This ancient giant is the Beluga Sturgeon, considered by some to be the larg-est freshwater fish in the world. Her unfertilised eggs be-come black gold, served in only the most expensive res-taurants as caviar. Sturgeons are now at the very edge of extinction because of the exclusive market for their eggs, but only the eggs can allow the species to live. Paradoxi-cally, the desire for caviar may now be the only chance they have for their future existence. When thunderclouds begin to gather over Botswanas Ka-lahari each year, 20,000 zebras get itchy feet. As the first fat raindrops hit the dust, southern Africas biggest ani-mal migration gets under way. In a never-ending quest for grass and water, the striped herds undertake an annual epic trek across the vast lunar landscape of the Kalaharis Makgadikgadi Pans. Most of the year, the Makgadikgadi is an inhospitable wasteland of windswept, salt-encrusted pans. For the areas water-dependent zebra, the Boteti River on the western edge of the pans is a dry-season life-line. However, it is also a death trap, with lions waiting in ambush and crocodiles lurking in dark riverside caves. As the drought tightens its grip, overgrazing along the shore-line forces some zebras into marathon daily roundtrips between water and grass. Dust and Stripes tells the story of this spectacular annual migration through the eyes of a single zebra family. Documenting their journey across this otherworldly landscape, ranging from vast lunar-like pans to rolling grasslands, the film explores the wonder of this great wilderness and pays tribute to its tenacious inhabitants.

It is a world of great beauty, full of colour and balletic flight. But it all came about because of flowers. Hummingbirds feed on nectar and in the process they pollinate plants. Over millennia, hummingbirds have become smaller and more specialised. Today, some feed from only one or two plants; others have become so small they resemble insects. These extreme animals need to feed every 15 minutes, yet they manage to survive the night, and some fly for 20 hours, non-stop, over the ocean. British ecologist and wildlife researcher Chris Morgan has tracked large predators in some of the wildest and most re-mote places on Earth. He now faces his greatest challenge yet: to find and film the Siberian tiger living wild and free in Russias Far Eastern forests. It has long been accepted as impossible to film the largest big cats on Earth in the wild. But then Sooyong Park, a Korean cameraman, emerged from years in the forest with some extraordinary footage. Nobody had achieved anything like it before or since. To get his remarkable footage, Sooyong spent years tracking tigers over their huge territories. When he had identified the places they visited regularly, he dug himself into an un-derground pit and, unbelievably, stayed there for months at a time waiting for the tigers to come. Once, the Iberian lynx thrived across the entire Iberian Peninsula. At the outset of the third millennium, sad rem-nants of some 150 individuals survive in two tiny isolated habitats: the rugged mountains of Sierra de Andujar, and the coastal swamps of Coto Donana. Until five years ago, both populations were quickly fading away. Their frag-mented habitats were shrinking even further, and they were starved by lack of prey and reduced by epidemics. But now, local authorities, scientists, landowners and oth-er groups have finally begun to act in unison, encouraged by the EUs Natura 2000 programme. Breeding stations have been installed and a migration corridor is being es-tablished to link the two populations. Rabbit populations that were wiped out by two epidemics have been reintro-duced, because where there are no rabbits, there is no lynx. On the Iberian Peninsula, primeval landscapes are practically non-existent, so the Iberian lynx has lived on cultivated land for centuries cattle, horse and pig pas-tures, cork oak forests, timberland, even holy sites of pil-grimage. The diversity and beauty of our locations is truly stunning. Thats why the character and history of this land are as relevant to our story as that of the big cat itself.

The snowy owl is able to hunt through six months of bright sunshine and six months of twilight. When summer arrives, our pair attempt to breed in unusual circumstances. the NeaNderthals dark secretA tomb of bones, 49,000 year-old Neanderthal bones, has been discovered by chance in a remote, mountainous re-gion of Northern Spain. It is an unparalleled find. It may help solve the biggest Neanderthal puzzle of all why we are here today and they are not. Mystery surrounds the cave system called El Sidron. The bones are buried 20m below ground, and almost a quarter of a kilometre from the tunnel entrance. How did they get there? The bones are not weathered and there are no teeth marks from wild animal scavengers. But there are other signs that tell a shocking story of how this group of six adults, three teenagers, two children and a baby may have met their death. Some bones have deep cuts, long bones are cracked and skulls crushed - distinct signs of cannibalism. Was it a result of ritual or hunger? What happened here 49,000 years ago will take us on a much bigger journey from El Sidron to the other end of the Iberian Peninsula where scientists are excavating beneath the seas off Gi-braltar in search of Neanderthal sites. Here we meet evo-lutionary biologist Clive Finlayson. He believes he knows why Neanderthals became extinct. But like so many other theories Finlaysons has no hard evidence. El Sidron may change this

Everybody remembers where they were on the 11th of September 2001. The world was in a state of shock. Al-most three thousand people lost their lives. 9/11 will for-ever remain a symbol of evil. This film shows a different side of 9/11 and is about peoples capacity for good. It tells the story of Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, that became synonymous with empathy, altruism, respect and tolerance. After the attacks of the 11th of September, the U.S.A. closed the airspace over America. More than 5,000 landings were cancelled. 255 machines on their way to New York were re-routed to Canada 38 directly to Gan-der. This small town with a population of 9,500 was asked to take in 6,140 unexpected visitors. And they did, for five days, with hospitality, self-sacrifice and compassion. They set up camp beds in schools and clubhouses, and took strangers into their own homes. Housewives cooked round the clock. Among those stranded were people of all na-tions, ages, religions and social classes. In the hours of fear and uncertainty, people became good friends. Some of these friendships remain to this day. One couple even married. In The Unexpected Visitors they all look back on these days and a heartwarming tale of stranded pas-sengers and helpful hosts begins...

Harnas is a large farm in southern Africa that offers shelter to abandoned wild animals.
