Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Many this time of year make their New Year’s resolutions. For 2018, I pray the peo- ple of Redeemer look deeper into what life is all about and especially think about their spir- itual and eternal welfare. In the Ephesians passages above we learn that Satan’s resolution seven days a week 24 hours a day, is to destroy everything good in your life, especially your faith in Christ. We need to be able to always stand firm against the attacks of the devil, which by the way, come in many different forms and ways. Usually Satan is whispering one of two lies into our ears: either our problems are too big for God, that God’s not big enough to handle our problems or God is too far above them or we are insignificant to God. The second lie is one that affects on average about 600 of our members every week, and that lie is that we are “just fine” without any need to be in God’s Word for even weeks at a time, maybe even years. We don’t need to be regularly strengthened or forgiven or nourished in God’s Word. We don’t need to eat and drink the body and blood of Christ. Even Jesus, when in this world, took time to be nourished and strengthened in God’s Word. Well the truth is you are no better than the very Son of God, and make no mistake, as one who claims to be a Christian, you have a target on your back and Satan is truly work- ing on you every day. And though you may not see it or feel it, every moment away from the Word you are weakening in faith and understanding of who you truly are and who Christ is. And you are only moments from doubt and unbelief all the time. I hope you take ad- vantage of all the opportunities to gather around God’s means of grace in worship. Worship should be a priority in our lives; gladly hearing the Word preached and proclaimed, remind- ed of our baptisms, through which we were made members of God’s kingdom of grace, the body of Christ, the church. May we see the treasure of meeting our Lord in worship, as He physically comes down from heaven, feeding us with His very body and blood in, with, and under the bread and wine of Holy Communion. (Redeemer will hold about one hundred and eighty two worship services (182) this year). Talk about worship opportunities! Second, I pray that we take the opportunity to grow in our understanding of the word through deeper study in Bible Study. (Redeemer offers several opportunities a week to be in a deeper study of the Word). And thirdly, I hope all of us, who know Jesus as Savior, persist in looking for ways to serve the Lord and each other with our time, talents, and treasures, as we bear one another’s burdens in love. If you love Jesus and want to worship Him and grow in His love for you as He comes to meet us in Word and sacrament, if you want to learn more about Him, have your kids learn about Him, tell others about Him (around the world and right here)? If you want to grow and be nourished in faith and be able to stand firm against the devil, then make it your New Years resolution to be involved! Come to worship! Come to Sunday School and Bible Study. Be involved with the people of God here at Redeemer. As the redeemed children of God, may the Holy Spirit strengthen and encourage us as we live out the year of 2018. In His Service, Pastor Currao

JANUARY 2018

Dear Friends in Christ,

1 Peter 5:8 tells us; 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Many this time of year make their New Year’s resolutions. For 2018, I pray the peo-ple of Redeemer look deeper into what life is all about and especially think about their spir-itual and eternal welfare.

Well the truth is you are no better than the very Son of God, and make no mistake, as one who claims to be a Christian, you have a target on your back and Satan is truly work-ing on you every day. And though you may not see it or feel it, every moment away from the Word you are weakening in faith and understanding of who you truly are and who Christ is. And you are only moments from doubt and unbelief all the time. I hope you take ad-vantage of all the opportunities to gather around God’s means of grace in worship. Worship should be a priority in our lives; gladly hearing the Word preached and proclaimed, remind-ed of our baptisms, through which we were made members of God’s kingdom of grace, the body of Christ, the church.

Regular Church Attendance: Although our Sunday Worship attendance has remained fairly stable over the last decade, (averaging approximately 300 in a service) most of our member-ship attends less than half of the time. Committing to regular church attendance would encourage others to do so as well and would bless both us and their families. Bible Study/Sunday School Attendance: This single commit-ment would radically effect our Church! To be consistently in the Word of God would have a rippling effect, for God’s Word is “Sharper than a two edged sword, and never goes out void.” Op-portunities on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings, Thursday afternoons and bi-weekly Book of Concord studies make it easy and convenient to be in the Word here at Redeemer. This is where the new revolution will take place and how our Church will see growth inwardly and outwardly. Fellowship Participation: Staying after Sunday Worship, attend-ing a Soup Supper or other event, allows us to build the bonds of membership and community here at Redeemer. Of course, we always have coffee and refreshments, but the real reason is to create unity in the Body of Christ. Set aside time to share your-self with others, and choose to be a part, not apart. Stewardship (Time, Talents and Treasure): It is true; the same group of people continues to do the bulk of the volunteering and giving. They know the blessings of doing so, and the importance it carries for the Kingdom of God. Will you consider joining them and knowing the blessings of giving for yourself? How can God uniquely use your gifts here at Redeemer? Outreach: Statistically speaking, new people attend a Church not because of a Pastor or the building but because someone invited them to come. We all have a Calling to the Great Commission to actively reach out to others. Who will you invite to church?

THANK YOU AND MANY BLESSINGS IN 2018!

Resource Center—New Books

The Reformation Many recognize the name Martin Luther when they think of the Reformation, but this era was filled with other fascinating personalities and dramatic changes across every aspect of human life throughout the Western world. The Reformation is a richly illustrated and engagingly written overview of this amazing time of change and renewal in the Christian Church and helps the reader sort through the complex chain of events that shook both church and state to their very foundations. You will want to display this exquisite book on your coffee table, in your church library, or anywhere you can easily flip through this informative and beautiful book. Martin Luther’s 95 Theses Did Martin Luther wield his hammer on the Wittenberg church door on October 31, 1517? Did he even post the Ninety-five Theses at all? This collection of documents sheds light on the debates surrounding Luther’s actions and the timing of his writing and his request for a disputation on the indulgence issue. The primary documents in this book include the theses, their companion sermon (“A Sermon on Indulgence and Grace”, 1518), a chrono-logical arrangement of letters pertinent to the theses, and selections from Luther’s Table Talk that address the Ninety-five Theses. A final section contains Luther’s recollections, which offer today’s reader the reformer’s own views of the Reformation and the Ninety-five Theses.

THANK YOU FROM MAXX FISHER I am just writing to you to again say thank you and to offer a brief update of my life at the seminary.

I want to thank the Foundation, the Board of Evangelism, Individual Aid, and ALL the congregation that has kept me in their prayers and support me in this life journey towards the ministry.

I have just started the 3rd quarter of my second year. I will be receiving a Vicar-age placement in April. I have no idea where that will be or what it will look like. I do know however, that I am great-ly looking forward to the opportunity. God has blessed me with so many oppor-tunities past, present and future so it was no easy task to set aside some of them for the time being and to go right into vicarage. Now that I am, and have that clarity of focus I cannot wait to begin learning and growing under my Pastoral Supervisor at an awesome congregation.

School is still in the present and it contin-ues to go well. I love my classes this quarter. I will be learning about the Holy Spirit, Isaiah and the Prophets, preach-ing and a Christian response to world religions. I fully intend on working hard and getting feat grades that reflect learning and understanding.

I have also taken on the Manager spot for our Concordia Tennis Team. We will be playing some colleges here in St. Louis as well as scheduling some matches with other local seminaries. We have a few students who are new to the game and I can already tell the season is going to be a blast .

I don’t know when I will be in town again but I know it will happen at some point. I look forward to helping with liturgy and maybe even preaching again! Being able to practice with you all supporting me does more for a young Seminarian than you will ever know. I love you all deeply. Please continue to be in God’s Word and share His Word to those in the commu-nity of Seymour. We all need it so des-perately. For in Christ alone is our only and greatest hope. In Christ, Maxx Fisher

Estate Planning? Include Redeemer Lutheran Church Foundation

Did you know you can express your commitment to the goals of Redeemer Lutheran Church through a planned gift? Once you have provided for loved ones in your Will, you may want to include a gift of money, stock, or property to the Redeemer Foundation. Your gift will be a lasting tribute to your concern for the mission, while guaranteeing Redeemer’s long-term future. For further information on how to include the Redeemer Founda-tion in your Will, contact the church office at (812) 522-1837 to speak with a representative of the Foundation.

2018 LIFE LIGHT BIBLE CLASS

On January 11, 2018 at 9:30 am in the Parish Hall, the first class on “Law & Gospel” will begin. Sign up by calling the office, 522-1837, or Ray Friend at 812-445-3367, to ensure adequate materials are available. The goal of LifeLight is that through a regular program of in-depth personal and group study of Scrip-ture, more and more Christian adults may grow in their personal faith in Jesus Christ, enjoy fellowship with the members of His body, and reach out in love to others in witness and service. The class consists of personal study prior to class, group discussion and summary by the Pastor. Refreshments are provided. A free will donation covers the cost of the study material.

Stewardship Corner

Celebrating New Years is a celebration of the past and the future. We take stock of the past with thanksgiving and sometimes even relief (that it’s over), and we look to the future in the hope and anticipation and perhaps even worry of what it holds.

The point is that New Year’s celebrations remind us of who we are as opposed to who we would like to be; what we have done in comparison to what we want to do. It reminds us of our accomplishments, but mostly it reminds us of our failures. What we’ve lost. Who we’ve lost.

New Years is our own version of Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. And we all play Scrooge. We are visited by the ghosts of our pasts, presents, and futures.

St. Paul writes: “The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has made up his mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work. As it is written, ‘He has distributed freely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness endures forever.’ He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness. You will be enriched in every way for all your generosity, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God (2 Cor. 9:6-15).

St. Paul tells us that the Lord of all will both supply and increase what we need to give to the church for its work in and for the world. He tells us that this work that God is doing in us will enrich and bless us in every way and through this it will produce thanksgiving to God. With this in mind, here is some practical advice to help you take stock of your giving of years past, which will help you to change what needs to be changed, im-proved, or done away with altogether.

First, attend the Divine Service to receive God’s gift of forgiveness, life, and salvation. If you’ve not been faithful in attending worship to hear the preaching of God’s Word, to receive forgiveness, and feast of the rich food of our Lord’s body and blood for the eternal benefit of your body and soul, then repent and come to receive the gifts God freely gives. God doesn’t want your money. He wants you—all of you (Matt. 22:20-22).

Second, pray for the Lord’s help. Your right as a Christian is to speak with your Father, the King of all creation, freely through His Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ. Go to the throne of grace and ask for strength and wisdom to follow His bidding faithfully (John 15:1-16).

Third, consider what the Church is and what the Church does. The Church is a mercy place. It inhales the mercy of the Father by the death, resur-rection, and ascension of His Son through the preaching of the Gospel and the Sacraments. It exhales this mercy in love toward the neighbor. You are a member of the Church of God’s family. Thus, you are not only a recipient of God’s mercy, but a bearer of that mercy for the life of the world. You spread that mercy in showing mercy through the generous giving of your income to support the work of the Church in and for the world, as the Israelites did in the Old Testament (Lev. 27:1-34).

Fourth, take stock of your current giving in light of the New Testament’s teaching on supporting the work of the Church. Are you giving of your first fruits, taking it out of your paycheck first, or does God get what’s left over? Are you giving voluntarily and cheerfully? Are you giving propor-tionally and generously? The Old Testament required a tithe, ten percent. The New Testament gives freedom to be generous, to give more for the Church’s work. Are you relying on God’s promise to provide and increase what you need to do His work? If your answer is no to any of these, repent. If God gave you His only Son, will He not provide for you all things, even physical things? Trust Him, His Word, and heed it.

So, don’t let your past define your future. Rather, commit for the year a generous proportion of your income, which is God’s gift to you for this body and life.

The poster layout to the left is being developed to keep the members of our congregation up-to-date

on the status of our mortgage balance on the Fellowship Hall Addition. There will be two (2) posters on easels: one at the front of the church in

the Narthex and one somewhere near the Welcome Center in the Parish Hall. Adjustments

will be made routinely to reflect what Debt Reduction funds have been received and what the

current balance is of our loan account with the Lutheran Church Extension Fund. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel

free to contact John Beatty or Joe Joiner.

Thank you for your generous donations to our campaign. We hope that you will be able to

continue to be regular contributors to the Debt Reduction Fund.

KIDS FOR CHRIST

Kids For Christ met once in December for their Christmas Party. Bible stories were read

and crafts and games were played. The kids also made

their own snack manger scene with Baby Jesus wrapped in a blanket and a stable made out of pretzels and potato sticks. Next meetings for January will be January 10th and

24th. Please plan to join us! Kids are always encouraged to

bring a friend.

Thank You to All At this time we and our families would like to let all of you know how much we appreciate all of the kind words, wonderful cards, and gifts that you gave us this Christmas. We are truly grateful, not only for what you gave, but for the expression of Christian love at the center of your giving. Your gifts of love remind us of the gifts our Savior has given us; forgiveness of sins and eternal life. Thanks again for your thoughtfulness. May God’s peace and joy be with you always.
