Administrative Message

WELCOME BACK to a great new year! We are excited for what the year will

bring. According to our students, they are hoping…

-“to get along with everyone and have a good year”,

-“to be positive all year”,

-“to get good grades”,

-“to be the best person I can be #dragonpride”

-“to learn, have fun, make friends, … and be myself”

We look forward to helping our students achieve these goals!

Students and staff have settled into their new classrooms and grades. The important work of students and teachers to

build the learning communities in classrooms has begun and it’s exciting to see students getting into routines.

As a staff, we want parents & guardians to know that we value your input and your role as your child’s first teacher.

We are looking at our communication practices, ensuring that we have appropriate systems in place to provide you

with the information you need on an ongoing and regular basis throughout the year. We encourage you to phone,

email, or drop in to set up a time to meet with teachers if you have any questions or concerns.

A new year is also a good time to remind everyone about some important SAFETY ROUTINES.

Pick-up and Drop-off:

If you are driving your child/children to school, please remember to be mindful of our busy parking lot. We ask par-

ents to drop-off and pick-up on the outside curb of the “horseshoe” so students don’t have to cross the pavement, and if

you are parking, please go all the way around to the parent parking lot at the south end (not the staff lot). Also, we

respectfully ask that you leave the wheelchair accessible parking stalls to those who require it.

Checking in at the office:

In order to keep everyone safe, it is vital that we know who is in the building at all times. When you come in the

school, we respectfully ask that you check in at the office. Once the bell has gone, we like the classes to have uninter-

rupted learning time; we therefore will keep lunches and other dropped off items at the office until a natural break.

Supervision:

We happily provide supervision from 8:25 until 3:30. If you have a child participating in extra-curricular activities

before after school, please make alternative arrangements for your other children. Our staff are not able to supervise

before or after school.

We look forward to a wonderful year. Please keep the lines of communication open and consider coming out to our

School Council meetings every month to stay informed. Meetings are always held the second Tuesday of the month at

7pm. Our first meeting will be on Tuesday September 13th. We hope to see you there!

HEALTHY RED DEER LAKE

Welcome back Dragons! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer vaca-tion and stayed active throughout the summer! Let's Get Fit at RDL! There are a number of physical activities going on at RDL this month. There is the "Read and Run Program" for the Junior High Stu-dents, "The Dragon 500 Run Challenge" for the Grade 5 stu-dents, a Cross-Country Running Program for students in Grades 3-4 and a Cross-Country Running Program for students in Grades 5-6. Junior and Senior Volleyball team tryouts have started. League play and tournament play will begin later this month. A reminder to the younger students, that there is hopscotch and four square on the as-phalt, as well as a variety of playground equipment - soccer balls, foot-balls, bouncy balls, skipping ropes for you to enjoy! Get moving Dragons!! We encourage all Dragons to find a program that they are interested in and Get Moving! Have fun with the Family Bingo that we have included in the newsletter. Healthy Red Deer Lake is also proud to announce that they will be taking part in the HASS Conference on November 23rd in High River. The HASS (Healthy Active School Symposia) are events designed to provide Alberta school communities with knowledge, skills and resources to enhance stu-dent wellness. HASS are a catalyst for sustained change within the partic-ipating school communities. The events focus on inspiring student leader-ship by developing the competencies needed to become engaged thinkers and ethical citizens with an entrepreneurial spirit, through a Comprehen-sive School Health approach. HASS empowers students to be ac-tive agents of change in building a school community that enhances their learning and fosters their personal growth and well-being. RDL is very excited to be a part of this conference and is planning to take a number of students and staff to the conference in November. Healthy Red Deer Lake Committee

The Peer Mediating Program will run from February 6 - June 8th for students in 5B. Training for these stu-dents will take place during the morning of February 2nd. The Peer Mediators have a very significant role at RDL and we ask that all Dragons respect their role and their ability to make RDL playground a safe and happy place. P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders) RDL is proud to once again have P.A.L.S. (Playground Activity Leaders in Schools). P.A.L.S. is a playground leadership program for schools. It encourages all children to participate in activities during recess breaks. The program will be run by Grade 6 students. The objective of the program is to increase physical activity, decrease conflict and reduce the incidence of playground bully-ing, provide a sense of belonging as well as provide a leadership opportunity for the Grade 6 students. The program will provide numerous games, challenges, events, skipping and many more exciting activities throughout the year. P.A.L.S. Program will also begin on October 3rd. Training for the program will take place during the afternoon of September 26th. Please contact Mrs. Dixon if you have any questions about either of the programs.
