Piecing the Puzzle - Creating Quality

The challenges: Competition for

places More students than

places in many areas Quality placements Quality supervisors Supporting external

students

Dr. Yvonne Masters and Dr. Stephen Winn, NAFEA Conference, Nov. 2010

We need to tease out solutions to create quality professional experiences by working in new ways!

Reflecting on Placements

Because external students do not have an opportunity to

come back and debrief after placement, we have put in

place a reflective forum and we use de Bono’s (1985) six

thinking hats to encourage reflection from differentviewpoints

Yvonne (Tamsyn) and Sue (Jass): Work in Second Life

Trialling a virtual world

• Professional persona• Classroom,

playground, staffroom built

• Tutorials/workshops held with both on- and off-campus students

• Positive feedback -Dr. Yvonne Masters and Dr. Stephen Winn, NAFEA Conference, Nov. 2010

“I think it is a wonderful tool for allowing more hands on and collaborative ‘real time’ work with other students in the group.

“The Cultural Mind Set”

YES WE CANBut we may not and

there is no guarantee that we will do.

YES WE WILLBut it may be delayed,

scaled back or only marginally

operationalised

YES WE DOWe know the imperative

of not doing and have operationalised the

concept in scope, sequence and scale

The Present and Future for Experienced Practitioners in VSEEP

2010• Increase in number of Eps

taking part• Debriefing with university

academic staff• Use of Bluetooth wireless

connectivity• Portability of connection• Areas of the curriculum• Linking to the virtual

audience

2011• From PoC to SoP• Increase in Eps across the

state• Linking via desktop

videoconferencing• Regular interaction in pre-

service programs• Flexible and portable

connectivity• Improved QoS

Using technology to enhance professional experience -

conclusions• Different contexts require different

approaches• Several approaches can occur

throughout a course• The challenges will always be there• Technology is a tool not a panacea

We need to work together to keep finding new pieces to complete the puzzle
