FIRST QUARTERLawrence County Educational Service Center Ohio $1,500See the World and Find My PathThis grant helped prepare middle school students for choosing a college and/or career path by exposing them to college and career experiences including college and office visits. Additionally, students participated in financial literacy and entrepreneurship courses. Math teachers and volunteers from local banking institutions taught the students basic financial literacy skills, and the students were asked to develop a product and manage a business to demonstrate mastery of these skills.

Wayne County Board of Education West Virginia $5,000Supporting Literacy in Wayne CountyThrough 4-H and the WVU Extension Service, Wayne County schools offer Energy Express, an AmeriCorps program designed to curb loss in reading achievement over the summer months, at three elementary schools in Wayne County. In order to expand the program to Buffalo Elementary, the grantee was required to raise 30% of the overall cost of the program. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

Ashland Independent School District Kentucky $2,281GoNoodle - AshlandKentucky “strongly recommends” students get 150 minutes of physical activity per week. Through a grant, Ashland Independent Schools were able to employ a physical education teacher at each elementary school to provide this for students. This grant ended at the end of the 2017-2018 school year, diminishing the amount of physical activity the students received each week. In an attempt to supplement this, Ashland Schools proposed purchasing software (“GoNoodle Plus”) that would help classroom teachers incorporate elements of physical activity into their lessons. Classroom teachers were required to use the program at least 10 minutes per day.

America’s Best Communities Fund West Virginia $3,712.50America’s Best Communities CompetitionAs Huntington competed against seven other communities vying for the title of America’s Best Community, this grant assisted the ABC team with the purchase of design and printing services for the final version of the city’s revitalization plan to be submitted for judging. Huntington won the $3 million grand prize. The winnings will be used to implement the economic revitalization plan, known as the HIP (Huntington Innovation Project) Plan, which focuses on Huntington’s three most distressed neighborhoods. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

Coalfield Development Corporation West Virginia $3,712.50West Edge Factory Accessibility ImprovementsThis grant assisted with the construction of a wheelchair ramp and signage for the West Edge Factory, in efforts to help make the facility ADA compliant. Coalfield acquired the vacant factory to accelerate job creation and serve as a workforce training center for a variety of job sectors. In addition to these workforce development contributions, increased use of the building itself has already reduced neighborhood crime rates and increased local property values. ADA compliance would make the building an even greater asset to the region. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

SECOND QUARTER Heritage Farm Museum & Village West Virginia $3,500Heritage Farm PavilionHeritage Farm had been hosting music, dance and educational events in a building with a dirt floor. The Farm was upgrading the dirt floor to a concrete one, and seeking funding for a portable dance floor that could be placed on top of the concrete floor to safely accommodate dance groups and other special events. The project resulted in a more versatile space in which food could be served and museum artifacts displayed. This grant was contingent upon raising sufficient funds to complete the project.

Appalachian Foothills Housing Agency, Inc. Kentucky $2,243.48Family Self-Sufficiency Computer Lab and Outreach ProjectThe AFHA administers the HUD Housing Choice Voucher Program which assists very low-income families with their housing costs at a private rental unit. These same families needed access to computers to help with furthering their education and searching for employment. This project provided a computer lab for the families to use to compose letters, applications and resumes.

Citizens Conservation Corps West Virginia $1,462.50Greater Huntington Parks WV Arrow to theSummit Community Service InitiativeAs the Boy Scouts National Jamboree occurred in Beckley over the summer, Boy Scouts from around the country traveled through West Virginia. In order to offer the scouts a mechanism to give back to West Virginia while they were here, the Citizens Conservation Corps helped to arrange service projects in each county in West Virginia. The Wayne County project was the construction of a 1,325-foot trail behind the lodge at Camp Mad Anthony Wayne. The Foundation’s grant provided partial support for necessary equipment for completion of the project. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.

THIRD QUARTER Safe Harbor of Northeast KY Kentucky $2,508Emergency Shelter Kitchen EnhancementsSafe Harbor is one of Kentucky’s largest domestic violence shelters and outreach facilities. Due to the layout of the campus, families and children had to walk up a steep hill to a completely different building when they needed ice. This grant provided an ice machine specifically for the emergency shelter, alleviating the need for residents to travel to another building.

Lawrence Co. Board of Developmental Disabilities Ohio $3,777PLAY Project Expansion to Lawrence CountyThe PLAY (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) Project is a new, evidence-based, early intervention model designed for children ages birth to six years old who are diagnosed with an Autism Spectrum Disorder. It is recommended that these patients receive 20-30 hours of therapy a week. This amount of therapy is only possible if parents are trained to deliver therapies between visits from a staff therapist. This grant provided Lawrence County Board of Developmental Disabilities therapists with the training and certification needed to train parents to provide in-home PLAY therapies.

St. Mary’s Medical Center Foundation Ohio $4,020GoNoodle Plus Partnership with St. Mary’s inLawrence County, OHGoNoodle is an online collection of movement videos and games aimed at getting kids moving at school and at home. Teachers can use the resource to integrate physical activity into all subject matters in their lesson plan, increasing the likelihood that information will be retained as well as encouraging habits of physical fitness. This grant helped sponsor GoNoodle Plus for Lawrence County, OH elementary schools.

Marshall University Department of Social Work/Research West Virginia $4,020Structural Family Therapy Training for EnhancedTreatment of Substance Abuse DisordersThe Marshall University Department of Social Work and Department of Psychology train a large number of behavioral health professionals who serve Huntington and the surrounding Tri-State region. Research has shown that therapies targeted at addressing deeply rooted family issues are more likely to be successful in ending substance abuse addictions. This grant helped to fund the two-day Structural Family Therapy Training on Marshall’s campus. FOURTH QUARTER

Clio Foundation West Virginia $3,500Tri-State Digital Heritage TrailsEach day Clio connects thousands to nearby history with a free website and mobile application that allow the public to simply walk or drive through a community and learn about buildings, monuments, markers and landmarks as if they were walking through a museum with a team of scholars, historians and librarians. This grant was used to support costs associated with gathering information to be entered into the database to make Clio usable in the Huntington area.

Goodwill Industries of KYOWVA West Virginia $1,929Goodwill of KYOWVA’s Recycling Sustainability ProjectGoodwill of KYOWVA recycles the metals contained within donated electric cords. Presently, the cords are bundled and sold at a significantly reduced rate compared to what could be gained from selling processed, clean metals. Funds from this grant purchased an industrial wire stripper, providing a safe method for employees to remove plastic coverings of donated electric cords, so that more money can be made from processed clean metals. Funded, in part, by the West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program Endowment Fund.
