Welcome To The WoRld of Red TuRTle!

When Rupa Publications, in its 75th year, decided to launch a children’s book

imprint, they searched very hard for an animal, plant or object that would

represent the best qualities of these books.

Fortunately, while hunting under the fat dictionaries and in the numerous

nooks and crannies of their office, the team chanced upon a wonderful

Red Turtle. Red Turtle was smart, cute—and looked very good on book

covers! So they decided to adopt it immediately.

Red Turtle agreed to have its picture appear on every children’s

and young adult book Rupa published, because the titles would be as

interesting, intelligent and good-looking as Red Turtle. The best writers

and illustrators from India—and some from outside India—have written and

designed the books, and they are produced with thought, attention and a

lot of love. Every child will want to read them, for they have all passed the

Red Turtle test.

From fiction to non-fiction, short story and poetry collections to quiz books

and illustrated books, the Red Turtle imprint will publish for children from

age eight upwards and for teenagers. Authors such as Ruskin Bond, Gulzar,

Derek O’Brien, Paro Anand, Samit Basu, Subhadra Sen Gupta and Musharraf

Ali Farooqi all loved Red Turtle too—and they are only some of the writers

we will be publishing in the coming months.

Many new authors and illustrators with exciting new ideas and books are also

Red Turtle’s friends now.

Here we present the first titles that will appear from January to June 2013

in the Red Turtle imprint. We hope that everyone will read, savour

and enjoy each one of them.

TigeRs foR dinneR Tall Tales by Jim CorbeTT’s Khansama

Ruskin Bond illustrations by sunaina Coelho

‘did you see him shooT a TigeR?’ i asked.‘oh, many Times,’ said mehmoud.

‘a TigeR a Week—ThaT Was noThing To caRpeT-sahiB!’‘did The TigeRs come To The house, oR did you go looking foR Them?’

Thus starts Mehmoud’s stories about working as khansama, or cook,

for the great shikari Jim Corbett. As deft with his stories as he is

with koftas, lamb chops, pies and milkshakes, Mehmoud has a

tall tale for every occasion. From wrestling with a cobra in his

bed, being carried away into the river by a muggermuch, to when

a tiger came looking for the cook, these stories leave little Ruskin

spellbound.

Join Mehmoud in the kitchen as he cooks up one delectable

meal after another, and gobble down his delicious stories of

man-eating tigers, incompetent maharajas, missing kitchen boys

and haunted pillows —all brought vividly to life by Sunaina Coelho’s

captivating illustrations.

10

Ruskin Bond has been writing

for over sixty years, and now has

over 120 titles in print—novels,

collections of stories, poetry, essays,

anthologies and books for children.

His first novel, The Room on the Roof, received the prestigious John

Llewellyn Rhys award in 1957.

He has also received the Padma

Shri, and two awards from the

Sahitya Akademi—one for his short

stories and another for his writings

for children. In 2012, the Delhi government gave him its Lifetime

Achievement award.

Born in 1934, Ruskin Bond grew up in Jamnagar, Shimla, New Delhi and

Dehradun. Apart from three years in the UK, he has spent all his life in India,

and now lives in Mussoorie with his adopted family.

A shy person, Ruskin says he likes being a writer because ‘When I’m writing

there’s nobody watching me. Today, it’s hard to find a profession where

you’re not being watched!’

sunaina Coelho lives and works in Mumbai

as a freelance designer, creating animation

for television and the Internet and illustrating

for books and magazines. She studied animation

film design at the National Institute of Design,

Ahmedabad. She likes to draw, read, cook

(and eat!), play with her cat and—whenever

possible—travel and see new places.

India, the brightest jewel in the Raj crown, was also a land burdened with

harsh taxes, unjust laws and innumerable restrictions. When Indians, under

the leadership of some of the most remarkable men and women ever to be

born, decided to overturn the yoke of a foreign power, their struggle was

one of extraordinary bravery, truthfulness and fortitude.

The story of India’s freedom movement is a unique tale of how the

ordinary people of a country defeated the mightiest empire in the world

through the forces of satyagraha and ahimsa. In this masterful account,

Nayantara Sahgal describes the twists and turns that led to this: the lives of

the leaders, revolutionaries and masses; the horrors of oppression; and the

triumphs of the Indians as they finally made their tryst with destiny.

A lucid telling by one of the country’s finest writers, this account

encompasses every important detail of the freedom struggle, and will inform

and inspire all young readers.

guLzAR translated from the hindi by rohini Chowdhury

unending fun, Timeless Wisdom and The magic of sToRies come alive

in These immoRTal panchaTanTRa Tales

There was once a king who had three stupid sons. A learned man visited

the kingdom and offered to teach the boys the true qualities of kings—

kindness, bravery and a sense of justice. He narrated to them

one story a day, and these became known as the well-loved

Panchatantra tales.

Gulzar turns these stories into story-poems, to be read

aloud or enjoyed alone. He describes how a rabbit outwits a

hungry lion, and tells us why a girl married a mouse. He amuses

us with a story about a mosquito who was an unwelcome guest,

and one about the foolish donkey who could not stop singing.
