ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Mark Perlman was born in New York City, and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. He received Bachelor of Arts degrees in Philosophy and Anthropology from Ohio State University in 1987, and a Master's degree in Philosophy from there in 1989. He also studied for a year at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich, Germany. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Arizona in 1994. He taught for five years at Arizona State University before moving to become Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Western Oregon University in 1998. His philosophical specialties are Philosophy of Mind, Philosophy of Psychology, Metaphysics, Philosophy of Law, and Aesthetics (particularly of music). He has a number of philosophical publications, and has presented lectures on a diverse range of topics, including utopia and dystopia, musical ontology, psychological egoism, analytic philosophy, punishment, the meaning of life, and, of course, mental representation and misrepresentation.

Perlman is also active in music, as both a string bass player and conductor. He has played bass with orchestras throughout the United States, and also in Munieh, Germany. He has conducted a number of orchestras, was Associate Conductor of the Scottsdale Symphony Orchestra, and is Music Director of the Arizona Camerata Chamber Orchestra. He is an expert on historical orchestral recordings.

He is also a cat-lover (which is apparent from some of the examples in this book).
