Officials of National Merit Scholarship Corpo-ration (NMSC) announced the names of approxi-mately 16,000 semifinal-ists — including 21 from Redmond schools — in the 59th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These academically tal-ented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competi-tion for some 8,000 Na-tional Merit Scholarships worth about $35 million that will be offered next spring.
About 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.
NMSC, a not-for-profit organization that oper-ates without government assistance, was established in 1955 specifically to con-duct the annual National Merit Scholarship Pro-gram.

In just a few weeks, Red-mond will have one more option for those looking to get into shape or take control over their personal fitness.
On Oct. 12, 24 Hour Fitness at 7320 170th Ave. N.E. in Redmond will open its doors to the community. Although there are two 24 Hour Fitness locations in Bellevue and one in Kirkland, this will be the first gym the company has opened in Redmond, which will be housed in the old Top Foods building.
Fitness manager Christy Wondercheck said the new
“Super Sport” location is 50,000 square feet and significantly larger than the surrounding locations.
“It’s a lot bigger,” she said. “It’s the largest we have in this area.”
As a “Super Sport” location, Wondercheck said the 24 Hour Fitness in Redmond is not only larger, but also offers more amenities than other loca-tions. She said these include towel service, more Group X fitness classes such as Zumba, group training and suspension training (TRX). The soon-to-be-open gym will also have more exercise machines — some with personal viewing screens so people can watch whatever
TV channels they want without disrupting others — a separate room for spin classes, a basketball court, a swimming pool, sauna and steam room, a functional training area and a Kids’ Club. There will also be pickle ball and volleyball available for anyone who wants to play.
Parking at the new club is available in the lot in front of the building.
Wondercheck said 24 Hour Fitness has been in the greater Seattle area for 15 years and they decided to open one in Redmond because they were looking for a location that would be accessible to people. And being open 24 hours makes it easy for people to go to the gym whenever they can.
“We do make it conve-nient for people with the 24 hours,” Wondercheck said.
The 24 Hour Fitness in Redmond will have more than 100 employees and Wondercheck’s job is to oversee the club’s fitness programs. She said she will work with 20-30 trainers, training them to make sure they are coming up with
the appropriate exercises for their clients and making sure they are enjoying their jobs. Wondercheck, who has been with the company for eight years and worked at the downtown Seattle and Northgate locations, is also the go-to person when they partner with physical therapists and help people transition into a gym set-ting. Another aspect of her job is working with compa-
nies and helping them get their employees involved in fitness.
Wondercheck said while opening a new club and meeting new people is always exciting, she is looking forward to helping people get involved in fitness the most.
“I’m looking forward to helping the Redmond com-munity reach their fitness goals,” she said.

24 Hour Fitness, Wonder-check said gym-goers must have a membership at the “Super Sport” level. The company offers single-club or multi-club memberships, as well, so people can select which gyms they want to go to. If people want to join the gym or switch their mem-bership to be specific to the Redmond location, Wonder-check said all they have to do is stop by the gym.

Redmond North Little League will host the Jackson Roos Memorial Field plaque unveiling and “Heading for Home” ceremony at 4 p.m. on Oct. 4 at Redmond Ridge Park.
State Sen. Andy Hill and King County Council Member Kathy Lambert are scheduled to attend, along with representatives of King County Parks & Rec-reation and the Washington State Recreation & Conser-vation Office.
The event will kick off the construction phase of Red-mond North Little League’s “Renovate the Ridge” campaign, which has raised $1.7 million to replace the
park’s dirt fields with all-weather synthetic turf playing surfaces.
“We want to invite the public to see the progress we’re making and to say thanks to our many volunteers, civic leaders, and Little
League families for their support,” said J.D. Klein, president, Redmond North Little League. “They are our
home field advantage.”The ceremony will feature
the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate Jackson Roos, the Redmond North Little Leaguer who died from injuries sustained in an accident at his home on Sept. 26, 2012. Redmond North Little League has dedicated the baseball diamond at Redmond Ridge Park “Jackson Roos Memorial Field” to honor Jackson’s kindness, com-petitive spirit and love of baseball.
Located at 22915 N.E. Al-der Crest Drive, Redmond Ridge Park is the official home field of Redmond North Little League and
serves approximately 30,000 residents in the Union Hill/Novelty Hill area. Because there is only one baseball diamond, and it’s often un-playable in wet weather, the league must rely on facilities outside the community to host games and practices.
“The new turf surfaces will mean that hundreds of kids and their families can use their neighborhood park all year round,” Klein said. “They’ll be able to spend time outside at the field instead of in the car traveling. Staying in the area will also help local busi-nesses and the Redmond Ridge economy.”
Work is expected to
begin in October to install a turf infield for the baseball diamond and a multi-sport turf surface for the large field that will accommodate two Little League or softball diamonds and a full-sized field for soccer and lacrosse.
The project received a combination of private do-nations and grants from the state’s Recreation & Conser-vation Funding Board and the county’s Community Partnership and Grants (CPG) program.
“The leadership we received from Sen. Hill, Council Member Kathy Lambert, King County Parks & Recreation and the state Recreation &
Conservation Office helped us reach our fundraising goals,” Klein said. “They have been instrumental in our success.”
Redmond North Little League’s “Renovate the Ridge” campaign will con-tinue to raise funds for park amenities. Field renovation is expected to be complete by spring 2014.
“If you’re a Redmond North Little League family, you think you might be one some day, or you’re a supporter of youth athletics and our community parks, we hope you’ll join us at our ‘Heading for Home’ celebra-tion,” Klein said. “It’s been a team effort all the way.”

It’s not surprising that a large crowd turned out on a recent Tuesday night in Bellevue at a transportation forum by state Senate leaders. It’s also not surprising that they aren’t happy that the Legislature didn’t pass a transportation bill in the last session.
Like all things in politics, there’s lots of blame to go around for that legislative lack.
Yes, the House did pass a transportation bill last session. � at doesn’t mean it was perfect or solved all the pressing problems.
And, yes, the Senate coalition didn’t pass a version of its own, so no compromise could be worked out.
Adding to the problem was that too many legislators were holding back their vote on a transportation bill in an attempt to pry some-thing else out of the session. When the session ended, many people were le� wanting — in-cluding residents throughout the state.
It’s easy to pick at any piece of legislation. Nothing is ever perfect. But the reality in this state is that more money needs to be spent on transportation and that money is going to have
to come from more taxes.Forget the mantra of “let’s be more e� cient.”
Paving a road is pretty e� cient as it is.Senate lawmakers will hold eight more
transportation forums around the state. We bet they’ll hear cries for transportation � xes at every stop. � e state has problems — and needs
— everywhere.� ere’s talk of a special session this fall to deal
with transportation. It should seriously be con-sidered. All legislators need to do is listen and they’ll understand the problems clearly enough.

satisfaction regarding the city’s recreational services is mixed and developing the master plan will help them in serving the community’s needs and improve e� ciency. � e master plan will also help city sta� prepare for Red-mond’s anticipated growth.
“We’re recognizing that there will be an increase in population, especially in downtown Redmond and Overlake in the near future,” Anderson said.
SWIMMING ON BORROWED TIME
� e highest need in the city is a new aquatics center and Anderson said they are focusing on downtown sites for a possible new location.
Langsley, who is an “on-and-o� -again” regular swimmer, said the current Redmond Pool is inacces-sible for family swim time and is very crowded. One of the things she liked about the community center in Oregon as well as the Paul Derda Recreation Center in Broom� eld, Colo. — which she has also visited — is all the di� erent rooms available for various uses.
“� ey’re just really, re-ally pleasant places to go to,” Langsley said.
Mark Hickok, recreation division manager for the City of Redmond, acknowl-edged that Redmond Pool is outdated. He said it was built in 1970 and while they were able to update a lot of things on the surface such as cleaning the pool and retiling when the city took ownership in 2010, the pool still needs a lot of work behind the scenes such as the building’s pipes.
“We’re on borrowed time,” he said about the pool’s lifespan of 40 years. “We’re maintaining it the best we can.”
Hickok added that the pool’s current location is very tight on parking and things get particularly di� cult when there is a swim meet.
Although the city is the
property owner, WAVE Aquatics operates the pool and Hickok said the orga-nization has been included in the talks and meetings regarding the master plan.
MORE SPACE, MORE DIFFERENT SPACE
Of all the city’s recreation buildings, the Old Redmond Schoolhouse Community Center is the oldest, having been built in 1922. It became a community center in Janu-ary 2000.
Hickok said because it used to be a school — as the name indicates — the build-ing does not accommodate all of the city’s needs. For ex-ample, holding � tness classes in a school classroom doesn’t always work. It is also di� cult to hold “wet classes” such as paint classes for kids in a room with carpet because it’s di� cult to clean.
“We make the best of it,” Hickok said.
Another issue the city cur-rently has is a de� ciency of gyms. Hickok said they only have the one gym at the com-munity center, which the city has been leasing from Lake Washington School District since 1997. � is partnership with the district extends beyond this as the city utilizes many of the school gyms throughout Redmond.
“We use a lot of gyms in the schools...but (the schools) need them for things, too,” Hickok said.
In community surveys, Anderson and Hickok said people have told them they would like to see things such as an indoor running/walk-ing track, more gyms, ad-ditional multi-purpose spaces and � tness spaces. Anderson said people have also said they want to see a theater for performing arts.
At the moment, the city is looking at various options that range from investing in and expanding its current recreation buildings to mov-ing locations and building new buildings.
A PLACE TO CALL THEIR OWN
� e OFH was built in 1952
and previously served as the Redmond � re station and city hall.
Anderson said the building became a teen center in 1992 in response to feedback the city received from teens at a youth summit.
“Teens wanted a place to share their music and talent,” she said.
Ken Wong, teen and 50+ program administrator for the city, said the teen center is outdated and structurally may not meet their needs in the future. Teens have been involved in the stakehold-ers’ meeting and Wong said they want a teen center that is located downtown or in a central area where teens can easily access it.
“What the teen center needs and what we have seen trending for teens,” he said, “is a space that they can call their own, a place where they can share their talent — performance space — and structured programs that they can be involved in or learn from.”
Wong said how this will look in the short term and long term will be determined by what the community shares as its interests.
“Teens need a space that they can own and make their own and be able to be learn and share,” he said. “� e Old Fire House Teen Center has been that place and as we look to the future and evalu-ating the condition of the
site, we need to make some changes and (now) we have time to do that.”
Like the community’s teens, Anderson said the se-niors in the community also want a place speci� cally for them and to have ownership of their center.
In coming up with the � ve options that will be presented next week, Anderson said they held focus groups with users of all the buildings, including the RSC’s Senior Advisory Committee, which
acts in an advisory capacity to sta� in assessing participants’ needs and planning RSC activities.
� e current RSC was built in 1990 and program coordi-nator Karen Phillips said they want the community to have the opportunity to bring their ideas forward at next week’s meeting before commenting.

When Irene Plenefisch made the transition from working at SonoSite, Inc. to Microsoft Corp. in Redmond three years ago, she wasn’t sure if she was making the right choice moving from one industry to another.
She had spent 15 years in the medical devices field and that knowledge base was not transferable to the world of technology. But the skill set she had gained from work-ing with the government at her previous company was transferable and she quickly found that she didn’t miss her old job.
“It’s been great,” she said about her job as government affairs director for Microsoft. “I’ve never really looked back.”
Plenefisch works with local governments on issues important to the company and its continued growth as well as issues impor-tant to the state, including transportation, business climate, economic develop-ment and quality of life. In her position, she said she works specifically with local governments, including the cities of Redmond, Seattle and Bellevue as well as King County and a few counties in central Washington. She said there are other people within Microsoft who work with the higher levels of government.
In addition to her work with Microsoft, Plenefisch is in her second year as co-chair of the Seattle Cham-ber’s Policy Council — which works with the local business communities to speak with
one voice in a “cohesive fashion” to lawmakers on what they can do to provide a healthy business climate.
Plenefisch — a Kirkland resident — is originally from Ann Arbor, Mich. She received a bachelor of arts degree from St. John’s College in Maryland and a master of business administration from the University of Michigan. She and her husband moved to the northwest in 1992.
While in school, she studied marketing and eco-nomics, which didn’t exactly prepare her for the work she does now.
“I have an unconventional background for a person in government affairs,” she said.
Plenefisch’s career path be-gan at SonoSite, a diagnostic ultrasound manufacturer, with a technology angle related to reimbursement but grew into an advocacy role
regarding policy affecting reimbursement. When this happened, she questioned branching out and whether she should stick to some-thing she knew. But her decision to step out of her comfort zone has been very rewarding.
“Government,” she said, “I think, is fun.”
In specifically working with local governments at Microsoft (she worked on the federal level at Son-oSite), Plenefisch said she has enjoyed getting to know the mayors, city council members and other staff and
officials as she works more closely with them and gains a better understanding of their needs.
“It’s more personal,” she said, comparing it to working at the federal level. “It’s more collaborative.”
Although Plenefisch enjoys her job, it does come with some challenges — the biggest of which is balancing a career with parenthood. The mother of three said while it may sometimes be more difficult for women because of the historical roles they have held in the past, being a working parent can
be challenging regardless of gender.
When her children — who range from 11 to 17 in age — were younger, Plenefisch spent a few years working part time. She said during that time, she didn’t feel as if she was giving her all to either part of her life, but in the end was glad she contin-ued working. Plenefisch said she and her husband have covered for each other over the years.
“We’ve shared the respon-sibility of taking care of the family both economically and physically,” she said.
Plenefisch steps out of comfort zone, gains rewarding career
Andrea Lachmann began her career in com-mercial real estate about 10 and a half years ago, working as an administrative assistant for a real estate investment trust based in Southern California.
Since then, she has worked her way up the career ladder — and the West Coast — to become a senior real estate manager for asset services at CBRE Inc. in Redmond.
“As opportunities arose, I made sure I seized the opportunity to take on new responsibili-ties,” Lachmann said.
The 36-year-old moved to Redmond six years ago and has been at her current company for eight months.
In her position, she oversees the leasing and management of commer-cial buildings in Redmond and the Eastside for a CBRE client. Through the leasing side of her job, Lachmann leases space to companies ranging from startups to large corpo-rations who may be looking to add satellite operations. On the property management side, she said she works with a variety of vendors and contracts to ensure the buildings are well maintained, safe and “exude a professional appearance.”
It’s a lot of work and Lachmann said it is
definitely a team effort.“This volume of work is not done alone,” she
said. “Assignments are accomplished with the help of my CBRE co-workers in the Redmond office.”
Lachmann received a bachelor of arts degree in environment and resource studies with a focus in public policy from Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario, Canada. She also holds a real property administrator accredita-tion from the Building Owners and Managers Institute and is a licensed broker in Washing-ton state.
For Lachmann, one of the biggest challenges she has faced has been juggling the demands of her career with her family and civic duties. The mother of two — whose children are 8 and 3
— has been involved in the Redmond business community since she and her family moved to Washington. She said this involvement has contributed to the achievements and advance-ments in her career she has experienced, but it has not been easy, especially as commercial real estate — specifically property manage-ment and leasing — is more than a “9-to-5 job.
“Juggling all of those important pieces can often be tricky,” she said.
Lachmann said she has received a lot of sup-port from her family, her company and more, which has made the juggling easier. She added that CBRE also promotes a work-life balance.
“They do more than just promote it,” Lach-mann said. “They actually back it up and equip you to do so.”

Redmond-based mission-critical com-munications systems provider, Zetron, an-nounced that its third annual “Shoot for the Stars” golf tournament, held Sept. 4 at The Golf Club in Newcastle, was its most successful to date. More than 100 first responders and their guests attended the event and raised more than $16,000 for the Behind the Badge Foun-dation, an organization that serves Washington state’s injured and fallen law-enforcement of-ficers and their families. This brings the amount Zetron has raised for
Behind the Badge over the last three years to more than $41,000.
Tournament participants included law-enforcement and public-safety person-nel from agen-cies throughout Washington state and rep-resentatives from Zetron and other public-safety equipment vendors. This year’s event also featured the participa-tion of a host of local sports figures, including former Huskies and Se-ahawks, Michael Jackson and Nesby Glasgow; former Seahawks, Ran-dall Morris and Alonzo Mitz; world-renowned mountaineering guide, Garrett Madison; and Jet City Rollergirl, Kira Brown. David Rose, Q13 FOX news anchor and host of Washington’s Most Wanted, served as master of ceremonies for
the third year in a row.The money raised

The City of Redmond recently held a Forest Steward Apprecia-tion Picnic at Idylwood Beach Park in Redmond.
The event was organized by the Green Redmond Partnership to honor local volunteers for their environmental efforts on behalf of the city.
Marilynn Leland and Jim Downing were honored for a culmination of years of hard work and collaborative efforts put forth to ensure that Redmond’s park legacy and environmental health will continue to thrive for many seasons to come.
Downing, a steward at Grass Lawn Park, said his experience working as a volunteer has both nurtured valuable partnerships with other citywide organizations and created opportunities to grow and learn on a personal level.
“A while back, when the City of Redmond sponsored a program in my park with the Native Plant Society,” he said. “It was an intensive, immersive experience and the knowledge I gained from it helped me acquire a better understanding of what was in the forest — what should be there, what shouldn’t be there — as well
as planting applications. We’ve had so much support, and I couldn’t ask for a better volunteer organization.”
Redmond Mayor John Mar-chione, was also on hand at the evening’s festivities to honor the program pioneers and acknowl-edged that their influence tran-scends simple efforts at environ-
mental upkeep.“They are stewards of more
than our forests,” he said. “Their hard work ensures that we retain our commitment to our open spaces — our forests, trails, streams and creeks; allowing natural habitats to survive. The combined hours they’ve devoted, which includes all volunteers
participating in work parties led by all forest stewards — past and present — totals 5,914 hours. That’s remarkable.”
Leland, who serves as a co-steward for Viewpoint Park with fellow honoree Kaytlyn Sanders, said the experience creates an opportunity to not only preserve and ensure the vitality of the area’s natural environment, but also connect with other commu-nity members.
“There’s only so much funding, and if we don’t volunteer, things don’t get done,” Leland said. “I’ve made a commitment to this, but it just amazes me the number of people who will come out and give a few hours. Everyone has busy lives — and their own yard work. I think that’s pretty remark-able.”

Of the 168 acres enrolled over the years, 33 have been enrolled through volunteer work (the rest was by paid crews).
Three of the city’s current forest stewards (Leland, Sanders and Downing) have been devot-ing their time and talents to the program since its first orientation five years ago and the city’s reten-tion rates continue to hold strong.

A Kirkland mom and former Microsoft senior hu-man resources manager was charged in King County Supe-rior Court last week for first-degree custodial interference, a felony, after she illegally moved her 5-year-old son Maximus to Japan.
The state requested Chie Kawabata, 46, be held on a $100,000 bail due to the “seri-ous concern about the well-being and whereabouts of (the child) as well as the defendants’ unwillingness to follow court orders,” charging documents state.
After a 2012 divorce from her husband Kristoffer Mor-ness, the biological father of Maximus, Kawabata recently packed up her Kirkland home in the north Rose Hill neigh-
borhood, bought a one-way ticket to Japan and directly violated the parenting plan when she made the life-chang-ing decision to uproot her son, court documents state.
Kirkland police were dispatched to her home on July 31 for a welfare check after Morness, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, could not contact Kawabata through Skype after he missed his weekend visitation. Mor-ness had called the daycare where his son attends but the daycare provider hadn’t seen his son or Kawabata that week, documents state.
During the welfare check, an officer saw collapsed cardboard boxes and kitchen contents sit-ting on a table in a manner that was “consistent with a resident in the process of moving out.”
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed
Kawabata and her son boarded a Japan Airlines flight to San Francisco on July 26 to Haneda Airport in Japan. Japan Airlines confirmed their tickets were one-way tickets.
Two days later, Kawabata emailed Morness, admitting to being in Osaka, Japan after taking an extended leave from work through August.
“She said that ‘the torment I have endured in the recent years have left me (and there-fore [Maximus]) emotionally ruined and have forced my hands to take this step that I wish I did not have to take,’” the documents continue.
Morness filed a temporary parenting plan that granted him custody of Maximus and if the two return to the U.S., Kawabata is ordered to hand over her son within 72 hours.
Morness has not seen his son for more than one month.
Morness objected to Kawa-bata moving with Maximus to Japan in 2012 after Kawabata’s first attempt. Following a trial, the court granted Morness’s objection because “the det-rimental effects of relocation outweigh the benefits … court denies relocation in this case, considering the needs of the child, the lack of good faith, the unavailability of alternatives and all the factors the court has laid out.”
Kawabata has no criminal history other than driving violations.
Morness created the website www.chiekawabata.com explaining the story from his perspective.
“My goal is to have Chie Kawabata return to the Washington state jurisdic-tion with Maximus and face the courts,” his website says. “Maximus needs the protec-
tion of the courts and needs his father. Anyone seeking to hire or work with Ms. Kawabata should be forewarned.”
Morness alleges Kawabata has no regard for the rule of law and that she is “prepared to do anything to anyone, includ-ing her own child, in order to get her own way.”
Morness states on the website the family moved to the Seattle area after Kawabata got the Microsoft job but their marriage fell apart in Janu-ary 2011. He then moved to his native Vancouver, British Columbia and “endured two horrifying years of litigation initiated by Kawabata.”
Morness said in a phone interview on Sept. 20 that Kawabata accused him of child abuse; however, he said the courts and police were able to refute those claims.
“It’s just really frustrating
to do everything by the book and then get screwed like this,” Morness said.
He added that he doesn’t think Kawabata will abuse their son but because of her frequent job changes, he wor-ries Maximus will be affected by constant changes.
“Even before we separated, she was a workaholic, Max had daycare and nannies. She never actually spent time with him,” he said. “She provides for him, but I don’t think she’s a good parent.”
Morness said he’s done a lot of research on the Japa-nese legal system but doesn’t have faith much will be done, although he has received some good tips on her whereabouts.
“The fear is I won’t see him until he’s grown up,” Mor-ness said, adding he plans to build a website for his son that includes family photos and an explanation so that he can find answers when he’s older.
Morness has repeatedly tried to contact Kawabata without success.

Take a field trip to your own community animal shelter on Oct. 5 dur-ing Pawsitive Alliance’s
Second Annual Statewide Shelter Open House Event.
Pawsitive Alliance
is working with animal shelters across Washing-ton state for this event in order to promote and help them grow their adopter, donor and volun-teer bases — and to raise awareness of the good work that they do on a daily basis for animals in need.
Homeward Pet Adop-tion Center and other lo-cal shelters will be open-ing up their doors to host an open house and bring community members in as honored guests.

Feeling as though you are stuck in the middle between caring for your parents and your own children? Today’s Sand-wich Generation is feel-ing the squeeze between the needs of their teen or adult children who require help and their aging folks who require care. It can be difficult enough to pay your bills, reduce your debt and set the ball in motion for retirement, but even tougher when you must juggle assistance of your elderly parents and chil-dren.
Nearly half of all Americans age 55 and older report they expect to provide some form of support for aging parents, relatives and adult children, accord-ing to a recent Gallop Poll through SunAmerica Financial Group. Family assistance is a growing need in this country and one of those things most
retirement-aged people are beginning to plan for. A less than favorable economy has prompted an even heavier squeeze on the Sandwich Genera-tion, as seniors struggle to make ends meet, man-age their medical bills and watch their home value plummet. Adult children are losing their jobs, moving back home with their families in tow and struggling to keep their heads above water. The “squeeze” is becom-ing more gripping than ever before.
Finding Balance with Parents and children
There are ways for the Sandwich Generation to assist their parents and children without losing sight of the good rela-tionship that you must cultivate. With your parents, discuss openly long-term care insurance, take advantage of tax breaks and inquire with your employer about eldercare services and employee benefits. It may
surprise you to find out that some major employ-ers such as Microsoft offer service locators for the elderly and provide benefits to cover caregiv-ing support. When par-ents are in need of day-time care that you cannot provide unless you quit your job, investigate adult day care options, also available at North-shore Senior Center and/or some memory care communities. You don’t have to quit your job in order to care for your aging parents, but you do have to investigate the options available.
There are a number of ways to avoid the stress and strain of relation-ships, no matter how hard you are feeling sandwiched. Preventa-tive care is sometimes the best remedy available. Know where your local support groups are.
Always have a back up plan. What would hap-pen if you needed to be out of town for work or had an emergency hos-pitalization? Who would take care of your children and parents?
Considering respite/short term stays at assist-ed-living communities is an option. Most places in the Seattle area offer this. It is like reserving a hotel
room, but you will also be asked to allow a nurse to evaluate your parents and their primary care physician to provide the latest physical report. This also allows the rest of the family to enjoy
bonding time and family vacations without having to travel with an elderly in need of care. Respite/short term stays are usually for one week to 30 days and all inclusive costs range from $150 to
$200 a day.

Ways to make a difference this Breast Cancer Awareness MonthStatePoint
Unfortunately, too many of us know someone — a family member, friend or colleague — who is affected by breast cancer. In fact, breast cancer accounts for nearly one in three cancers diagnosed in U.S. women, according to the American Cancer Society.
Since there is no cure for breast cancer, much more needs to be done in the fight against this life-threat-ening disease.
There are several easy ways you can make a dif-ference this October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and beyond:
It was a tension-filled match, much like the games some teams will be playing during the state tournament two months from now.
The two-time defend-ing state 1B/2B cham-pion Bear Creek School girls soccer team knows all about those types of contests. On Monday, the Grizzlies summoned that experience with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Bush School on a Sara Hastings goal late in the second half.
“She’s a game saver,” senior Caroline Bridg-water said while smiling at sophomore Hastings after the match. Last year, Hastings also scored the winning goal in a crucial victory over Crosspoint Academy.
“I’d been taking a lot of shots, but none of them had been going in — so I just didn’t give up,” said Hastings, an attacking center midfielder. “It’s definitely exciting.”
Added Bridgwater, a holding center mid-fielder, about the Griz-zlies’ performance against Bush: “I think this game was one of those kind of games where it was all about heart and just put-ting your head down and finishing the game.”
Bear Creek got an early goal from senior Brit-tany DiGenova, but Bush pushed back and tied the match at 1-1 in the second half.
Bridgwater acknowl-edged that the Grizzlies made a few mistakes in the back and were a little shaky at times, but they banded together, stayed positive and pulled out the victory.
The Bush win raised Bear Creek’s record to 4-1-1 at the Reporter’s deadline for this issue. Last year, the Grizzlies racked up a 15-4 over-all record and defeated Napavine, 4-0, in the state final. Goalkeeper Maya Shipway, a sophomore this season, and her de-fense had two shutouts in the team’s final two games
last year, including a 4-0 victory over Crosspoint in the semifinals.
“Things are going really well,” said DiGenova, a
defending center mid-fielder. “We have the same team pretty much that we had last year, and we defi-nitely want to come back and win another state title. We’ve been work-ing hard and I think our record shows that.”
DiGenova said the Grizzlies do feel some
pressure as state title holders.
“I think for us, we thrive under pressure and that kind of motivates us to work harder,” she

DiGenova and Hastings all agree that Bear Creek soccer plays a special part in their lives. It’s not only a sports experience, but the girls are bonding on and o� the soc-cer pitch, as well.
“I think in practice, we really li� each other up, try to be encouraging and not put people down,” Leszynski said. “We build our morale and hope that we can pull out the wins because of our good attitude and helpful-ness to the others on the team.”
Along with DiGenova and Hastings, Leszynski has also scored this season along with Whitney Isbell, Hailey Mor-gan, Hannah Bauermeister and Abby Linnenkohl.
Bridgwater, who had 23 assists last season and four in Bear Creek’s recent 8-0 win over Mount Vernon Chris-tian, added: “I de� nitely feel this team comes out every single day and works as hard as they possibly can, and so I’m just really thankful to be able to play soccer with my best friends.”

Michael (Mike) Elwood DaviesMichael Elwood Davies, 77, passed away on Thursday
September 19, 2013.He was born to the late Willis and Mabel Davies on April 3,
1936 in Redmond, WA. Mike graduated from Lake Washington High School in 1954, served 8 years in the US Army Reserves and married Cheryl L Davies on December 4, 1959. They lived together while raising their three children in Kirkland, WA.
Mike had his own commercial construction company for over ten years and then worked as a Project Superintendent for Baugh Construction until his retirement in July, 1995. Mike was a master of his profession and took great pride in his accomplishments.
Mike and Cheryl retired to Goodyear, AZ in 1995 where they became very involved in the Pebble Creek Community. Mike enjoyed gardening, woodworking, golfing, cooking, and building sets for the Pebble Creek Theatre. He loved to vacation by cruise with his wife. He was a sports enthusiast enjoying football, baseball and hockey.
Mike is preceded in death by his two daughters, Cynthia and Lisa Davies. He is survived by his wife of 53-years and three children, Mark Davies of Littleton CO; M. Shawn and Toni Davies of Peoria, AZ; and Rodney and Diane Davies Poepping of Eagle River, AK. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Tana Davies, Taylor Davies, Taryn Davies, Michael Poepping, Lucy Poepping, Alexis Davies and Delaney Davies.
There will be no public service, Mike’s favorite charity was Children’s Hospital.
