COMPANY PROFILEThe client SCCT in Port Said is a state-of-the-art container terminal loca-ted at the northern end of the Suez Canal. The majority shareholder of the terminal is APM Terminals, one of the largest container terminal operators in the world. SCCT has been serving global shipping lines since beginning operations in 2004 and is today the largest container terminal in Egypt and one of the largest facilities in the Mediterranean. An ambitious expansion program is currently underway, which by 2011 will see the terminal‘s capacity double.

INITIAL SITUATIONZPMC STS Crane (1.650 tons) in Port Said was hit by a vessel, pushed out of the rails and travelling system and the steel structure of the crane was damaged.
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONSECURE & MOVE> Securing of crane against collapse
> Rotate crane 15°
> Moving with FLUIDTS Air Gliding Systems: sideslipping approx. 30 m towards end of the pier, backslipping approx. 220 m, approx. 45 m to parking and repair position at the inner yard
REPAIR> Disassembly of the damaged long travel system> Securing of the crane with Konecranes‘ Lifting Towers in order to repair
the damaged box sections. > Installation of the newly delivered long travel system
MOVE & RECOMMISSIONING> Moving with FLUIDTS Air Gliding Systems: sideslipping of 45 m and fore-
slipping of 220 m back to the crane rails
> Recommissioning and function tests by a third party
CHALLENGE> Execution within 5 months from initial inspection to delivery
> Moving the crane on shifting ground (quicksand) which could not be laden with more than 3 tons and 6 tons respectively per square meter
> Replacement of supporting elements of the structural steelwork without any losses in terms of stability, reliability, safety
