School Magazine

Music Magazine

For my preliminary task I learnt the basics of how to use items such as Photoshop and the different tools in which you use in Photoshop to produce a good standard of a magazine. I have progressed from my Preliminary task as I have made my title much bigger as it will attract the readers and it suites the music magazine conventions. I have made the articles smaller to my final task as I did not want it to interfere with my picture. I have made my articles more bold to a standard as I think that it stands out more but kept it low profile. I also kept my colours to a neutral to suite my target audience. I kept the style similar as they both look professional and work together.

Evaluation: Understanding of the development process (Contents)

As you can see from my transformation from my school magazine to Music Magazine. To get the quality of my Music Magazine then I took on board my criticisms from my school magazine and produced this Music Magazine which is in my opinion a good standard Music Magazine. When I have asked my peers they think it has improved massively and all the colours work together to a good standard and it also suites my target audience. I also took ideas from my Research and Planning tasks as I looked at professional Music Magazine producers and took on board for conventions and colour schemes as I think this is the most important process of the magazine as if the colours don’t work together then it puts the magazine down.

Evaluation: Understanding of the development process

Music MagazineFor my preliminary task I did not produce a Double Page Spread as I my task was only to focus on a Cover and Contents page. But to produce the standard of my Music Magazine then I had to find three magazines that are a good standard and take good and bad ideas from each. As you can see from my Magazine is that the title is big and bold which is aligned to the left corner which would attract the readers. The subtitle is also big which means the reader knows what is on the page but it does not take the attention off the title itself. I did my layout like this as it is similar to my researched magazine as the most important article is at the front and least on the next page.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of

real media products?

Page 7: Reece Bahia

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Cover)

The Music Magazine that I have produced suites many conventions and forms which is in comparison to a professional standard Magazine. In most Music Magazines they place there Title to the left as it does not look boring and so that the date/issue number can be placed in the top right. When they place the main image on the front cover they always aligned in the centre as it is the centre of attraction, this is similar in the Mute Magazine and it is situated in the right place. When the professional producers of a music magazine they place there articles around the picture and not place them on the picture as it takes away the limelight from the centre/main picture, I used this as I was trying to produce a magazine that looked professional conventions and wanted to match those.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Contents)

The contents of my Music Magazine that I have produced suites many conventions and forms which is in comparison to a professional standard Magazine. On most Contents pages in Music Magazines they place there title at the top of the page to let the reader know what page they are on, my page is similar to that convention as the title is at the top and uses this convention, this therefore makes the page look better and if it is similar then more people will like reading it as it is the same as a professional page. Another convention that I have followed is the articles are in a list of page order, the real media products use this so that the audience/reader do not get confused and it gives the contents more of a flow and I liked this idea and used this. Adding a picture to the page is another convention that professional magazine producers use so that the readers will be attracted to the magazine, I also liked this idea and put this in my magazine which looks professional to a standard.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products? (Double Page)

The Double Page Spread of my Music Magazine that I have produced does not suite many conventions and forms which is in comparison to a professional standard Magazine. On most Double Page Spread in Music Magazines they place a Picture on one side then a interview/biography on the other side. I did not like this for a layout so I changed my layout so it did not suite the conventions of a real media product as I did not like this. In most Double Page Spreads they often do a interview/biography and I liked this so I used this in my magazine so it was similar to a professional magazine.

How does your media product

represent particular social

groups?

Page 11: Reece Bahia

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

• My media product represents teenagers and young/middle aged adults as my band and magazine is aimed to those ages as they are most likely to look at Music Magazines rather than 50 year olds. The title of my magazine is Mute, this could be aimed towards all genre’s of music but it is mainly aimed at the pop genre as the band themselves look like music stars from a pop genre, also it can be seen from the clothing in the photographs taken and the speech in the interview on the Double Page Spread as I wanted my band to be like S Club 7 so they could have mixed gender fans. Also the colours used through the whole magazine are all neutral as it is aimed at females and males.

What kind of media institution might distribute

your media product and why?• The media institution Bauer Media would be a good

institution to publish my Music Magazine as it already publishes the Heat Magazine and Q Magazine which everybody is familiar with. This would suite my music magazine as Bauer Media publish magazines that are produced for the pop genre but they also publish magazines like Kerrang that would appeal to wider audiences.

Page 13: Reece Bahia

Who would be the audience for your media product?

• I believe that my audience is teenagers and young/middle aged adults as I believe that a young mixed band would appeal to this age range as it would not appeal to an age range of 45-65. The type of music that my band would produce, it would appeal to teenagers and young/middle aged adults as they are coming up with inspirational and emotional music that would attract those ages, they are also producing up-to-date versions of the 60s music to boost themselves up the charts, this could make there fan base extra more by bringing more people that are aged higher than the target audience.

Page 14: Reece Bahia

How did you attract/address your audience?

• I attracted my audience by using many different methods to appeal to the audience, to attract my audience I used neutral colours as it would appeal to males and females in the audience and it is not focused on any gender as it is a mixed group. The title of my magazine is MUTE this could be emphasised in many ways but it is not focused on any gender or genre, it is based on everything within the music industry. Also the way in which I layout my interview of my band would appeal to my audience as the reader can see the personalities of each band member from start to finish and this would appeal to the audience as they could be touched emotionally by what the band member says. Also the biography/mini fact file could attract the audience as the reader could have something in common with the any of the band members and would start to like the band.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of

constructing this product?• In the process of making my Music Magazine then there

were several different programmes/software’s that I have had to use. One of those programmes was Adobe Photoshop, I used this to produce my magazine, I previously used this for my ICT GCSE to edit images and adding effects. But as I was using this more and more, I then got use to using it and gained more confidence with the tools. I also used this to edit my images to remove spots, red areas on the face and change a band members hair to improve the look and make it more professional. For my preliminary task I used Macromedia Fireworks to produce my magazine, I also used this in my ICT GCSE and I already become familiar with this.

Page 16: Reece Bahia

What do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

• I feel that I have progressed massively from start to finish as I have now learnt many techniques in constructing a Music Magazine. I learnt the conventions used to produce a good standard magazine and if I produce a magazine in the future I will know from this construction what to include and lay it out in a suitable way. I also learnt all the tools on Photoshop that I did not know before as I did not use these as it was a different project. Another technique I have learnt during this process is all the different shot types and angles used to take any photographs and I can now use this knowledge and when I take photographs I will use all the different shot types and angles. I bettered my skills of colour schemes for my magazine as I produced a file of all the colours that worked well and I now know what colours work well and not so well and this will be used in future projects that I will take part in.
