Focused Approach to Explicit Language InstructionPacing Guide – Essential Content
Dutro, S., & Helman, L. A. (2009). Explicit language instruction: A key to constructing meaning: Research-Based Instruction in Grades K-6. In L. A. Helman(Ed.), Literacy Development with English Learners: Research-Based Instruction in Grades K-6. (pp. 40-63). New York, NY: Guilford Press.
A focused approach to explicit language instruction involves attention to three critical strands: functions, forms, and fluency.
Functions Tasks that learners must engage in as they use English purposefully (Halliday, 1973}
Forms Discourse and grammatical tools necessary for commu-nicating at many levels in English (Doughty & Williams, 1998)
Fluency Accurate and fluent use of language that English learners develop when they have numerous opportunities to practice
