat journey across 500km of icy ocean threatened by relentless storms. After eighteen days of travel, they eventually reach the legendary island in one piece. Their experience, team spirit and their unfazed motivation to conquer the hellish paradise played a big part in getting them there. ‘Among Wolves’ (‘Entre Lobos’) tells the remarkable story of a poor country boy named Marcos, who at the age of 7 is handed over to his father’s employer, a rich landowner, who in turn delivers him to a life of labor with a hermetic goatherd in an isolated valley. The old man, who lives in a cave, is unused to human company and at first seems not very interested in having a live-in apprentice. The boy, who was abused by his parents, is frightened and equally aloof initially. Despite this, the shepherd begins teaching Marcos how to herd the goats, as well as how to care for himself and how to survive in the wilderness by trapping and fishing. The two develop an affection for each other, and the boy befriends the goatherd’s animal companions: a ferret, a civet, and an owl. Unfortunately, the goatherd soon becomes ill and dies, leaving Marcos to fend for himself. For the next twelve years he has virtually no contact with human beings, but does make additional animal friends – the wolves of a nearby den. This film is based on the incredible experiences of Marcos Rodríguez Pantoja, who lived alone in the Sierra Morena mountains from 1953 to 1965, when he was captured by members of Spain’s Guardia Civil and returned to civilization at 19 years of age.

Giraffes are extreme in every way – nearly six metres tall, they are wonders of physiology. But for a long time, scientists and conservationists paid little attention to Africa’s high society. Filmmakers also seem to overlook these gentle giants: in many films about the African savannah, giraffes are just extras since they seem quite boring – but that’s simply not true. Behaviour, social life and body constitution offer many surprises – giraffe families seem to mourn for their dead. And according to science, the dark patches in their fur are a way to regulate their body temperature in the hot savannah. Moreover, giraffes have a head start into life: during birth, the mother is standing – so the newborn’s first experience is falling about two metres down to the ground.There is not just one species of giraffe, but at least nine – some of them on the brink of extinction. In an attempt to save these animals, scientists are planning to capture, collar and relocate giraffes on a large scale. Loyal companions in the production of our crops for centuries, the little insects seem to have been overburdened. However, their work is crucial for our survival, as a third of what we eat is pollinated by bees. The reasons for the mysterious bee die-offs are unclear. Set amidst the Austrian Alps is a deep lake that has enthralled the world for decades: Lake Toplitz. It is said that a massive collection of controversial, classified documents and the remains of a treasure trove can be found in its depths. Allegedly, these items were stowed away by Adolf Hitler’s most senior followers just before the end of WW II. Back then, the area was known as the legendary ‘Alpine Fortress’ or ‘Alpenfestung’, a retreat for the German armed forces. According to myth, SS officer Ernst Kaltenbrunner arranged for the transport of 50 boxes filled with the gold reserves of the Third Reich. Harnas is a large farm in southern Africa that offers shelter to abandoned wild animals. Its residents are as varied as the countryside: lions, baboons, wild dogs, cheetahs, mongooses and antelopes. The van der Merwe family who own the farm take on volunteers from all over the world to help run their animal orphanage: the young people come to meet exotic animals and to get a taste of the ‘real’ Africa. City slickers from London, New York and Frankfurt suddenly become volunteers to help for weeks or months, while paying for their stay. Together, they feed, monitor and study around 400 types of animals. They get in close contact with wild dogs and other predators.
