Mother’s Day is May 11 th . It’s a me to show our appreciaon for our moms and it’s a me to think about how important their role in our family is. In the book of Joel, we read: “Tell it to your children, and let your children tell it to their children, and their children to the next generaon.” (Joel 1:3) Of course, this applies to both fathers and mothers – and actually to our whole society – since we all pass on learning and a legacy to the next generaon. But moms are parcularly important in the role of teaching children. Just look at some of the things we learn from Mom*: My mother taught me LOGIC. "Because I said so, that's why." My mother taught me FORESIGHT. "Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident." My mother taught me IRONY. "Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about." My mother taught me RELIGION. "You beer pray that will come out of the carpet." My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION. "Just wait unl we get home." And my favorite: my mother taught me about JUSTICE. "One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!" Moms do pass on this and much more to the next generaon. But the prophet Joel reminds us that we do best when we pass on not just worldly wisdom, but God’s Truth to the next generaon. How good it is when moms share their knowledge, wisdom, experience and love for God with us, because the next generaon needs wisdom and knowledge: “How much beer to get wisdom than gold, to get insight rather than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16) And moms have much to share. The next generaon also needs a moral compass. So moms have an important role of placing the Scriptures into the hands of their children and showing them that God’s Word is a lamp for their feet and a light for their path (Psalm 119:105). God’s Word helps children to learn right from wrong, and to be able to discern the devil’s schemes. This is so important in a world where the Truth of God has been compromised and so many are falling for the tricks of the adversary. We wouldn’t let our children wander unguided into areas of danger such as playing in traffic, or near the edge of a cliff, would we? Then we need to show our children the protecon, guidance and safety that comes through the wisdom found in the Scriptures. And finally, the next generaon needs love and prayer. You’ve heard the saying, “a face a mother could love?” Mom’s have been known to love us even when we do wrong things. They are proud of us, even when we finish dead last. They cheer us on, even though we gave up a long me ago. They kiss our boo-boo’s and they wipe our tears. And most importantly, they constantly liſt our name before God’s throne in prayer. Thank you Mom for leaving a legacy of Godly living and faith for the next generaon! In appreciaon and love, Pastor Augie *For more things our moms taught us, you can visit: hp://nyurl.com/MomTaught. Mother’s Day is May 11th. It’s a

time to show our appreciation for

our moms and it’s a time to think

about how important their role in

our family is. In the book of Joel,

we read:

“Tell it to your children, and let

your children tell it to their

children, and their children to the

next generation.” (Joel 1:3)

Of course, this applies to both

fathers and mothers – and actually

to our whole society – since we all

pass on learning and a legacy to

the next generation. But moms

are particularly important in the

role of teaching children. Just look

at some of the things we learn

from Mom*:

My mother taught me LOGIC.

"Because I said so, that's why."

My mother taught me

FORESIGHT.

"Make sure you wear clean

underwear, in case you're in an

accident."

My mother taught me IRONY.

"Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry

about."

My mother taught me RELIGION.

"You better pray that will come out of the

carpet."

My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION.

"Just wait until we get home."

And my favorite: my mother taught me about

JUSTICE.

"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn

out just like you!"

Moms do pass on this and much more to the next

generation. But the prophet Joel reminds us that we do

best when we pass on not just worldly wisdom, but God’s

Truth to the next generation. How good it is when moms

share their knowledge, wisdom, experience and love for

God with us, because the next generation needs wisdom

and knowledge: “How much better to get wisdom than

gold, to get insight rather than silver!” (Proverbs 16:16)

And moms have much to share.

The next generation also needs a moral compass. So

moms have an important role of placing the Scriptures

into the hands of their children and showing them that

God’s Word is a lamp for their feet and a light for their

path (Psalm 119:105). God’s Word helps children to learn

right from wrong, and to be able to discern the devil’s

schemes. This is so important in a world where the Truth

of God has been compromised and so many are falling for

the tricks of the adversary. We wouldn’t let our children

wander unguided into areas of danger such as playing in

traffic, or near the edge of a cliff, would we? Then we

need to show our children the protection, guidance and

safety that comes through the wisdom found in the

Scriptures.

And finally, the next generation needs love and prayer.

You’ve heard the saying, “a face a mother could love?”

Mom’s have been known to love us even when we do

wrong things. They are proud of us, even when we finish

dead last. They cheer us on, even though we gave up a

long time ago. They kiss our boo-boo’s and they wipe our

tears. And most importantly, they constantly lift our

name before God’s throne in prayer. Thank you Mom for

leaving a legacy of Godly living and faith for the next

generation!

In appreciation and love,

Pastor Augie

SUNDAY SCHOOL Rhonda Sutherlin Exciting times for RBTS Sunday

School!!! The weekly attendance

continues to grow & the regular

Sunday attendance has reached an

average of 40 children per week.

Thank you parents for taking an active

part in bringing your children to Christ.

We have a several new programs on

the horizon for your children. The first

is the new “Enrichment Program” every

Sunday at 9:45 a.m. The children will

be learning songs (including sign

language) to prepare for the next

performance for the congregation. I

would really appreciate having all

Sunday School children take part in

this great opportunity to worship the

Lord. There are adult enrichment

classes during the same time frame.

Now for the “big news”!!! On April 5th

,

Shelly Lynaugh & myself took six of the

4th

-6th

grade children to “The Summit”

at Concordia University in Irvine. This

year the theme was “Restored” built on

Colossians 3:9-12 focusing on the

restoration of Jesus.

This is a very interesting time in the

lives of these children. Their minds

and bodies are changing, they are

growing spiritually and they are

beginning to look to the world around

them to try and find their place in it.

Things that once seemed to make

sense now look less secure. Their

image of self and the world around

them is beginning to break apart and

look somewhat shattered. The

awesome truth is that God can remain

our constant in a changing world.

Through Christ we are restored!

The children participated in a day of

worship, games & 2 outreach projects.

One of the projects was participating in

“Restored” Service supporting My Stuff

Bags. Since 1998, My Stuff Bags

Foundation has been addressing the

needs of an often forgotten group of

American children – those who must

leave everything behind when they are

rescued from abuse, neglect or

abandonment, or must flee with their

mothers to the safety of a battered

women’s home. Tragically, these

children enter shelters with little more

than the clothes on their back and little

hope for the future. To help these less

fortunate children, each child provided

a ziplock bag containing toothpaste,

shampoo, conditioner, lotion and a

toothbrush. In addition, we made 2

blankets to donate to a needy child.

The second outreach project was at the

Irvine Ranch Conservancy. We learned

the history of the ranch and then took

part in helping “restore” habit by

planting native plants followed by a

nature hike. Besides getting to eat

lunch with the college students in the

cafeteria, this was their favorite thing

of the day!

I encourage all parents to be a part of

these exciting opportunities for your

children as they arise. If you are

interested in being a part of the

Sunday School in any way, please do

not hesitate to let me know. Thanks so

much for your continued support.

UPDATE — FAMILY MINISTRY STAFF ADDITION Dan Bitner

The call process is moving forward and

we plan to host site visits for the three

Candidates who are still in

consideration this month; you can find

biographic information for these

Candidates elsewhere in this

newsletter. During the visits, in

addition to a Preschool tour, interviews

and some small social events, you will

have the opportunity to meet them at

three different congregation ‘Meet &

Greet’ gatherings; each of these are

currently planned to be held at

6:30pm and will include light

refreshments. The Candidate names

and the dates for the gatherings are:

Jennifer Quinlan (Thursday, May 15th);

Joel Zander (Wednesday, May 21st);

Jeffery Moeller (Tuesday, May 27th).

After the visits the Call Committee will

review all of the input we have and

possibly do some additional reference

checking. When we have concluded

our research, we will schedule a Call

Service where we will present the

Candidate(s) that we feel are a fit for

the Family Ministry Director position

here at Redeemer.

As always, we ask you to please

remember the call process in your

prayers.

Your Call Committee: Bobbie

Ankenbrandt, Joe Flatt, Lori Batherson;

Rhonda Sutherlin (co-

chair), Shelley Lynaugh and ex officio

members Pastor Augie and Dan Bitner

(co-chair).

JENNIFER QUINLAN

Jennifer is from

Las Vegas, Nevada

where she is the

Director of

Christian

Education at First

Good Shepherd

Church since 2005.

She is currently

single, never been

married. She

attended Denver

Lutheran High

School and in

2002 graduated

with a Bachelor of

Arts in Religious

Studies from Concordia University, Irvine. She received her

Master of Arts in Family Life Ministry in 2008 from

Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska.

Jennifer began her service 12 years ago as an intern at Faith

Church in Fair Oaks, CA where she also was called as a

Youth Director from 2002-2005. Then in 2005 she was

called to her current church, First Good Shepherd in Las

Vegas. She has always worked at a church with a preschool

and First Good Shepherd goes up to 6th

grade where she is

very involved and has lots of experience with school aged

children. Her responsibilities here include youth and family

ministries, school music, music accompanist, and VBS.

Jennifer is very well rounded in Family Life Ministry, serving

the young and the old, from leading Chapel with the

preschool children, teaching Confirmation classes with the

teens, to leading marriage classes and ministering to the

elderly. She has a heart for people, and the knowledge and

passion to know and serve the community as well. She

knows the importance to connect with kids more than just

Sunday, by establishing a personal relationship and never

gives up on them.

She is a natural leader, who empowers others, while being a

strong planner and organizer who can see the big picture.

In fact, when lay leaders left her church, she saw the

opportunity to rise up other leaders. She has the right mix

of task/leadership ability and understands the importance

of volunteers and how to make them and their task be

successful. She feels the scope for the Redeemer Family

Life Director fits her passion perfectly and is willing to start

new things when needed.

Having a varied and complete Spiritual discipline in her life,

she knows God opens doors and that she needs to have

her eyes, ears and heart open to where He wants to lead

her. She loves her ministry and it will always be part of her

calling.

Joel Zander is

from Beaverton,

Oregon where he

is a Director of

Christian

Education at Our

Redeemer

Lutheran Church

in Tigard, Oregon.

He and his wife,

Krissa, have two

sons: Nathan (5)

and Caleb (2).

In 2000, Joel

received a

Bachelor of Arts

from Concordia

University in St. Paul, MN with a major in Parish Education

and Administration and a minor in Lutheran Confessions.

Then in 2010 he completed his Masters of Science in Family

Life Ministry at Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska.

He began his internship in Cohasset, MN at Our Redeemer

Lutheran Church and continued his service there through

2006 until he moved to his current position in Tigard, OR.

Joel is very familiar with FLM (Family Life Ministry) concepts

and methodologies and is excited to put them into practice

where ever God might lead him. Growing up with his father

as a Pastor, he had a strong Christian upbringing that lead

him to a positive faith journey in his youth and wants to pass

that on to others. He understands the importance of

building strong relationships and the importance of parents

planting the seeds early in their children’s lives. Joel has a

good understanding of early childhood education and

included positive personal experiences during his interview.

He also has a good understanding of community and the

church’s responsibility to reach out to that community.

Joel sets ambitious goals, but is intentional about seeking

God’s guidance mid-course. He appreciates the broad

scope of our FLM description and also knows you will need

volunteers to carry it all out, with the understanding of the

need to support, train, equip and celebrate those volunteers.

He likes our Worship, Grow, and Serve definition. Wherever

God calls him, he will continue to grow, learn, and serve the

Lord vigorously.

JOEL ZANDER

Jeff Moeller is from

Akron, Ohio where

he is a veteran

Director of Christian

Education and

teacher, with over 25

years of service.

Currently he is the

Director of Youth

Ministry at Gloria Dei

Lutheran Church and

also teaches fifth

grade at Redeemer

Lutheran Church and

School where he also

serves as a

Consultant and

Camp Director. He specializes in outreach, discipleship,

youth and administrative ministries of the congregation. He

has experience in a variety of settings, including urban,

suburban, rural and small city environments. He has served

congregations and schools in Washington, Missouri and

Ohio.

Born to Bob and the late Peg Moeller in Indianapolis, IN, Jeff

grew up with a younger brother and 3 older sisters.

Growing up he enjoyed his family and playing sports. He

graduated from Lutheran High School of Indianapolis in

1982.

Jeff attended Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska,

graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor of Science degree in

Secondary Education. In 2004 he earned an MBA from

Webster University in St. Louis, Missouri. His career

experience includes extensive synodical and district service,

including the Great Commission Convocation, National

Youth Gatherings, Transforming Congregation Network,

Mission U and various boards and committees for the Ohio

and English Districts.

Jeff is married to Kimberly Haase, an advanced practice

nurse. Their 22 years of marriage has been blessed with

three children: Zachary, Rachel and Natalie. Jeff, Kim and

their family enjoy sports, traveling and exploring the

wonders of God’s creation. They are big fans of the St. Louis

Cardinals, even though they currently reside in Akron, Ohio.

Besides Jeff’s valuable experience, gifts, and skills he has a

passion for life span education, and is excited about the

breadth of the RBTS Family Ministry job.

We are continuing in our ‘adjustment’

phase, but do have most of the kinks

ironed out with the new system. Also,

there is some physical work that

remains to be done, which should be

completed over the next couple of

weeks. The work includes installing one

half sized acoustic panel, some final

adjustment on the Choir mics and

making sure all of our wireless devices

are operating properly with the new

equipment.

The next step will be to design and

then build the Choir / Band area raised

floor. To get some input, we will be

planning a trip or two to Churches that

have the same ‘shared’ space issues

that we have. Our goal is to minimize

the effort necessary to reconfigure

between the Choir and Band setup,

while at the same time enhancing the

look of the area. We also plan to

review the possibility of adding a loop-

system that transmits the sound in a

way compatible with modern hearing

aids.

QUESTIONS FOR FRIENDS AND

MEMBERS OF RBTS LUTHERAN

CHURCH:

What is LCEF? Why does it exist?

Why should I care about it? Would

RBTS Lutheran Church exist without

it???

You may (or should) know the answers

to these questions. Our church exists

because of our faith in Jesus Christ. It

exists because we have a beautiful

facility in which to worship. Our facility

exists because of the support, funding,

and loan provided by the LUTHERAN

CHURCH EXTENSION FUND.

Here is their MISSION STATEMENT: To

support the Church in fulfilling its

mission of sharing the Gospel of Jesus

Christ by being a Christ-centered

servant partner of the LCMS, ensuring

that funds and services are available
