For my family and friends, including many clients itwould come as no big surprise that I’m a big fan ofvarious art forms, my favorites being music and visualarts. The arts are an integral part of our communityand offer all of us a sensory connection to the morecreative aspects of our life and those around us. Art,whether it’s a well-written song or a beautiful abstractpainting can provide an escape from the all toofamiliar mundane aspects of daily life.

The arts have also become a primary strategy in mostof the work I do for clients and can dramaticallychange any environment when implemented properly. In fact, these creative treasures have the ability totransform public space and attract people, increasinglevels of activity and movement in areas that mayotherwise lack urban vitality. There is no betterexample of this than the Ross Street Piano, which willgrace our downtown streets again onJune 7thfor theOfficial Ross Street Patio Kick Off event beginning at11:45 a.m.– 1 p.m. where the piano will remain for theduration of the summer.

Since its inception in 2010, various local artists havebeen asked to make the piano their canvas, allowing itto be much more than just a musical instrument for allof us to enjoy. This year is no exception with BrianUsher sharing his skills and passion for art thissummer. Hegrew up in Southern California and hasbeenmaking art for much of his life. He studieddrawing and paintingat the Academy of Art in SanFrancisco in 2002, and receivedhis Bachelor of FineArts degree in Printmaking from California StateUniversity Long Beach in 2006. Hetaughtscreen-printing at Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro,California, and has also volunteered with thePrintmaking department at Red Deer College. Brianhas exhibitedhis work atThe Brewery Art Colony inLos Angeles and has recently had a collaborative piecewith fellow printmaker Tim Musso shownin”Collision and Equilibrium– American YouthPrintmaking Exhibition” in conjunction with thisyear’s Shanghai Youth Biennial in Shanghai, China. He now resides in Red Deer, Alberta, were hecontinues to explore a variety of themes and artisticmediums in his work.

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Munizas he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and theworld's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Riode Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”- self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint”the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiringcharacters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbagereveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imaginetheir lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT andCOUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley havegreat access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of thetransformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.
