REDEFINING QUEENSWAY CONCEPT DESIGNDESIGN RATIONALE
B U R N S + N I C E
INTRODUCTION
The council and its partners are passionate about Queensway and we are excited about the opportuni es to redefi ne it as part of these streetscape proposals. We would like to make sure that a reinvigorated Queensway will be one that will a ract new interest and investment to the area and one that caters for its large residen al community, local workers and tourists.
To help inform the design process we held a workshop that was a ended by local residents and businesses, as well as a three day exhibi on in Whiteleys. This provided the Design and Project Team with a greater insight into what the local community wanted for Queensway and in par cular for the streetscape itself.

• Complement the historic quali es of Queensway by using Yorkstone paving on footways and granite se s to carriageway
• New tree plan ng to provide green link to Kensington Gardens
• Introduc on of dedicated delivery zones • Reten on of all the motor cycle, disabled parking

COMMENTS FROM PREVIOUS PUBLIC CONSULTATION
DESIGN RESPONSEPROPOSALS AND BENEFITS
1. FOOTWAY • They are too narrow • Wider the be er
• Pavements widened along Queensway to provide accessible, safer pedestrian environment
• The carriageway has been reduced to 4.5 metres to allow for wider footways without adversely disrup ng traffi c fl ows
• Wider footways provide be er opportuni es for tree plan ng, street ligh ng & al fresco dining
2. LOADING • Should be restricted to specifi ed mes
• Is footway widening possible without impac ng on loading?
• Loading needs to happen at a me when it will not disturb residents
• Restricted loading mes outside core shopping and trading hours
• Provision of more designated loading bays to reduce conges on by adding to capacity
• Shared surface loading bays. Outside loading mes the space can be used as footway
• Future consulta on to take place on proposed hours
3. PARKING • Less on-street parking • It’s worth losing parking to have wider pavements• Disabled parking should be maintained • Casual on-street parking is essen al
• Parking should be reduced to 1 to 2 hours
• Dedicated parking bays in the north and south sec on of Queensway
• No loss of disabled parking spaces• No loss of motorcycle bays• No loss of taxi ranks
4. CYCLING • Contra fl ow cycle lane should be considered
• Cycle parking provision needs to be thought-out• Retain some cycle parking on Queensway. Considera on
should be given to relocate some on side streets
• Cycle Hire is a good thing
• Contra fl ow cycle lane was explored but could not be accommodated within the central sec on
• North bound cycling maintained
• Cycle parking ra onalised to make it easier for shoppers who cycle & for commuters. Cycle parking located along side streets where possible to reduce street clu er in Queensway
• Cycle Hire provision relocated to complement wider network. Discussions with TfL are ongoing
5. STREET LIGHTING
• Good ligh ng levels needed that are consistent throughout the street
• Ligh ng is important feature of the street
• New wider pavements give more fl exibility to achieve a coherent ligh ng design for the street
• Fes val ligh ng infrastructure is proposed
• Explore poten al for a bespoke design for Queensway
6. PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS
• Crossings are gateways into Queensway
• Diagonal crossing at Porchester Gardens is supported
• Improved crossings throughout street with addi on of raised crossing points to improve accessibility
• Removal of guardrail and staggered crossing on Bayswater Road to create be er connec on to Kensington Gardens
• Diagonal crossing proposed
7. TREES • Trees should be part of the scheme and greening the street is posi ve
• Semi mature trees are proposed along Queensway
8. PUBLIC SPACEAT PRINCESS COURT
• Good idea but needs to be well managed • Access to Princess Court must be maintained and not
impeded
• Develop a design in conjunc on with the Princess Court & Queens Court residents and the new freeholder of the land.
The overall aims of this scheme are to establish Queensway as a vibrant shopping and leisure des na on, crea ng a streetscape environment that will be enjoyed by residents, businesses and visitors alike.
