unexpected and sudden fall of the palm-fruit on a craw's . . '

(lee Apte's Dictionary under the word 'nyaya'.) Many

people, however, take this 'nyaya' as referring to two

accidental occurrences mis-interpreted as ca.usaly related . (po&t hoc ergo propter hocJ. This has its origin from a

fanny.incident of a craw coming to sit on a palm-tree ana

falling of a palm-fruit £ram the tree instantaneously.

The former is by no means the cause g.£ the latter though .,r-- .

it may appear to be so. However, in our text, the expre­

ssion 'ldikataliyam.' has not been used as referring to such

incident.

compound noun 'Imk'd.tala.' means 'the coming of the crov1

ana the falling of the palm-fruit' is accidental like

each other. The suffix 'cha' is now added in a further .~

sense of similarity. The whole expression would thus

mean something which is accidental just like the coming

of the crow and the falling of the palm-fruit on its head

so as to kill it, are accidental.

first 'nay ana~ is elided. The whole compound word would

signifying a quality is reauplicatea when the idea of

similarity i.s denoted. The rule comes under the 'adhik:ara'

such a redup~ication is treated like a"tt.armadharaya com­

pound, ~.e., they are compounded in the pattern of a

Karmadharaya. Thus 'bhitabhita' would mean 'like sameone

afraid'.
